According to new data found in the 3DS eShop server, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga DX could be making its way to the handheld for a surprise re-release / remaster. This information comes from "well known" hacker @SciresM who has previous history with id information confirming The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's code ahead of time. The hacker tweeted the eShop listing along with the id for Ever Oasis, fueling both excitement and speculation.
Superstar Saga originally released on the Game Boy Advance back in 2003, taking the Mario Bros out of the Mushroom Kingdom to the colourful land of the Beanbean Kingdom. Here the brothers must try to defeat the wicked Cackletta and her formidable sidekick Fawful after they steal Princess Peach's voice. The GBA title was the first in the Mario & Luigi RPG series and was very much the catalyst for its success.
No further evidence has been shown so it would be acceptable to take this information tentatively. This would be an unexpected release by Nintendo, however knowing the company this is not outwith the realms of possibility, especially as it's evidently committed to maintaining interest in the 3DS.
What do you think to this rumour? Could we see the original Mario & Luigi outing get a jazzed up 'DX' release on the 3DS eShop?

The 3DS will finally get a good Mario & Luigi game!
Would love for this to be true. One of my all time favorite games and it would be a great opportunity to do a run of the entire series.
This is arguably the best entry in an amazing franchise - with the best Bros. attacks. I played this so much on the GameBoy Advance, but if new content came through, I wouldn't be opposed to picking it up.
Woah, this came out of nowhere
I don't think I'd buy it as I still have my cart and GBA SP and I revisit it from time to time, but I'd be glad to see it remade if only for those who haven't played it at the time.
It's just such a good a game...one of my all-time faves actually (and yeah, it's better than those who came afterwards).
I enjoyed Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga a lot. My favorite game in the entire series. Although if it gets a re-release/remake, I hope it considers Switch as well since it will be perfect for it too.
Nintendo weren't kidding when they said that they're maintaining support for the 3DS.
Ah, yes. My favorite Mario & Luigi game getting remastered and it'd definitely be a surprise if this rumor ended up being true. I hope this remake keeps the Bros Attacks intact because as good as the Bros Items were in the later entries, they got repetitive to use at times and their novelty wore off for me.
@MarcelRguez Dream Team and Paper Jam are good, despite their flaws. Although they don't peak to the awesomeness as Superstar Saga in my opinion, I personally enjoyed them more than its DS entries (especially Partners in Time. Ugh. Disappointing game for me).
Any more out of left field news or rumors for this week?
That said, I've never played any of the Mario & Luigi series. Judging by the comments though, it seems like I need to give this one a look.
I would love a remake or rather a remaster of the original Mario and Luigi game. And hey, if they are showing interest in remaking the original Mario and Luigi game, then perhaps there's hope for a Paper Mario Thousand Year Door remaster as well.
Hmmm, don't know if it's really coming yet...
Would make more sense to just release GBA games on 3DS, but at least they picked one of the best gba games to remake. Hopefully they don't add hours of tutorials like the recent games have had.
Seeing DX games from the GBA shows that maybe they will bring other GBA games back? Because some people never got the Ambassador only GBA games.
That would be SO cool, I'd buy it in an instant.
ooooooooooohhhhhh my word. I would buy the moment it is announced. I love this series. I haven't got to play SS all the way through, and this would enable me to do so on 3DS!
Double dipping an rpg is hard due to time and all that... but if anyone hasn't played or beaten this gem, go for it. Then get the two DS games because 3ds is backwards compatible... and then you'll be hooked enough to get the 3ds ones which aren't as good but are still fun.
Also this game being re released will continue to prove Nintendo can still use mario rpg characters if they want.
And if they let you play as an alternate party as bonus content (Peasley and Fawful forced to work together, another Bowser side story? E. Gadd and toadsworth?) I would immediately take back what I said and double dip.
If there's enough new stuff they add to it, like...maybe optional secret bosses, like in KH, that you can take on as an extra bonus. Maybe the re-add the cut character cameos from E. Gadd's attention-hogging in the coffee shop. Otherwise, I still own the physical cart, and while it is indeed one of my favorite games, I wouldn't re-buy it unless it's in 3D, or there's new bosses or something.
I'd like a Wario Land 4 remake if they're not going to make new Wario platformers
"I heard a rumour...
They said if that game for 3DS e-shop..."
I Heard a Rumour - Bananarama
I hope this is true, I still love the original Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga. Hopefully they put that one on the Wii U eShop soon too.
I guess with this, you'll be able to play the whole series on 3DS through this download (Assuming its download only), DS backwards compatibility through the carts, and the 3DS games.
Thought its another project that could easily be put on the Switch as well.....
Ooo, that'd be cool! I've wanted to play this for awhile.
I'd prefer Bowser's Inside Story, as that simply has to be the best RPG I've ever played.
