Last week, The Legend of Zelda concert began in Japan, showcasing a live music performance based on the long-running Nintendo series. At an event like this, you naturally wouldn't expect much in the way of announcements, but according to reports, Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma teased The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword would be soaring onto the Switch.
This happened when Aonuma responded to the people who had attended the event and posted on social media. Here's what he reportedly had to say:
"We know what you are thinking, Skyward Sword on Switch, right?"
The audience apparently gave a huge cheer to his response.
In recent years, Nintendo has re-released classic 3D Zelda titles on newer systems. So far we've seen Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask on 3DS, followed by Wind Waker and Twilight Princess on Wii U. Skyward Sword could easily work on the Switch with the Joy-Con controllers.
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword was originally released on the Wii in 2011 and was the second Zelda title on the platform following Twilight Princess. While it received a mostly positive reception at the time, the game wasn't as widely praised as certain other entries in the series and not everyone was fond of its excessive use of motion controls.
What do you make of this? Would you like to see Skyward Sword on Switch? Tell us below.

Looking forward to seeing how badly they are going to botch the graphics on this one.
Really though. It should be nice to have this around, it's a very pretty game, and one that not all too many got to play.
Just remove the forced motion controls and you'll have a sell.
I suppose the motion controls would translate well to the joy-cons, so this seems like a good business move overall. I hope we'll see some new content paired along with it.
I would love to see Skyward Sword in HD.
Both Hyrule Warriors & Smash 4 made Skyloft look excellent!
I'd be down for this. It's been a long time since I've played Skyward Sword.
I liked the motion controls. Probably because it was so different.
I'd be all over this, as Skyward Sword is one of my favorite 3D Zeldas. I'd still love to see them bring over Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD too.
@Pod which one have they botched the graphics on in the past thatwould make you think theyde do it to this one?
Not sure if I'd be interested or not to be honest. I never played it the first time around because I was busy with college, but I'm mixed on the motion controls.
@Kalmaro sadly the switch has the joycons which means we will probably see them return in some form. there were quite a few mechanics and puzzles that relied a lot on them for them to port it without them. the alternative is remaking vast portions of the game.
This is both expected news and REALLY exciting news. SS is the last 3D Zelda game without a remaster, so it was obviously inevitable.
My one big request: make motion controls optional. That's all I want and I'm 100% in.
I would love it Skyward Sword is one of my top five favorites from the Zelda franchise and it would be amazing to see and play in HD it is such a beautiful game and Link's Loftwing would make a phenomenal addition to my amiibo collection come on Nintendo make it happen .., I have to say the story in Skyward Sword is also one of my favorite and the dungeons are fantastic. I read a couple of the comments and I can say I honestly thought the motion controls were just fine and fun and I think people would be surprised at what a fun game this is even with motion controls and just how well they fit the game, the main thing being how accurate your sword strikes are which I for one thought it was a great feeling when playing to control your sword the way you can in Skyward Sword its awesome to tilt your hand and to see Links hand tilt the same direction in the game ., man I seriously hope this is coming to Switch now I really want to play it again.
@companyoflosers sigh
I'm curious as to how this is going to play in handheld. Could be TV and tabletop only.
@Rohanrocks88 The World Ends With You
I’m normally fine with what NintendoLife does but that title was very clickbaitey. At least on mobile it’s only tagged as rumored and the main title is bigger and in bold so I didn’t see rumor at first. Don’t do that to my heart!
Allow us to play with the Pro Controller and you've got a deal. Skyward Sword will finally be the perfect Zelda it was meant to be.
Could use gyro for aiming and pointing, but also provide button controls used in conjunction, with the right analog providing optional sword swipes in various directions. For portable they could use that same button control scheme with the analog for motion swipes, and offer touch in handheld as the optional counterpart to gyro in console mode.
I’d be down. I saw a lot of comments on another site being mostly negative about Skyward Sword and not even wanting this. It was one of my favorite new Zelda games. Sure, it has it’s problems, but I enjoyed every bit of it. I also had zero problems with the motion controls. I got so into them, and used to them, that I couldn’t imagine going back to a traditional control scheme (at the time.) It looks awful in it’s downloaded form on my Wii U. Not sure if the disc version was better quality or if newer games spoiled me... either way. Let’s let the Groose loose onto the Switch!
This is one of the only mainline Zeldas that I've never finished. As much as I liked the music and the watercolor graphics (and the story itself), the pacing was abhorrent, and the controls were severely pretty awful. And this is coming from someone who generally likes motion controls.
