When we reviewed LEGO Dimensions last year we enjoyed various aspects of it, with the NFC technology used in clever ways and some stand-out levels winning our favour. However, it's also a game - or 'platform' - that's particularly aggressive in its upselling, locking a lot of extra content and even areas within the core campaign behind diverse ranges of toys and packs that can be purchased separately. Just likes its rivals in the toys-to-life space it's very keen to get top dollar out of players.
Not all of the figures and level packs seem like particularly good value, but perhaps the Midway Level Pack is a stronger offering. Along with the usual unlockable character, vehicle and dedicated level content, there's also an area where you can access and play a whole load of retro arcade games, including some memorable examples. A press release excerpt is below.
The Midway Arcade Level Pack comes with a buildable Gamer Kid minifigure and G-6155 Spy Hunter vehicle and Arcade Machine – all playable in the game, and unlocks more than 20 classic arcade games from Midway Arcade as an exclusive level. These classic games include Seven Twenty, Badlands, Blasteroids, Championship Sprint, Defender, Defender II, Gauntlet, Gauntlet II, KLAX, Joust, Joust 2, Marble Madness, Paperboy, Rampage, Road Blasters, Robron, Spyhunter, SuperSprint, Timber, Toobin, Cyberball, Vindicators and Xybots.
Considering the fact you can find the pack at a decent price online (under $20 if you shop around) it may be one of the better value add-ons out there. The core campaign hit a high point in a stage dedicated to retro gaming, so it seems to be an area close to the hearts of the development team.
If buying all of the extras is your thing, meanwhile, the DC Comics Superman and DC Comics Aquaman and Ghostbusters Stay Puft Fun Packs are also out now.

Midway?! they alongside with Nintendo, I miss the Cruis'n saga...
Super sweet!!!
If it werent for that long term deal with Knex, we may have seen Nintendo Universe characters in Dimensions.
That is a must get! So many good games in that collection.
@SakuraHaruka Amen to that, arcade racing seemed to culminate with the Cruisn' series.
This is the last pack that I am likely buying for LEGO Dimensions. Should be in the mail today, can't wait to play it. I would have likely held off on buying it but Amazon dropped my pre-order price to $13.99 so I went for it.
I'd buy this set just for the car itself, and I don't even have the game.
Why, WHY???!!! How much money is one man supposed to spend on games??!!! This looks awesome...and here I thought I was avoiding this game...
This locks awesome.
I kinda just want that little lego arcade machine. I don't give a damn about any in-game functionality.
Inb4 Mortal Kombat Pack
Wait, who owns Midway now?
Robron? Is that a Robotron 2084 endless runner?
Still don't have the game, only the 2 Dr. Who packs, but we'll probably pick this up when we do.
FYI I saw the $90 starter pack on sale this week at several retailers (NA) for $60, this $30 pack for $20.
Ha! I'm not sure there was ever better 4-player fun than Gauntlet.
Cool
Where is Robotron 2084? That's is one of my all-time favorite arcade games of all time.
Picking it up after work, looks awesome.
@Nico07 $13.99? Wow, it's £30 here. It's the game that keeps on taking.
Looks like a fun buy for those who own Lego Dimensions
You could say rebought, since Warner Bros. division Warner Communications owned Atari Inc. during their late 70s/early 80s heyday. When Atari Corp. (the computer division) was spun off in 1984, they retained the arcade division which ended up part of Midway and provides most of the classic library.
What? No Hydro Thunder???
MADNESS!!
Please please please please Warner Bros put these classics on Wii u vc!! Hell I'll even take them on ps4 and or xone!!! Cmon guys?!?! Would love to see it happen and NOT getting Lego dimensions anytime in my life....so again please!
@PowerStar midway classics all owned by Warner Bros games! They need to post these in Wii u for individual sale!!
@Dark-Link73 robotron 2084 one of my all time favorites of all time to this day! Still offers such a level of fierce intensity that many of today's games lack! Simply an amazing game and if I had to make an all time top 20 list this would be within the first 5!! Need to get this game and many other Midway classics on Wii u, ps4 and xone ASAP!! I'll even take a compilation disc!!
Got the Midway arcade collection on the original Xbox for 5$.
They aren't worth that much.
Midway games are junk.
I thought Midway went under?
@mikegamer
They did, and they were acquired (along with most of their assets) by Time Warner.
Key questions for me are: what's the quality of the emulation, is it like Midway Arcade Origins quality? Second question: how long does it take to access the arcade games and what customisation options are there? I wish the controls in Midway Arcade Origins were more customisable: playing Defender is kind of frustrating when you cannot disable left/right on the stick/dpad - very uncool.
There's games here that aren't in Midway Arcade Origins for PS3 that would make this worthwhile to me, but not if I have to slog through a lot of Lego game to get to them.
It's a whole lot cheaper to buy the collection on PS3 or 360 for $9.99.
Totally picking it up today! Looking forward to playing Rampage!
Klax, Blasteroids, Timber and Road Blaster really should be on Midway Arcade Origins, not sure why they aren't. Still it does have Tapper and Wizard of Wor...
@shaneoh
Eww, Time Warner
@mikegamer
Could have been worse, could have been Disney.
@mikegamer the midway classics library now owned by Warner Bros games.
First Dimensions set to pique my interest actually. That Defender cabinet in official LEGO form. Almost worth the price of admission when you are thinking in LEGO economy.
Only thing is the world itself seems a bit uninspired for such a great theme. :/
But Defender...
I got it and played around with it some today. It's not bad, especially for a new area. The puzzles all revolve around beating a retro character to access a space for your arcade machine accessory, which lets you play the game the character was based off. The Spy Hunter car looks sweet, too, better than the Ecto-1 IMO. It almost has a Retro Game Challenge vibe to the level, since to progress, you have to clear some benchmark in the arcade games. Very cool. The Lego arcade cabinet accessory is quite neat, and opens up some modding ideas.
I'd pay £30 for these arcade classics on VC any day. On that note I'd also pay £100 for gauntlet, 1,DD 2,3,4,5,6,7,8 on WiiU
