The Wii U eShop is really a great place for Indie games to thrive. Affordable Space Adventures, Scram Kitty and his Buddy on Rails, and Runbow are just a few examples of the kind of creative endeavors that the storefront plays host to and - to put things in a more positive light – the lack of heavy hitting AAA third party releases gives games like these more room to shine. Enter Hollow Knight, an upcoming Metroidvania that looks to take many artistic influences from Tim Burton's work.
After a successful Kickstarter campaign about a year ago, it was revealed that Hollow Knight would be coming to PC and Wii U. The unique artstyle and fast paced combat of this creepy Metroidvania particularly make this look like something that'll be worth your time, and amazingly enough, it's all been put together by just 3 people. It's anticipated release has now been pushed back to sometime in early 2016, so hopefully it'll be worth the short wait. Check out this trailer:

Looks awesome. Nice looking gameplay mechanics.
Looks good
I really like the art style looks awesome definitely on my radar ..
Looks good, but why's nearly everything from Kickstarter gotta be a sidescroller? Just something I've noticed.
Neat!
The only game I've ever helped Kickstart and I couldn't be more pleased.
I think this game will be every bit as good as my other indie favorites... Shovel Knight, 1001 Spikes, and Ori and the Blind Forest.
Alright! Looks good! I'm gonna have to get it when it comes out.
This looks awesome. I think I'm sold!
I thought it was a Shovel Knight sequel. I know those guys can't copyright "knight" but a 2dsides roller w/ a 2 syllable adjective describing a knight so soon after Shovel Knight bothers me.
Looks good. Reminds me of a game called Heck Yeah! on PSN. Though it's hard to tell stamp size on my tablet. But looking g good is the important part.
RCMADIAX could learn a thing or 33 million from these guys.
Also reminds me of Child of Light artistically, but much faster, that's a good thing too. I really don't like retro pixel graphics, minimalist artsy is ok. Not everything needs to be photo realistic HD, I just don't like pixels. It still bothers me amiibo skins can only be used 8 bit in SMM, b/c I never use that look, why should I when we have the modern one?
Good luck team cherry, awesome logo.
I like the art style, and I'm always up for a good Metroidvania game. I'm curious to see how linear the gameplay will end up being. Regardless of that, this is now very high up on my interest list.
@Crimzonlogic well they are more easier than making a game in 3D. Usually when it is 3D it is a survival horror game for some reason
I'm very interested in this. The art style and gameplay ( Burton-Metroidvania) is speaking to my wallet.
lookin good. I agree there are a lot of 2D games on the eshop, so they can get lost in the mix, but they all have very different play styles and offer unique gameplay, which is great, but it's not always easy to promote your differences.
I kickstarted this a year ago and it's definitely coming along nicely.
Very similar to Ori and the Blind Forest actually, only with bugs underground and much more demanding skill wise I think.
I was had at "Metroidvania".
Yep- going to keep this one on my radar. Art style looks amazing.
This gonna be good.
@DiscoGentleman
Ditto.
Well, they had me at 'metroidvania'.
@rjejr
I'm not bothered by it. The aesthetics are completely different, and some mechanics seem a bit different, as well as the foes.
Still, I will like it to be a little longer than Shovel Knight...
@maceng Yes, I know, just makes me think o fall of those Candy Crush clones on mobile - Cake Crush, Cupcake Crush, Pizza Crush, my wife plays about a dozen of them.
Wow, trailer looks a whole lot better at 20" than 2". Reminds me of the old black and white Mickey Mouse cartoons. Or at least the levels in Epic Mickey based on those.
I'd seen this game before but not really take any note of it. But now it's definitely on my radar!
this looks great! i'm bummed that it not for 3ds.
Looks good. I'll buy.
drool
The game is looking fantastic.
Looked to have so much potential at the kickstarter and now it looks like it might be beyond expectations. Really great work for just 3 people and could fill a 2D Metroid-sized hole, even if it fills it with a smaller square peg.
@rjejr Y u hate pixel?! This is one area where we widely diverge in taste. I prefer all of the bare pixel graphic styles of Mario far above the new one when playing and making levels in Mario maker. Fast paced side scrollers are just less taxing and can demand more precision when the art style allows for clarity. The new style is nice, but it's almost offensive how the backgrounds and doodads all clash and mix together.
I get it though. Abstraction through blocks is limited and was built on technical limitations you'd rather leave behind. And I do appreciate all the other beautiful abstractions games have come up with on modern tablets and smart phones and high-res screens to accomplish the same purpose. I wish Nintendo would embrace that in a game or two, but 3DS wants you to see every pixel even if it is in 3D. :/
All that said, this is great and I'm glad it's not pixelated. It has an almost Hayao Miyazaki-eque look to the animation. A bit anime, but not the popular homogenized junk, just an aesthetic that embraces expressing form and motion through minimal, but carefully considered line work.
I'm going to have to buy this game. I just hope the themes and content aren't too morbid.
Looks incredibly charming
@aaronsullivan "Fast paced side scrollers"
You might have solved the riddle right there as you know I don't like "fast paced" anything. Yoshi's Woolly World looks and plays great to me. I'll take that speed and those graphics anyday. I'd prefer them in open world though. Nothing is ever fast in open world, I prefer the slower pace and exploring.
Looks really interesting
Looks beautiful. I'm a sucker for 2D animation.
@Crimzonlogic Well it's not like indie developers are askin for millions of dollars for a 3D game or whatever. They're cheaper to make than most games.
Thanks for doing this post. I had no idea Hollow Knight existed but now I've got it pre-ordered. Good thing for all those people who made the kickstarter happen.
