Random: Some Square Enix Staff Really Want A Final Fantasy VI Remake

Just remake the old Final Fantasy 1, 2, 5, 6 into 3D style like FF 3 & 4 NDS / Atelier Marie Remake with Chibi style and voice acting.
No need to be Ultra OMG HD Realistic graphics.

VI is certainly my favourite FF and the HD-2D segment in the Pixel Remaster felt like a taste of what they want to do.
Though given what's said here seems more like they're thinking of something more like going beyond what they did when remaking III and IV.
Guess we'll see if the inside demand at Square leads to anything.

It would absolutely be very cool to see, but yeah, also a huge undertaking. And looking at how much work FFVIIR is taking I'm not sure it would work out. Granted the VII remake isn't exactly a traditional "remake" and I'd expect a VI remake to be more faithful.

I would never complain about a 6 remake. I hope they also decide to remaster the 13 trilogy for PS5 so that every mainline game excluding 11 can be on one system.

Err surely creating a brand new Final Fantasy game from scratch is more difficult? What an absurd thing to say.

Final Fantasy 16 is difficult. Final Fantasy 6 would be a breeze by comparison. You have a lot of the early work done.

Personally I would much prefer a remake in the HD-2D style for a game like Final Fantasy 6 so at least they can retain the sprite look but add voice acting. It would be quite a large undertaking to adapt it to 3D but no more so than making a new game.

A remake of VI would be an absolute dream come true. Wouldn't care how long it takes, as I loved that game to bits.

But if we are talking about something like FF7R I'd imagine it would be very difficult, reimagining such an old game from the SNES era in modern style surely doesn't seem like an easy task, especially if they don't just straigth up want to cut parts of the original

If they're remaking 6 then Nintendo needs to be in on it and possibly secure it as an exclusive. The legacy of classic FF(especially 6) is with Nintendo and it would be a travesty if Sony got their grubby hands all over it.

Consider that when you make a game inside a 3 megabyte cartridge, you allot for space.

Now, when you have about 3 terabytes to fill...

How do you stretch it out? Will it still run on a modern console if you do that? How do you animate the monsters? How many more townspeople are you gonna need to fill the extra space? What will they say? Do you expand the story? What if it offends the longtime fans who wanted you to do a Remake in the first place?

Yeah, it's difficult.

If they gave it the 2.5 HD remake look I'd be keen but yeah would be cool to see it wildly different interpretation of the game.

Does it really need a remake? No

Do we want to have it? Yes. Just don't mess with the battle system

The Pixel Remaster is excellent. As a newcomer, I love how it’s been zhuzhed up in certain respects but ultimately leaves the core untouched, allowing me to appreciate the game in the context of its time. Much like Earthbound in my opinion, the je ne sais quois of FF6 is wholly intact as a SNES game. You can see the vision, the achievement and the legacy unfolding before your eyes as you play. I don’t think that’s something you can easily recapture, hence why FF7 Remake wisely became a new thing unto itself.

Remakes are nice and all but the abundance of them of late gives the impression that old media by itself is insufficient. Weird for an industry that frequently makes bank on nostalgia but renders so many of the classics unplayable through official means.

VI could benefit from a remake. Not a reimagining like VII got, but just a simpler remake akin to the pixel remaster with a ton of improvements.

VI has issues, quite a few of them, that could be ironed out rather easily I feel with current day tech. I'm surprised it wasn't done for the pixel remaster, but those were designed to be true to the original as much as possible.

I'm still anxious about the rumored IX remake. IX is the best FF, and my favorite, so I'm curious to see what they do with it.

Give it and Chrono the ALBW treatment.

HD-2D would be great. Give everyone far more script to flesh out the story, quadruple the amount of cut-scenes at least, make the world absolutely huuuuuge, no overworld map except for flying, and yes, I will be happy.

That last bit will never happen though. Maybe a node style map though, that might work.

@Itachi2099 @Itachi2099 I would agree as Final Fantasy did start on Nintendo, but Sony and Square has been close since VII. Sony’s the reason VII exists. If you actually read on their relationship back then, Nintendo exerted tight control over their games. Back in the 90s, they literally had to release games with bugs or cut out multiple parts of it because Nintendo refused to let them use bigger-sized cartridges. Sony on the other hand, gave them funding on the marketing and development on VII. You can actually look up the Senior Vice President of Nintendo saying this about VII, “Most of our customers wouldn’t want or appreciate such a slow and tedious game such as Final Fantasy VII.” So, while it did start on Nintendo, Nintendo screwed up their relationship with Square.

God no. Maybe just the octopath graphics, but please dont do whatever the hell you are doing to VII. Leave VI alone.

