Nintendo has confirmed that the latest Legend of Zelda is pushed back to 2017 and is also coming to NX, but has now gone a step further in outlining the game for its E3 plans. We say plans - The Legend of Zelda on Wii U is going to be the only playable Nintendo game at the LA extravaganza.
The following is from Nintendo of Europe's press release:
E3: Nintendo changes its approach to the show every year. This June, Nintendo will focus its attentions on the upcoming game in The Legend of Zelda series. The Wii U version of the game will be playable for the first time on the E3 show floor, and it will be the only playable game Nintendo presents at the show, in order to provide attendees a complete immersion. Additional information about Nintendo's E3 plans will be announced in the future.
We're not sure this will be interpreted positively by many people. With E3 typically being a showcase for a number of games of varying types, Nintendo's decision to focus solely on the new Legend of Zelda game is rather remarkable. The company has shaken up the E3 formula successfully in the past two years, of course, but it'll be interesting to see how this is received.
What do you think of this news, and does it make you more or less excited for E3? Let us know in the comments.

Wut.
I don't know what they're smoking but I want some.
WOW.
What they show off had better be freaking awesome because that does not sound like a very good E3 for Nintendo, especially since we know the game is not making it in time for Holiday 2016. As for whatever else they have in store for E3, it also had better be good.
Nintendo must either be extremely confident in this new Zelda game, or they are completely out of their minds.
Probably the latter.
In other words!
ITS ALL WE GOT!!
It has to be something special!
That is a bold move.
That's all I can say about this. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing for Nintendo.
Whatever NeXt?
Ummm....
WUT.
idk, i hope they got something good to show.
...odd that zelda is only playable.
So it will be a Zelda Digital Event, or at least mostly Zelda? Well okay then.
Oh my God, WHAT are they doing? E3 is the perfect opportunity to announce NX and get the hype train rolling. Instead, they're showing off a game they've already confirmed as a launch title, on a system that NO ONE WILL BUY IT ON!
Note: I'm exaggerating there, of course people will buy Zelda on the Wii U. But I for one would much rather get a decent launch title on NX. Ridiculous...
I hope this means we get to play it at home too...
Jaysus, this does not sound good for E3 at all
E3 is going to be terrible, but what if they hold their own event late in the year? Show off the NX and it's launch games, maybe sell NX pre-orders that come with some sort of physical thing that can be used as Christmas presents.
Wow. No NX and nothing playable other than Zelda. Let's hope there is a pretty special Direct planned.
Guys, be grateful. At the very least we're not only getting LoZ Wii U footage, we're getting live gameplay.
@Stryker89 They never confirmed it was an NX launch title either. Could be a November 2017 title for all we know.
What the hell are they doing?!?!?!?!
Wait what? Zelda is the only playable game? What happened to color splash, or the new metroid spin off?! Take Mario is Missing for crying out loud! You can not go to E3 with only one game! Did E3 get downsized again and nobody reported it? I feel like there is a catch we aren't seeing.
"It will be the only playable game Nintendo presents at the show, in order to provide attendees a complete immersion"
Got to laugh at them trying to put a positive spin on it.No doubt @Xenocity will be on doing the same.
Am i losing my mind here, or is this getting too funny!?? ...
After last year's terrible E3 I was convinced it couldn't get any worse.....Not so sure anymore. Still feeling the sting of last year's e3.
Hopefully there will be plenty of upcoming games announced.
I don't blame them for not showing NX when the release (handheld for me) won't be till March 2017 so home console even later.
Showing it off at this year E3 would be too early. They had to get something out this year.
I hope this is because they're going to hold a Nintendo Direct around the same time, and have thier own E3 instead. But at least it proves that Zelda WiiU exists, and isn't just a myth to sell the WiiU
@Peach64 Nikkei has reported that Nintendo will be revealing NX details by the end of the year (Hardware features, price, launch titles, etc). So yeah it sounds like you're spot on.
I'm not sure if this says something about Nintendo or E3. I mean sure it's easy to say "oh noes, Nintendo has nothing to show!" but the NX is a thing. If they don't have any content to show then forget the "Wii U is doomed", the 3DS and NX are also doomed if that's the case.
But what if, just maybe, E3 doesn't mean the same thing it used to. Maybe Nintendo want to take their "Nintendo Direct" approach even further. It's not like they're the only company scaling back their presence at E3. Face it guys, E3 isn't what it used to be.
At this point I'm just laughing hysterically, probably like Nintendo is right now! They're mad! Simply mad! Ha-hah!
