Yesterday may well have introduced a few more NES games to play on your Switch, but it appears that they might not have been the only things added to the Nintendo Switch Online service in the update.
Just a few days ago, datamining efforts uncovered a total of 22 SNES games listed in the NES online app's code, and further digging also discovered the possibility of new emulator types being added to the service at a future date. Now, after yesterday's update and even more datamining efforts, it has been claimed that the SNES games are not only still perfectly intact, but have also been updated to include full descriptions in various languages.
A couple of these descriptions have been shared by Twitter user @OtherEhm and, as you can see, the descriptions look similar to those featured for each game in the NES library. Interestingly, @OtherEhm states that Super Mario World is the only game to have received an English translation so far, while a variety of different languages can be seen across other titles.

If true, these new finds would suggest that the service is slowly but surely coming together on Nintendo's end, potentially launching much sooner than anyone would have anticipated. Of course, none of this is official yet, however, and it's impossible to know for sure whether or not a SNES collection is on the way. It certainly feels like something's coming, but make sure to wait for an official confirmation from Nintendo before getting too excited.
We'll be sure to update you if that magical moment does indeed happen but, until then, let us know what you think in the comments below. Is it only a matter of time? Or do you think it'll never happen?

A release the day of the next Nintendo Direct maybe. That would be sweet.
Goody gumdrops.
I wonder if the "Nl" in that list is stated as "Netherlands".
If that's the case, a lot has been translated for us Dutchies already.
I figured they'd wait at least a year for the SNES games, so if they come soon, that would be a pleasant surprise.
Oh boy, nice line up! Still a lot missing for my personal raster, but when I read "Pilotwings" I got an instant throwback to my childhood! Sure, the other titles do that as well, but games like Pilotwings or Pop'n'Twinbee are not mentioned regularly when it comes to SNES. Happy to see them here!
I don't want to be too salty and jinx it. But I do feel they have taken their sweet time with this. I'd like to hope that the other 2 suspected emulators are an N64 emulator and a Game Boy/GBA emulator.
I'd be quite happy with a selection like that.
It would make sense as Nintendo have already said that the SNES and NES classic systems were a "one shot deal",and the online service is replacing the virtual consoles on the Wii and Wii U.
Time for a little Nostradamusing:
Nintendo releases an update that removes all traces of an SNES emulator.
People are super disappointed and say the online service is useless.
Nintendo announces SNES games.
People are happy and forget everything that happened.
@Rhaoulos,
Nah the haters will still hate no matter what Nintendo include with their online service,unless of course it's all totally free.
@Rhaoulos I really hope they skip the drama and just do it.
@johnvboy naw, that sort of person would still find a way to hate it, even free. Probably say that their 5000 dollar gaming PC and emulator rig plays the game at a slightly, hardly noticeable, better quality.
Makes sense to bring it in to give subscription numbers a boost ahead of their fiscal year report at the end of March. Hopefully that means it's on the horizon
gettin' real tired of these rumours 😒
it'll be believed when it is seen.
I don't think they'll be launched at once, if they ever do. It will be maybe 2 per month, or 1 NES and 1 SNES game every month. My theory.
But don't dataminers uncover what games are coming for NES, by the way? I never read an article about that.
If this turns out to be reality I’m subscribing super Mario kart online would be superb also pilotwings is great can’t believe they missed it off the SNES mini had to resort to playing it on the Wii u to get my fix
@pullmyfinger These games have been played to death by most people by now. NES games in particular are very dated and do not hold up well today. The SNES on the other hand has a lot more going for it and has games that still play well today, looking at you Super Mario World.
When will we get the January Direct
@pullmyfinger
I'd still have rather a dedicated online service, like inviting my friends directly to games, intead of ... err... here play some stuff you played before.
Don't get me wrong, I currently enjoy playing Super Mario Bros. 3 with a friend and it is VERY welcome, but this should be the icing on the cake and not the main feature of Nintendo Switch ONLINE (It does not say Nintendo Switch SNES, nor does it say Nintendo Switch NES).
@Kiz3000 Played to death I agree, but most is not all people. And they hold up well or not depending on personal tastes. I like NES games.
SNES titles have been played to death by most people too.
And don't forget that many people want a Virtual Console, they want to actually pay for each one of these dated and overplayed games.
@Lemmy_the_Koopa It is the icing on the cake. The main feature of NSO is online play itself. Let's not forget it.
Still won't bother with these, they are just not the retro games I'm looking for!
Just hope they remove that awful bottom strip overlay and add some cool rendering option. Fingers crossed :>
The Wii Shop (and access to its many SNES games) is being turned off at the end of this month. that might eb a good time to offer a new way to play SNES games. Fingers crossed!