I played the game a while ago on the SNES Mini and I felt it was a pretty fun game. It doesn't really need a remake in my opinion. But if the fans and the developers want it, let's just hope they do it justice, eh? I'm not really a big enough FF fan to know what kinds of things FF fans want from the series. But I do know that recent remakes of old Squaresoft games (Crystal Chronicles, Pixel Remasters, Chrono Cross Radical Dreamers) have had some issues that many of the fans were not happy about. (though I think the recent Crisis Core is generally considered a good remake?)

I'd guess it's about whether Nintendo's interested in a FFVI remake happening. Nintendo are the reason the Live a Live remake exists for example.

Definitely don't see Sony asking for a FFVI remake given they don't care about 2D games and Microsoft's relationship with Square Enix is practically nonexistent.

remakes or remasters are a good thing why play a old game with so outdated graphics..and features... that would be like saying you prefer black & white tv to color...

FF6 is my favorite of the series. But I don't want a remake. If FF6 is going to be revisited, I want a sequel, though I want Terra as the lead of said sequel.

I want a 9 remake, that game is the perfect mix of old and new”well at the time”. I kinda get that vibe from final fantasy 16. It is totally in the new style but seems to touch on a high fantasy world not seen since 9 or 10.

If they do a remake it should just be a 1:1 remake this time and not like FF7R.

FFVI is the entry most deserving of a remake. The original had so much potential that was largely squandered due to bugs and janky mechanics.

Remake like Final Fantasy VII Remake? Well, I don't need something like that. I want a "complete" game, not a some "part" of the game. Heck, is there any "remakes" like FF VII Remake? Developers became so lazy and greedy that they can remake only some part of the full game? Did I missed something? Final Fantasy VII Remake is not a remake of the full game, just a part of it, right?

Remake Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger. These two games need some modern love. Just don't turn them into Kingdom Hearts clones.

@Zenszulu Besides the opera scenes? The Pixel Remaster of FFVI added that. And once I get the Physical Edition of the Collection from Play-Asia, this week, I'll play it.

There is a fan base out there telling them that going the Octopath route or even the Final Fantasy 15 Pocket route is enough. They even have most of the main character assets designed already from their work on Opera Omnia. The fan base would take a 1:1 remake with updated assets - not everything has to be a modern wizbang. If they can do Live A Live, they can do their best game in their best series.

As much as the idea intrigues me…I’m so worried they would ruin it. Or, probably more realistically, not make it the way I want it done. The series is evolving constantly, but I much prefer the ‘90s style for these games.

Pixel Remaster is great — just fix frame pacing (there’s a stutter when scrolling because of pixel movement vs frame updates don’t sync). Maybe add a NG+ option. It doesn’t need anything.

@nocdaes I can 1up your thought - why should 16 be difficult? SE is supposedly in the video game making business. Why is making a video game, their only flagship title left besides dragon quest, so hard for them?

I assume SE trying to make a new phone would be difficult. They don't do that. In much the same way professional basketball would be difficult for me. Writing a cheap story about palace intrigue and magic crystals, putting in some hackneyed introspective piano when someone loses their sword of the chosen one and slapping some NFTs in the code should be easy for SE. Updating graphics on a story already written should be mailed in. It will be - that's all SE does - remakes.

@-wc- Yes, because you have to recontextualize all those playable characters (which are a total of 14 btw). Also the way the story was told was completely different then, story telling was just completely different back then. I mean just compare the original FF7 to FF7R (and that is only the first 7h of the original recreated), how much stuff they had to adjust to work in a modern environment

No. Game is perfect. Enough with the remakes. I doubt the remake would even attempt to capture the whole operatic essence that is FFVI.

Open to the idea just so long as they don't completely reimagine VI as a modern-day Final Fantasy; I can't take another Kingdom Hearts game wearing a gritty FF skin.

If it's another action slasher then no thanks. Why not keep innovating on turn based strategy or active turn based? Why does everything have to button mash action nowadays from Square.

@PLATINUM7 I would be perfectly satisfied with an HD2D update to the graphics and all of the extra content from VI Advance. Maybe add some updated cutscenes from Anthology. The game doesn't need the VIIR treatment. Why does Square overcomplicate everything?

It will never measure up to the original, honestly. There's no reason beyond the recent pixel remaster.

@Olliemar28 I'm meaning a breeze versus making a new game from scratch. All of the challenges of making a game still exist of course... but they are all less of a challenge than an entirely new game.

Final Fantasy 6 remake would have fan expectations like you say... but so does Final Fantasy 16! I'd argue more so since we know less about it!

Final Fantasy 6 remake is far, far lower risk than Final Fantasy 16 financially too. Look at FF7 remake as evidence of that!

It doesn't need to be a huge re-imagined 3D realistic remake like FF7 is getting though. It can still be a top-down game using 3D characters. It should have happened years ago when they gave us a 3D version of III and IV on the DS. For some reason they didn't go to V or VI on 3DS. It only needs to be just as those were but with modern polished graphics. So I don't know how exactly it is difficult. They wouldn't need to stretch it out over 3 or 4 releases like FF7 Remake.