Phew, alright, that was fun, now when do I wake up? One day closer to seeing the NX at E3 am I right guys?!
Is anyone from Nintendo actually attending or are they just sending a Wii U demo disc labelled "See you next year!"?
One game, I'm speachless.
@Tsurii This. I hope they take this opportunity to highlight whatever third-party lineup they have.
Unfortunately, that is going to leave the Wii U with exactly one full retail release.
@Stryker89 Announcing the NX in E3 wouldn't be the greatest idea. Sony is probably going to showcase both the PS VR and PS4k, plus there will be many other software there, taking the steam of the announcement of the NX
are these guys TRYING to go out of biz? were they not told to steer AWAY from the iceberg?
@whodatninja I'm kinda laughing on the inside too. Only because it feels like everyone (including myself) is losing their minds over this. Like, where are we going and how is this gonna play out??
I'm excited, though. Because even if the Wii U goes out with a whimper instead of a bang (knock on wood), I have a good feeling that the NX is more than likely gonna pick up the slack when more news starts rolling out.
@MarioLazor They didn't say they won't be showing other games as well; they surely will. Those other games just won't be playable.
Shall I start shouting Nintendo is Doomed now??
Wondering when they'll reveal the NX later this year. What would be a good time? October?
@FragRed We just say "Nintendoomed", it's cleaner.
This sounds INSANE!! I love it. Nintendo are up to something, I know it. I trust the Big N and I can't wait to see what they're going to do. They KNOW we're all laughing / crying / mocking / all three... They're up to something, I'm telling ya!
Oh dear...
Either this is an epic troll or Nintendo have nothing to show this year.
Hopefully a Direct or two will clear this up as NoE are going crazy on their press releases today. Lost in translation?
Umm... Oh no. Did I just upgrade to a New 3DS for nothing?
It gets worse
Not being at the show itself I'm never bothered by what they have playable, only what they announce.
Without knowing what they have up their sleeves for later in the year (TGS, Holiday Announcements, Nintendo Directs) it's hard to determine their reasoning.
Perhaps they felt that at this point, there was little point in forwarding huge costs towards a big E3 presence?
With all the news that just hit they should have done a direct. At least the quirkiness might not have pissed off everyone.
@Peraa I don't believe that, I think Nintendo could have easily trounced whatever Sony or Microsoft has up their sleeves at E3. Slightly beefier versions of their current consoles, not a huge deal... If Nintendo did the announcement right, they could have killed it. Now we'll never know.
This would make sense IF they had some kind of NX demo/games to go with it. Otherwise, seems risky. They could at least set up Tokyo mirage Sessions and Paper Mario, with the focus still being on Zelda.
Hopefully it will go off with a bang. The hype around Zelda alone will still be real.
The ups and downs of being a Nintendo fan eh! From the joy of downloading Starfox last night and waking up to the incredible Humble Bundle to the disappointment of this afternoons news. I wouldn't be surprised if the Humble Bundle was to soften the blow of the news to come later haha
They may as well not show up.
I mean one game, for arguably the biggest show of the year ?
No matter how big the title is, it sends a wrong message.
Actually, upon further thought, this makes sense. I mean think about what's coming to 3DS and Wii U in 2016. There's some localisations that they can just reveal the release dates for on Twitter, Federation Force and Color Splash which are toxic PR walking, a couple 3rd party 3DS games, and Pokemon.
So the main presentation could easily just be about Zelda. Pokemon footage posted separately by TPC, assuming it's at E3 at all. TPC has kept main series Pokemon from E3 before!
@Radbot42 I would have liked to see this all as a Nintendo Direct where it was just bad news after bad news but presented by puppets and spun like they were all awesome announcements.
Is this the real life?
Is this just fantasy?
Caught in a landslide,
No escape from reality.
Maybe they are doing this to avoid any "hype" about the upgraded systems. It seems foolish now but it might make sense in the long run.
"Will be the only playable game Nintendo presents at the show, in order to provide attendees a complete immersion."
Have they taken lessons from Game Freak in bullcrap PR spin?
@Moshugan
Nintendo, take our advice,
You need a surprise,
At E3.
Pushed back to 2017? So Wii U will be the only console not to have it's own Zelda game.
And only one playable thing on E3, sorry it this the end of Nintendo?
@Kid_Sickarus Haha, maybe the game will be THE surprise. ;D
But they defo need to have a Direct or two shortly after E3 to showcase their 2016 content.