But I guess a Superstar Saga remake or remaster is cool.
@MarcelRguez Dream Team, the best of the series so far, is on 3DS. But of course you know that, right?
Wait, did I miss something ? How does he know it would be on 3DS and not on the switch ?
@Dan_the_Munch_78 If Nintendo has found a way to properly emulate GBA games on 3DS.
@Vee_Flames There's nothing wrong with BIS as it is though, and it is fully playable on every 3DS out there already. The only title in the sub-series that can't be played on the handheld today is Superstar Saga, so it makes sense to remake that one. Soon we might have all five of the games on one single platform, and that is awesome!
They should put DS games on the 3DS eShop.
@NicolausCamp You have a point.
You know what will be best for everyone? If they remade the first three games in the series!
I also hope there's going to be a M&L game on the Switch... a single screen Mario and Luigi game has been done before, so...
@retro_player_22 it's on the European Wii U Virtual Console so it's not out of the question it appearing elsewhere.
@StephenYap3 Eh, guess I have higher standards as far as M&L is concerned. Agree about PiT, though.
@cowntsikin Not even close, in my opinion. A distant third best, maybe.
Omg yes
GBA virtual console would make more sense surely?
ive said all along that Nintendo kept gba and ds games off the 3ds for a reason and this rumor seems to indicate that we may get remasters of the most popular ds games and a few gba remasters.
At least it'd be a remake of an already great Mario RPG (back when those were actually a thing and not just NSMB in rpg form). Hope they don't suck away that much, or even any, charm from this classic like they did with the latest M&L releases.
@Sinton They really should. Most of the DS games aren't even that big in terms of disk usage, so it would work out nicely. Don't know why this hasn't been done. Nintendo did start selling digital Wii games on the Wii U, and that should be pretty much the same principle...
@neufel Well, Ever Oasis was mentioned in the post as well so it's safe to assume he's been digging through the 3DS eShop, I suppose.
@GoldenGamer88 Ah yes that makes some sense. Thanks
For the record, this is the same way Twilight Princess HD was leaked.
@Pluto14 Exactly.
YES. Add heal blocks on the overworld and a boss rematch system and we're kind of done.
HYPE!! I love that game, I played it when I was younger! I hope they'll remaster the music properly!
@cowntsikin
Run them as DS games.
Simple.
Hell yeah! I'd buy it in a heartbeat!
I saw this rumor last night. I believe it. Nintendo wants to keep supporting the 3DS but without taking away too much of their game development resources from the Switch. What better way to do that then by remaking a classic game using preexisting assets from Dream Team and Paper Jam? They have already shown signs of scaled-back development with games such as Mario Party Star Rush, Mario Sports Superstars, Fire Emblem Echoes, and Yoshi and Poochy's Wooly World.
In short, Nintendo is going to keep supporting the 3DS. However, if you want the next big game instead of just localisations, remakes, and games with recycled content, then pick up a Switch.
@MarcelRguez I think that Dream Team was pretty good though. It had a slow start (worst tutorial of the series) and dialogue that wasn't always interesting (repeating the same thing over and over again) but it had enough fun moments that it made me play it until the end. I can't actually point out the weakest game in the series. I haven't played Paper Jam though, wasn't interested in that one
Bowser Inside story is still the best.
The whole concept of playing the game simultaneously with 2 screens (the top screen with Bowser and the bottom screen with Mario and Luigi inside his body) is the most innovative design Nintendo has ever came up with.
If you're bored of playing bowser, you can swallow the enemies and let Mario and Luigi take them out inside his belly. No other RPG lets you play 2 games at once on 2 screens like that.
I'm throwing money at my 3DS but nothing's happening!
@G-Boy
With some quality-of-life changes as well, hopefully.
The extra stuff they're adding to Crash Bandicoot N-Sane Trilogy adds a lot of replayability to the first two games. I wouldn't mind some extra stuff thrown in the mix for good measure.
Even healing blocks, more warp pipes and a boss rematch system would be enough for me. When all that's left after the credits is the Yoshi audience, it gets kind of depressing.
I bet you guys anything that they'll charge more for this game than a pawn store would for the physical copy.
Wouldn't mind a remake of this game, hopefully the music will be remade as well. (music isn't bad, but a full soundtrack remake would be epic)
Oh boy, Super Star Saga with 110% more unskipable tutorials ?
Cant wait !
@Vee_Flames Bowser's Inside Story is my close second, but I love Superstar Saga. I'd take either as a remake! Though I wish it was for the Switch, personally.
This is perfect. Exactly the kind of support to keep 3DS going without draining significant resources.
Ports and remakes can be contracted out, and even if they're not (like Fire Emblem Echoes) they're quick, relatively easy projects with a large ROI (IS has a new Fire Emblem coming to Switch and still managed to pump out this Gaiden remake).
