It's Monday morning, European Nintendo gamers, which means happy download news to bring smiles to our faces. This week is dominated by a game where you collect creatures and explore a vast land, which has had a teensy bit of hype in recent months. There are also a couple of retro goodies on the Wii U Virtual Console, alongside a lot of discounts, so let's get right to it.
Wii U Virtual Console
GOLF (Nintendo, €4.99 / £3.49) — Oddly, this original golf title from the NES doesn't appear to have been released on the Wii Virtual Console, so it makes its — much anticipated? — return on the Wii U Virtual Console. It has two player options and delivers what the title promises: it's golf. We'll hit the Links while wearing some tartan trousers and let you know what we think. This is the US version of the game.
Tennis (Nintendo, €4.99 / £3.49) — This is a title that did arrive on the Wii Virtual Console, and like its golfing brethren serves up a simple, uncomplicated 8-bit version of the sport; we'll hit the courts once again, while you can check out our original Wii Virtual Console Tennis review. This is the US version of the game.
Wii U eShop Temporary Discount
Little Inferno (Tomorrow Corporation, €4.99 / £4.49 until 10th November, normally €9.99 / £8.99)
3DS Retail Downloads
Pokémon X & Y (Nintendo, €44.99 / £39.99) — It finally arrives on 12th October, a title about gathering creatures and exploring a vast land that's been accumulating a lot of hype in recent months. A new generation in one of the game industry's most popular franchises, gamers will first have to choose whether to pick up X or Y — or both, potentially — before the serious business begins of picking starters (new and first-gen) for the journey. We imagine many will be very tempted by these titles, and we feel that the new features and ideas, alongside established norms for the series, make it a must have for fans and newcomers. Check out our Pokémon X & Y review for the full lowdown.
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked (Ghostlight, €34.99 / £29.99) — Released at physical retail in Europe earlier in the year, this title's arrival on the 3DS eShop may make it more immediately accessible and tempting to more gamers. It deserves the attention, too, as our recommendation in our Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked review makes clear.
Hot Wheels World's Best Driver (WB Games, €29.99 / £24.99)
3DS eShop Temporary Discounts
Dress to Play: Magic Bubbles (EnjoyUp Games, €1.99 / £1.79 until 10th November, normally €3.99 / £3.59)
3D Game Collection (Joindots, €2.00 / £2.00 until 25th October, normally €24.99 / £11.99)
3D Mahjongg (Joindots, €2.00 / £2.00 until 25th October, normally €4.99 / £4.49)
Gardenscapes (Joindots, €2.00 / £2.00 until 25th October, normally €29.99 / £14.99)
Murder on the Titanic (Joindots, €2.00 / £2.00 until 25th October, normally €29.99 / £14.99)
3DS eShop Permanent Discount
Block Factory (Enjoy Gaming, €2.79 / £2.49, was €3.99 / £3.59)
Viking Invasion 2: Tower Defense (Big Ben, €6.99 / £6.29, was €7.99 / £6.99)
That's all, Europe. There are two obvious stand-out releases, and plenty of discounts to consider. Let us know what you plan to download in the poll and comments below.

I want to download Pokemon X, but I also want to buy it physically... Hmmm.
No downloads for me. Gonna buy Pokémon X in physical form
The complete apathy for Wii U is getting comical
Getting a download of Y and a physical of X. Wish they'd hurry up with the WiiU VC of A Link to the past (which they teased in the VC trailer at the start of the year). Would be nice to run through that again (on the big screen) before A Link between Worlds comes out.
Which is exactly why they'll wait until after Link Between Worlds. I think a GameBoy Player or SNES is our best bet at this point.
I've still got a GBA SP and a copy of it so I can wait. Just looking forward to getting to play it on a TV again.
Crappy week, though I guess they're not going to put out anything big when Pokemon's coming out. Oh yea and POKEMON WOOOOOOOOO!
