It's hard to remember life before sophisticated digital cameras were bundled into a small slab of very thin microchips we carry around with us at all times, but it definitely happened.
Back in 1998 most of us were taking photos on good old fashioned 35mm film and just hoping for the best when we took them to get dunked in chemicals and made real. Digital cameras did exist, and were very basic, but devices such as the Game Boy Camera offered quite a bit of fun for those who were prepared to work around the limitations of a 0.016 megapixels in four delicious shades of grey.
Reddit user HardSleeper shows us that, with the right planning, the Game Boy Camera can take some quite impressive photos, despite its obvious limitations. He did cheat a bit and use a clip on smartphone lens, but the results are so impressive we're more than willing to overlook the use of a new-fangled technological attachment.
Take a look at some of his best shots:
And here's his humble setup in action:

I love things like this. Awesome idea and the pictures look great!
I hate things like this. It is an awful idea and I am not surprised how crappy they came out.
'sokay. it also shows just how far we have to go in making believable graphics. even with only stills, 8 bit monochrome, and low-resolution, the images are believably real. with hdr, and 4k, we can still tell when animation is cg.
@setezerocinco you my friend are wrong.
This is great, especially as i have that same gameboy color at home.
Also, the lense set up on it is a great idea
@setezerocinco really???... This is cooland they ain't that bad just a retro style
@setezerocinco @Bunkerneath I'm torn between which 2D Link to agree with...is there a Breath Of The Wild Link that can settle this?
Reminds me of the time I actually watched F1 with a passion, sadly those times are long gone...
@Shiryu I hear ya man, F1 is just bragging rights for spoiled rich kids now. Total disgrace.
If the drivers are all that good, why not give them all the same car and see who's really best?
Or, Give the teams all the same rules and budget cap (a modest one) and see which complete team can come out on top. Now that would be fun to watch!
@Shiryu for sure. After Senna died in '94 I completely lost the interest. Tried some other times when Felipe Massa went to Ferrari or the big Show provided by Schumacher, but nowadays there is no reason to watch it anymore...
@setezerocinco Exactly! F1 was "indoctrinated" on my by my father, because I always wanted to use the Tv to play Zx Spectrum, Amiga or SNES but I could not when the GPs were on. I was watching the live transmission when Senna's car disintegrated in Imola. I believe that was the very first time I saw someone die on live television... and I kinda stopped following after that. Same thing with Wrestling after Chris Benoit.
Video System's F-1 Grand Prix would be an incredible HAMSTER release and it would even support TATE mode on the Switch. it will never happen due to licensing, but at least I can still play the SNES version and I will always have this T-Square fantastic album.
@Lordplops We need the Links to duke it out in an arena... Or an F1 race track.
That's cool. But how about this guy running a Switch through a Sony Watchman?
I love what people can come up with using older hardware and the results they yield...kind of like Nintendo's philosophy to hardware.
Love it. Next step: Codies bring F1 2018 to Switch. Moto GP are bringing their game. F1 can do the same
@setezerocinco Who hurt u
Maybe the next article can be about using carrier pigeons or semaphore to communicate, instead of modern cell phones...you know, just for that "retro vibe"?
I think it would be really cool if someone made a game that looked like how it looks when looking into real life with the Gameboy camera. That many many shades of grey Photo-realistic pixel style ...err something.
Anyway, I miss my Gameboy camera. I used to make my own point and click adventures with that hot spot feature.
i have taken higher quality images from the gameboy camera. of course then the gameboy camera is more for taking close up pictures and not those nice telephoto pictures.
unlike him, i do not have a lens adapter for the gameboy camera; which is a must have.... i hope that nintendo makes an update for the nintendo 3DS so that it can be used with the gameboy printer....
Smile! You're on Game Boy Camera!
Oh, that El Snappo board is exactly what I need to export my Game Boy Camera photos! I've been after such a solution for years! Just ordered one!!!
Now I want a GameBoy.
What I learned after reading internet opinions such as comment 1 and 3, and making an average.
I'm supposed to be quite indifferent about things like this. It's some sort of idea apparently, and it turned out mediocre.
These are awesome, I'm a big fan of low-fi photography. May attempt this for a photo shoot one day
@setezerocinco
im also not surprised how crappy your comment was 🤣😂
@Lone_Beagle Hmm yes because those things are related to Nintendo and you're totally getting the point here.
I know for a fact that if I had of had the camera attachment for my gameboy colour when I was a kid I would of loved it thinking that the photo's were amazing, while probably trying to show them to my parents while the feigned how impressed they were.
I remember when my parents finally replaced their old film camera with a digital camera. It was a monster 400 dollar beast that my parents showed off to all the extended family. And to be fair, it was a really nice camera for the time. But when I entered college years later and picked up a 40 dollar camera from the same company that took pictures with almost double the quality it was amusing to see my parents just say "oh".
That "oh" said it all. XD
Very nice
Those look really cool! I mean anyone can go and take hi quality pics with a DSLR but not everyone does this. Very artistic.