There are countless developers that show up to E3 with one game. nintendo was always one of the few that had more. This doesn't concern me as much as it excites me to see the world of Zeldawiiu, this game has been in developement for a very very long time. The only thing that makes me upset is that i purchased the WiiU for zelda and although I do want the NX, I hope theres more to offer at launch.
"The Wii U version of the game will be playable for the first time on the E3 show floor, and it will be the only playable game Nintendo presents at the show, in order to provide attendees a complete immersion."
Because it's the only first party Wii U game in production, I'd wager. That and Color Splash. I hope this means that we'll be getting some non-playable previews of NX games, assuming it does get a reveal before E3. Come on, 3D Mario!
Oh man......?!
I knew it would also come to NX, but now I have a feeling we won't even get NX this year. Heck, we even might not see (or hear about) the NX AT ALL at E3!!
Only Zelda U at E3 (or at least the only playable game)? I guess I skip E3 altogether! I won't watch the E3 event ONLY for one game, not live anyway.
And some optimistic people predicting Nintendo returns with all guns blazing....not!!
Oh, from a sales-point 2016 is a lost cause, and probably most of 2017 too (NX release end 2017, you can guess it). Only a few 3DS games sold, but at least Nintendo has the mobile-goldmine and Amiibo!!
What they mean it's the only CURRENT gen game they'll show at E3 as the rest will be taken up with showing HD remasters of GameCube games on the VC (at least 20 games) and official translations of Mother 3, SNES Fire Emblem games and other classics which never made it to the west.....
I can dream can't I?
@Henmii They've already confirmed NX is March 2017 release and is not being revealed at E3.
So...first the NX gets pushed back and not gonna show, and now this? Man, this feels like a repeat of last year to me!
@Grumblevolcano,
Oh yeah, read it a second ago. The news has broken. March 2017, not what I expected!
On a positive note: Maybe we finally get a Spaceworld show again? August/September, all playable Nintendo games? We'll see!
Zelda the only [playable] game at E3, no NX shown, almost certainly no live presentation.
God, Nintendo, where did it all go so wrong?
@A01 And that is the Nintendo we love; surprising, irrational, unexpected and totally random!
Wow... Not sure I'll buy an NX at launch. Might wait tilll the next Smash and MK. Kinda sad for the Wii U. I was hoping we'd get a positive surprise either from this meeting or e3. It almost sounds like this is it for the system.
@KoopaTheGamer That's not the Nintendo I love.
@Bunkerneath i'm ok with that bc I didn't play TP or WW... So, at least from my perspective, I got three Zelda games.
QUOTE: and it will be the only playable game Nintendo presents at the show, in order to provide attendees a complete immersion.
Someone thinks that Nintendo gamers are stupid.
So either NX is also a 2017 release or Zelda is not good enough or not ready enough for the NX release this year.
I am not getting this. This game is coming to the nx too but they are going to show only the Wii u version. But it is not coming this year. It is coming as the same time as the better version. So Nintendo is going to waste all our time. And they have nothing to close the year out with.
I miss iwata. He had some misses over the years but at least you could expect him to not completely screw us over. This now has to be the best Zelda they have ever made. I know it will be good cause they delayed it two years. But if it is not i don't know.
So then: no NX reveal and Zelda U being the only playable game there? My E3 hype just dive-bombed.
@zool NX is already confirmed for March 2017 with not being shown at E3.
@Dark-Luigi they at least had more playable games last year.
Are Nintendo just insane?? No NX at E3, Zelda Wii U is the only playable game, wow! Sounds like E3 and by extension 2016 is going to riveting!
Why would Nintendo not show NX at E3?? The only reason I can fathom is that they're playing there cards close to their chest in order to be more powerful than the PS4K and have some USP. Still...
@siavm That's true. And this feels like a huge(er) step back now that you mention it.
Wii U: "And I get to tend the rabbits"!
Nintendo: (bang)
Are they crazy? So there almost no games coming besides papermario this year on wiiu? And why no nx on e3? where you going to showcase it? this is a bed start for the nx! better bring it in July 2017 so they had the hype of the e3 with them!
This must be one of the biggest games ever considering the development time.
It makes sense - you can't provide playable demos of NX games without showing off the console, but you can show the games as part of your presentation and keep the console under wraps.
And non-nintendo owners will see this, and laugh some more at them.
Nintendo needs to step up and get real. They can't afford to mess another E3 up, and if they are working on games for the NX, then what are they making for Wii U (Paper Mario, the Fire Emblem-type game and Zelda which is delayed)...what else??? Hopefully they at least have another game up their sleeve, or it's going to be another bad E3 for them, and just drive people further away from them...especially with the NX not being shown at the conference.