Getting Pokemon retail so no d/l this week. Still plating WW and E04 so I'm not sure I'll play it right away.
Wii U is looking bad on the eshop front, we need some indies and (good) vc releases to start filtering through.
Them temporary discounts are insane! Pity tgey are all poor to average titles though...
Oh come on this is getting ridiculous now. 3DS hasn't had a decent week since August.
Virtual console on Wii U still disapoints me a bit. So far i liked super metroid, mario world and megaman x but most titles are pretty boring to me. I hope they will start bringing more games out on a weekly basis and ofc n64 and gc titles
Golf and Tennis. Really.
I suppose I'll just buy Final Fight.
Well Pokemon X & I'm going with digital cuz I see myself playin this A LOT & wanna have it rdy & not worry about the cartridge. Aaaaand I'm kinda tempted for 3D Game Collection for just $2, also maybe even that gardenscape one for a change of pace for $2 haaaa
@SirMime Ive been thinking the exact same thing and I dont wana buy it for wii vc only to have to buy it again when it does come to wiiu. Discount or not I still refuse to buy a game twice
I want A Link to the Past to come. I've never played it, and I'd rather get it on Wii U than have to go into Wii mode to play it.
I'm almost afraid to buy Pokemon. You know they'll be some kinda "play with friends and download free" (or something) code in a month or so!
Wowzers! For those amazingly cheap prices I might give 3D Mahjongg & Gardenscapes a go. I'll get Pokemon X & Y eventually.
Giving up on the VC for the Wii U and 3DS, starting to realise they are just old donkey games that are over prices being dripped out like they are god's gift. Love'm, better newer games coming out each week on all systems.
Time to move on from NES Ninty...
Watch the profanity please — TBD
Oops, sorry about that, got a little annoyed.
Pokemon X at retail for me.
There aren't words to describe my sadness at the state of the VC on both the 3DS and the Wii U.
The 3ds VC is quite allright in my opinion with most classic mario, zelda and metroid games for example. But how many people are waiting to play a golf or tennis game that is 25 years old on the wii u. I think n64 and gc games might benefit the sales of the wii u overall. (altho i guess they have a reason for not releasing those yet?)
If anyone is buying digitally, GAME has download codes for X and Y for £34.99 and you get Pokedex 3D Pro free.
At £2 a go, I think I might give those mediocre games a try. Can't hurt can it.
AWFUL week. Not bothered for Pokemon on launch day. If I've spare money after sonic, batman, battlefield 4 and call of duty ghosts, then maybe
These Wii U VC releases are appalling. Nearly a whole year it's been out and the current library is abysmal, there should at least be more than just sodding NES and SNES by now
Already used the five system transfers offered by the 3DS. Better make my copy of X a cartridge.
45€ for Pokemon? Way too expensive.
And the state of both VCs is just terrible. Are we going to be stuck with NES games forever?
WHY (pun not intended) did you put X and Y as SEPARATE OPTIONS?!?
I-I mean, I still can't decide which one I'll pick!
Have Ninty given a reason for not having N64 and GCN games on the VC yet?
I'm guessing they are not being put on the VC just yet is because the interest for Wii U is just not there at the moment, maybe next year they will start to roll out N64 games (which I have zero interest in) and then maybe in 2 years time GCN games will start to be released on teh VC BUT I have a feeling that if WWHD sells well in the west they may start to HD all the GCN backlog, which I dont have a problem with tbh, but €60 for WWHD was a bit of a rip BUT again, I'm enjoying it the second time round in teh fancy grafics must say.
But yeah, just one/two unknown (prob no one wants to play/pay €5 for) NES SNES GB/C games a week in this day and age is rediclous. Release 10 a week as there is 1000's of these games, the emulation cant be THAT hard to do what with the Wii already having emulation for all these games on the VC its just simply porting them to the WiiU for the gamepad.
I cant be the only one really disapointed can I? Why dont Ninty see or hear this complaint since 2007. In my eyes all the NES SNES N64 games should have been up on the WiiU VC from this summer and from then adding new old games.
