The New Nintendo 3DS may not have received all that many exclusive games, but those of you who have upgraded and are in the process of playing Pokémon Sun And Moon should be feeling a little smug, as the game boots much faster on the newer console than on the original - as you can see from the video above.
This isn't the first time we've seen superior performance on the New 3DS - Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS loads quicker on the more recent console, and certain features have to be disabled on older 3DS units.
Of course, if you own an older 3DS console or a 2DS and you don't have a New 3DS console to compare then you won't notice the difference - until you've seen this video, of course. Oops.

I have an old 3DS, and yeah, it takes a while to boot (in my case, like a minute maybe?) but nothing that warrants updating.
The game's playable and far more stable than X & Y!
Well... I still use my older 3DS XL.
As long no serious delays, I can still my oldies keep going. Of course, still save some money to buy New 3DS someday...
Didn't know how slow it was since I have the new 3ds. Wow. I'm spoiled now. Couldn't deal with the delay unless I cooked up a meal or a trip to the john
As long as it doesn't happen to casual, 10mn playthrough games, it's no big deal. waiting 40s when I won't turn off the handheld for hours is not a problem.
Too bad it's a black screen and not a cute loading screen though
Slow boot, very poor performance with frame drops and times when animations flat out stop for a period.
Use a z-move? Pause. Pokémon with an aura on screen? FPS dies. More than two Pokémon on screen? FPS dies. Only two Pokémon on screen? Can still pause or stutter too.
It's a little irritating, yes, but nothing that warrants me upgrading after all this time. Honestly, I have the patience to wait ten seconds!
This implies I've played anything else since it released so I'd have booted it up enough times to notice. I don't know when I will even have the chance to find this information out at the rate I'm going!
@GloverMist But for the low, low price of $200 you too could save multiple seconds! And experience slightly faster performance in a turn-based RPG!
Jokes aside, I would be willing to grab that $100 model if I can on Black Friday. I'd love to have some portable Binding of Isaac in my life.
It's not quite a MH4U situation, but it's nice to see that the better hardware is being utilized to some extent.
Either way, it's clear why the 3DS line needs to go at this point.
Blast Processing!
this is a lot of difference. But once you've already opened that game, you just don't stop playing and tht's it (?) 3DS vs 3DSPRO
Well, far as I understood, the game primarily lags on the original 3DS during double battles, and there are some frame drops here and there overall, but whether that warrants a complete handheld upgrade or not, is arbitrary.
Personally, I'd just stick with my original 3DS XL, since that still works perfectly for most of my games, so I guess that I and others that don't feel the need to upgrade will just have to execute a little more patience when playing this game...
Here's a couple of videos on some of the speed differences:
My kids have been playing this for about 12 hours each since Friday and all they've complained about over that time is the loading screens on Lego City Undercover on Wii U. Some times I consider going to take a shower while I wait.
They wouldn't turn down a free New 3DS but they have other gifts on their lists.
Sun & Moon is a pretty great Pokémon game. I'm enjoying it much more than ORAS and all of the changes are positive so far.
What's Vanilla got to do with it? I thought you were referring to a specific colour console...
Going out of a battle also give you the black screen for a couple of seconds. And when I faced the first token pokemon my poor 3DS almost cried. Frame rate went down terribly. Still I'm not updating. Switch is too close to go that route right now.
Time for Gamefreak to learn how to code for 3DS?
Great, another reason for people to buy a New 3DS. hate comments incoming
Even the badge arcade has a noticeably different start-up time when comparing old and new 3DS consoles.
I have both, so I can continue shiny hunting on the old games with my old 3DS, while playing the new games on my New 3DS.
TBH... I'm actually glad about this, as it shows that they're working to optimise for the system with higher capabilities, rather than restricting the game to the limitations of the older system, while still maintaining functionality for it... probably wasn't easy for them to do.
I'll admit I was a tad worried there; my entire experience to be ruined due to having an older, but after looking at the comments, it's subsided, so thanks.
Just makes me glad and lucky I've got a New 3DS.
Bought a (brand new, full price) standard 3DS approximately one week before the New 3DS was announced. I wasn't particularly peeved about the exclusivity of Xenoblade (played it on Wii) or all those Snes games (again, played them on Wii). This however is a bit of a kick in the teeth.
It also lags up the bum when in double battles, especially when it is the Trial battles.
@Baker1000
When using Vanilla in this way, it is talking about the standard, original consoles.
Read some reviews complaining about performance issues but I didn't think much of it since I've already upgraded to the New 3DS and didn't usually care about these kinda things. While I still don't care much about it, I can't stand it if games take that long to boot up. Color Splash is one of the worst culprits regarding that imo. Can't say anything about Sun & Moon, though, since I still have to wait two days.
Boot times are not much of an issue, however in game loading times can be annoying.
I find it pretty funny that Nintendo refuse to make SNES games available on the old 3DS because they want emulation to run FLAWLESSLY, yet they clearly aren't bothered if retail games like Hyrule Warriors Legends and Pokemon S&M run like absolute pants.
