Is the third time the charm for the Super Mario Land series?
While Nintendo kept things fairly standard with their first two Super Mario Land releases, they obviously decided to make some changes when they got ready to create this third release in the series for their Game Boy system. Instead of featuring Mario, they decided to give players a chance to be the bad guy for a change and take on the role of Nintendo's newest bad boy Wario. While the game still features the same mix of platforming and action elements players have come to expect from the series, the play control system was totally revamped and gave the game its own unique look and feel. The end result is what has become a hugely popular series for Nintendo's various portable game systems, and easily one of the most playable and enjoyable platformers ever created for the original Game Boy system.
Wario, still reeling from his defeat at the end of Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, now wants a castle more than ever and will stop at nothing in order to get it. Upon hearing that a ragtag group of pirates has stolen Mario's Princess Peach statue and taken it to their hideout on Kitchen Island, Wario hops aboard his ship and sets out for the island. While Captain Syrup and the Brown Sugar Pirates sounds more like a 70's lounge act than a group of video game antagonists, that's exactly who Wario will have to go up against if he wants to get back the stolen statue in order to cash it in and finally buy a castle of his own.
Although this is a Super Mario Land game, you certainly wouldn't know it from playing it. When Nintendo decided to feature Wario as the main character in the game, they also gave him his own unique set of gameplay moves as well, making the feel of the game itself completely different from the previous two Super Mario Land releases. While Wario still has the basic moveset of running, jumping, and stomping on enemies, he also has an entirely new set of abilities that depend on which hat he's currently wearing. While the standard Wario can do a charge attack at enemies, he can add to his arsenal by picking up the various types of pots that are hidden in blocks around each level.
There are basically three types of pots in the game for Wario to make use of. The Bull Pot allows Wario to wear a bullhorn hat that not only increases the length and power of his charge attack, but also allows him to pound the ground and stick to certain ceilings using his horns. The Jet Pot will bestow a jet pack hat onto Wario's head and allow him to fly through the air for short periods of time, something that comes in quite handy for traversing some of the wider chasms in the game. Finally there is the Dragon Pot, which will put a dragon's head on top of Wario's head to spit fire for a short period of time. This is probably the most useful of the hats, as it can make taking out enemies much easier, especially in tight spaces where a charge move might be difficult to execute.
There are eight different areas on Kitchen Island, each of which contain five levels. At the end of the fifth level, you'll have to square off against a boss in order to progress to the next area; some levels even feature a Skeleton Door that you can unlock with a hidden key and score some serious treasures. Of course, that's if you can locate them. There are even a few levels that feature two exits that you'll have to hunt for if you want to experience the optional Sherbet Land bonus area.
Given the fact that this is the third release in the series, you'd expect a certain degree of visual advancement, but the developers at Nintendo really outdid themselves with the graphical presentation in Wario Land. Not only does the game feature some of the absolute best graphics seen in a Game Boy release, but there's honestly not a bad-looking level in the entire bunch. The backgrounds themselves show a wealth of detail and the characters and enemies that inhabit them are equally impressive. As big a step up in graphics quality as Super Mario Land 2 was from the original, so too is the advance in this third release. It's also nice to see that very few areas use the same visual style, so you can expect an abundance of variety between the various areas throughout the game. This game is a perfect example of what could be accomplished visually with the Game Boy system when in the proper hands.
The soundtrack in Super Mario Land 2 was impressive, but once again Nintendo was able to do the unthinkable and outperform it with their musical score for Wario Land. While it's obviously a very different style from the previous two releases, it's certainly no less catchy and shows off the diversity of the system's unique sound capabilities. While some tracks are obviously better than others, many of the game's best tracks tend to be the ones that are used most often, so you'll have plenty of opportunities to hear them throughout the game. Even the sound effects are extremely well done and seem to complement the game's soundtrack to perfection. Very seldom do you see an audio/visual presentation so in tune with each other and executed so well together.
The revamped gameplay in Wario Land is a welcome twist on the tried-and-true Mario Land style found in the first two releases and gives the game a unique feel all its own. The control itself might take a little getting used to, given how different it can be, but once you get a handle on controlling Wario you'll truly appreciate what Nintendo was able to do with the game, and realize how original the overall experience is. Even the boss fights this time around show a lot more imagination and variety in their design. Nintendo also managed to up the difficulty level a bit from the original two Super Mario Land releases, which should please fans of the series who felt a bit let down by the lack of challenge in the originals. While the Wario Land games might have become a bit more diverse as the series progressed, there's still something special about this first release that will keep you coming back for more.