@the-madprofessor That's what I was hoping that they'd do...at least show off what will be made for it to keep that hype going, or it's going to get lost mighty quickly.
@Grumblevolcano and Zelda was confirmed for 2015
Seriously... Eurgh...
Omg. Here comes all the doom and gloom comments.
@Kirk I know, I was just joking around!
@MJKOP
I'm surprised people are taking Nintendo of europa seriously whit this as to me this seems like a very late april fools prank so i be taking this whit a grain of salt until e3 has happened
Nintendo, you lost a goldmine of hype by holding back footage of NX from E3. What. Are. You. Thinking?! What is wrong with you? Focusing on ONE GAME? Do you know how seriously idiotic that is? I mean give us actual possible games that the NX will have. At least reveal some that will be on the NX in the Digital Event. I want an essay on how they can justify this. They're not helping themselves right now. At all.
If most of the E3 focus is on one game that's not releasing this year, then Nintendo us going to get ridiculed three, as well as being overshadowed by their competitors.
When they're ready to reveal the NX, they will need to do it brilliantly. Nintendo has to market it well and bring it to the focus of everybody if they want it to succeed.
@A01 The hugest issue with this, BIGGER LINES. Fewer people will be able to experience it.
Nintendo, what are you on right now?
@TomJ Dude, last year was complete garbage. That Digital Event was the biggest disappointment I had ever witnessed. After a complete winner like 2014. Dude, so many great presentations.
@crimsontadpoles Am I imagining things?....didn't Reggie say last year that Nintendo's E3 focus is always ONLY on games releasing within the same year. I guess they forgot when it came to Zelda. There are other examples (Mario Maker, Wooly World?) but I can't be bothered to look it up.
I know it's Nintendo Japan calling the shots, but still. Feels a bit like they're treating us like idiots.
Oh well. At least I know to dial down my expectations.
@A01 They won't even have Sun and Moon from what it sounds like. I don't know how they're going to win back positive rep from us. This is foolish. Completely foolish.
This would seem to underline further the idea that Nintendo isn't going to make a machine to try to take share from Sony or Microsift, but rely upon existing core supporters and new growth from younger players. Use the mobile apps to appeal to the kids and then try to draw them to NX?
In any event people who expected Nintendo to make another SNES will be disappointed.
Such a wasted opportunity...
Wait what? Seriously? That's... Unexpected. Wow. Then again, I'm sure they know what they're doing.
@WireWare i'll take some with you. i'm flabergasted right now
I wish the game would stop getting delayed. I want to actually be able to play it before I go to college.
Pokémon will carry the 3ds front but for Wii U I doubt that will be any holiday game.
While I like the march 2017 release date, I'm mixed for now.
If this is true I'm done with THEM! I am very sure the Wii U version is almost complete if not done already but they just want to release it along side the NX. I do glad now that I bought the PS4 last month. If you only knew how much I wish this isn't true..... I'm a die hard Big N but they are just screwing themselves and I don't want be screwed anymore and told to enjoy it when it is UNNECESSARY! I've been laughed at for years clinging on to Nintendo for most of my life and I am 29 years old. Especially through the Wii and Wii U faze but you can't help someone or in this case a company who is literally killing themselves and forcing you to watch and be a part of it. Peace out Nintendo and I hope you don't burn to the ground and finally listen to those who have loved and appreciated you for years and in my case a life time.
As long as Zelda is there and is awesome... I am cool with it.
Nintendo's entire workforce are making this New Zelda game and has no time for anything else. They literary have nothing else good to show, so why show crap when you can hide them?
At E3 they will go, 'Think this game is good? Wait till you see the NX version!'
Even if Zelda is amazing this is a crazy move by Nintendo.
I have been saying for most of the year that LOZ was not coming until 2017. People screamed at me that I was wrong and stupid.
Well guess what? I was right. When you've only seen 90 seconds of footage from a game that was announced 2 year prior, it's no where near finished.
We'll see how it looks at E3, but I won't be surprised if I have to revise my prediction to 2018.
The NX may actually be do or die for Nintendo as a hardware company.... boy it better be good.
Wait, wait, wait! Nintendo, what in the hell are you doing!?!?!!!? No NX and only Zelda U?!? The Wii U and 3DS are dead to them it seems. I wonder what this means for games like Pokémon Sun and Moon, the DQ 3DS titles. Pokémon is Gamefreak, but those Dragon Quest titles aren't being brought over by Square. This could be a disaster for them, or maybe it'll pay off. I'm not usually this pessimistic about Nintendo, but this time...
