GoldenEye Designer Backs Virtual Console Release

Bond + Virtual Console = a match made in heaven or a legal nightmare?

Martin Hollis would love to see 007 on the Wii...but also admits it's a legal minefield

The man behind GoldenEye - one of the most beloved N64 games of all time - has admitted that he'd love to see the game make it to the Virtual Console download service.

Martin Hollis, formerly of Rare and now plying his trade at his own company Zoonami (Bonsai Barber), was one of the leading figures in the development of the highly-regarded N64 FPS. He left Rare after completing work on another N64 classic, Perfect Dark.

Speaking to the UK's Official Nintendo Magazine about the chances of Agent Bond hitting the VC, Hollis had this to say:

There's always someone with some exclusivity agreement, so there's lots of lawyers... I'm not going to hold my breath. I'd love it to happen, but I can't see it.

There's been much talk of GoldenEye hitting Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade service, and even rumours that Rare have produced an upgraded version for the service. Legal issues seem to have stopped this move also, but Perfect Dark is also expected to make its XBLA debut soon.

All of this legal stuff is making our heads hurt.

I never was crazy about FPS games. I've gotten a little more used to them now but when I was a kid I hated them. You can't even see where your walking and you're just a floating gun. The Metroid Prime games are probably the only games in that style that I ever really liked. That's Metroid though and it's a lot different from the average FPS.

OMG over-rated! I'm of a mind to report that post lol :p

How has this game aged though? I imagine its dated pretty badly.

Of course GoldenEye will have aged...but the fact is, it was never the graphics that really 'sold' the game. It was the way in which the gameplay was structured that made it really stand out. I played it again recently and although it looks pretty rough by today's standards, the gameplay has more scope than the likes of Killzone 2 or Halo 3.

Goldeneye was the first N64 game I had and I loved every second. Perfect Dark was superior technically but in terms of what made the game special I'd say Goldeneye has a very slight edge in single player but Perfect Dark wipes the floor with Goldeneye in terms of multiplayer.

I used to love playing chasm (I think that's what it was called) in Perfect Dark, where there was a set of platforms connecting two areas over a giant pit. I used to love dropping down onto the pipes and taking out people from below.

Both great games and it's such a shame that neither of them are likely to ever grace the VC.

idk what the chances are for it, probably much more than GoldenEye.
actually, what they need to do is make a new Donkey Kong game for wii that is similar to DK64, no DonkeyKonga BS.

I still play Goldeneye every now and then on my N64. It's actually aged quite nicely and I still consider it the best First Person Shooter ever. Every FPS I've played since has had to live up to Goldeneye's standards, Perfect Dark being the only one that comes close, IMO. There are some great FPS's that have been released since then, and if it wasn't for Goldeneye, I wonder if a lot of them would have happened. But even Halo, Metroid Prime and Resistance: Fall of Man got nothing on James Bond.

Sucks that it can't hit the Wii as it should as it's a N64 game, but the game itself can be easily had for nearly nothing since it was so widely produced if you have the n64. Then again 60seconds in google land will get the rom and project64 which runs it fine too.

Goldeneye had incredible replay value, even without multiplayer. I must have played the Facility stage a hundred times with different variations of weapons after earning the cheats. Ridiculously fun! Multiplayer in those games was always a bit meh for me. I mean... I had a PC. Perfect Dark was a huge disappointment with the crap frame rate and boring stages (at least before I gave up on it.) Seems the attraction to that one was the multiplayer, though, so I get why people love it. :)

One of my favorite parts in Goldeneye was the reaction animations when you shot the enemy were classic and took SO long for anyone to mimic. (Also watching the movie again and recognizing the stages! They used blueprints from the actual sets to make the stages, so at times it's identical.)

I remember it was eerie how realistic the faces looked... hmm... that was a loooong time ago.

Jet Force Gemini was a great, great game that suffered from some bloat especially in the later levels. Rare started inflating their games with empty mindless space around that time that ruined them for me. Wasn't as bad in Jet Force Gemini as it was in Donkey Kong 64 and Banjo Tooie.