If they would clean up the motions controls a bit (or at least offer the option of using the Pro Controller), and dial back some of the hand holding, I think I would be interested in giving it another go.
I’d pick it up. Didn’t even like it a whole lot. As long as they fix Fi
Count me in if it comes to be. I'd love to play through Skyward Sword on Switch.
I would love this to happen. I have it on Wii and Wii U but never passed the first dungeon ....
Aside from the motion controls I believe many hate on it for the linearity too. Might give it a shot, but might just pick it up from the Wii U eshop or 2nd hand for cheap instead.
@Pod It was originally developed in HD, pretty simple transition, no one knows what you're talking about.
I would be in heaven. This is one of the couple zelda games I've never played. The switch deserves just as many zelda games as the Wii u if not more so bring it over
Though it is my least favorite Zelda game of all time, I would love to try it again while waiting for the next true Zelda for Switch.
Keep it locked in the Disney vault Aonuma. That game wasn’t great (though I played through it in its entirety). I’d let it ferment a while longer.
Maybe it's just me but 'I can't wait to see it in HD' has never done anything for me. Skyward Sword looks fantastic as it is but really, it's not about the graphics and having more pixels isn't going to keep you playing if the gameplay sucks.
I guess I am saying. If the only reason you want it on a modern console is because you 'want to see it in HD' then you should just look at screenshots and save your money.
Skyward Sword would look great in full HD, as there was bad pixelization on the Wii which spoiled the watercolour esthetic.
The controls were fine though, in fact its one of the best motion controlled games of its generation.
Hmmmm... I wonder how this game will function in handheld mode, if it is indeed ported to the Switch???
I can see some kind of Zelda 3d collection on switch at some point. Like they did with the GameCube.
Yes please !!!! loved this game and would definitely buy it again.
@Gingerboaby83 They did that to promote The Wind Waker and the Gamecube wasn't exactly flying off of shelves. Won't happen here.
This was the only Zelda title I never played on a console. I’d love to try it.
I would like to see a brand new Zelda game instead.
Even if it's like the "Majora's Mask" kinda of game. (Reused assets from the previous game.)
I don't know, even a game that we play as Sheik. That would be awesome, anything new would be welcome. Just my opinion though, at least a lot of people are excited for those Re-releases.
I don’t know why Nintendo wouldn’t do this (same goes for Galaxy 1&2 HD)
@Kalmaro I think they’d have to make motion controls optional in order to make it work in handheld mode, though I’d personally prefer to play it with motion controls.
I freaking love Skyward Sword. The characters have more depth than any other Zelda title to date imo since the relationships actual go somewhere. To me it's one of the only Zelda games where Link and Zelda dont feel like just hollow puppets.
And I absolutely loved the motion controls. Wouldn't buy if they chopped them out (no pun intended) since I already own it on Wii.
I'd be up it, be interesting to see what Nintendo or whoever they get to do the port do with the game.
I really like Zelda games.
I really dislike Skyward Sword.
I hope that Nintendo doesn't waste resources on porting this game. I actually thought the motion controls were somewhat enjoyable, but in terms of game design, it is an amazingly bad game that has a long list of flaws.
The fight with Demise is amazing though. Probably my favorite boss from any Zelda game.
@roboshort Super Mario Party set the stage for 1st party games not having to work in handheld mode, a Skyward Sword remaster may do the same thing.
I literally had just told my brother a few days ago that I hoped they'd make Skyward Sword for the Switch, since the joy-cons would be perfect for it (in response to him wishing for the Metroid Prime Trilogy, for the same reason). So it sounds great to me.
Skyward Sword is in my top 5 Zelda games primarily because of the sword motion controls - the same controls that make so many dislike the game. So although I look forward to using the motion controls via the joy-cons, I do hope they find a way to include a standard control option, so as not to alienate so many.
I can see them implementing some HD Rumble features to accompany some slightly better motion controls. Still a good entry in the series, but doesn't make my top 10 list
Skyward Sword is the only 3D Zelda title I've yet to play, so I'd definitely welcome a Switch port/remaster (along with ports of the Wind Waker and Twilight Princess HD remasters).
@WaffleKnight So far, the Zelda remakes have all added something, whether it's a Master Quest/Hero Mode, a survival dungeon, Miiverse integration, or general improvements to the original game. I doubt Skyward Sword will be any different. I at least expect materials to only be explained once per playthrough, not per session.