So the corporate shake up hasn't affected the Shooting-Ourselves-In-The-Foot department then. Still going strong.
Im sure the Zelda will look great but it isnt enough. Hate to say it but im extremely underwhelmed as a whole with Nintendo. Oh well.. sigh.
I think it's understandable - why burn such a big and expensive project on Wii U when the install base is so small? Even if the NX version comes later the media today will already have made up its mind about the game by then and the impact of an NX release 4 months after the media interest in the game is dead would be a complete disaster for Nintendo (the internet bubble being upset with them because they haven't given what they wanted RIGHT NOW is a problem but it doesn't give them an immediate financial hit).
As for only Zelda being the only game they present at E3, I think that only shows what we already know - Wii U is dead and all resources have been moved to the NX.
I think that first NX direct will be very impressive since we know that Nintendo's biggest teams (the Mario Galaxy/3d World team, Retro, the Mario Kart team and the Zelda team) haven't released anything of note in at least a year.
They've not been sat at home for the last couple of years so there should be a few BIG Nintendo games in the first 6-12 months of the NX's life.
Wait, WHAT? I know that Zelda U/NX is a big deal, and I'm sure it'll be amazing, but...really!? That is literally the only thing they're focusing on? What about the NX!? What about Sun & Moon!? What about anything else!? Hell, I'll even take Color Splash! There's gotta be SOMETHING else that they can show!...Well, at least now I can avoid getting my hopes up.
Wait, WHAT? I know that Zelda U/NX is a big deal, and I'm sure it'll be amazing, but...really!? That is literally the only thing they're focusing on? What about the NX!? What about Sun & Moon!? From weird to weirder...... Nintendo better know what they're doing right now...
Everyone please don't worry, they said this is the only Nintendo game that will be playable. Obviously there will be loads of third party one's to play...
@XCWarrior Wait, what? We saw a good few minutes of footage at The Game Awards in 2014. The game then clearly had its art style nailed, it was just lacking in content.
That tablet around Link's waist has a Shiekah/Lens of Truth symbol on it. And it looks a bit like the gamepad. Might we use the gamepad screen when using this item? It could be a very central item.
The game's delay is a kick in the crown jewels, E3 sounds terrible now and NX launching in March next year is weird.
I can't believe this is what was revealed. And the NX isn't even going to be at E3! 2016 is going to be Nintendo's worst year ever.
What a disappointment.
I had such high hopes for E3....... I wouldn't be supprised if Zelda U gets pushed off E3..... I need to change my profile picture away from the hype train........
@SLIGEACH_EIRE and it looks like link is confirmed a boy
Zelda is probably my favorite game series of all time. That being said, this sounds like a pretty bad e3. Nothing but a game that comes out next year, and just showing what seems to be the weaker version if the game??
@MarioLazor : Spot on. I think Nintendo sees they can milk their current console and handheld users with recycled experiences. Total disrespect to their fan base of you ask me.
What a confusing mess of a PR strategy. This is a joke, completely and utterly.
@Ashthearcher "I need to change my profile picture away from the hype train........"
This is the train you need now.
I was quite hyped in 2014, but now i've really lost interest in this game, since all info Nintendo gives turned out wrong or really vague. At this point, i'm assuming Zelda will be released in 2020 or something, and will in no way deliver (like star fox, tennis, party, animal crossing). I've lost faith that Nintendo will produce anything noteworthy for WiiU if they don't have ANYTHING to show. hope im wrong.
For some crazy reason I think it'll still be better than last year's E3. Not that it would be difficult to top that..
If Nintendo hadn't wasted resources making a twilight princess remake I wonder if this would have come out sooner. I'm so sick and tired of these remakes and people supporting them. The NX launch seems destined to consist largely of WiiU ports.
"The Wii U version"
Which means there is more than one version.
Welp, I'm skipping this year's E3 only if they talk JUST about Zelda. This is a stupid move especially from Nintendo. If Zelda Wii U/NX's demo is somehow amazing and beyond anyone's expectations, then I guess this is ok.
they dumped all of their crap games on us in the past year they dont' have anything left in the box except a split release of zelda.
depressing to say the least.
"For complete immersion" I know 90% of that is just PR, but I also recognise that Star Fox Zero's on-floor station ruined experiences for other games. I'm wondering if sound plays a role in this next Zelda game. I don't even need huge... I'm just curious to what extent...