I am already fairly excited for Kirby games. I really hope this isn't a hoax.
I want to play Kirby's Dreamland 3 with my gf.
Havent even downloaded the NES app yet and not all that fussed about downloading the SNES one. I have the mini consoles which i prefer. However, tell me we have GBA or N64 and i am so ready.
SNES games should have been available at launch for the online service.
But still, SNES is one machine with some fine games that everyone is more excited for than NES (and the SP versions of some versions)
@Heavyarms55
I hope it's a GBA emulator as this may cover game boy and game boy colour by default and that would save the other emulator for N64
@Morlock5K That's why I said it like I did "Game Boy/GBA Emulator"
I always think with this kind of stuff Nintendo (or someone inside Nintendo) actually wants this to leak. There's no reason to include any of this in your production build, and they know people are digging into every line of code.
@Heavyarms55
Cool, I would be more excited for the GB GBC and GBA titles than the SNES. So many awesome games!
Maybe they'll drop it for the Switch anniversary in a few months?
Having more content included in the online subscription is never a negative despite already owning the SNES Classic and most of these games physically and digitally on the Wii systems & 3DS.
I want Super Mario RPG on a portable system. It sucks that it wasn't added to the 3DS VC like Earthbound
@Morlock5K Me too! Nintendo's handhelds didn't get as much love from me as their consoles, so there are so many great GB, GBC, and GBA games that I have never played.
And a reason to sell more controllers
@Morlock5K I have a lot more nostalgia for those titles as well. But a lot of GBA titles were also SNES titles originally. So there is some overlap there.
I predict they will come as soon as the SNES mini sells out...
I’m gagging to play Super Mario World!
Seems logical that it will release quite soon, NES games is nice to have, but very few is truly excited about them.
SNES games holds up much better and are truly worth to play even today!
I would have been thrilled about this were it not that I've been given a SNES mini for Christmas. I'd happily trade Demon Crest for my Street Fighter if anyone's interested?
I'd be ok if this was real. I'd also be ok with Nintendo throwing this stuff in their updates just to mess with people and see how easy it is for people to datamine their stuff.
Really hope it's true, I'll be very happy if so!
I think it's very plausible, nay, probable. I hope a new Nintendo Direct is soon, there seems to be so much the fans are waiting for. The one I'm waiting for is Faxanadu for the NES classics! I can play that to death... Again...
@johnvboy You'd be surprised by the amount of people who still complain about free stuff. Also haters never forget.
@Heavyarms55 Sadly Nintendo is really good at pissing everyone off before doing something great.
Was on the verge of giving in to download Super Metroid for the 3DS VC, But may hold fire now. I am still desperate for Super Mario RPG to get released in some form again though. Really want that available portabley
@pullmyfinger you really need to grow up.
Just GIMME GIMME GIMME!!!
Playing Super Mario World on Switch would be awesome indeed..
@mantez I kind of don't want then to release SNES controllers for the Switch that are like the NES and Famicom ones they released.
Would rather they buddy up with 8BitDo to re-release the original SN30 and SF30 controllers that have the slanted Select & Start buttons, but allow official Nintendo logos on them.
My bet is that the Direct will finally be the seventh of February, later than expected, but they'll show a lot of good stuff and dates (Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing among them), and then they will release the SNES games at the very end of it.
That would be "their thing" for February (being NSMBU for January and Yoshi for March)
Just put this service out of it's misery already. It has nothing on offer that's even slightly substantial. It's been such a trainwreck so far that not even GameCube titles will save it at this point.
@the_beaver I'd recommend putting your Direct predictions here: https://www.nintendolife.com/forums/nintendo-switch/next_nintendo_direct?start=260
@pullmyfinger NSO is bad, get over it.
@Bliquid Agreed.
Seems at bit daft that it's a spell that put those Yoshi's in the eggs rather than then just being Yoshi eggs with baby Yoshi's in them, especially since when they hatch they are babies that you have to feed to make them grow up. Surely just having Bowser stealing the Yoshi's eggs would have totally worked here.
I will be looking forward to Super Mario All-Stars as it is my favorite way to play those games 😁
I'm confused. Mario world already has an English translation so why would that be a big deal. At this rate if they aren't going to offer it to anyone outside of subscribers I may as well turn to the dark side and emulate everything if they aren't going to put forth any actual effort.
@BensonUii
True, let me be the one to start. I'm excited about playing all the games mentioned but the idea of a (likely) slow trickle is bumming me out already. Nintendo has no reason to hold back. I want them to release a slew of games all at once.
I support the idea of having this big NSO update released during the next Nintendo Direct. It can't come soon enough!
If there's a GB/GBA Emulator on the way and I can play the Oracle games and Minish Cap on the Switch I will literally cry.
