Earlier today we highlighted the fact that the Star Fox Zero official website has some lovely wallpapers to download that help ease the pain of its delay into Q1 2016. Sure, it'd have been nice to play the game this festive season, but putting one of these on our desktop will cheer us up in the meantime.
The official website is thin on detail, but some of its smaller text - as can often be the case with early Nintendo game pages - has captured the imagination of fans. The pertinent text is below.
Game, system and amiibo sold separately. Compatibility and functionality of amiibo may vary by game. Visit amiibo.com for specific details on how each amiibo works.
Broadband Internet access required for online features. For more info, go to support.nintendo.com.
It's a no-brainer that there'll be some use of amiibo in the game, we'd think, simply due to the fact that we already have Fox and Falco figures either on the market or coming soon. It's the online features aspect that is perhaps most exciting, assuming it's not simply there for bog-standard Miiverse support.
A form of online play could certainly be interesting to see, should it come to pass - will the confirmed co-op have an online option, or could there be online dog-fights reminiscent of the local-only multiplayer mode seen in Star Fox 64 3D?
Right now only Nintendo and PlatinumGames know. We can only speculate, so how would you like to see amiibo and internet play utilised in Star Fox Zero?

Hopefully!
I'll be getting this regardless but local (also online) multiplayer would certainly add to the value
'online features' does not at ALL imply online multiplayer. Every Nintendo game now is compatible with Miiverse so should feature this disclaimer, and it most certainly could apply to Miiverse integration eg tingle battles.
@DarthNocturnal Yeah, I fear this is just a quick copy and paste job and isn't actually in the game. I imagine after E3 and lots of natter about it being in or not, that multiplayer would be in the game after the delay.
@EverythingAmiibo Yes....that was clearly stated in the article....
Multiplayer was confirmed to not be in the game originally, but here's hoping the delay allows them to include dogfights that also can be played online.
@EverythingAmiibo the article is talking about how people are dreaming about the possibility because the website doesn't explain what these features are. And it does mention Miiverse support as a possibility.
I would love me some multi player in this game. Mmmmm-M!
I won't get excited about this unless Nintendo confirms online multiplayer. It could easily be a mistake, or just referring to miiverse.
The battle modes have always been mundane, so I'm hoping for actual online co-op. More than that, though, a local co-op campaign would be awesome.
Probably referring to Miiverse integration. As for amiibo, that might get it's own line with Fox, Falco, Slippy, Peppy, and an Arwing walker. Maybe Wolf.
"vague starter websites"
Such early web pages are best ignored. Just a suggestion: focus elsewhere until a Direct airs.
I'm not sure how well it would sell, but maybe they got the Arwing Amiibo made?
Pity Star Fox has become ugly since Nintendo dumped Rare's exquisite model and went with Namco or Q games pathetic redesign.
amiibo are a given. A few people on here were saying Mario Tennis wouldn't have amiibo support b/c it wasn't announced or on the box. And they were correct, it wasn't, but that game was always going to have amiibo support. Turned out it has the best amiibo support of any game, might still convince me to get it. Every Nintendo game going forward will probably support amiibo in some way. Every. Single. One. Mostly just skins. OR money. Or a simple pop-on on the screen like that NintndoDog in SSB.
Online means Miiverse. Can somebody explain to me why all those Miis show up in my hub world in Yoshi Wooly World? They could at least give me gems or hints or something. The Miis in Pokemon Rumble World let us access worlds for money, that was a neat little addition that I used often. I keep clicking on all of them in Yoshi and all I get are meaningless scribble. But it is online.
Starfox Zero would of course be the perfect game for dog-fighting, it's a space shooter after all, almost boggles the mind to not have multiplayer in a space shooter, online or off, but it's Ntinedo. AS:aF doesn't have online either and its a board game that requires each player have their own amiibo. It will probably have online though, more Miiverse posts.