Ugh, rant over.
@steveex
Thanks for the heads up, you just saved me a fair bit of cash there. I was just gonna get the eShop version.
Nothing for me guess I'll have to play Wind Waker all week
The only VC snes game I want is super mario kart! And when are we going to get some n64 games? I bought my wii u on day one, can't believe I'm still waiting nearly a year later for n64 games.
Nothing for me last week, nothing for me this week and probably nothing for me next week. Oh, how sad a state of affairs both eShop's are in just now.
Pokemon X but going to buy retail for sure. Windwaker should keep me occupied till 12th easily. ^^
Hot Wheels World's Best Drive (WB Games, €29.99 / £24.99)
Is this getting a physcial 3DS release do you know? shame the Wii U/PS3/360 reviews for the game are pretty awful.
And absolutely nothing for me. Again. And I'm not interested in Pokemon...
Got my Yveltal Red 3DS XL ready...
@steveex Yup. Just put my order in with Game... I now have PokéDex 3D Pro! Joy of joys!
Come on Saturday already!
My goodness. Another dry week. Where are the Marios and Zeldas?? I mean, there are so many classic Mario titles that I've either played ages ago on a system which I most likely won't have again and wish to play them, or that I haven't played yet. They could be at least coming out with one killer VC title every two weeks, and not have to worry about running out till the end of this console generation, that's how many amazing classics there are yet to be seen -.-
Yeah, not downloading. The only game I've downloaded was Fire Emblem and that's because it was free :L Getting X and Y in physical form on Saturday.
@Goginho Last week we got Final Fight 2 and 3. I'd say those ARE "killer vc games".
Sick of the tired old boring NES/SNES crud... I want my Megadrive VC back please
@KeeperBvK That may be ..but it's not my slice of cake tbh.
I would have downloaded Pokemon X/Y (not sure what version I'm going for yet) but some retailers are selling it for $44AU and all of the major players are selling it for under $60AU. When the eShop price is $69.95AU it's hard to justify the digital version premium......
Nothing for me again this week. Good news for me really since I can hardly play on my 3DS at the moment anyway. Gotta love working.
Heh, Tennis was the second game I ever played on my NES, after Super Mario Bros. Good times. Still not enough to warrant a download, though.
I don’t have a Wii U, just a 3DS, but its getting to the point I can hardly remember the last time I downloaded something off the e-shop (still waiting for the SEGA 3D classics!). I realise I've pretty much switched to PSN for downloads. They seem to have themed sales on PSN every week or so, with decent discounts.
Those Wii U VC options are quite poor, they're ok games, but there must be more appealing choices Nintendo could make to attract people to the service, and in turn, their console (Megadrive and SNES would be a start!).
there are many games from super famicom never released here, ys 4 ys 5 secret of mana 2 fire emblem etc, nintendo should choose better games for vconsole.
Tennis and golf are useless at this point
Ok they are bringing all the nes and snes games from wii vc to wii u vc so it is logical to see also these 2 games but in this critic moment for wii u I think that golf and tennis are useless
Getting Pokemon X physical on release day, and that will keep be busy on the 3DS for at least a couple of months.
Dear Nintendo,
If you give me a unified account system for my Nintendo consoles, I will give you my money through the eshop.
Yours Sincerely,
Many 3ds discounts!
"Murder on the Titanic (Joindots, €2.00 / £2.00 until 25th October, normally €29.99 / £14.99)"
Well that's a big discount.
I'm not in EU, but you guys should get 3D Mahjongg if you're a Solitaire Mahjong fan. It's pretty good.
still no flipnote studio 3d! ughh when is it coming!?
I've been waiting for a Little Inferno price drop...
@FishieFish Yeah, that is a big discount. I must be a mistake.