@getyourak Nintendo didn't spearhead that project, though. That was Tantalus
Disappointing, but ... NEW ZELDA HYPE!
I skipped Skyward Sword over its motion mechanics. I project this game will fill the void left by negative e-motion. It's curious how this is their only playable title, though. Nintendo's confidence has yet to be revealed as either based or baseless. Only time will tell.
@skywake Good point. I'm very curious to see how they will handle all of this.
After the Zedla delay, and no NX at E3, I could care less about this year.
Whoever's descision it was to do this (most likely the new CEO) needs to have their head examined. After last year's bad E3 to only follow it up with pretty much nothing this year isn't building hype. Ths is building disappointment and distrust in Nintendo's future.
Why would they put it on WiiU? I mean, many people, myself included, were expecting this, but it still is bad news. Somewhere inside, I had really hoped they showed some vision, abandon the WiiU version - to not be held back by that inferior and highly 'unique' system - and go all out with the NX development.
If I told you that Zelda was all you would see from big N at E3, you would say I'm making it up. Nah, you can't make this kinda stuff up!
odd that they chose an NX game to be the only game playable, and not have the NX version playable. Going to E3 this year seems like it would be totally pointless. Are they not going to the Treehouse thing this year either?
So first NX won't make an appearance at E3 and will be revealed later this year, than released in March 2017, not very long after being revealed.
Second, you delay Zelda, yet again, to 2017 and are making it the focus of E3, and the only playable game for attendees, a freakin game that won't release for another year, when you should be showing off something for the systems that seem to barely have any games being released!
I don't know Nintendo, your making it extremely hard to be a fan of yours these past couple years.
So...we're going to have another Direct for E3 this year?
I don't think it's time to call it a K.O. for Nintendo this year already. They might show other stuff in their direct that impress us? I'm staying optimistic
This feels like Nintendo is deliberately putting themselves in an underdog position so that their comeback will be all the more fantastic.
It also shows that they've got a LOT of confidence in how awesome the new Zelda is going to be, to make it the only playable game on the show floor.
@RantingThespian No, definitely not "most likely the new CEO" at all. It has been very well documented that Kimishima has said that he is there on an interim basis and his current task is to simply continue to execute the plans that mr. Iwata had already laid out, and those plans comprise both the NX and the new Zelda game, among other things.
Only when that trajectory has run its course, will we start to see Kimishima's own hand, that is: IF he decides to stay on, since he also said that this was still up for debate, so he might step down and let someone else take over.
He's just there to see that Iwata's plans are followed to the letter, nothing more, nothing less...
Maybe Nintendo will being back Space World for when they announce the NX
That would be pretty hype
I mean at least the lines will be short
The surprise of March 2017 changes all expectations so it's a bit shocking but really this part makes sense. E3 is the wrong week for what's left of Wii U except for Zelda. Paper Mario isn't for that audience for instance. There are presumably many games not ready to show off for a March 2017 launch and no reason to let it out of the bag in time for a response from competitors by Holiday. E3 is less and less important -and Nintendo was but by it last year. Sensible.
This is exciting, despite all the strange choices, if Nintendo goes completely insane I'm ready to go there with them lol. Honestly though, no one can predict their next move, especially nowadays. I'm no huge Zelda fan, but this approach could definitely draw in people like myself, seeing as this could replace OoT as the highest rated game of all time, considering the time, effort and emphasis they are putting on it.
"E3 formula successfully in the past two years"
In what universe would those horrific shows be called successful?
@AVahne - as you were advised last week in another comments section, please refrain from using profanity, as it's against the community rules, and persistent offenders may be subject to further action, which is always best avoided. Thanks muchly
Seems odd to showcase a game that is, more or less, guaranteed to sell and get hype no matter what. I guess the Big N doesn't have anything else up its sleeve or even has sleeves!
So after last year's E3 with no Zelda, and basically no Zelda for a whole year people complained and Nintendo decided: "Well, they want Zelda, so we will devote everything to Zelda."
Nintendo...
Unless you are releasing something during, or directly after, E3, is there really much point in making much of an effort with it? Stuff that's not releasing for another 9-12 months... it's just irrelevant until the pre-launch hype period, which should only ever need to be 6 weeks if done properly. I just don't know why they're bothering this time round, unless they have some surprises...
@the-madprofessor Link? Only footage I can remember was at E3.
