It's easy to forget that there are still new games being made for Nintendo's classic handhelds today, with developers pushing the platforms to their limits and publishers getting on board with some sweet physical releases.
Bitmap Soft is one of these very publishers (you might remember its two Game Boy releases from back in April) and it has now opened up pre-orders on a brand new ARPG for the Game Boy Color, Far After.
This comes from indie developer SuitNtie and follows the adventures of two friends who discover that they have been born with magical abilities. Far After sees the pair navigating the dark forest, coming face-to-face with nasty creatures and learning powerful spells along the way.

As the above tweet notes, the game will come in a standard edition soon, but pre-orders on the beefy Limited Collector's Edition are now open. This premium package comes with a huge number of bonus goodies — including a collector's coin, an art book, a special slipcase, a poster and more — though it is on the pricier end of things as it is currently listed at £140.
You can find all of the details on the game and place your pre-order on the official Bitmap Soft site. Based on previous releases from the publishers, we would expect the standard edition to be priced around £45 when pre-orders open for that one soon.

This and the McDonald's game are making me feel like a kid again. I'll stick every modern-retro game onto my 3DS that I can get my hands on.
$69.99 sounds about right.
Bitmapsoft is likely a litmus test of what may happen once the industry tries going fully digital. We will likely see many indies pull some retro releases before the industry turns around and runs a similar parallel to what is going on now.
Really wish they’d show some more actual gameplay footage, or some footage not covered up by large promotional text.
I’m interested but I know little to nothing about how this actually plays.

I feel like we get a new Gameboy game every 2 weeks or so these days. I wish these retro titles would come to modern consoles as well. Seems like these games are more concerned with being realistically retro than expanding their audience of potential buyers.
@somnambulance I think Moon Escape 2021 was recently ported to switch, maybe others. I personally like playing gb games on the GB/Analogue devices much more than on switch, so they have a customer in me, but I see what you're saying

I like that Evercade bundled some of these together on their Indie 1 and Indie 2 releases (e.g. Deadeus and Quest Arrest). Much more affordable way of trying them out whilst also supporting them. Hopefully games like this will hit the platform too.

@somnambulance I think retro-styled games are much more interesting when they actually work on old consoles, but I agree that this isn't the most accessible way to do things.
I do still have a few GBCs kicking around, but I'd just end up loading the ROM into an emulator so I could play with a comfortable screen and controller, anyway. And with as many new titles (plus re-releases of older ones!) are coming to old systems now, I'd go broke if I tried to snap up all of the games that look interesting!
I liked how Micro Mages on NES had both the physical collector's editions, plus a very affordable ROM download as an option.

@smoreon See, that’s what I’m saying. It’s great that devs make authentically retro titles. I appreciate that, but I’d also prefer playing a retro title on practically any modern platform instead. And I’m the kind of person that would buy these types of games and play them start to finish. Shoot. I’d even write them a personal review for fun. However, these super expensive GBC titles seem designed to bottleneck their own commercial interests for such a niche group of collectors. It’s such an odd business strategy to me. It’s almost like the games are meant to stay in the box instead of played.
...so why does most of the article insist this is Game Boy "Color" specifically? The advertising doesn't really mention that, and the very sparse gameplay we see is just shades of Game Boy green, so where's that even coming from?
