While Super Mario Sunshine certainly has its ups and downs, one element of the game that almost always causes a headache or two for new players is its Blue Coins.
There are 240 of these pesky little things to collect, but with no real way of tracking which Coins you've grabbed from each of Sunshine's individual worlds, it can be a pretty daunting task to reach 100% completion. To get each and every one of them, you're probably going to find yourself hitting up Google more times than you'd like, but that's where this fan-made app comes in.
Aspiring developer Noah Ortega has created a free app, without any ads, that can be used by players to track their Blue Coin collecting progress. Using a guide already shared on StrategyWiki.org as a starting point for the app, they went on to add a checklist, screenshots, and even videos of each Coin being collected to help you hunt them down and remember which ones you already have.
"This was a labour of love, I posted it for free with no ads, so I hope you'll check it out if you're interested," says Ortega on Reddit. "Additionally, feedback and suggestions are appreciated!"
You can download it for yourself from Google Play here (it's only available on Android for now). If you find it helpful, make sure to let us – and Noah – know how you get on.
List of features:
- A display of individual level and total completion percentage
- A checklist for each level (accessed by tapping on a level's icon)
- Uniquely named blue coins to help you keep track of what you've collected
- Description/Guide for each coin (accessed by tapping on a coin in the list)
- An image for each blue coin, displaying the location of the coin in the level
- Link to a Youtube video of each blue coin being collected (recorded by us)
- Secret celebration for every user that reaches 100% completion! (similarly disappointing)
- Free with no ads!!!

I love how the app says its 100% completion reward is similarly disappointing. It felt like such a slap in the face when I was younger.
F. THOSE. COINS.
Here before "but how will I play Super Mario Sunshine after March 31st!? The world is ending etc".
That’s incredible, this person is doing Gods work lol (or Nintendo’s, I suppose). I’ve yet to replay Sunshine on the 3D Collection but I’ll definitely be using this app when I do!
Edit: Just read the part where it’s android only as of now. Hoping it comes to iOS because I’d be all over it then!
@Kimyonaakuma don't forget anti-consumer.
@WiltonRoots and greed.
Please update the article if it comes to Apple!
So installing this. I've 100%'d Sunshine just once in all the years since the original release, and those blue coins are a real slog.
"There are 240 of these pesky little things to collect, but with no real way of tracking which Coins you've grabbed from each of Sunshine's individual worlds."
This is one of the reasons why I wish Sunshine got remade instead of ported so they could have an in game checklist that let's you keep track of how many coins you still need to find...
I... don't even remember these coins..? Did I get them all? I don't know
Yup, one of Sunshine's greatest flaws. No sort of basic tracker for which episodes or chapters have all blue coins found.
All you know is that each area has 30 coins to found, and now many of them you've found. It bites for coins that are exclusive to certain chapters.
Or some that are just very cruelly hidden, like spraying an invisible object in the sky when stood on a certain platform, because it looks like you're spraying the moon.
I love the blue coins and they're probably the reason why Sunshine is my favourite - but I will admit it is a pain that some of them are locked to specific chapters.
EDIT: That image is just a recoloured yellow coin! Blue coins have stars on them!
I love SMS but never bothered trying to collect the coins.
Remember the old days when Nintendo Power made nice strategy guides for stuff like this? Sigh...
I already got them all, but this could be nice for future playthrough. Nice to see things like this coming out though, this is one of the more annoying parts of the game.
Nice, have downloaded this. I'm sure at some point I'll finally try and get them all.
On the one hand, i love marii sunshine, and on the other, i cant be bothered finishing it.
I really was hoping nintendo wouldve polished it a little before release
I still haven't continued my progress of Sunshine Switch version after i get into mural drawing zone.
I already felt this is a big mess 3D Mario game. Too hardcore for casual gamer like me.
Glad i got the game but i still prefer Ratchet & Clank PS3 games.
Pro-tip: you don't have to collect any of them
I beat Bowser in this game in Mario 3D All-Stars and I don't think I've touched the game since.
All these years later and they repeated this mistake with the regional coins so they could sell Bowser amiibos.
This sounds amazing.
Was about to download it...
... it's only available on Android for now 😢
Are we seriously at a point that we're lazy to use a gamefaqs guide?
@Tourtus The funny thing is this feature could and should have been implemented as a basic QOL feature in this port.
Luckily, some person uploaded a screenshot for each blue coin so I could make my own guide with powerpoint back then. I even bought an inoffical "guide" from ebay that simply copied a list from some cheat site (he had to give us a refund of course!)
Back then you wouldn‘t have thousands of guides on Youtube. And even if there was one it would have probably taken forever and a day to load.
Those were the days
Wait, hang on, the coins are sorted by level?
Hell, I'm in!
I had to dig out my old Prima Strategy Guide from the garage for the Sunshine replay on All Stars.
Compared to Mario games innovating and being brilliant it always feels like Mario Sunshine is trying to iterate on the Rare N64 Platformers. Sunshine feels more like DK64 or Banjo Kazooie than an actual Mario game. Hence this blue coin shenanigans.
Looks like the app could be made by the same people who did these monster hunter apps that is a guide also. But l don't really think it could be though.
@Rob3008 Maybe, they did edit voice lines and other things when porting it.
I remember being annoyed there wasn't any sort of blue coin count per world, but when I played Mario Sunshine two years ago I found that at least buried in the menus under the guide maps. So if you have a previous save file, you can at least see which worlds you have completed and use the checklist for any worlds where you didn't collect them all: https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitch/comments/j69ctl/mario_sunshine_shows_how_many_blue_coins_you_have/