Wow 10, this is nice!!! I started off with Wario Land II as a launch title for the Game boy color, and got the third when it was released. I played Wario land III so much that the sticker rubbed off, and finally the battery failed. To me, III was the pinnacle of Wario Land games, but I've never played Mario Land II or Wario Land (SML3). Unfortunately, I passed up Mario Land II for Mario Land I (I wanted to play/buy the games in order), and when I later came to EB Games looking for the others, they were gone

There was more to this game than the obvious...I remember stumbling across debug mode for one!
Just don't let the batteries on your Game Boy run completely flat while playing it, or all your save data will be completely wiped
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

Though I don't agree with the 10, a 9 would be doing more justice, I still cannot disagree that Wario Land is the best platformer on the GB even outdoing the already fantastic package of Super Mario Land 2.

While I personally wouldn't give the game a perfect score, I can understand why one may reward it with a ten. To me, the game deserves a solid nine; nothing more, nothing less.

It came down to this. Wario Land is #2 on my list of Top 3 Game Boy games of all time. So if #1 is a ten and #3 Tetris is a ten, I had to give this one a ten also.
(Actually #1 should be an 11 if you want the truth)

@Corbie: What's number 1
If it's not Pokemon, SML series, or Tetris, what can it be?
Well, according to my agreement in which I must purchase anything from NLife that gets a 10, regardless of genre, guess I'm going to eBay. I've always wanted this anyway.

Easily the greatest portable platformer of all time, and the start of a wonderfully bizarre series that finally showed a different way of approaching platforming outside the Mario formula. One of the reasons a game like NSMB disappointed me so much is that the first Wario Land, all those years ago, had exponentially more inventiveness and variety.

Corbie, your number one game better be Dragon Warrior III !

I wouldn't give it a 10 (a 9 morelike), but I agree that this is probably the best Game Boy platformer of all time. Now I wish I still had my copy.
@Corbie. C'mon, what's your #1? Probably an uber-obscure game no one knows about, I'm sure.

Another great review Corbie (and Nintendo Life). I've really been enjoy these classic Gameboy reviews. They've prompted me to buy a Gameboy off of eBay or Amazon (haven't done it yet) and play through a bunch of these classic games that I missed.
And I'll venture a guess to say Link's Awakening is Corbie's favorite GB game (though I definitely could be wrong). I just hope you review said game, along with Pokemon Red/Blue in the rest of these 20 GB reviews.

@ Digiki - We're not covering Game Boy Color games for this special, only the black & white releases. So this mystery game is not Dragon Warrior III, although I do love it. I think it should be obvious what the #1 game is.

Gameboy is such a great system. I am enjoying these classic reviews. Good job Nintendo Life team. I check this retro site more often since IGN pretty much never updates their retro site anymore.
When are you going to review Mortal Kombat for the Gameboy? (I'm kidding of course)

Even though I liked SML2 more than this, Wario Land was absolutely great! Trying to get as much money as you could and find all those secret treasures was a stunning challenge. I'd give it a 9, however, just because it felt like something far from the standards I used to find in Mario's platformers (which is not a flaw, it's just my tastes). Anyway, can't wait for the #1 review (especially if the game is Link's Awakening, which I still miss!
).

" Nintendo also managed to up the difficulty level a bit from the original two Super Mario Land releases"?
Wuh? This one is by far the easiest game in the SML series. The challenge was lowered considerably between each game (though yeah, none of them are overly hard).
And yeah, the jet hat is the best.
