Cave Story is quite the tale of success. Developed over five years by one man, named Daisuke Amaya, it first saw release over ten years ago on PC. Since then, it's received universal acclaim, achieved widespread popularity and has been ported to numerous platforms. Taking inspiration from old school exploration and action games like Metroid and Castlevania, the run 'n' gunner was praised for its compelling story and well-balanced gameplay. However, over a decade later there still hasn't been any evidence of a sequel, though this may have just changed recently.
Nicalis, the company that handled porting and publishing of the game to consoles, held a discussion at PAX South yesterday and may have inadvertently - or otherwise - spilled the beans. At the end of the panel - which was headed by the company founder, Tyrone Rodriguez - an eagle eyed fan noticed a desktop icon on the home screen of the Macbook they were using to present, titled "Cave Story 2". When the fan asked Rodriguez about it, he said that he "hadn't noticed that shortcut icon". When asked directly whether or not they were working on a sequel, he responded with, "maybe, maybe not."
Before speculation gets out of hand, remember that this is not Nicalis' game, though it was responsible for publishing and producing ports. It's certainly within the realm of reason that if Daisuke Amaya did create a sequel, he would partner with Nicalis once again to get it published for consoles. We're also hoping that a video of the presentation is posted online to reinforce the earnest claims of the source that witnessed this exchange.

This would be amazing! I love Cave Story to death and would do anything to have a sequel! I just hope this is true...
Cave Story was good but I can imagine after all these years that a sequel would be even better.
Interesting. I should probably play Cave Story again, soon.
I would pay so much money for this.
Watch, it'll be 5 more ports of the first game...
Coool. I'd love a sequel.
@Angelic_Lapras_King lol
I hope this isn't true. Cave Story is a very special game to me, and it getting a sequel would lessen its value, especially if it is a cash-in by Nicalis like the numerous Cave Story ports were.
Nevertheless, I would probably play a sequel 10+ times like I did with the first one.
@Angelic_Lapras_King
Ahahahaha this comment killed me Your more than likely right aswell.
@Cloud02 I'm certain our Toasters and Microwaves do not have a port yet, so yeah, I might be.
Despite me not 'beating' it yet (CURSE YOU, SANCTUARY!!), I'm open for a sequel
Really good game, I hope it gets a sequel.
Love Cave Story and it would really be a dream come true for it to happen.....but its not gonna happen I assure you!
OMG YESSSSSSSS I LOVE CAVE STORY!!!! this is really hype guys. This is really exiting!
Well, it is something Pixel has talked about on and off for years. I wouldn't be surprised if it happens eventually.
yus! hype. im at the orange castle in cave story +.
Cavestory is my favorite game of all time and a squeal has always crossed my mind as a possibility. I am on both sides whether I want it since I love Cavestory. At the same time though part of me does not want it since Cavestory was so special as a single game. I would get it though totally and try to actually go in with an open mind if this was ever true.
I had a blast playing this on the Wii. I would not mind a sequel, or a game that plays like it.
@ParSnake You like Cave Story, and have a Ghost Trick avatar. You're a cool guy.
As for Cave Story 2, I have no idea how good it would be. I mean, where can you take a story in a sequel? A prequel could actually be really cool. Hmm
Nicalis did a really slow and overall poor job handling Pixel's masterpiece. Plus Tyrone is such a Nintendo-hating, two-faced D-Bag. I dunno if this is good or bad news.
Seeing as how if it weren't for Cave Story, Nicalis wouldn't be where it is today, I'd hope that they'd give it highest priority and do a great job.
I'd hope Cave Story 2 would be a prequel for all those unanswered questions.
I also hope Nicalis doesn't strumpet it out with 57 ports with a new feature on each one. They're like the Billy Corgan of video games.
A legit sequel and not a port? I'm scared...
One of my favorite games of all time. Some hardcore whiny fans will complain "omg they will ruin the original masterpiece!!!!!1! DX"
But screw that. A Cave Story sequel (or prequel) would be a dream come true. So long as Daisuke Amaya is heavily involved, how could it not be good? Maybe not AS good as the original, but I imagine it will be hard for many to judge fairly with the nostalgia of the first title since it's pretty old now.

This is supposedly it, according to one forum, but it could be faked. Who knows.
I would love to see another Cave Story. There was a lot of stuff in the game that could easily open up to a sequel or prequel.
@Gorlokk
I think their whiny-ness has some merit though. A lot of amazing series were marred solely by tacking on crappy games. That said, I'd be willing to take the risk with Cave Story. It's one of my top 5 indie games (easy), and I didn't think the Wii Ware and 3DS re-releases were bad either.
Yes please! This game is utterly great. I do hope they go with the original graphics though, did not care much for how the one with 3D models looked (judging from screenshots/trailers).
Note: The one with 2D graphics and the 3D depth-filter on the 3DS is my favourite port.
I would love to see a prequel to the first game, one that would provide more information on the background of Quote and Curly and the events that happened before this game.
Cave Story is easily one of my favorite games. I'm not sure if I want a sequel, but I would definitely be willing to give it a try if one is made.
Holy mother of God, am I sleeping?! Pinch me! Someone! If this is true I will be able to die happily. Cave Story is my favoritest game of all time, I'm even call myself a fanboy of the game. A sequel would make my pass out from the first second of gameplay.
I kind of wish Pixel does not make a sequel.
However Nicalis should really step up and release the missing games and ports in Europe for Wii U & 3DS. Come on, Ikachan was released in North America like two years ago, but still not in Europe. And where is the eShop release of Cave Story 3D?
Pathetic.
I really fear that they will mess up the release of 90's Racer for Wii U in Europe also, even though the dev is from Greece!
Sweet!
I really enjoyed the first one.
I LOVED the first one! Day one download if true.
YES! I remember years ago I would play Cave Story all the time. Was a really good freeware game.
Wait, it's on Wii, DSi and 3DS? Wow! I never knew that, i'd like to play it on the go
Please let it be true! I love the first one so much I bought it three different times.
Cave Story is an incredibly special game to me. I'd love to see a follow up, but it would need to be natural. Pixel doesn't need to create a sequel just because fans are requesting it. The thing that made Cave Story so great was the fact that Pixel belabored over every detail. He doesn't need to do anything but make the game he wants to make, down to the smallest detail. It needs to be a natural progression of ideas, refined and tempered under intense judgement. That's what turned the Cave Story Beta in the Cave Story we played, and it needs to happen again.
Really love Cave Story though I came to it a little late. Pixel seemed able to adapt to modern times and modern platforms with simpler and shorter Kero Blaster so I'm very interested in what his take on Cave Story 2 would be.
Pfft, I always have gag names for the games on my computer, especially on my steam list. I have Half-Life 2 Episode 3, Duke Nukem Legacy, TimeSplitters Rewind, Portal 2 1/2: Chronicles of Chell, and my personal favorite, My Little Pony: Pipsqueak's Scary But(t) Fun Asylum.
Cave Story 2 would be too on the nose for me
Maybe the icon was just a copy of an original icon on his desktop and actually read, "Cave Story (2)" as in a duplicate of another shortcut
Sometimes a classic is a classic because it never gets a sequel to turn it into a franchise.
@rayword45 So bald, big egoed, breaks up themselves then hires a bunch of new guys and still calls it the same band, and they like to shake down in 1979?
@Vault-111 Except for the last part, pretty much yeah.
Also include copious amounts of suck.