It'll be interesting to see if stores will still have Y in stock as X seems to be more popular. I'll be downloading X at midnight and I'll be getting Y in December, right before Pokemon Bank comes out. However it is sad that items cannot be held while a Pokemon is in Pokemon Bank. I guess I'll have to borrow a 3DS so I can get all of the mega evolutions and Pokemon on one game.
I feel sorry for people that bought the Joindots games at full price. I thought Nintendo had restictions in place to prevent this kind of rapid price drop?
(Even though it's just a sale it still seems quite dramatic).
Crap week - WHERE IS PICROSS-E3??!
For Pokemon I will wait to get my phisical copy Saturday, but meanwhile it will be a pleasure to finally play Little Inferno
EDIT: Wow... so catched by Pokemon that I even didn't notice about Overclocked O.O;;;
I wanted that game badly back in April, but not sure I'll be able to pick it up now with all the new releases coming... Still awesome to know I can finally find it easily if I'll decide to buy it ^^
Lol at Pokemon's price on eShop.. £40 for digital or £31 for physical?
Not like i'm buying it anyway.
@Hunter-D I'm having the same internal discussion...
@lbs This!
I've also resolved never to turn in Nintendo Stars unless I desperately want something, in case there's a promotion coming!
Really, their VC pricing makes me want to punch somebody. Seriously. Those games are total garbage by today's standards (with very, very, very rare exceptions) and only good for a nostalgic chuckle. They should be given away for free as a bonus kind of thing ("play all classic nintendo games on WiiU VC for free!").
Asking €5 for such trash is not just out of touch, it's plain insulting. Who in the world buys that crap at such a price? Who, really? I mean, Golf? Tennis? I'd probably pass at 40c even.
Little Inferno however is a fun little time killer. It's not necessarily worth €10 player unless you like that kind of 'Alchemy'-style puzzler, but it's well worth €5.
NA gets escape zombie city this week!
Oh well, with Earthbound and Golf being brand new VC games that never appeared on the Wii, we could see more new games too like Megaman 6 and X3 onwards...
...and dare I say it, NES PRO WRESTLING? XD
Nintendo has the most enviable library of retro games ever... and they barely release some of those epic SNES/NES games. It would be great if they release A Link to the Past so we can play it before A Link Between Worlds... I hope they do that.
Downloading Pokemon X here!
Still not sure which version of Pokemon to get leaning towards X ver though.
Oh wow these discounted prices are quite awesome.
I'm in the USA so I can't vote, but I guess people like physical Pokemon games rather than digital in Europe.
@Gold When the digital copies are £40 each, certainly!
if the temp discounts hit the states as well thursday i grab them all for a buck. ( i doubt they be that cheap)
another awful week for both consoles
Nothing for me this week, getting x and y retail.
@123akis It's stupid nintendo still hasn't even mentioned a release date for Europe and America.Hopefully we hear something soon.
I'm getting the physical version of Pokémon X for now, but I'd like to download it eventually.
matter of opinion i guess but... not a shabby week at all
Shin Megami and a bucket load of £2 mediocre but cheap as chips software
could be alot worse
Golf is a Wii U VC exclusive. I wonder if Pro Wrestling, Super Tennis of Pilotwings 64 will join as well.
@DarkCoolEdge
I just bought Pokemon Y from game for £34.99. They send me a download code midnight on Thursday, I also got Pokedex Pro 3D for free with it for buying before launch day which is £13.49 on the eshop. Just got £53.48 worth of digital download software for £34.99.
Well played game and Nintendo. I wasn't gonna bother with Pokemon until i saw this offer online today, bought using PayPal too, sold old Saturn stuff on eBay, used tr takings to buy from eshop? And accrue reward points to knock money of other digital 3DS and Wii U games????
Lovely do
@C-Olimar We are celebrating the release of the Nintendo 2DS – that is the reason for the price of 2. We asked Nintendo to mention this information, but for some reason they failed to do so…
@Joindots Is it? That's cool
I downloaded 3 games, currently enjoying Murder on the Titanic.
