The Zelda cartoon series has its fair share of critics, but like so many shows from the period, there are almost as many fans who will fight tooth and nail to prevent anyone saying anything even remotely negative about it. If you fall into the latter camp, then you'll no doubt be interested to learn that Rob Forward (not his sister Eve, as was originally reported, although she also worked on the show as well) – one of the screenwriters of the show – has spoken about working on the series.
Speaking to @kzinssiebroiler on Twitter, Eve re-shared some comments made by her brother Rob on the topic of the show, and how DIC – the company behind the series – was focused on the Super Mario Brothers Super Show, which gave the Zelda team a lot more leeway when it came to scripts and character design.
With a relatively slim 'show bible' to use, Forward and the other writers were given plenty of scope to develop the series as they saw fit, and this led to the creation of the fairy character, Sprite – which, amusingly, was spawned from Forward's childhood obsession with Tinkerbell's bottom in the Disney movie Peter Pan. Ahem.
Forward also reveals that the now-iconic "Excuse me, Princess" line which Link uses throughout the series was pretty much forced upon him by Robbie London, DIC's VP of Creative Affairs. The gag was based on a Steve Martin routine that was popular at the time, and Forward was so dismissive of the line that he decided to poke fun at London by including it in every episode – which ironically led to it being one of the most popular and most-quoted elements of the series.
While we're on the topic of the show, have you checked out this amazing Zelda x Beavis and Butt-Head mash-up yet?

This and Captain N always entertained while our family had Sky back in the 90's briefly.
"Well excuuUUse me princess!"
deeply enjoyed this as a kid and I always imagined future Zelda games to eventually achieve this art style.
when the gameboy game came out - then the N64 one - I thought "well - they aren't going for what I thought they were going for"
@Snatcher There‘s a reason why they made him silent in the games after all.
I assume you guys checked this for authenticity... because I was pretty thrown by the use of modern phrases like "obvz" and the questionable nature of the content.
I mean... you guys did check it right?
@Scapetti ...because people in their 40s aren't allowed to use modern phrases?
The bit about Tinkerbell and 'excuuuuuuse me, princess' was part of the quote from Eve Forward's brother, not Eve herself.
Sounds like you’re attributing things to Eve that were actually said by her brother. The bulk of this info, as I read the tweets, are quotes from her brother from a previous interview. ie Eve didnt put the ‘excuse me’ line in every episode, her brother did. And her brother had a thing for Tinkerbell, not Eve.
@Damo just a question... did you? It's not exactly a big twitter profile. Looked pretty fake to me. Not saying it is. Just saying it looks it
@TheRealKyleHyde @Brumblescope Yeah... pretty lazy journalism. I kinda wonder how they even grabbed this scoop haha
There's also the issue of this being classified as "news" when it should DEFINITELY be labelled as "random". Or you know... just plain deleted until it is verified? Lazy journalism, do better
@TheRealKyleHyde Yeah, in fact a majority of the content was quoted from him. Also, I'd say Eve kind of contradicts her brother on the bit about "Excuse me, Princess," which is fine since people may remember things differently (this is why eye witnesses really aren't that reliable! Lol), but it means the writer of this article probably shouldn't have quoted either one since it's hard to know what the reality of the situation was.
Well EXCUUUUUSE me, NintendoLife!
@FiveDigitLP Yep, I can see the error I've made there - Eve was quoting what her brother had told her. I've updated the piece to reflect this.
I love the Zelda cartoon. It has good action, I love that they used sounds from the game, and yes I enjoy the humor. Looks good too.
Rob Forward’s fantasies about Tinkerbell...!
I just finished watching the series last weekend. Is it dumb and campy? Yes. Is it also fun? Most of the time, yes.
Ganon is the best character and the "evil jar" is my favorite thing about the show.
"Looking good, princess! Especially from this angle!" - Link, looking down Zelda's robe in a children's cartoon.
Different times, man...
Aa a side note, I thought it ironic that Sprite's existence loosely reminds me of Navi years later--Coincidence or inspiration?
Channel 4 had all the cartoons from DIC including SMB 3. I watched that, and Zelda at the time. I liked them but probably haven’t aged well.
This series was absolute cat vomit. I mean, I watched it, I bought the DVD's, I downloaded the episodes, and I watch a few maybe once every 4 years for nostalgia's sake, but god! is it terrible. And it suffers from that whole 80s/90s christian PTA garbage of not letting the cartoon characters use their weapons in a fight. Link's always shooting beams out of his sword, even after he gets hit!
That Legend Of Beavis was the funniest s*** I‘ve seen in a while, thank you for that!!
Still have the complete series on DVD. One of my favorite cartoons when I was as a kid.
Every 90s cartoon character was just Michelangelo from the ninja turtles
