We have a bumper edition of the Japanese charts to share with you this week, as Media Create sales for the last week of 2018 and first week of 2019 are now in.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is consistently knocking it out of the park, remaining on top spot every week in the region ever since it released just over a month ago. Go Vacation, Diablo III: Eternal Collection, and Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story + Bowser Jr.’s Journey also launched in Japan over the last couple of weeks with varying levels of success - we've already discussed Mario & Luigi's disappointing start. Twice, in fact.
Here are the top 20 for both weeks (first numbers are that week's sales, followed by total sales in brackets):

The Switch version of Dragon Quest Builders 2 is now outselling the PS4 version. That's great! I love the first DQB and I can't wait for the second one.
The big surprise is Super Mario Party. It's holding up great.
Not really suprising about Mario & Luigi as you can buy the DS version of that game and it will work in your 3DS completely fine.
Nintendo Switch = It prints Money !! 🤑
Clearly Nintendoomed. I mean, the PS4 is still selling. If any other console so much as exists, Nintendo is doomed. It's got too many ports and not enough 3rd party at the same time! It's got too many NES titles and no legacy content support at all and most importantly, it doesn't have the only 2 games in the entire universe that matter, Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA V. Smash sold 2.5 million units? Doesn't matter, not GTA or RDR, so it doesn't matter. Doomed.

[edit] I mean really guys! I am as serious as as a politician making a promise! And when has a politician ever lied?
Healthy console sales. Good stuff
Its getting so oldd seeing two “3dS iS dYiNg” articles, when the Switch mini budget 200 dollars or under SKU comes around, the 3DS will be fast down the road, until then its on Nintendo’s 2nd pillar since Nintendo is like the only player left in the handheld market after Vita walked out, I see the 3DS as the ipod touch for apple that stuck around for a bit since it was the only budget option left (until iphone SE)
@Heavyarms55 Some people just don't understand sarcasm, thats why i normally put "<---- Sarcasm" after something sarcastic now a days.
Now I wonder how disappointing the sales for Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn will be.
Hopefully this'll mark the end for the 3DS, and Nintendo can go all-in on Switch development. Extra Epic Yarn really should've been a Switch port, it could look stunning in HD.
What this'll mean for developers like Grezzo, Alpha Dream, and Good Feel will be interesting.
OMG does anyone even buy PS4 games in Japan? Doesn't look like it
#SuckOnThatPushSquare
@RupeeClock It would also likely have taken more work. Luigi's Mansion was probably basically a rom hack of Dark Moon to recreate the first game, and porting Kirby to 3DS means they don't need to worry about updating the visuals at all. As 3DS really doesn't look any better, than a Wii game on a decent TV, plus the smaller size means they can get away with more compression.
It'll be interesting to see how well NSMBU Deluxe does next week.
Splatoon 2's about to be dethroned. Smash is king baby.
I know it kindof sounds expected at this point, but I am amazed Smash is actually beating the Mario juggernauts. What was the last Smash game to outsell Mario Kart? Melee to Double Dash right?
Wow switch has surpassed 7 million sales
Well done Nintendo
wait what
Dragon Quest Builders 2 is out already??
@Heavyarms55
I wonder if Luigi's Mansion 3DS would've used the framework from Dark Moon, since they're different developers.
The former was ported over by Grezzo, the latter was developed by Next Level Games.
Also worth considering that they ported Yoshi's Woolly World to the 3DS, so I guess Wii U or Wii to 3DS was a sound business decision a couple of years ago, but now it doesn't seem worth it any more.
Speaking of Next Level Games, I'm wondering what they're working on now? I haven't heard of what they're working on since Metroid Prime Federation Force back in 2016.
@nagash only in japan
This year Nintendo owns the top ten in Japan . I can say for a software and hardware developer Nintendo has released some amazing titles within the last two years and some how they keep getting better, honestly Nintendo is phenomenal game developers .
Wow, the Switch will surpass total lifetime PS4 sales in less than two years. That’s a real feat if you ask me! And a sure way to secure Japanese third party support.
Weeks after release and Smash is still selling over a quarter of a million a week?! Most games couldn’t hope to sell that over the course of their lifetime sales.
The original version of Bowser’s Inside Story sold 193,000 copies on launch week in Japan. That mean BIS 3D on launch week in Japan sold less than 5 percent of the original on launch week also in Japan.
@ilovetotourz hello fellow MJ fan! We’re in for a tough time over the next wee while...
Previous totals sales numbers for past Smash Bros. Installments (in Japan)
3DS Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS 2.703.101
WII Super Smash Bros. Brawl 2.315.401
N64 Super Smash Bros. 1.632.046
NGC Super Smash Bros. Melee 1.349.418
WIU Super Smash Bros. for Wii U 789.947
Currently Ultimate is the second best selling Smash game and if this week it sells even half of what it sold from the 31st to the 6th it will outsell Smash 3DS as well.
@Mrtoad Outsell Smash 3DS with a fraction of the install base and at a higher price point.