@XCWarrior https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypR03D1nISA
I mean, why this one game if it is launching next year? It makes it sound like Nintendo has nothing to planned for the rest of the year which i'm sure isn't true. They should talk about the NX during the show even if it won't be playable. It needs the marketing to make it successful
RIP Nintendo. See you again when you go third party.
I'm not sure what they got going, butit seems like a direly horrible move. With the NX release window confirmed they REALLY have to get info out there. They could showcase Tokyo Mirage Sessions, the NX features and Federation Force. It's clear that they're wrapping up Wii U support so I am extremely doubtful that there could be any honest-to-God surprises at this year's E3.
They announced the 3DS at E3 2010 before releasing it in march of next year. Why can't they pull the same trick here?
I really, REALLY hope that Nintendo will do a 180 on this idea or that they will do something totally amazing and unprecedented, but there doesn't seem to be much hope for that.
I dont even know what to think about this...
I appreciate the middle finger (or whatever your guys European equivalent is) to handheld owners, I really do.
Nintendo has achieved that I don't see their event this year, because I don't want a spoilers feast. I want the game to surprise me, thanks.
Well, "only one playable game" doesn't mean that they are going to show only one game - they are probably going to show a lot more - just not in playable form. But I feel they'll focus a lot on mobile and possibly 3DS. If this year is all about Zelda...what if they announce a new Zelda on 3DS with a companion mobile app?! That's a possibility. They are really milking this Zelda cow as of late. Wouldn't be surprised if 2 years from now we all get the zelda-nausea, like it happened with 2D Super Mario Bros recently.
Nintendo is known for producing aces from the sleeve in the darkest of times...I wouldn't be surprised if this year's E3 were a massive success.
oops
It's only game playable there, that does not mean they won't talk about others in their E3 Showcase/Direct thingy.
I don't think it's a sign of weakness on Nintendo's part, it could be that E3's slowly dying as I believe Activision and EA won't be there or something as well?
Less hype for sure but wondering what future games they are gonna be showing and games playable at E3 plus Treehouse.
I guess it'll be difficult for fakers to make believable E3 rumors.
"... and it will be the only playable game Nintendo presents at the show, in order to provide attendees a complete immersion."
Look at that fluffy PR bull*hit hard at work.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
Lol, that was perfect!
I'll just say:
What the hell, Nintendo?!
Oh god, kimishima is ruining nintendo... Somebody, please fire him.
@KoopaTheGamer Ah, I see. Too subtle for me. lol
Unless they reveal new games and the Zelda demo is phenomenal, I have big doubts for this year's E3. However, Nintendo are known for crazy reveals and announcements so we just need to wait for further news.
Probably because it's the only game in development for Wii U
"Zelda U will be the only playable game Nintendo presents at the show, in order to provide attendees a complete immersion."
..............Heh heh....Eh?
!!!
@DualWielding
awwww. That's what I was going to say, but you beat me to it.
(T-T )
I swear the employees of Nintendo pay no attention to where gaming is going. The execs are running the company into the ground 'cause they either have no clue what the fans want or just don't care. I used to love Ninty but they no idea what the heck they are doing.
@WireWare I don't, because it apparently impedes your ability to effectively do your job.
I think it's fairly obvious that the NX delay has caused this, of course... but what strikes me as odd is what about Paper Mario and Federation Force? Do they not want to mention them because that would just make things worse (given that they are both unpopular with the fanbase of each series)? Are they going to be there anyway? If not, why not? Lack of confidence in either title?
Aside from that, has EVERYTHING else been moved to the NX? Because I cannot believe that Nintendo wouldn't at least have one more 3DS game in the pipeline. Wii U support ends with Star Fox Zero and Zelda, sounds about right, especially given the touching Iwata tribute in SFZ. 3DS ends with Federation Force? Really? Isn't Kirby coming out before it, even? Very odd.
What bothers me the most is what the hell is the Mario team making these days? Treasure Tracker and SSM can't just be all they've been doing since 3D World. I guess they're 100% on whatever Mario NX is. Lets hope we at least see footage.
I figure we'll hear about the NX before the year is through. But this E3 is sounding rough. At least we get to see a lot of Zelda. I guess.
@DualWielding Demonstrably false. We know at least one piece of first party shovelware is slowly floating toward the system in late 2016/early 2017. If we're lucky, we might get F-Zero Pinball or a party game for our Zelda amiibos.
How many games do they usually have since the directs? I can't think of anything on the floor last year besides Mario Maker (I think Star Fox was shown by appointment).
Still, it seems even since Iwata e3 2016 was the planned NX reveal date. Maybe this is strategic - the Wii U e3 with Nintendoland, Darksiders 2 and Lego Undercover was embarrasing.
