Splatoon had an admirable amount of post release support, with new game modes, maps, clothes, and weapons, being regularly added to the game via free updates. While it was inevitable that there would come to be an end to all the free goodness, the question of more, paid DLC has been raised many times. Splatoon developers have always been evasive when it comes to this subject, but a recent comment from the game's producer suggests that extra content may be coming in the future in some form.
Hisashi Nogami recently took to the stage at the end of the Splatoon Koshien 2016 tournament and thanked fans for all of their support. Interestingly enough, Nogami mentioned the possibility of future content at the end of his speech. Naturally, he was non-committal with the wording, but it seems that DLC may not be entirely over for Splatoon. Here's a rough translation of what he had to say, courtesy of a NeoGAF member:
We announced that updates to the game would end in January but I'm starting to wonder if we can't organize a little something else.
Considering the recent discovery of two potential new amiibo, along with the unused files for playable Octolings, it certainly is plausible that the team could have more in store for Nintendo's popular shooter.
What do you think? Will there eventually be more content for Splatoon? What would you like to see added? Drop us a comment in the section below.

I knew not to give up hope! Let the hype begin!
I smell a Nintendo Direct coming soon...
If they add new content now, then they would have been lying through their teeth when they said that content was ending in January.
I hope it's not paid DLC if they add anything. The price of DLC on Splatoon is already vastly expensive since you currently need to buy 3 amiibo to unlock everything.
Save the Octolings for the sequel so they can give them a proper story of their own. Give us Callie Marie amiibo though.
Welp, if it's more amiibo I can't say I would bother with it especially since I'm not really into the game any more, I think three is good enough, however if they could make use from amiibo like Mario and Link then go ahead, make more use out of already existing amiibo!
If it's paid DLC then they really need to do something a little more special, you could keep making the same content over and over again like guns and clothing, but some characters and character changes would be swell, weapon camo would be great, and I think more customization stuff would be needed/wanted, I would even check it all out!
@crimsontadpoles
*to unlock bonus contents not affecting core gameplay.
I'd happily pay £15 to £20 for a brand new single player 8 hour campaign.Ramp up the difficulty too so the enemy actually put up a fight.
@allav866 There HAS to be. There's Detective Pikachu and the Mario Amiibo game that haven't been announced for the West. The new rumored Splatoon Amiibos. CoroCoro is teasing a major reveal for Pokemon in just a few weeks. It's likely Z, so surely Nintendo will announce the game beforehand. Miitomo comes out in just two months. Star Fox Zero and Pokken come out soon too. There's a lot of things Nintendo needs to cover and not very long to do it. Like, I'll be shocked if there isn't a Direct by the end of this week.
I don't get why people get so down on Amiibo. If I have to pay for DLC anyway, I'd prefer it come in the form of Amiibos, honestly. I get the DLC and a cool figure that I'd buy anyway? Fine by me. I hope that's how Nintendo does DLC in the future for a lot of their first party games. Just as long as the Amiibo are east to fine, and really, lately they have been. So it's cool.C.
More content to the best game on Wii U would be awesome!
@Mr_Action Oh my God. Words fail at moments like this. Nintendo want consumers like you. I however, think SCamiibo are disgusting!
Funny how the free updates have just ended and now there's talk of future DLC, which of course will have to be paid for. I won't be surprised if Callie amd Marie SCamiibo are announced. They could have easily been put in the game before now. Sure hackers have played as Octolings months ago. It wouldn't take much effort on Nintendo's part to put either in the game but then they most likely want us to pay for the privilege. I for one can live without them as I find them highly irritating.
@Sligeach It's going to be okay, they're just plastic figures.
How I wish Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash had just half of the type of support Splatoon has "already" received.
If ever a Wii U game was crying out for lots more content it's Mario Tennis on the Wii U, can't believe Nintendo released such a bare bones game in the series to begin with, but, to have no support since release is a total let down.
@CliffordB
They had to have something for Christmas since Zelda and Star Fox were delayed and While Xenoblade X is awesome, it's not a system seller. So they released a game with little content and hoped that someone would buy it.
We need a Judd Amiibo , a Captain cuttlefish Amiibo, a Spike Amiibo, a Jellyfish Amiibo and of course, Callie and Marie Amiibos!
@CliffordB It was either Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash or Star Fox Zero that had to get thrown under the bus for a Christmas release. MT: US lost out. The public perception of the game is so bad even if Nintendo had any plans for future updates they've now since been abandoned.
@cfgk24 We don't NEED any SCamiibo.
@crimsontadpoles Not quite, the setup of content ending at a certain time period after launch has been prominent throughout Splatoon's lifespan. First it was going to end in the summer, then changed to the fall, then changed to January so it feels like the sales of the game just keep surpassing expectations which leads to new content coming. Don't forget that Splatoon sales in Japan were insane during the Christmas period.
