Ah, the humble trademark. Few things get the brain buzzing as fast as a company registering a name or title linked to your favourite game or console. Of course, when it's tied to the GameCube - a console that's very much back in vogue thanks to the arrival of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in December and the announcement that GC controllers will be supported on Switch - Nintendo fans like us get really excited.
So it turns out Nintendo has registered three new trademarks in Japan, which are all tied to the GameCube brand. While we're clearly nowhere near a GameCube Mini yet - we're still waiting on that N64 Mini, Nintendo - it does suggest Ninty has plans to use its boxy console’s legacy for something.
But what could it be? Share your predictions in the comments section below...

Mine is still plugged in! I should give it another spin for old times sake...
As wild as a GameCube mini would be i would think an N64 mini would be next. Now if you want to hint at GameCube games on Switch??? SIGN ME UP!!!!! 😁😁
Gamecube Classic Edition! With a "more" stock than the SNES!
um the gamecube controller being released for smash? or was thta gonna be released without the trademark filed?
Anything with GameCube is a win. I don’t care what it will be.
I won’t get my hopes up until it is officially announced.
Can I just have 'classic' games on my Switch instead of having to buy and find another place to plug in another unnecessary console, please?
How about a physical Gamecube HD Collection series of re-releases (maybe with some extra content / love.) for Switch. Imagine that on your shelf! Compatible with GC controller and new Wavebird Pro
@GrailUK I'm throwing money at the screen.
I don’t care how they do it, I just want to play GameCube games again.
GameCube games on Switch please, having played a few on Dolphin at 1080p and above I can safely say many of them still look fantastic. Or just give us a GameCube mini as it would be a much better fit than an N64 one.
For now I'll continue to use my Wii for all things GameCube as I have a HDMI adapter for it and Luigi's Mansion looks great on the big screen, shame its not coming to Switch
Let's do an N64 Mini first, shall we? Never a good idea to mess with the order of the Universe...
How about putting the games on a console that people already own and you're still supporting....you know like the Switch?
I was just thinking about preordering the GameCube controller adaptor rerelease. I would do it in a second if they announced GC games on Switch.
Same as all the other trademarks for old properties. Renewing it so they keep the rights and nothing more.
How about SwitchCube? It links to your account so you don't need to buy all of your games again and it works like a console and not a portable device.
It’s probably nothing. But I was just about to get a GameCube, and I don’t want to waste my money...
I’m with everyone else. GameCube is my all time favorite console, with the Dreamcast a close second. Both had small numbers of games, but most were just fantastic games.
Writes article about new Gamecube trademarks being registered.
Doesn't write what those trademarks actually are.
C'mon guys this is worse than the time you made a guide about heart pieces in Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition and didn't actually say how to get them.
I'm trying not to get too excited since this could very well not mean anything. I missed out on the GameCube back in the day and would welcome a mini version, though!
...And I'd also like a N64 Mini while they're at it.
I still have all my Gamecube games... I just don't have a Standard Def TV to play them on...
I seem to always skip a generation of Nintendo consoles. I had the NES back in the 1980s but not the SNES. Then I had the N64 but not the Gamecube. Then the Wii but not the Wii U. Now I have a Switch.. That being said, I would buy any Nintendo Mini that they wish to (or are going to) produce... just as long as I can get my hands on one. 😀
Disclaimer: Atheist, but born and raised in southern usa but no other phrase shows my desperation.
Sweet Baby Jeezus, please let this be a thing.
It is interesting that this is 3 new trade marks rather than a renewal. I'll wait to hear more (want a n64 mini first...even if my collection is pretty solid on n64) but I will say for the n64 mini and the gamecube mini...I'll fight a scalper in the store to get one.
Edit: looks like a trademark renewal. Even 3ds got one.

How hard would it be for them to release an official N64 Smash Bros port for switch to tide over fans as we count down the release days? Or melee for that matter?
Make it an actual cube 😍
It could be simply so they can keep exclusive use of the name for their newly manufactured Gamecube Controllers, and nothing more than that.
How to make the best new cube.
1. Take a Switch
2. Remove the screen and big battery.
3. Add 3 extra data card slots, so it can have a lot of memory for games.
4. Put it in a Gamecube like shell.
Sell with Switch game card that has 10 Gamecube classic game on it.
And stand-alone game with 10 Gamecube classic and 10 N64 classic.
Done.
The only GameCube game I still play is monkey Ball for the monkey target game. Sega should release a standalone monkey target, hell I would even buy a switch to play it on.