FFVI doesn't need a remake but I'd love to see it. I used to hope for a DS remake like FFIII and FFIV got, but now I'm not sure. Honestly I think I'd prefer something 3D than the HD2D Octopath style. I'd also like to see the characters in their Amano designs.

From what I've read the reason why it's difficult to remake 7 is the the original game got away with having so many locations because of their prerendered back grounds, so creating HD 3D environments instead is a tall order. Maybe same here.

I just like turn-based/ATB games, and I'd personally want a 6 remake to stay turn-based. And I just don't see that happening if it went full AAA blockbuster 3D; these days, it feels like Square Enix only does turn-based for the somewhat smaller titles, your Bravely Defaults and all the HD‐2D games. The HD-2D games owe a lot of their aesthetic to FF6 anyway, seems like a nice natural fit! (As the Pixel Remaster proved with the opera scene already!)

So that's what I'd want most. But I couldn't complain too much if it got the full treatment newer players would probably like more.

If they remake 6 it will be like the 7 remakes but worse. I could see them milking that for like 6 releases, the combat will suck, you'll need whatever the most up to date gen system to play it, they will rework characters to not be offensive and in so doing will ruin them or at least completely alter the story, and it will suck...just like the 7 remakes.

I would pay $20-30 for an HD-2D remake without even thinking about it. I'd have a lot of reservations about going full rebirth though. The remake of 7 was a different game even if the story was mostly similar. One huge thing for me will be the music. Kefka's Domain was the first game music I ever bought. I've listened to that so, so, so many times. It's as iconic as the game itself. I'm open to some kind of enhancement, but they really have to be respectful of the original.

I'd much rather they kept their mitts off of the pre-ps2 era games, thanks. Don't trust them at all.

Well, maybe FFVIII. I'm not real fond of the original game as-is, and it's got so many early signs of the change to modern blood that FFX continued that it might work.

I would be fine if the remake was on the scope of Trials of Mana.

Keep the same story, dialog, and gameplay. But with a modern 2D look like Octopath Traveler? Yes please.

FF6 remade into a style that matches FF7 Remake would add a new wrinkle to the debate about which one is better lol. I say go for it.

Obviously at the same meeting, others said a Chrono Trigger remaster/remake, a Dragon Quest "Pixel remaster" style collection, a Secret of Mana remaster port to Switch with a few adjustments...

I want a full FF9 Remake, ala the fan project. I love the medieval fantasy setting.

I've never played it so it's harder to tell just by glancing at a random screenshot, but I believe FF6 is more steampunk-ish? I'm not as enthusiastic about that aesthetic.

Damnit, if they did a VI remake in the style of the VII remake, I'd have to buy whatever system it comes out on (likely not Nintendo). I can't afford all that lol.

I love 2D-HD but there wouldn't be much of a point I don't think. The original is fine and the pixel remasters are fine too.

You know it's kind of sad when the culture has been this conditioned to be excited for remakes and remasters, even though/while they tell you that the New games are really where it's at.

Especially when you consider that the remakes and remasters are never better than the originals.

@Zimon FF1 got a "3D" remake already. It was released exclusively on the Japanese 3DS eShop.

Also, remember how apparently 16-bit sprite Celes getting punched in the face was too extreme for CERO on the GBA release?

I really like the Style of the FF3 and 4 Remake.
They have also some PSX vibe to them on the 3DS.
But i think that Train is out and away, i think we'll see a Remake in the Style of Final Fantasy VII after that is done.

@Crono1973 I am. 2dHD was a cute novelty that expired quickly. The background blur and motion blur are kinda nausea inducing. I couldn't play triangle strategy until I turned off all of the 2dhd effects.

I was never part of the crowd that thought everything should be remade in this style because that's a disservice to art. For instance chrono trigger has the best pixel artwork ever. Why would you remake that into this 2DHD crap? So it just looks like everything else and loses its identity on the way?
I'm just not a fan of that homogenized look and every 2dhd game looks exactly the same.

I think it worked great for Octopath traveler as the art style for that game but trying to turn every other snes remake into that style is uninspired. I'm not a big fan of remakes anyway but it's a little out of hand now especially when you have entire fanbases saying "just redo your entire catalogue to look this way!"

@KingMike That's because Square Enix insisted on getting an A rating for the GBA version. I expect (and hope!) that they'd be okay with a hypothetical 3D remake of VI being rated C (15+), as VII Remake was.

Because yeah, VI had some heavy stuff, and those low-res graphics were the only thing keeping it in kid-friendly territory!

So I am mixed... for VI I just want modern graphics. I didn't mind them whatif-ing VII because I don't like VII anyway. But if they did that to VI I would be hurt.

Please no. FFVI is a masterpiece as it is. But if you take that corny dialogue and put it in elaborate cut scenes with full voice acting, all the charm will be lost. The joy of it is in the simplicity.