And, just because a game is a port or remake, doesn't make it any less fun or worse a game. Some of the best games ever released have fallen into one of those categories.
I'd love to see the game with the 3DS Mario & Luigi graphical style. Also a harder difficulty mode would be nice considering this one is quite a bit easier than Paper Jam.
Put it on the Switch!!
@Shugo
Dont confuse "well known" with "well known to message board dwelling internet fanatics".
Show a little respect. To people who dont know every single gossip girl.
I adore this game, but don't feel the need of a remake. Great for people who haven't played it, but I wouldn't buy it
Bowser's Inside Story will always be my favorite Mario & Luigi game, but I never tried Superstar Saga. Hope this rumor comes to light!
When I was a kid and asked for a Gameboy, my parents would say "You'll play for a day and never touch it again". Thats why now these rereleases from the Gameboy era are so amazing for me in particular.
Hope it turns out to be true!
Cool if true, I guess? But for me I only hope it means that they're opening the gates on other, better GBA games. Zero interest in this.
Maybe we'll finally able to buy GBA games on the 3DS? More Fire Emblem and Golden Sun on the go!
At this rate I'll be selling my WiiU it's gonna be obssolete.
One of my all-time favorites. I actually really miss the sprites from the older games in the series; the graphical style in Dream Team and Paper Jam isn't terrible, but I'd rather see cleaner sprites again--or something that closely resembles the concept art at the top of this article; if this series ever comes to Switch, it would be beautiful if stylized like that concept art.
If this is true I wonder what would make it 'DX'? I have great memories playing this game on my GBA
And Chateau de Chucklehuck was my favourite area!
@Pluto14 If you like the others, you might as well get Dream Team. It's very much more of the same. The only real change I can remember were the papercraft battles.
I don't know how to feel about this. I love this game, but I already have it. Then again, I want to support Mario RPGs that are more creative than all-Toads all-the-time.
My favorite of the Series is Superstar Saga, followed by Partners in Time in second and Dream Team in third. I like the Bowser segments of Bowser's Inside Story, but I found the Mario & Luigi segments and the general story bland.
I already have it on the Wii U, so I'll need to wait and see what they add to this DX version to see if it will be worth double dipping.
Just when I was thinking of replaying this, this sounds awesome.
Hoping for new content/areas!
Last gen remasters why?
Oh man that would be amazing! Superstar Saga is one of my childhood favorites that I still play through on a yearly basis. I would love to see it remade in some form!
I played this on Wii u VC last year and was blown away, great game! I was hooked for 3 weeks and couldn't put it down😁
I love this game!
Will buy this day one if true. Haven't played this since the Gba version. Would also love
a Switch release and physical versions on both. Looking forward to finding out if the rumored Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is gonna be announced soon.
From this point on, ALL rumours need to stop!
We are now in the run up to E3.
Let E3 have it's surprizes!
The Last few E3s have been completely spoiled!
Let's not have that crap again!
If they can do SNES games on the new 2DS/3DS, they can probably do GBA games too.
They should take this chance and start releasing that library for the handheld. It will definitely give it new life!
@Vee_Flames The Mario & Luigi: Superstars Inside Time Collection. Only for Nintendo Switch. I love this idea.
@marandahir
We do have GBA games on the 3DS.
Hell we had it on the original 3DS!
OMG, Superstar Saga is one of my all-time favorite games. I just started replaying it 2 months ago, only to drop it when BotW was released!
@MarcelRguez
Haven't played Paper Jam yet, but I actually found Dream Team Bros to be quite a solid experience.
@cowntsikin I personally find Bowser's Inside Story way better than DTB, honestly.
@Shugo
They really dont owe him anything. And you idolising him is just a little bit creepy.
Any rumor is just that, a rumor. No matter the source.
This game is a solid RPG. I would've preferred Super Mario RPG, but I'll take this.
I loved all this games - very much up for a remake in the newer engine
@Tyranexx you deserve to play some games from this great series. It's one of my all time favorite series, along with Mario kart.
@Ras sorry I laughed when I saw your comment. Just the mistake was kinda funny to me for some reason
@SniffitisWhiffit
But not Paper Jam!
And keep mind that, great as the series is, it is still crap compared to the great Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars!
@SniffitisWhiffit I reread my comment a couple of times and didn't see a mistake.
@SniffitisWhiffit: I plan to try out this series once I get through some of my backlog. It's oversaturated with RPGs right now.
@Gold_Ranger
Only for 3DSes purchased during the original launch window, and they play as if it was a DS booting a GBA cart from the dongle slot.
That is to say, I want GBA VC on new Nintendo 3DS and new Nintendo 2DS. If they can VC SNES, they can VC GBA.
@marandahir yup. And I am a 3DS ambassador!
yay I'm so excited