I would preorder in a HEATH BEAT!!! I'd also got an N64 mini. I know the games just look, bad now, not all of them. But would be so nice set up in my games room.
Would Ninty go so far as to do a Wii Mini in a few years? Or is it way too soon?
I’d be interested in a GC Mini, but I’d rather we get an N64 Mini first.
@GrailUK I want all GameCube games to get a hd remake on the switch. Someone on Reddit the other day, suggested Star Fox Assault HD. I would JUMP on that!
I can't wait for the GameCube mini, I actually have a GameCube skin on my Switch. That being said, let's go in order. N64 first please.
I love my SNES Classic. Never got the chance to play Super Punch Out as a kid, so playing it on the Classic was a first for me. It's my go-to game lately.
Still plugged under the tv but I’ll welcome it. Would want a 64 mini First tho
Trademarks aren't news as it is just something companies have to do plus you didn't even say what the three trademarks are.
Just another one of the useless new stories on this site.
GameCube classics for Nintendo Switch.
My wallet is ready.
What a console, it had great games such as ResidentEvil remake, Melee, Luigi's mansion, Pikmin, Mario party 4, Metroid prime, Wind Waker to name a few.
If Mini Gamecube can play Actual Gamecube disks and Streams over to Nintendo Switch as monitor = Portable Gamecube as long Mini Gamecube can be turned on with Internal batteries.
@mailman
"Rather than waiting forever for Nintendo, use dolphin or mod a Wii /WiiU."
Play your Gamecube games on Wii machine, not by Emulator Dolphin.
theres not even any good gamecube games
As long as it got Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, F-Zero GX, Eternal Darkness, Resident Evil remake, Tales of Symphonia, and Skies of Arcadia Legends in there then it's a must buy for me. Having the proper Tales of Symphonia in 60fps 720p would be awesome.
@ogo79 You are definitely mistaken there. There are plenty of amazing GameCube games. Did you even own a GameCube?
@ogo79 Metroid Prime? Windwaker? F-Zero Gx? Paper Mario: TTYD?
Rogue Leader?
Can't you tell this news excite me?
@ReaderRagfish I love this. And I hope it happens.
Unless we know something specific, I'll assume that it's your average copyright updates and that this is prime Clickbait.
@ogo79 It's ok, we're all wrong sometimes. The GameCube has a great catalogue of games, to name a few from memory:
Legend Of Zelda: Wind Waker
Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Legend Of Zelda: Collector's Edition
Legend Of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures
Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time Master Quest
Super Smash Bros: Melee
Star Fox Adventures
Star Fox Assault
Animal Crossing
Luigi's Mansion
Metroid Prime
Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
Fire Emblem
Wave Race: Blue Storm
Paper Mario
Pikmin
Pikmin 2
F Zero GX
Pokemon Colosseum
Pokemon XD: Gale Of Darkness
Super Mario Sunshine
Ikaruga
Eternal Darkness
Soul Calibur II

Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers
Lord Of The Rings: Return Of The King
Super Monkey Ball
Madden NFL 02-08
Geist
Tony Hawk's Underground 2
I don't want another mini console. I want to take my games with me on the Switch! I would like to believe this is a sign of Gamecube ports or collections coming to Switch. I mean, the Switch is gonna support GC controllers anyway so why not?!
If we do get a Gamecube mini then they must capitalize on the Game Boy Player and add on GBA and Game Boy games too. But that too I would prefer supported on Switch!
@Majora101 If you're trying to make a list of great GameCube games, you really should be leaving Shadow the Hedgehog off of that list....
@AlphaElite To be fair, the same can be said for most if not all 3D Sonic games. They're terrible, but they're great. This extends to the True Crime series, as well. Like movies, some games are just so bad they're good! Gotta love 'em!
Sure
@mailman
That's the Right way to play Gamecube games on different Nintendo machine (Wii).
I play my Gamecube games on my old Wii with AV2 HDMI Converter + HDMI Cable to upgrade the graphic.
@Majora101 As a Starfox fan so desperate he's willing to forgive some nonsense, I would have to disagree with Starfox Adventures. It was bad, and not even bad in a funny way, like most Sonic 3D games. It was just painful to play, and on top of this, it didn't age well either. They basically pasted over some generic dino ip and inserted Fox, and it showed.
