Marketing for the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie has been exceptionally strong, with Paramount leaning heavily on iconic imagery and nostalgia.
The latest poster goes above and beyond, tapping into those nostalgic feels like nothing else we've seen up till now, especially for anyone who was around for the launch of the original Genesis sequel which famously launched on 'Sonic 2sday' — Tuesday 24th November 1992.
It's a direct callback to the US and PAL box arts for the original Sonic the Hedgehog 2 game for Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. It features Sonic and Tails prominently at the front, with a gigantic image of Dr. Robotnik grasping at a number 2, with an extra finger courtesy of Jim Carrey, of course. Eagle-eyed viewers can also spot Knuckles reflected in the big red 2, too.
We love it — there's nothing more to say! You can check out the poster in question below, alongside the US box art for Sonic the Hedgehog 2:
That's not the last of the Sonic 2 news for today; a brand new trailer for the movie just dropped and looks absolutely fantastic. For fun, we also ran a 'Box Art Brawl' poll a while back to determine the best box art for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for Genesis/Mega Drive — feel free to check it out and cast your belated vote!

You are now noticing Knuckles' face reflected in the 2.
It's amazing how Jim looks!
God, the way they're going all out on this, you'd swear there was a hardcore fan behind it all. I love it! The first movie was great and I'm definitely hyped for the sequel.
Gotta say I’ve been pretty impressed with what I’ve seen of this movie so far. I thought the first one sucked, and this is closer to what I would want as a fan of the original games
There's something about the movie poster that looks... generic. I don't know what movie or game it was from, but that pose between Sonic and Tails has been done before...
I like how Paramount did a complete 180, actually listened to people and show some love for the source material meanwhile it’s always business as usual with Sega/Sonic Team where them ignoring Mania’s success, sending Sonic Team Racing out to die with no post launch support and releasing the clearly unfinished Colors Ultimate are utterly depressingly predictable.
"2 Fast, 2 Furious"
Missed opportunity on putting "2 Furryous" 😂
I was hoping they would do a poster based on the Sonic 2 box art. Glad they finally did it!
I would like to point out the tagline "Welcome to the Next Level". This is the same phase that Sega of America used to promote it's products from 1992 to 1995. (Genesis, Sega CD, 32X, Game Gear, Nomad, etc.) Very nice.
I was on board with "pre-quill" but I just can't say the same for "2sday".
I might give this movie a go. The original wasn't... great. Mostly inoffensive. But like Sonic 2 (the game) was way better than Sonic 1, I have hopes the sequel film is way better.
@NatiaAdamo
Yeah they had this hilarious commercial for the Sega CD that had some rapper in it. At the end some techno-punk letters would spell out “Welcome to the Next Level”
@Browny let's face it, 'inoffensive' is high praise for a film based on a video game.
Love, love, love!!!
Why Tails showing the bum?
Awesome! That’s how you nail it!
Take note Disney!
@BeefSanta its a reference to the original release of sonic 2, as it released on a tuesday and all the promotions called it 2seday.
I'm in love. Times 2
@nowthisisepic I don't see why being a reference makes it any less weak. Seems like today is excuseday (and that's how it's done, thank you, try the veal, tip your waitress)
This is, to quote Sonic, "way past cool!"
The Sonic movie had no right to be as good as it was. video games movies are expected to be just awful and 99% of them have been. So why was Sonic 1 was just so amazing and Sonic 2 trailer look so incredible.
WHAT WITCHCRAFT IS THIS!!!!!
why is robotnik hiding behind a ham?
Oh my god! they actually did it, I was hoping they would. I'm so happy a video game movie is getting this much dedication put into it, I feel like other video game movies just don't, have that heart put into it like this does.
Lets hope we can say the same for the mario movie.
@Browny Thats a good way to look at it.
As some people said, the first movie had to walk, for the 2nd to run.
@Snatcher Where's your avatar from? Reminds me of skull girls.
@somebodyelse It is skull girls actually, I edited fillia to have that snatcher flair.
@Snatcher So you gave her a costume mod? She looks like a ninja
@somebodyelse yep, it’s not in the actually game sadly, but I took some fan art I liked and used it. The color pallet is based off of snatcher from a hat in time.
And I to think she looks like a ninja, happy you like it.
@BeefSanta fair, but to people that were around back during the sonic 2 hype, this is probably very nostalgic. I really dont care either way tho tbh
@Snatcher i was actually gonna ask you where your profile pic was from yesterday, just forgot to lol
@nowthisisepic glad I could provide a answer. I think the reason people ask is because they know it’s from skullgirls, but because I edited it, it makes it harder to tell lol.
Well, fillia got snatcherfied.
Nice homage to StH2 boxart. Nostalgia time
Poster looks great. Gonna give the film itself a miss
This poster made me smile, a lot. Lived and breathed Sonic 2 and its respective sequels on the Mega Drive
@BeefSanta youre a ***** genius i cant even saboteur that comeback
@nowthisisepic don't worry, my friend, if it's any consolation, there's nobody who dislikes me more than me