Who knows, maybe 4 months is long enough to tack on an entire online vs shooter mode. I dont see how that, but that really would have been a good thing to talk about at E3.
Wallpapers ease the wait!! What is this 1997?
Oh man, I'm looking at the toys R Us ad now, and it's incredibly horrible. Not Starfox, it's not TRU fault Nintendo delayed it, but the rest of the shovelware in the Wii U ad.
Xbox One: Mad Max, Tomb Raider, Fallout 4, WWE, COD
PS4: Tearwaway, NBA, COD, SW:Battlefront, FIFA
Wii U: Snoopy, Puppy Rescue, Adventure Time, Starfox, Just Dance Disney 2
Those are the top 3 lines of games for their respective consoles in the order they appear. Wii U is basically the bargain bin system w/o Starfox.
On the bright side AC:aF is listed for 11/13, it really does exist. That's the only time I've seen it advertised anywhere at all.
@EverythingAmiibo That's my thinking. It's an online feature that requires broadband internet. It's amazing how easily this can be explained by anything except something exciting or interesting. For that matter, is there a single Wii U game that doesn't come with that information attached? That'd be a better indicator.
4-on-4 or 6-on-6 dogfights online would be amazing. The more planes in the sky, the better
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2015/06/star_fox_zero_doesnt_have_online_multiplayer_yet
Are we forgetting this? While it certainly isn't ruled out, I'm not getting my hopes up for any sort of notable online mode.
@AlexSora89 Good luck with that.
Online features = Miiverse. Sorry guys.
@rjejr A ''bargain bin'' without Star Fox? I think you meant shovelware stack.
There's a plausible scenario where the delay opens up an opportunity to work with a portion of the Splatoon team to get something up and running. Maybe even as a barebones mode to meet the new release date with a plan to keep updates coming (this time not "on disk").
Not impossible. Not likely.
For the 2016 NX believers, Star Fox VS. could be an early game building off of Star Fox for multiplayer; online and otherwise.
There are so many unknown factors we just aren't able to account for, though. Honestly, it would be nice to see more than some desktop backgrounds first.
@MitchVogel true, but that was also back in June with the expected release this year.
Off topic
Anybody know what time SSM updates? I'm pretty sure that was today. Kids will be home from school in a few minutes and that will be the first thing they ask me. Well they won't ask me what time it updates, they'll ask me if it updated yet.

This game doesn't mention online features at all on the website. I think Star Fox will have something more than just Miiverse functionality.
I am hoping the delay is adding Amiibo and online multiplayer features. Fox team vs Wolf team 4 x 4 battles would be awesome!!
I would absolutely love online co-op. I have always wanted a cooperative feature in the Nintendo 64 version as the battle mode never caught the interest of me or my friends. As for amiibos, I think everyone was expecting support for them. It's just a matter of whether or not they will be implemented well or just end up being a gimmick.
@Discostew As @MitchVogel said, that was in June, and the game was to be released this month. That could've changed since then. Anyways, online multiplayer would be awesome, and amiibo functionality is pretty much guaranteed.
@Octane Whatever it is, it's lame. And no XCX? If you switch out Puppy Rescue for XCX it at least has 1 game. I suppose the Dec 4 date excluded it from the pre-Black Friday book. XCX does help though. And Mario Tennis, while not Super Mario Galaxy 3, I think still counts as an actual game.
Ad makes it look worse than it is.
Wii U: Snoopy, Puppy Rescue, Adventure Time, Starfox, Just Dance Disney 2
Wii U: Mario Tennis, XCX, Adventure Time, AC:aF, JD 2016
It's not s stellar line-up by any means, but there are games.
Now hold your breath people, this doesn't mean that there will be online play in Star Fox Zero. I doubt they would put online play in this game because 1 they said they wouldn't, and 2, this game is being delayed for 3-4 months it seems? Can you really put online play in a game that doesn't have online play in it in the span of a season? Also, I'd like to add that these potential "Online features" could be the same BS features in Star Fox 64 3D when you would use their crappy internet browser to look up potential routes to other words.