Assault was pretty ok though. I'd like for them to have another crack at the third person shooter aspect with Fox again, but done better. But as a Starfox fan, Ive learned to be content with the minimum. Lol
That aside, I'd pay full pricetag for HD collections of Zelda, Pikmin, and Metroid Prime on my Switch. It'd be nice to have them all on a few switch cartridges, rather than those tiny, fragile, discs. Especially with the inevitable Pikmin and Metroid Prime sequals.
Gamecube mini is a bit problematic. A lot of the good games have been remade or enhanced, as well as released on multiple consoles. And there's not very many to begin with, nothing compared with the SNES. It also cannot be properly emulated without not being emulated at all. And then there's storage, as we're no longer talking cartridges here.
Sadly not even the theoretical N64 mini holds the same appeal for me as the wonderful SNES mini. Never liked the N64 graphics, and hated how they rendered the work of pixel artirts (who drew textures for poligonal models pixel by pixel for the first two 3D generations) worthless with muddy filtering, and the low texture RAM requiring them to struggle with programming logic instead of dealing with artistic choices that PS1 pixel artists were very free to do.
So I wonder if there's anything aside from the Mega Drive mini to look forward to, but then there's their dubious choice of partnership and their general low level of competence. The Saturn mini would be cool, but it's a nightmare of a design, and I doubt the guys left at Sega know anything better than how to spill coffee on the blueprints. (to think they used to have people who could make 1:1 PC ports in a very short span)
Great but let’s not skip generations! #N64Forever!
It's for their new paid online services in September.
@Anti-Matter How does that upgrade the video quality? I use component cables with the 1st gen Wii (as well as with the WiiU) and I don't see what a converter would do that's in any way positive. And if you have an HDTV that can bypass digital processing and send the analog signal straight to the panel (game mode usually does that, utilizing strictly the digitally-controlled but otherwise analog picture tuners) that's even better. Both Wii and the WiiU don't use digital post-processing when outputting via component, so that way it's straight analog beginning with the rendering process all the way to the screen.
@Harmonie I feel ya!! I was out of space on 2 TVs So What I did this year was I located a Snes mini on eBay that has 6,000 classic game on it. Complete libraries for Nes, Snes, Genesis, Atari 2600/5200/7800, Colecovision, Neo Geo, Turbographx 16, Sega CD, etc etc! Even has 350 MAME original arcade games and 265 psone games!! It’s simply amazing and as a result, I bought a second one and then i UNHOOKED my original Genesis, Nes, Snes Atari systems and my Nes mini, Master System, and now I have plenty of room for new hookups! Lol 😁
@LemonSlice
I plugged AV2HDMI from my Wii to my Sharp Aquos TV and the result was a little bit better for Gamecube games, but quite washed out for Wii games.
I had ever tried with Wii component cables but i wasn't really satisfied as i compared with AV2HDMI.
I hope it isn't a mini system because i'm honestly sick of them already. Not everyone is able to get their hands on a mini system even when they can afford it. It's a limited supply when these games should be available to everyone to purchase on the Switch.
@Anti-Matter Sorry, but you're going about it the wrong way. Component vs composite is night and day. We're talking six (and better quality) picture 'components' instead of only two.
Analog component: 6
Digital component: 6 in 8-bit
Analog RGB: 3
Digital RGB: 3 in 8-bit
Digital SRGB: 3 in 10-bit
YCC: 3
Composite (analog by default): 2, but basically 1.5 in practice
Nothing beats component video, it's what Blu-ray uses. And if you output composite you already lose almost 90% of the available definition and color accuracy, regardless of all the mumbo-jumbo inbetween.
@LemonSlice
Hm.... Analog Component for Wii ?
I will search from Ebay.
I’ve said before the N64 is my all time favorite console and that still holds true. I would certainly scoop up a N64 Classic should it ever come to fruition
However, the GameCube comes in not too far behind in terms of my favorite Nintendo consoles. It was released during my freshman year of college. I traded in my N64 and all my games (not easily) to get one and proceeded to have some of my best gaming memories al throughout my undergrad and up until the Wii came along. I tend to not hold on to old consoles due to lack of space and time to actually play them (with the Wii U being the exception. I passed it down to my daughter after getting a Switch). But if I had know we still be without a GameCube virtual console to this day, I would have made an exception for that as well.
Tales of Symphonia
Skies of Arcadia Legends
Windwaker
Paper Mario: 1000 Year Door
Baten Kaitos (x2)
All of these are GameCube masterpieces.
But even more important, these are among the greatest games ever made!
My Gamecube is in "hiatus" since its laser problem..., but, all my gamecube games, controlls and memory card work very well (obviously because Wii retrocompatibility).