Nintendo has disappointed me so much these last two years....This E3 I'm much more looking forward to PC and Sony exclusive games. And indies!
Yes I am looking forward to seeing more from Zelda U, but with the way that publishers show way to much of their goods, I don't want Zelda U to be spoilered. Just a minute long trailer with a few seconds of actual gameplay is more than enough for me.
I loves me some Zelda demo goodness, Nintendo. Too bad I'm still very disappointed overall in the Wii U to get too excited. Glad it's coming out, though, I bought a Wii U for Zelda U (and was counting on a real Metroid console game, but turns out that wasn't in their plans at all).
@Vriess same. Regardless of how I feel about the series lately I'm doing this game day one I don't need to see it, and after accomplishing a near-perfect media blackout of Dark Souls 3 (watched the launch trailer once) it's a great way to go for games you know you're getting.
@3MonthBeef It's a surprise because they just announced that the NX is releasing in 2017. Most people were under the impression that it would release this holiday season, making Nintendo's 2016 line-up not seem as bad as it is. After E3, the only game we have to look forward to is Color Splash, a game which most Nintendo fans could care less about. It's surprising to see Nintendo so content and open with their gaming hiatus for Wii U owners.
All I wanted was Pikmin 4 so this is a huge disappointment for me. An entire E3 presentation just on Zelda won't keep my attention. If they seriously have nothing to show for the WiiU than they should start building up hype for the NX. Do they expect to reveal the NX to the general public at the last minute and hope everyone goes gaga over it?
Today has been a terrible move by Nintendo. I've never seen a core fanbase so shaken by a single day. You've got some serious work to do Nintendo...
I have a bad feeling about this E3 :I
Lol, no one said they that wouldn't talk about or show footage of other games.
Speaking of E3, Yo-Kai Watch 2 localization please? There's not going to be a second season of the dubbed anime or merch until they release the second game outside of Japan.
Booooo on the delay. I was hoping to get it for christmas and play all day long. I love the wii u. I just wish they didn't make it hard for third parties. I love the off tv play. Nintendo please keep putting out awesome games.
@DTFaux after being a fan for over 30 years and following as closely as I do, I can tell you that I've tried to look on the bright side many, many times only to be let down and disappointed. I see nothing good from all this. As it is, Nintendo is already an underdog. The way things are right now, the best we can hope for is that current hardcore gamers adopt the NX as their second console of choice rather than not adopting it at all. Let's be realistic, there little to no chance that the NX will steal MS and Sony's fan base. The lines have already been drawn on the current console race, Nintendo is not going to catch up. If Xbox one and PS4 release updated consoles with 4K capabilities this year that will only add to Nintendo's woes. The question will be how a "new" console from Nintendo can't even match the power of a current console. I'm sad and I can tell you that nothing good will come from all this. I think it's too little too late.
It does say the "only playable". It doesn't say the only game.
can't say i'm disappointed per se... But I'm willing to bet that the decision was made because Zelda U is the only game they have.
I'm glad that we have this information now. Last year I was very excited for Nintendo's E3 and was utterly deflated afterwards. At least now I'm utterly deflated before it starts. Let's just hope that Zelda is that good. It should be by now.
Why? The only playable game is the one not coming out this year? How does that make sense? How does any of this make sense? I think it is a pretty smart business decision to release the NX or whatever in 2017, but you got to have something killer coming out in the holiday season before that. Without Zelda, there's a big gaping hole. Please don't end the incredibly underrated Wii U on such a low note. End it with a BANG!
@3MonthBeef I agree with you, people let the hype get the best of them, and that's why they are so surprised.
You have to wonder if the March release date of the new zelda and the nx is absolutely fixed or not.. I don't think it would be a disaster to release the nx around november for black friday or prior to it.. I just don't see the benefit of releasing it in March just because of a Zelda title that they are obviously holding back for months. I bet they could release the new Zelda by Oct or Nov of this year, possibly earlier. There has been a lot of turmoil within Nintendo lately especially with Iwatta's death and re-configuring their whole process of development not to mention they had so little skill with HD games it has crippled their output this gen.. It's sad but Nintendo better have something that is going to blow us away that isn't a fad like the Wii or I honestly think for the first time since the NES they will be in trouble from a brand perspective. I wish them all the best and I know one thing, they still make some of the best games on the planet!!
This pretty much describes Nintendo's hype train right now:
Stop disappointing us, Nintendo!!
No swearing. -Megumi
