When we received a press release for Bombing Bastards coming to the Wii U eShop last year, our instinct was "good luck with that", assuming it'd undergo a name change before release. Nope, none of it, as it then launched on the eShop in July 2014.
It was a further indication, among others, of Nintendo loosening some of its rules and requirements. Yet ironically Sony, a hardware manufacturer with systems hosting more mature games than we've had hot dinners, got a little iffy over the name. In a press release confirming the title will arrive on PS4 next week, Sanuk Games highlighted that the name had been changed to Bomber Busters "on request from Sony".
It's an intriguing bit of trivia, in any case, as an example where Nintendo was actually more relaxed about such things than its rivals; as the saga with Binding of Isaac showed in past years, that hasn't always been the case.
As for Bombing Bastards on Wii U, we gave it a modest recommendation in our review.

Well, given that Nintendo has almost zero third party support, they have to play nice.
On a related note, Starwhal has lost it's 'just the tip' tag line. Not sure if it's related to the Wii U release or not.
Woudn't be the first. Stealth Inc. was Stealth Bastard before it launched on Playstation systems.
LOL, Playstation is just for little kids who cannot handle this language.
No reason why it shouldn't be allowed. 'Bastard' is in the English dictionary after all...
Now c***, m*********r, d******d and w***** I could understand!
@datamonkey If you look at a dictionary, you'll realize all bad language is in it.
Oh the irony...
Far cry from the SNES "puffs of sweat" days.
Name not censored on Wii U, Name censored on PS4.
lol
On the topic of a game that's been on Nintendo first and subsequently being adjusted for another platform, Conker's Bad Fur Day was also censored by Microsoft (something to think about if you're wanting the Rare Replay maybe).
If you want to compare Sony and Ntinedo my most glaring example of where Nitneod beats Sony hands down is w/ digital purchases. Nintnedo lets me use my credit card topay whatever a game costs, 99c, $1.99, whatever. Sony requires a $5 minimum added to your "wallet". Which I think is just insane. Ihave a Sony credit card that gets way more use on my Wii U. I have about $2.23 in my Sony account and whenever I want to buy a $5 game Sony makes me add $5 form my credit card, leaving me w/ the same $2.23 or so after I make my purchase. There have been several game recently I just haven't bought b/c it seems so stupid, From Dust being the latest. In our digital age of so many microtransactions and 99c games it just seems crazy Sony wants to charge me a $5 minimum to buy anything. So I don't buy anything less than $5.00.
It's official. Nintendo are more mature than Sony.
Sony did that before with BMX XXX. Sony was the only one to strip it down a few, while Microsoft and Nintendo kept everything. I remember Nintendo stripping down Mortal Kombat, taking the blood away as to where Sega left it in. As for the Sony credit of having to add $5 (as what a few have stated), who cares...at least they don't add tax onto all of their purchases, as to where nintendo adds tax. You get a $20 E-Shop card and see two $10 games, and you can't even get both of them because of this.
Sony has more mature games, but nintendo needs the 3rd party support, or they just ignored what the title was and just wanted to have it's exclusiveness first.
I do remember Conker's Bad Fur day coming out on X-box and really disappointed on how most of the swearing was taken out and some of the blood and mature content...never did understand it. Never understood why nintendo doesn't delve more into the horror genre either...does anyone know if they bought the rights to Eternal Darkness, or did they just let it pass by? I'd love to see the game return to Wii U (even if it's the first one as a download) or even a new one in the series on the NX?
@GLA Good to know...thanks!
@rjejr yeah they used to just let you top up whatever you needed on PSN. I think now if it's over a fiver you can top up the exact amount (so if you've 2.23 and the game is 8.50 you'll be able to add 6.27 rather than having to top up 10)
The reason is they get charged per card transaction. So if you top up 50p they could end up loosing money on that transaction but over a fiver and it balances out enough in their favour. Sony used to allow it for the same reasons I think Nintendo allow it currently - they were still building the brand and consumer awareness and confidence in their online storefronts. At the moment it's more valuable for them to suck up that odd financial hit (and they do add up) in order to build brand confidence and familiarity. Both with consumers and devs.
I wouldn't be surprised if next gen Nintendo do the same.
