Back in the '90s when micro-transactions were nowhere to be seen, cheat codes reigned supreme. All you had to do was input a code and you became unstoppable - no monetary transactions required, just a series of button presses. When you think of all the cool games during this era, one of them might be Sonic the Hedgehog.
It turns out Sonic Mania is channeling yesteryear, with our friends at PushSquare reporting a number of cheat codes have been unearthed for the nostalgia-fuelled game. To access the codes, you'll need to enter Mania Mode, enable the Debug Mode from the options section, hold Y as you select the 'No Save' option, and then go to the Sound Test to input the following codes:
- 3 3 3 1 9 7 9 0 8 1 1 – Changes all animals into Squirrels
- 4 1 2 6 – All Emeralds
- 1 9 9 2 1 1 2 4 – Infinite Continues
- 2 0 1 8 0 6 2 3 – Force Encore Mode
- 1 9 8 9 0 5 0 1 – Unknown
- 2 0 1 7 0 8 1 5 – Super Sonic Flight in normal levels (Don’t need to be Super to trigger it)
- 9 0 0 1 – Max Control For Sonic (Drop Dash, Super Peel Out, Insta-Shield)
- 0 0 0 0 6 2 1 4 – Disable Super Music
Upon entering a code correctly you'll hear a chime. It appears the cheat codes only work with the 'No Save' option.
Tell us in the comments if you intend to make use of these Sonic Mania cheat codes.

Why is the disable super sonic music thing a "cheat code"?
Should've been a regular option tbh.
edit: whoops forgot to specify that it was the music that gets disabled
The Super Sonic flight code (20170815) references Sonic Mania's release date! August 15, 2017
(2017-08-15)
I loved this with Shovel Knight and I'm sure I will love playing around with them in Mania too. Reminds me of my 16 bit days as a kid and how I thought I knew some kind of cool secret when I finally figured them out for whatever game.
Oh Shoot! A company that remembers cheat codes verus microtransactions! Shocking right, yall!
Good old SEGA
I was kinda sad when I found out that the stages to get supersonic would be even harder in encore mode. Really happy to hear that I can just cheat! It’s a fun game but I don’t want to grind to get all the emeralds. (I’m not good at them to begin with!)
"Cheat Codes"?! Goodness how long has it been since I heard anyone talk about those!?
I remember abusing the heck out of cheats in the GTA games back in the day. My parents wouldn't let my play them but my old cousins had them, so I would simply not mention what video games I was playing with them when I went to visit. lol
I had no idea Sonic Mania had cheat codes.
It sure reminds me of the days when I used to play the GBA and trying to figure out the cheats codes my selfX)
Yeah anyway, i'll be trying them out:)
Wonder what the unknown code does. Ironicaly this article pops as I beat Encore mode (without all the Emeralds... yet.)
Sweet! A rarity this day and age.
"9001"🤔
19, 65, 9, 17... 4,1,2,6
Yes! I'll definitely play Sonic Mania again if I can get unlimited continues - otherwise I'm stuck in the game, and have no desire to continue failing in the same spot (which is an embarrassingly early level)
@Toshiro_Baloney gotta love some Sonic 2 Super Sonic 😉
@EightBitMan Yeah, but I can't figure out what August 11, 1979 has to do with anything.
These cheats seem really complicated to enable.
Super Sonic Flight does nothing for me. What is it supposed to do?
Edit: Ignore the brackets, you do need to be Super Sonic.
Well it's a long time since I've seen an article about cheat codes. Nice to see someone still giving them some love. I remember back in the day if really stuck in a game sometimes a cheat would be a life saver (before you judge I was only a kid). Even better were cheat codes you had to unlock by being really good that would then do goofy stuff that allowed you to just fool about in the game.
You cannot get to this unless you get a ton of silver medals from the bonus stages. So if you wanted infinite continues because you a re a normal person that sucks at games like this, then you are bang out of luck. Holding Y and B to get to debug mode was removed in an earlier patch.
Up down left right hold A and press start.
More games need to do this. Just turn off achievements for save files with a cheat activated. Maybe disable any ranked multiplayer mode if a cheat is activated too.
I'm surprised the Max Control For Sonic code is 9 0 0 1, and the All Emeralds Code isn't, considering the level of power it gives you
@Super_Smash_Lad These were just added in the Encore Mode update. You don't need to own Encore mode to use them, you just need to download the newest update.
@Redax You need 16 Medals from the Blue Sphere Bonus Stages, so completing the stage. Doesn't need to be a gold medal for Perfect. Make sure to give it a try every checkpoint you pass with 25 rings.
@G-Boy These are just as complicated as the cheat codes in Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Mania is continuing their traditions.
@Knuckles Oh yeah, to be honest, I haven't even played Sonic Mania Plus yet(I do have the game). I've just been busy with the other new games I got:) Sorry Knuckles:/
You've always been my favourite Sonic character...don't tell Sonic though:/
Reusing two dates/codes from sonic 2 is a nice touch too.