Some people may not have liked how hard Nintendo pushed Smash Ultimate this year, but the strategy clearly worked: it set the charts on fire everywhere (except the UK, it seems).
It's almost as if the 3DS didn't really need a fourth Mario & Luigi game.
Too bad for Mario and Luigi. This game could sell really well in Switch.
Im glad its going well:D
2.6M WOOT! Big and exciting games sell and move hardware. This is what the Switch Needs.
Diablo, Go Vacation, Mario & Luigi continue the long line of rehashed fail... Make something NEW.
Wow, Mario & Luigi didn't even make it onto the second chart...
Nice to see the Switch version of Dragon Ball FighterZ making it onto the top 20 this week. It's still one of the best portable 2D Dragon Ball fighting game out there.
Now that will turn heads!
Top 20 software sales are crazy -20 games 15 of which on switch, 10 of them Exclusive Nintendo franchises.
Definitely had a conversation with someone after the Switch was revealed and before it was released that I wish I could back to and rub these sales figures in his face. He thought it was the stupidest idea and would never take off. It would only sell to the hard core fans.
I wonder if he ever caved and bought one.
I wonder how many Xbox One units have sold in Japan at this point? I genuinely find it interesting how different regions have different reactions to different consoles/trends/software/etc.
@Blitzenexx I think since release across all the Xbox One models, just over 100,000 units since launch.
@WiltonRoots: ...Ouch. That's actually lower than I guessed!
@Blitzenexx Yep nothing about the Xbox seems to appeal to the Japanese public. Consoles tied to the TV in general aren't doing well over there full stop.
@WiltonRoots: From what I know of the Japanese lifestyle - and I won't pretend that I'm an expert - your last statement makes sense. Heck, I think portable consoles are filling a similar niche in other countries. Being tethered to a TV isn't always the best gaming scenario anymore.
"Ports never do better than new games"
-Looks at the Switch version of Minecraft and MK8 DX and compares it to the sales of Battlefield V and COD-
"Right"
@Blitzenexx yep very true, the Switch has almost become like the MacBook of gaming, yes it will never have the oomph of a desktop pc (home console), but it makes up for that in spades with its convenience.
I guess it is time to start buying the 3DS games I want before they start to become rare.
Smash Bros Ultimate has now exceeded the LTD retail sales of Smash Bros 3DS and Brawl (~2.5 million each), doing so in just 5 weeks.
The next goal will be to outsell the LTD retail sales of Smash Bros 3DS + Wii U (~3.3 million), which will take a few months.
Super Mario Party will soon reach 1 million copies sold in Japan. The last time a Mario Party game sold that much was Mario Party 8 and DS back in 2007. Looks like the Switch has brought the series back to its glory days.
Meanwhile, Pokemon Let's Go sales continue to underwhelm. Mario & Luigi is a flat-out disaster.
[NSW] Go Vacation (Bandai Namco, 12/27/18) – 13,310 (New)
[NSW] Go Vacation (Bandai Namco, 12/27/18) – 21,826 (35,136)
Go Vacation numbers aren't very big at all, but it selling more copies in Week 2 than in Week 1 suggests that it will have strong legs going forward.
@ieatdragonz Yup. It was really close for Melee and Double Dash though. Melee sold 7.09 million and Double Dash sold 7 million (worldwide).
Brawl's still the highest selling lone console Smash (for now) at 13.29 million, but Mario Kart Wii sold a staggering 37.14 million.
Very happy to see Mario party smash the 1m figure. Kids here were playing it last night and having a ball...
@ilovetotourz agree completely. What bothers me the most is that if Nintendo keeps hearing these opinions, esspecially by youtubers, they may just just drop their dedicated handheld business in the future, thinking it's what everyone wants. I personally would love a more powerful 3ds. People like to call the switch a handheld but it's not ideal to take on the go. 3ds also has a more retro vibe. I als guarantee that people would still play gba games if Nintendo rereleased a gameboy. Getting offpoint, but Nintendo knows the 3ds is still killing it, and aside from a small loud minority the 3ds will only die if Nintendo chooses to kill it.
@Devlind I've already started, my 3DS collection is no way near as big as my DS collection.
Those hardware sales for switch and ps4 are very strong
Nice to see my favourite console ps vita hanging on there.
Switch software sales are amazing.
I agree with Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn, it would make a great port for Switch and would look absolutely gorgeous in HD. Throw in a yarn amiibo too. Switch would be the perfect console for the two player co-op mode too with the joy cons and they could probably keep the motion controls which are used sometimes.
Wow it is almost like the Switch is a huge success right now and everyone is totally over the 3DS and not interested in buying new games for it anymore!
Wow, it seemed like splatoon 2 and smash will both breaks the 3 million mark in Japan alone soon.
I'm still buying games for 3ds from time to time. But to be honest, none of the retail price games. I do hardly buy these on the switch or ps4 neither.
10-20€ has become my top price, while my purchase range normally goes up to 10€.
We are in a great era for gamers. Meanwhile the industry can keep up with these different range of prices, gamers will be able to taste and enjoy so much!