@BinaryFragger Sony crushes Nintendo on the sales front, and Nintendo still doens't have an answer to PS+, going so far as canceling the 10% DDP and closing up Club Nintendo in the US, and instead choosing to sell 20 year old VC games for $8 each while Microsoft sells 30 for $30, and Sony is probably making a lot more money form me than Nintendo is, but I probably would have spent another $20 - $30 recently if Sony would just let me buy stuff. Having the same $2 in my account before and after buying a $5 game aggravates me. From Dust is sitting in my cart at $4.50 and I probably won't pull the trigger b/c then I'll have $2.50 in my account. Nonsense.
But yeah in pretty much every other way Sony beats Ntineod hands down, that's why that 1 thing is so glaring to me.
I'm still amazed that Nintendo allowed them to keep the name.
@Ogbert But it's a Sony credit card, they are paying the interest to themselves. And somehow the Android and IOS stores manage just fine. Can you imagine if every time over the past 12 years somebody tried to buy a 99c song on iTunes they needed to add $5 to their account? I don't think Apple is worrying too much about building brand awareness for anything beginning w/ the letter "i". It's why Apple TV never sold well, they didn't call it iTV. Or iTamponV.
I remember Nintendo being the only ones happy to release Manhunt 2 uncut, but Sony and the BBFC demanded it be censored first. Despite that you could still argue that the Wii played host to the most violent game of its generation as it had the player physically acting out the brutal kills with motion controls.
@rjejr Actually, about that, Play Store on Android has issues too. If I have Google Play credit and it's lower than the item I'm trying to buy, I have to pay completely with a different payment method. Odd to say the least. Not sure if that problem is on iOS as well since I don't own an iOS device.
@Ernest_The_Crab Well that's good to know, thanks. I've never ever had any money in my account, I just always use my credit card and pay the exact amount. Though that does remind me I think I have $10 in credit I need to use, if it hasn't expired already.
@arronishere No, not sure. But I can't see a special edition on the web though, can you point me in it's direction? It looks to me it lost it the tag line early 2015, around the time of the playstation releases. There is some prerelease playstation marketing that still uses it. Now their website, steam & PSN are all just Starwhal. Only the kickstarter still has it.
@rjejr Yeah, you'll probably want to find something close to your store credit amount to purchase if you want to use it, otherwise you'll just be stuck with a tiny balance. I'm one of those people where seeing a tiny unusable balance bothers me.
Was it a promotional balance? It probably has an expiry date if it is. Otherwise, I don't think credits expire if you get them from a gift card or purchase through other monetary means.
Funniest trailer I've seen in a while! They've basically copied bomberman, thrown in music from Tetris, and then have some weird taglines mentioned throughout "I love this game" to convince someone this is cool.
@datamonkey So the bombers were born out of wedlock?
Refused to consider it b/c of the name. Come on!
lol (really, that says everything)
Oh the irony.
Going back further, Sony was the only one to have women wear tops in the BMX XXX game. Nintendo was okay with them being topless.
I'm just wondering how Sony gamers are taking it since if it was vic versa, Nintendo gamers would riot on its over protective parenting.
The sad part is people were getting bans for saying the name when this first came out.
But how many WiiU's will it sell! Lol.
I'll look into this game on sale later next year
"It was a further indication, among others, of Nintendo loosening some of its rules and requirements."
http://www.destructoid.com/nintendo-s-cracking-down-on-speedrunning-and-rom-hacking-videos-310152.phtml
@Nintendian Well they did specifically say "some".
@JLPick Well, Fatal Frame Maiden of Black Water a thing.
@JLPick I don't know where you live, but I don't have to pay tax on any digital purchases I make. If a game's $5.99, I pay $5.99.
@rjejr well not everyone does have a Sony credit card it's not all that uncommon a system. A lot of smaller (as in chain size) physical shops still have the same rule, card payments of ÂŁ5 and up only.
Apple couldn't call it iTV as here in the UK ITV has been a channel long before Apple adopted the 'i' branding. I'm not sure how Apple gets around the payment thing with the AppStore though.
To be fair, the original title was "meh" anyways.
But granted, i was a little confised that it went through with Nintendo in the first place ^^.
@ultraraichu Most of them are preoccupied whining about the fact, that PS+ doesnt offer the newest retail games for free
And if that isnt cool anymore, they come up with excuses for the vast amount of "remastered" editions. Been there, done that.
For me, it speaks volumes that i already spend more time with Mario Maker, which released yesterday than with MGSV, which released over a week ago and which is hailed as (again) THE reason to upgrade to a next gen console.
@MortalKombat2007 : I was about to mention that.
Sony need to stop censoring game names.