@Lizuka I never said you NEED the game. And as for the word SCamiibo, it's a brilliant play on words. I can tell you love it. Not sure if I should write it as "SCAMiibo" instead though, you know to reinforce how much of a SCAM they are.
The amount of faith Nintendo had in their new IP is nothing short of amazing.
I hope they can take it as a good sign of things to come when it comes to new IPs as well.
im excited either way. Paid or otherwise.
I hope we here more about it in a future direct.
More single player stuff! Come on! Or make the single player a stand alone game.
Am I honestly the only one who saw a ratchet & clank style game from the single player experience? It's a concept that begs for expansion/exploration!
So much potential not being tapped into...
Single player content! Better local multiplayer! modes! stages! clothes! MORE!
@GammaNoises I've never played Ratchet & Clank so I can't really compare but I agree,it's a concept that most definitely needs expanded and explored.I often go back to Octo Valley just to replay some random stages and my only gripe would be there is too few levels and a complete lack of challenge The potential is there though for Splatoon to be one of the greatest 3D platformer's ever made.Whether it will be in the form of DLC,a stand-alone game or the inevitable sequel.
Better local multiplayer would be nice. I'd be happy to pay for that.
@Mr_Action If I have to pay for DLC, I just want the content, I don't want to pay extra for toy production, shipping and whatnot. The total price of Splatoon DLC is €45 at the moment. That's more than the game itself in Europe, definitely not worth the price. Also, it's cool if you're into toys and stuff, but as someone who has no desire to buy any of those figurines at all, the idea of hunting down plastic toys for DLC that's locked to physical figurines is just ridiculous.
@Sligeach Video games in general are a scam
I don't get why so many thinks that any new content will be paid DLC. In Japan in particular, any focus on Splatoon will boost the sales of the game even more, and Nintendo knows this. Adding more free content could mean an additional 1M Splatoon copies sold WW.
You know, on a similar note, I'm really curious what Splatoon 2 will offer-- if there ever is one. Some people think it's inevitable, and yeah, I don't see Nintendo shoving this one to the side like F-Zero or something seeing as how well it sold (and on the Wii U no less!). But I guess I'm just wondering, because as it is Splatoon is pretty damn solid in my opinion. I don't know what kind of big changes could be added in the sequel aside from stages weapons, and some new game modes.
@Octane The gameplay value of the Splatoon amiibo content is really nothing, specially compared to what the online multiplayer offers.
@Gorlokk New iteration of a Splatoon game could be a single player game, a party game, or something else. They have now established a universe and some mechanics that they could expand in any direction. The best design decision they made was not be a part of the Mushroom kingdom.
@Splatburst The thing is though, 'core gameplay' is almost entirely subjective. You could argue that only the online mode counts as 'core gameplay' and use that as an excuse lock away the entire story mode. Personally, I'd quite like to have been able to play all the amiibo challenges and squid jump alternatives without having to invest money and space in plastic toys.
amiibo are certainly divisive. I can definitely see their appeal; they're cute, generally well-made, and bring the characters into the real world in a more meaningful way than most figurine's and merchandise. I quite like their implementations in Yoshi's Woolly World and Super Mario Maker (even though I don't own any) in which they basically act as cans of spray paint. But I think they can be an extra, largely pointless wall between a player and content that would, in an amiibo free world, likely be unlocked through the game itself.
I hope you can understand that requirement to invest in a box of plastic toys, just to play through features that would likely have originally be included in a game, is one that some people somewhat resent. And while I find @Sligeach and @Zool 's crusades against them can get a bit repetitive and morose (though not as bad @Xenocity 's endless lectures on the needs of "hardcore/"real" gamers"), I do agree with them on many points.
@Sligeach I can't believe the audacity of a toy company trying to sell us toys! What a SCAM!
So...Callie/Marie amiibos and playable Octolings, then?
My family has 3 Wii U's and 3 copies of Splat👀n...Nintendo I'd be overly happy to give you my wallet for some Splat👀n dlc. Most enjoyable game I have ever played. Thanks again for creating and selling this marvelous product.
This game does DLC right. It's frequent and it's free. That keeps the original box selling for much longer than it otherwise would, as it becomes a continously better deal.
Waits for it to be announced as paid DLC and then the uproar.
@allav866
What doesn't make people smell direct? It's January, must be a direct soon. The month is almost over, must be a direct soon. Not much in this weeks downloads, must be a direct soon. Not much information about a game, must be a direct soon. Maintenance, must be a direct soon. Random game announcement, must be a direct soon. Random game content announced, must be a direct soon. See my point? It amazes me that people still expect directs as much as they do and they only set themselves up for disappointment.