There are two minefields that Nintendo have to cross if we are to see it on the Virtual Console:

1. The company that produce the game is Rare, which is owned by Microsoft.

2. It's a license game, so for some unknown reason, we can't have good license games, only the ***** TMNT game for the NES.

However, this game does stand a slim chance on the Virtual Console. Remember Activision? They added Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure for the Sega Genesis on the Wii and they hold the James Bond licensing games now. So what I'm saying is that Nintendo needs to do a interview with Activision by asking them to put the game on the Virtual Console. That way, if we have just one N64 Rare game, it'll be this. In fact, this may start ending licensing issues on the Virtual Console. It's a good idea and I hope this works out.

imo Perfect dark had better multiplayer, but Goldeneye had better storyline and missions were more fun... imo
would be awesome to happen, esspecially if both PD and GE would be on VC :D
i'd buy them both
i dont say it will come, but there's always a chance, in this case an extremely slim chance, but we'll see what they want :)
if they wont come, then we have other games to do :)

This was a game I at first hated back in the day. I was never a pc gamer and the thought of a fps on a home console just seemed lame to me. However, once a bunch of us got together on a weekend to try it out, we were all hooked. This game really opened up the 64 to multiplayer gaming and improved the fps in my opinion. It was fun all around, despite problems of hanging around the shield and being able to look at the other screens to see where people were.

However, let's be realistic here, this game will likely never come out on VC as disappointing as that sounds. I have a 360 as well as wii and i'm not holding my breath to even see it appear on xbox live. It's like the scenario where a bunch of guys dig the same girl and want her affections, but she's oblivious to it all. all these guys are not going to agree on anything. Same problem here but even more problematic with money involved. It's amazing there's still talk of this concerning the virtual console. ah well....

...it's a great game, but you'd best whip out your n64 to play it.

I would love to see both Goldeneye and Perfect Dark be released on either consoles. I have both games on my old N64, but I find my N64 controllers are difficult to play with, especially because the stick >_> Treatment's been too rough I guess. So yeah, playing the games with a responsive controller would be great.

There's a lot of nostalgia in these games for many, so even if they have aged, I'm sure they'd sell like hell if they appeared. Besides, they're real quality games, so it'd be a nice addition.

Those two will be instant buy for 1200 Nintendo Points if they want!

I would be so upset if this came to Xbox and not the Wii. Especially as the Rare we knew and loved back then is now virtually a completely different company. But if they won't release Banjo-Kazooie on the Wii's VC, but have done so for XBox, then unfortunately it's a sign of things to come if this ever did get out of its legal loop. I was playing this a few months back on my N64, I still find it as playable and fun as it always was. I loved multiplayer with my friends after school, I was always Oddjob because he was harder to shoot!

Why wouldn't Martin Hollis want GoldenEye on the VC? It would represent virtually zero work on his part and (depending on prior agreements) more money. This seems like a "no brainer" to me.

58. Invertedzero United Kingdom 05 Jun 2009, 23:59 BST

BOOO! Why can't some of these developers/publishers just get over these silly legal arguments, and do an odd collaboration. Making these exclusive is hardly going to make anyone buy one console or another, just a section of unhappy gamers, and less overall profits for Rare. Can't they just take a leaf out of Sega and Nintendo's collaboration on games like FZero and Mario and Sonic, and other partys with Super smash Bros Brawl? A mutual agreement would see gamers happy, Rare making money off both consoles, and the games being in the place's they should be on both Nintendo's and Microsoft's console. I mean surely nintendo had some rights to the Banjo Kazooie games on the N64? I find the whole situation strange.

I realy wish rare would once again work with nintendo... after they began working with microsoft.... it just has not been the same, to be honest. Yes, Conkers live&reload, and Kameo was good games, but in the end.... I just miss the old spark from those old N64,Genesis, SNES and NES-games. I wish those clasics would come back and rare will give new games for nintendo (and realy, I NEVER liked PD:Z and Banjo Kazooie on the 350)