STUNT RACE FX! That is all.
Stunt race FX
Thats everything I need.
Can’t wait to play super Mario world for the how manyth time. At least we won’t need to buy it. Where’s Dreamcast games
please be soon! and please can these not be drip fed quite so slowly like the nes games.....it was 3 nes games and this month its now 2....not including SP as these are games already given out
@Jimez
Yep. People would have been way less critic towards the service, and that effort is clearly not costing much to Nintendo.
Well that could be fun. I'm still going back to the NES games between my other Switch titles, so I'm at least getting use out of that feature.
Please Nintendo, give us :
leaderboards for speed and score
achievements, goddam it !
online multi
more games than the usual suspects
translations of JP-exclusive gems like "Seiken Densetsu 3"
@MysticGengar @beazlen1 Stunt Race FX was the curtain call of childhood innocence. I'd almost forgotten about that game. That little bombshell hasn't even been released on any Virtual Console in the past or the Classic SNES. That'd be AMAZING if it hits the Switch. Would love to play it again.
Just gimme some daggone news, Nintendo! I want a Direct! cries into pillow Oh well. Generally, they have one around this time of year, here's to hoping.
Rumors and dataminers are sources for internet articles with a maximum age target of 13 years old. Simple as that Nintendo Life writers, whether you like it or not, that's the plain truth.
Seems natural for a Direct stealth drop. Maybe in Feb?
I really don't care. I don't want SNES games anyway. I want GBA games
@Kiz3000 In February of course ;p
Great! It will be time to complete Super Metroid again!
Cool. It'll be nice to get these, hopefully fairly soon.
I love how there were so many who whined about paying individually for NES/SNES games with the Virtual Console, clamoring for a subscription-based service, and now they are crying when they are given access to these games through a subscription-based service. Sad.
I'd be a little surprised if they randomly dropped it in the middle of winter. This seems like more of a Summer/fall release thing, something to drop at E3 to seem like a big announcement to please the fans without it costing much, to align it for the holidays. Though they have enough big announcements all through this year already....
1. I still don't want to get my hopes up.
2. I would love it if they dropped them all in February.
3. Though I bet when they do start adding them it'll be 1 or 2 at a time, not all at once.
@pullmyfinger I have both NES Classic & SNES Classic, I'm looking for unique titles there's been a couple for NES that were not on the classic, but most of these games are pretty old. There just isn't enough there yet that I feel I need to get the online service yet. Personally I don't do a lot of online play, so the only thing that makes it worth it for me is the right games hitting the system. Also I must say while a couple of the titles hit my fancy I'd probably still wait for a couple more gems i'm interested in playing would possibly be added. I'm not whining I'm just waiting for more to be offered that I want from the service.
I prefer the interface to the mini consoles. You can sort by release date, alphabetically, or by most frequently played. I also like that you can access instruction manuals.
@pullmyfinger Mostly the reason people complain is because Online used to be free in the first place....... The rest of the stuff they offer isn't for everyone either as well.
Please have online matchmaking for snes mario kart that would be so awesome. If your friends aren't playing it you can't jion so i think the jion freinds game sucks. As i have quite a few friends on my switch and none of them are ever playing 2 player nes games. Just imagine mario kart online and the most powerfull shell is a red one day 1 download even if it doesn't happen but i sure hope it does.
@GameOtaku they're talking about translating the little blurb/description in the game select screen. The one that tells you how cool super mario world is and why you should care about it.
Am I the only one who is actively hyped for mario all stars? SMB1 needs its old school skin but all stars is my favorite way to play SMB2, 3, and it's the only way I ever played lost levels.
It's obviously coming. They know the fans want other retro platforms on NSO, and the fact that they no longer intend to produce the NES and SNES Classic Minis pretty much seals the deal.
This would really make the $35 a year for the Nintendo Online family plan worthwhile for me. I wonder if we would continue to get 3 NES games a month along with 2-3 SNES games, or 3 total?
@Frontiersmann
I actually have doubts Super Mario All Stars is coming. I think they data mined Nintendo 3DS eshop for SNES games a while back and that game was listed but never came out on 3DS VC.
This looks great, but also makes me feel like a bit of a chump for having just bought a SNES Classic.
Shut up and take my money, damn it!
Based on some notable absences (assuming this list is true), I'm wondering if the Switch is getting collection releases for series such as Castlevania, FF, DKC, and Seiken Densetsu (already released in JP). Other games like SMRPG, Chrono Trigger and EarthBound may just be dangling carrots in the drip feed. But, who knows, we could even see a SMRPG+PM+TTYD package release, Chrono Collection, or (dare I say?) Mother Collection, right? No? ... Okay.
Start it with Super Mario Kart!