@kyuubikid213 I live in Pennsylvania, and for some reason, if I find a game on the Wii Shop for $1, I end up paying $1.06 after. When I lived in Florida, it was $1.07 then. Even on my 3DS I end up having to pay the tax on the games I downloaded...this was only on the E-Shop though, as to when you set it up, it asks for your region. That's the only thing I hate about the E-Shop and wish that nintendo would get rid of it. The way I see it, if I get a $20 card, I want to be able to purchase two $10 games, not just one and a cheaper game. That's the only thing I hate about that.
@Spacey Fatal Frame isn't nintendo-only made. Other than that, nintendo doesn't have a lot of mature titles and adding one or two each year, isn't a big thing. Horror is almost dense for nintendo recently, except the Gamecube had a lot.
@Ogbert Probably the same way Apple got around it's issues w/ Apple records, they claimed they would never get into music,then they created iTunes, and then I'll just assume they paid them off bc/ I never found out what happened after that. Or maybe Apple just bought Apple or $500. Maybe Apple can buy the iTV station?

Censorship is always an odd beast, simply because it seems like there is never a clear standard.
Nintendo allowed a game to have Bastards in its title, but had an issue with Tharja's trophy in the NA version of Smash and for years, refused to allow Binding of Issac on its systems.
Sony is the home of countless mature rated games, and yet they take issue when it comes to a title, despite many of the games(and movies) on their platforms using the same word or something far more harsh.
Nintendo and Sony kinda remind me of the old English dub of Dragon Ball Z. It was fine to have characters bleeding all over the place and the fights to be uncensored, but cursing was not allowed even in the uncut versions. If I recall, the uncut versions even had nudity, but still not cussing.
Which made it funny to watch a dub where a character is getting the crap beat out of him, is covered in blood, and the best he can come up with is shouting "Darn"
This is what makes censorship so funny. One thing is perfectly fine, but something else that is no worse generally has to be changed.
@ToneDeath and it was even a decent game too. It was a shame they censored the kills.
Nintendo has had plenty of mature games over the years. They just don't advertise them. Madworld paved the way for bayonetta. No more heroes was an awesome 2 games. Wii just didn't have the HD fps expierence that Xbox and ps had.
@rjejr @BinaryFragger @Ogbert @Ernest_The_Crab
If in the US, just change your e-shop Zipcode to 97330 and never worry about sales tax again. Simple as that.
Google isn't hard.
@JLPick
Tax on Nintendo consoles depend on where you live. I've made dozens of purchases across the Wii, Wii U and 3DS and have never payed a dime in taxes. That's one of the few good things about living in Oklahoma, I guess.
@Chaotic_Eevee The way the US govt and NYC police act these days I'd be worried about being attacked. They tackled James Blake to the ground under suspicion of credit card fraud. Not a rapist, not a killer, not a mugger, credit card fraud.
They'd probably confiscate my house for tax evasion. It's what Al Capone went to jail for 11 years for.
http://learning.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/10/17/oct-17-1931-al-capone-guilty-of-tax-evasion/?_r=0
I'll just pay, but thanks.
@rjejr yeah its tax evasion, but whatever. I think I do it on my 3DS but not Wii U.
I'm not paying tax on every AC or pikachu 3DS theme I buy. NTY.
I did it since I got the OG 3DS when it came out, I got all of the year 1 eShop stuff, good library of games. haven't legit used the eShop in a while except for the Humble Nindie bundle, and the AA game...
@BulbasaurusRex Exactly!
So the real title is actually "Bombing By Those Born out of Wedlock!"
lol
@Uberchu Having to pay for a theme is bad enough, having to pay tax on a theme purchase would push me to crime as well.
@burninmylight I never got it. I never paid taxes on the Wii channel, or the cards to purchase it (unless I used my credit card on the system itself). I never had taxes on the cards of store of Playstation or Microsoft and never with the DS, but the Wii U and 3DS I do, which I hate. I wish there was a way to get around it, but I haven't figured it out yet.
@rjejr I don't mind paying for themes TBH as long as It's a high quality theme, the first pikachu theme didn't have looping sound so it was the worst one so far, the other themes are quite good, wish they were slightly cheaper though. I hate the AC 2015 Newyear theme mostly because of the clown sheep, but w/e. Their might be a 2016 one then maybe
picking up the new Pika 3DS themes on friday after I transfer to my N3DS. Might consider looking up other Themes as well, looking for ones that have matching face plates, I know all the stripe themes have one.