@Mr_Action
it's more the fact that they need to own the amiibo to unlock the content. Depending on the amiibo, they can be limited quantity making it so you will never get it or have a horrible experience with trying to get it. With this game, it has the problem where you have one of the 3 amiibo only available in the 3 pack. Not everyone bought the 3 pack, people such as myself so if i was to get all the content of the game, I am looking at buying the squid amiibo at a higher from a random dude price simply because I cannot get it separately from Nintendo. At the same time, it is also a form on one disc DLC, meaning that content was created in the game and then removed from the consumer to only be access through the purchase of another product. On Disc DLC is seen as a big no-no in the gaming industry because it literally means that the developer removed created content that was done during the development of the game and instead of buying the full game upon release, you're only buying a piece of it.
The other thing with Amiibo as DLC, some people just want the content, content that would normally cost a couple of dollars like skins are now $15. Mind you, you can often use the amiibo for other games but you are still buying a hunk of plastic... which can break meaning you could lose the content as well.
"starting to wonder" does not translate to "they might have something in store for us".
Just get working on a sequel for the NX launch.
Maybe it's been my recent experiences but finding amiibo isn't as hard as it used to be. The most recent releases have lingered weeks after launch on store shelves. Prices on Amazon are also not grossly inflated. I think Nintendo learned from their mistakes and now provide greater quantities when they ship new figures.
On topic: I'm certainly not against new content even if they are simply Callie & Marie amiibo. I want the figures myself. The fact that certain users in these comments seem so against them is quite frankly hilarious. No matter your reasons, amiibo is here to stay as they're providing great income for Nintendo. Income they need, we as fans should be happy because some of this will turn into new games from the company. And I for one want them to continue making games.
I hope they add more DLC! A Callie and Marie amiibo would be awesome, but I'd also like to see an amiibo for Judd and maybe the shopkeepers. Go Splatoon!
@Gorlokk I think it would be exactly that: just bigger and better. Like a new iteration of Smash, the idea wouldn't change, but it would grow every time.
The idea that we can only play on two modes and four maps at any one time is ridiculous. They would not only make more maps and modes for a sequel, but allow us to choose whichever ones we wanted to play, ya know, like EVERY other online multiplayer game does. The game would also have more weapons and weapon types, more gear, a more robust single players and, likely, a real local multiplayer mode. Then a couple things we didn't expect (maybe a mode with more players) and voila.
Hmm, could there be a possibility of having Callie and Marie on the same nfc base, then an octoling (or some other) amiibo?
Turning back on a promise to shut things off for good? HINT HINT, SAKURAI.
the game that keeps on giving
@Mr_Action Ehhhh... Beilieve it or not, some people dont have the time or resources to find their favorite amiibo. Some people dont want plastic figurines crowding their home. They just want the DLC, which is On Disk unfortunately, due to amiibo. Mario Maker remedied this thankfully. I personally have 30 amiibo, so future amiibo compatible games will be no problem for me
I'd personally pay for more singleplayer content, and possibly even for local multiplayer expansion (what is there currently is rather barebones). I don't think we need more weapon sets and/or multiplayer maps though, there's already plenty of both to keep the game interesting.
@crimsontadpoles I'm pretty sure the question they response to was about updates. You know free dlc. Nobody lied.
@ikki5 I do agree with you about the 3 pack thing. The only amiibo out of the 34 I own that I paid above the msrp for was the squid. I had to import it from Japan. I didn't pay that much more but I would have preferred not to at all.
How about an NX Splatoon Ultimate Edition with the Octolings added plus more content but I would prefer a Splatoon 2 tho on the NX.
@faint First I just got Inkling Girl, but then i wanted the rest and I had to buy the 3-pack. Cost me £40, plus the £10 i originally paid for the lone Inkling amiibo. (Now I have two Inkling Girls)
I would be fine with amiibo DLC if it was easy to get and not such a hassle!
@Splatburst As weird as it sounds I actually agree with you.
Splatoon NX: Octoling's Story
Paid DLC please ( very good DLC however)
I'm not a fan of amiibo, but I do want the extra arcade minigames. Would I have to scan the amiibo every time I start the game, or can I just unlock the games somehow then give the amiibo to my kids?
Also, DLC yes! lots more customisable and more inventive outfits at least please. Splatoon is really cool, but there's an untapped rich vein of wackiness there...
@toxibunny There's no need to constantly scan the amiibo to play the minigames, once you unlock them, you get to keep them forever. So yes, it's possible to unlock the minigames and give away the amiibo later.
Yes please...I'm new to Splatoon, don't end the party now!!
I smell NX Super-fresh edition. The only way to get even more DLC!!
NX handheld super-fresh edition please, playing on the Wii U servers against and alongside Wii U players. I need that at-home, me and the missus on the couch online co-op, like we do in mariokart. I'd buy an NX handheld just for that.
I'm hoping for new amiibo but honestly paid dlc is fine at this point. It would be cool to see some sort of integration with existing amiibo...we have a game about clothes so amiibo costumes FTW! The more games that use existing amiibo the better.
