It's that time of the week once again for the Media Create Japanese chart results, and there are a few notable new arrivals to consider. All told, it's a mix of good and bad news for those following the fortunes of titles on Nintendo hardware in Japan.
First up we have Story of Seasons: Trio of Towns, which shifted nearly 31,000 units in its second week and came in third behind new release Super Robot Wars OG: The Moon Dwellers on PS3 and PS4. Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and Minecraft: Wii U Edition both held onto top five places, adding modest sales to their totals.
Sadly Zero Time Dilemma has returned numbers perhaps befitting its niche status, selling less than 10,000 units between Vita and 3DS, with the latter sneaking into 20th place. There's some pleasing news for Yacht Club Games, however, with the Shovel Knight amiibo Set securing 13th place and 6,518 sales; you can see the top 20 below with lifetime sales in brackets.
- [PS4] Super Robot Wars OG: The Moon Dwellers (Bandai Namco, 06/30/16) – 70,392 (New)

- [Wii U] Super Mario Maker (Nintendo, 09/10/15) – 4,803 (905,422)
- [3DS] Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games (Nintendo, 02/18/16) – 4,502 (182,976)
- [3DS] Zero Time Dilemma (Spike Chunsoft, 06/30/16) – 3,916 (New)
Overall hardware sales have remained relatively steady this week, with PS4 leading the New 3DS LL (XL) at the top; the smaller New 3DS model did gain a decent number of sales as a percentage. You can see the results below with last week's sales in brackets.
- PlayStation 4 – 23,679 (22,715)
- New 3DS LL – 17,648 (18,836)
- PlayStation Vita – 11,461 (11,986)
- Wii U – 4,444 (4,358)
- New 3DS – 4,122 (3,208)
- PlayStation 3 – 1,265 (1,141)
- 3DS – 718 (707)
- 3DS LL – 82 (146)
- Xbox One – 73 (70)
We suspect Yacht Club Games will be celebrating its appearance in the Media Create charts, seeing its title make an impact at physical retail in Japan. It's unclear whether publisher Spike Chunsoft will have expected better for Zero Time Dilemma, but in any case it's had a modest launch.

Is Mario Maker going to make it to 1 million in Japan?
The zero escape series has never done that well at all in Japan, surprisingly it's main fanbase and popularity is here in the West. I'm pretty sure the main reason that Zero Time Dilemma is coming out now when it was announced many years ago is that it's production was put on hiatus due to underwhelming commercial reception in Japan. So, in this case, it's likely that the western charts are more important for this game, so let's hope it does well here!
@Gerbwmu Easily so I reckon, by the end of the year at least
Probably Japanese players have many visual novels to choose from. We have like... two/three series?
VLR sold just as badly, which is what made the ZTD announcement so surprising and amazing.
Review when, NL? The game has been out for over a week.
Dragon's Dogma Online!? That was announced a while ago. When's it coming to North America! Arghhhhhhh!
Unsurprising that Zero Time Dilemma did poorly. Maybe the Japanese prefer their visual novels with totally cute and cliche anime tropes.
@Zanark As I recall, Danganronpa is much more popular over there.
Now, I love Danganronpa, but that series is so anime that it can barely function at times.
When I was trying to get Zero Time Dilemma while on vacation at Las Vegas everywhere was sold out so hopefully that means the West is doing well sale numbers wise. Either that or they decided to give a low amount of stock which I wouldn't say would be good, but at least they had their expectations in check? I don't know I just hope the game does well. I would love to have more games in the style of the Zero Escape series and good sales numbers would be encouraging.
Is great to see Kirby still in the top ten! Am looking forward to getting it myself.
When will NL be posting a ZTD review?
@Zanark I love Japan I really do but most of their visual novels seem kinda "eh". (although that mainly applies to the super cutesy romance ones....which is a lot of them) The only ones I'm really into are Zero Escape, Ace Attorney and Danganronpa. (oh and Steins Gate)
Ill be keeping an eye on shovel knight to see if it becomes a top seller
Don't disrespect Shovel Knight Japan!
Not sure it means it's had stellar sales, but Zero Time Dilemma is in the top charts on the eShop, in the UK at least. I think it's at number 2. Well, it was when I checked yesterday.
I'll get it when it's on offer.
4,444 sales for Wii U in Japan is so appropriate for a dead console
I bought ZTD for 3ds and vita to show my love and respect for the series. It was really good and heartwrenching as always
I dont know why:( ... its such a good game.
@BranJ0 I think it's also because there aren't many Japanese visual novels in the West. In Japan they have them in dozens but here, when one comes out, and when it's good, it gonna grab some attention.
@KTT I suppose, but when you look at the sales of Ace Attorney Spirit of Justice in Japan, another visual novel game, which are very very good (a game I'm very excited for!) it makes the zero time dilemma sales pretty disappointing. I've never played any entry in the series, although it does look quie good to me, but it just seems a shame that Japan haven't caught onto this quite as well as the west.