The promise of Online Battle Mode alone will be worth the subscription cost for many. Sure its friends only, but it would be popular among retro gamers!
I just want a virtual console so I can purchase my games and keep them forever; having a rental service is asinine as it is useless.
@HeroponRiki you know you can add games on to your SNES Classic right?
Good things come to those who wait; so wait until March 16th/16th of March.
Hype, hype, hype. Wake me when it happens.
I'm still waiting for GI Joe, the original Takara NES game to see the light of day. I know it will never happen but a man can dream.
The haters will simply complain that we don't have N64 games now. As for me though, I'm pretty happy about this. While I love the NES Online, I would also love an SNES Online, especially since I opted out of most of the SNES games for 3DS. If this turns out to be true, I'll be able to play Demon's Crest on the go. Aww yiss.
It a bit too slow moving for my taste even if the SNES are coming out now.
This service may only last the Switch lifetime. So they have to speed things up if we are gonna have access to classic game for a reasonable amount of time.
I would be fare more positive if the Online class games library was a separate project that would run beyond the Switch and across all future Nintendo platforms
@Slitth Well the Switch very well could have a decade long lifespan overall (like the 3DS still might) so the pace is still pretty decent over all. If SNES games come this year and a handful of N64 games in say 2021 that's still still a decent time frame.
I just hope there more than just the SNES mini games released because I already have one.
Its not like they have to retranslate them. They've had the ROM.
I have suspicions that this is fake.
They should have released one or two NES games a month, one SNES game, and one game from N64 or GameCube, and launched the service with like OoT or something. As is, it's just not exciting. I've played NES games "a little while" according to my Switch.
I don't get the excitement as we have all played the SNES games to death already
@LavaTwilight OMG yes!
Faxanadu on the NES was and still is one of my favorite games for the system. I still get the music stuck in my head now and then.
I find it believable, but, there's a big problem. People datamine, and it shows up on websites, and it's been happening for quite a while now that Nintendo must be aware that it's going to happen again and again. So, it seems like they'd start putting in fake information to fool people.
Nintendo needs to have a more consumer-friendly approach when it comes to digital purchases. A way to earn such, and therefore also a long-term consumer confidence would be allowing the carry-over of digital purchases, as realistically appropriate, and possible, to newer machines, even if there was a slight fee, to upgrade it for the newer hardware, or just make it run on the newer hardware.
@VHSGLITCH
Yes! Preach it! I don't play online so buying an online gaming service is a waste of money plus your collection will be curated of games of your choosing rather than having corporate types say what games you can have access to.
Didn't buy the NES controllers, but I would pick up an SNES controller (preferably just one)
They do this and i will sign up for a year sub without hesitation. NES felt a little too old school for me personally but SNES is the sweet spot.
Before there’s a run on 8bitdo SN30 gamepads, as a courtesy, I solemnly do say, the N30 Pro 2 and SN 30 Pro are the boom shakalaka bomb diggity.
@Joekun
8bitdo what Nintendon’t
@robr Yeah, I’ve had my eye on the SF30 Pro, but it’s a bit more than I want to spend on a single controller that doesn’t have HD rumble. I could see myself grabbing an SF30, but a Nintendo made controller without an extra charging cable would be nice.
@Joekun
No doubt Nintendo has more dynamics going on with their vibrators, and if Nintendo put out a SNES pad, and a SNES pad you want, I’d go that route too. Comparing within the 8bitdo range, however, I’d definitely reccomend the new N30 Pro 2 and most up to date SN 30 Pro over the SN 30 iterations. Improved ergonomics, 8 buttons (Dead Cells, Hollow Knight, Mother Russia Bleeds, etcetera), and USB C (newest N30 is still one of the many miniature USB 2 iterations), and proper home and capture buttons. They also sport gyro motion control and nice analog sticks, but that’s mostly mute since they really are not good for 3D twin stick games.
@robr Thanks for the info, much appreciated! I’ll check that out.
Those dreaming about a gba, let's be more ambitious... .it is time for super mario sunshine!...
Oh man, I need to play me some Demon's Crest!!!
@VHSGLITCH -_- Hacking a system is not a good idea at all. If SNES Classic has a set number of games, there's no reason to add more games to it. It just ruins the product.
@Alantor28 adding games I want onto the system makes the system far more enjoyable. Get your head outta the sand, kid.
@VHSGLITCH I'm 31 years old, dude. And I and possbily others are way mature than you. Calling us kids and attacking users just because they like something you don't like doesn't make you mature.
It's going to be a while. you have to consider that no one is gonna buy an SNES classic if they get same thing with their switch.
The nes classics waited a long time after nes classic to happen, so they'll delay snes stuff for same reason. Wait enough time after snes classic before they release something that literally competes with their own product.