Well, then to wait that plans has Nintendo for the Gamecube system (well, still left N64)
I’m pretty much desensitized, when it comes to the obnoxious GameCube rumor mill. They’ve had years to do it, and they haven’t. Meanwhile, Sony has been offering PS2 games for, what, about ten years? They’re obviously not going to be a part of the online subscription (that would be like giving the games away for free, and they’re not going to do that). With them retiring VC, and considering that Switch will be eighteen months old by time it receives NES games, I’ve given up hope.
These rumors suck.
I'd be happy if they just skipped the N64 and jumped straight to GameCube. There just aren't enough quality titles on N64 which aren't lost in trademark hell.
me too - N64 graphics just aren't as beautiful as 8-bit/16-bit sprites as well as Gamecube games. I wouldn't say no to Paper Mario, Megaman Legends 1+2, though
Still have six of these boxes here, four of them for MK:DD 16 player LAN, one stored safely in its awesome LoZ:WW box, and that beautiful ToS edition which I used to play on on my own.
One of the greatest consoles ever imo, but that probably has a lot to do with the fact that it was the first TV system I bought myself that I had money to get games for. And what amazing games those were, and still are today!
@Spectra that is if switch is able to emulate those gamecube games. some are heavy! with that said
Hmm... a GameCube mini would definitely need Viewtiful Joe on it!
@Heavyarms55 I think since they still support VC with 3ds the game boy line of mini consoles would be a waste of their resources.
But yes how I would rather just have those games on my Switch.
It's probably just related to the GameCube controllers, in my opinion.
The Switch has got me back into gaming, mostly because it’s portable. A mini-console is the opposite of what I’d like - give me the games; but let me keep my freedom! And I would empty my wallet for GC games on Switch!
I am all in for a Gamecube Mini! But it must (and it surely will) have Super Mario Sunshine.
I still have my GC hooked up. Plus I have a modded Wii with clean rip & nintendont to play my PSO games online.
@PhilKenSebben I did think about setting up a joint bank account with Nintendo so they can just take my money directly, would save our screens from getting scratched.
Well, considering GameCube was a commercial failure like Virtual Boy and Wii U (for those who are going to argue with that, it took BOTH the DS and the GBA to keep Nintendo from losing money during the GC era), why?
The only Nintendo console that I cared for was SNES. So I don’t care for their other consoles. (Except for Switch of course).
Nintendo getting ahead of themselves, we still need to get a N64 Mini first.
The N64- and Gamecube mini would need far more powerful hardware then the NES- and SNES mini. Nintendo would either have to sell them at a high price point or take a very low profit margin. Neither would sound very interesting for a lot of consumers or for Nintendo. Personally, I think we'll eventually see selected N64 and GC games being released with the Nintendo Online service.
@Majora101 @Matthewxcv
@Luigi21
@ogo79 Hello, Newman
@Majora101
hey hows it goin over there?
me im doing splendid
I love GameCube! It'd be awesome if they did something, anything really, with it.
I never had my own since I only had an Xbox at the time, but I loved my sister's GameCube. She and my brother-in-law gave me some games and 3rd party controllers when I got the Wii and I've bought more games on my own. It's the only reason I still have the Wii after getting a Wii U.
i wish they recreate GameCube again .. the fun we use to have with it is indescribable
the Cube shape gave you a different thrill, where you don't fine it in Switch or Wii . i hope they reconsider GameCube again.
Unlikely for similar reasons of N64 mini being unlikely, it needing 4 controllers and that'd be a lot of extra periperhals for a specialty system. Would be better to make wireless Gamecube controllers which are Switch compatible and release the games on Switch (which would be a dream come true. Not super likely, but...here's hoping).
If I had to choose, here's my Gamecube list for what I'd want to appear on VC:
Kirby's Air Ride
Mario Kart Double Dash
Super Mario Strikers
Mario Tennis
Animal Crossing
Sonic Adventure 2 Battle
Pikmin 1 or 2
Zelda Wind Waker
Tales of Symphonia
Fire Emblem : Path of Radiance
Luigi's Mansion
Super Monkey Ball 1 or 2
Super Smash Bros Melee
X-men Next Dimensions
Bloody Roar: Primal Fury
Soul Caliber 2
Naruto Clash of Ninja 2
Phantasy Star Online with much boosted exp and rare drop rate and free online
~Mega Man Command Mission
Unlikely, but Sonic MegaMix + Sonic Gems collections.
Without Fire Emblem I would not buy this.