Will do.
Getting a new 3DS this friday.
Shiny hunters definitely would upgrade because of this massive delay; it adds up every reset they do.
Dang it. Ignorance is bliss and I was so blissful until now.
Upgrading to a New 3DS this late into the lifecycle seems like a waste. If my 3DS were to break, then I would upgrade, but it doesn't seem worth it considering the 3DS is probably only going to get a few more major titles before riding off into the sunset.
@Porky Not necessarily... this is the startup time from the main menu, and it's the time it takes to go from the main menu to the game itself which takes so long (the long blank screen in the video)... shiny hunters soft reset, which doesn't return to the main menu each time, so there shouldn't be anywhere near as much of a delay.
Luckily it's not a huge deal, I suffer more from the boot time in Smash, sometimes I just wanna do a quick match and in comparison I spend as much time waiting as playing, but RPGs are mostly meant to be played for longer sessions; 40 seconds of wait every 40 minutes or more of gameplay are literally nothing XD
It's not really something I'd be willing to pay around €200 to fix. Especially with the 3DS nearing the end of it's lifespan.
At least we shouldn't have this problem with the Switch.
The difference is clearly noticeable, but I'm a patient person. There's nothing wrong with my standard red 3DS, so it'll still be a bit before I upgrade (if at all).
I would like to upgrade at some point just to ensure I have a few more decent years with my 3DS library, but I don't feel like the time is quite right.
@DragonEleven
I don't see where your coming from.. I have a copy of a Pokemon game on-hand right now to see if you're correct and every method I try resetting, the 3ds exits the game into the home menu and I have to launch it from the menu. There's no way I am finding to reset from game, directly to the title screen.
@Porky L + R + START
@RainbowGazelle Okay.
Thats a bummer but i kind of got used to long loading times with smash 3ds. As long as most of the game runs nicely i will still enjoy it.
I don't mind too much but wouldn't upgrade to a new model with the Switch out so soon anyway.
The game (Moon) plays fine for me. Its a bit slow in parts. But not a deal breaker. The me before 2011 (pre-married life) would have definitely felt the pressure in dropping some money to upgrade to a New 3DS. Now post two children, I've learned that I don't need to upgrade to every new device if I don't have to and get all I can out of the one's I have
@Luna_110 more stable? The game chugs on the old 3DS.
the new 3ds is way better of course
@LeRaposa
More stable than X & Y. It may be due to the lack of 3DS, but I haven't had any of the problems I had with X&Y while playing S&M. In X&Y the battle animations were terrible.
No need to spend an extra $200 upgrading still loving my original XL
For $200 I can buy 5 3DS games
People can say, "Just be patient," but when you start using multiplayer features and going online to interact with others, those with older 3DS models are going to hold everyone back. This is irritating at best, and session quit/player boot worthy at worst. This discrepancy is going to majorly affect online battles in particular.
I appreciate that Nintendo went the Gold/Silver route on this one, instead of requiring an upgrade, like the Game Boy Color that was needed for Crystal. However, even with Gold/Silver, certain features (e.g. Mystery Gift) were locked into use for the GBC hardware. It almost feels that way here, with the New 3DS being needed for a smooth multiplayer experience. Users of older models will surely be ostracized online.
Well, I'll be jumping for the $100 Best Buy deal if possible. I won't be getting a Sandwitch at lunch (or maybe not even at dinner), so a regular New 3DS will be just fine for some time.
Well if I buy a New 3DS, I won't be able to afford a Nintendo Switch. Great timing Nintendo.
@kickerofelves To be fair, the original 3DS is really bad at emulating more demanding SNES titles like Donkey Kong Country, Star Fox, Star Ocean, etc. It pretty much could only handle the earlier titles that don't use too much Mode 7 or extra processing chips, like Super Mario World.
But yeah, the hypocrisy of the official line of reasoning is pretty amusing.
These loading times are no big deal for me.
@PlywoodStick That's fair enough, I hadn't realized the 3DS was that weak, I always presumed you could run snes games on a potato
Hardware revisions of this nature make me uneasy though. Will it be worth buying the Switch at launch if the 'Switch Pro' is likely to turn up a couple of years down the line with better performance and a pile of exclusive content? The main advantage consoles used to have over PC was that whatever games you bought were guaranteed to be optimized for the system.
@kickerofelves A Sandwitch Pro? Well, the graphics ARE powered by NVIDIA, which is (in)famous for their frequent hardware update schedule... So it may yet happen.
This is why the New 3DS was made. Despite the obviously-whipped-up-in-ten-seconds name, it's definitely a necessary upgrade nowadays, especially with the built-in amiibo support and beefed up... well, everything.
@kickerofelves I wouldn't worry too much about a Switch Pro. Nintendo doesn't usually do that for home consoles, and since the Switch will presumably have the price of a home console, they probably won't make a revision.