Another good example is remember when Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze was delayed? People thought maybe because of this delay, they'll put online features in it? When the actual reason is.... No one knows. The point is, the game didn't have online features when people assumed it would have some.
So expect Amiibo functionality in some form (Honestly, it's fair to expect all/most Nintendo games to have some function for Amiibos.) And if this game does have some online features, it's not going to be what you think it is.
I hope online is coming!
I wouldn't be surprised if either were in the game. I would actually be more surprised if Amiibo support wasn't in the game.
Meanwhile, my friend just wants to know if Krystal is on it
The amiibo functionality is pretty much free Arwing skins, like different company skins on the same type of airplane. I wonder about that transformable Arwing amiibo, though... Wouldn't that just be awesome?
I hope Nintendo makes online dogfights a reality. It would really help the game.
@Yorumi Is that official? It sure does feel like one, but I remember at E3 Miyamoto kind of beating around the bush, saying it wasn't a reboot but it wasn't a continuation of the series.
I am still not excited about this game. There's too many areas that need addressing and I hope that the delay aims to do just that and not just add new features.
I'm working on my 4ty playthrough this week of n64 starffox and im OK with that game but new visuals. Online in no way is a deal breaker, but would it be nice to have a true co op online....yes I think so. But I'm not holding my breath.
Well, regardless of the extra features this game will include, I must say that the box art this game has is EPIC. At the very least I know I'll have a cool box that will be sitting on my shelf. I'm sure the game will be good fun as well, even with the early impressions of some people.
@rjejr you think that's bad? Here in Australia, the Wii U is now more expensive than the Xbox One!
@FierceRagnar So there is no point in adding online play because in 5 to 10 years we may not be able to play it if they close the servers?
Online play would definitely be a huge plus for a game like this but knowing Nintendo's track record there is almost zero chance of this actually happening. Hopefully I am wrong but I am highly doubtful though if the core game is replayable enough then online won't really matter to me.
Amiibo could easily be in reference to Fox and Falco which no doubt will have some functionality in the game.
Online features could be as little as leaderboards or Miiverse stamps/comments.
Let's not get too hyped over speculation everyone.
@EverythingAmiibo
Exactly. Miiverse means all games fall into this category now.
Nothing to see here folks. Move along.
Falco was meant to come out the same day as the game's old release date, so no real surprise.
@Ichiban Well just b/c it's worse in Aus doesn't make it good in the US.
I don't see how they could justify that though. That should be a built in software automatic circuit breaker type of thing - if PS4 or X1 get lower than Wii U in price, Wii U price drops.
Does X1 sell in Australia better than Japan? Not that it sell worse than in Japan, I meant much better.
Online play would be awesome!
I doubt the online. I feel as if it's just referring to Miiverse, as that's on every Wii U and 3DS game.
I'm hoping for the transformable Arwing amiibo, but I think we would have heard more about that by now if it was going to happen. I'd have to buy two though because there is no way I'm leaving one un-transformed in the box.
If amiibo functionality involves recolorable skins for the vehicles, that's a cool bonus too - would work very well in conjunction with potential online dogfights as you can have a level of customization with your ships. Either way, I'm waiting with bated breath for more.
Online MP should be mandatory, really. Direct, please!
The website appears to be down for me... odd
@IceClimbers I'd say that was a given really, Miyamoto did say he wanted Amiibo integration with star fox just so he could have an Arwing Amiibo and last I head they was working on a transforming one
Nintendo need more online multiplayer games as they're lagging behind Sony and Microsoft. Please let online multiplayer be true.
Id love some 4v4 capture the flag and clan colors and name customs etc etc would be awesome !
Online play would be a way to get more people to buy this.
But Nintendo is run by old men, stuck in the 90's, and a vocal hipster community who pretend to agree with every antiquated idea Nintendo does and never want the company to move forward.