@Grumblevolcano
Super Mario Party didn’t set the stage for anything. 1-2 Switch was the same way, because both games are party games and depend on multiple uses of the controllers and tablet. Skyward Sword is not a party game that physically cannot function in handheld mode like the other two.
@Crono1973
That’s not the reason.
The reason people want to experience it is, first and foremost, because it’s a great game. But right now the only option to experience that great game is on the legacy console in 360p. So they want it on Switch to experience this great game on a currently played platform in HD as opposed to a legacy platform in SD. Hence the “I can’t wait to see it in HD”. Because they want to play the game, they just don’t wanna do it in sub-high-definition.
@Cloud-Strife Let's have both! A brand new Zelda game is always in the works and this does not supplant it. Separate project. In addition, the past remasters apparently helped inform the development of BotW, rather than hinder it.
I don’t tend to buy remasters unless there are exceptional circumstances like if it is an enhanced remaster like Wind Waker or Halo MCC.
I’ve still yet to play Skyward Sword so i’ll probably get it for the Wii since I prefer to play games in their original form, unless the original game is a technical mess.
Yeah, I love this one. It has a bit of a long tunnel feeling at times, but the combat is fantastic and fun thanks to the motion controls. The frequent Fi interjections, long tutorial, and the grating material/insect dialogs are likely to all go away given Aonuma's adjusted sensibilities to that sort of thing.
@TheMadPolarBear If this game is coming to Switch it is likely to be enhanced, in my opinion. There were some rough edges that will be easily sanded in a remaster.
@JaxonH 360p? Are you sure it's not 480p? Anyway, it can also be downloaded on the Wii U. While the game may not be in HD, the Wii U is and probably benefits the game.
Tbh the only time the motion controls where that bad was with that damn 3ed part of the pumpkin soup quest.
Another thing is that one of the problems with skyward swords motion controls was the forced gyro parts, since switch has better gyro control then the Wii did it might be a lot less of a pain.
@Pod Oh yes, because the remakes have had bad graphics before.
Oh wait.
@Grumblevolcano There’s a possibility that they’ll make it only work on TV mode, but that doesn’t seem likely to me since it’s not a party game.
sighs I never liked that game..but sure, hooray for the ones that does.
Enjoy the worst Zelda ever...after Tri force heroes shudders
@aaronsullivan Yeah, i’ve heard (and read the comments here) that the motion controls weren’t the best so perhaps they can do something about that with the joycons. Failing that, if there is full Pro controller support, i’d probably get the Switch version.
I enjoyed Skyward Sword, very fun actually.
I wouldn’t object to it, as long as they reduce the hand holding (like not giving the forcing us to read the collectable descriptions on ever play session....)
Improved motion controls(which I didn't mind) and visuals? It'd be a day one purchase for me. Not my number one Zelda game. But it had a great story and Ghiraham is probably one of the best villains in the franchise.
No complaints when it comes to Zelda! While Skyward Sword is probably my least favorite 3D entry, it's still a decent game in its own right and is better than some other series entries overall. The motion controls aren't perfect, but they're far from unusable.
Keep motion controls if they want, but this game needs a bottom-to-top re-build.
Visuals, newer motion controls, smartened up, fixed pacing and maybe even added side content if possible.
I only ever managed to get thru 50% of it on Wii and maybe a couple hours in Wii U download.
My least favorite 3D Zelda but that can be fixed enough to at least become a good Zelda GAME.
Hope it does come to the Switch. The one Zelda game I never played. Hopefully with motion controller optional.
crappy anouma disater keep it off the switch zelda without overworld and the combat is all puzzle typical anouma stuff that plaques many of the games before breath of the wild
@JaxonH I forgot about 1-2 Switch but the key thing about Super Mario Party is it was a choice. They could've created a normal controller Mario Party that allowed you to play in handheld mode and use the pro controller but chose the single Joy-Con approach instead.
Skyward Sword was built with motion controls in mind so I wouldn't be surprised if a similar thing happened.
@Crono1973 yeah that’s true. I actually forgot about the wind waker demo on it. I can see something happening eventually with a kind of Zelda collection still. I’m about the only person who is waiting for zelda 2 coming with online.
I’ve been waiting for this to be announced since I heard of the Switch. I bought a Wii version for my Wii U and loved the story and style, but couldn’t get into the motion controls and bad definition. Would absolutely love to start over with an HD handheld version.
@Pod not many people got to play it? It was on Nintendo's best selling console.
Good news for me though since I skipped both the Wii and Wii U.
Got a 2ds xl for Xenoblade but would pre-order it if it came to Switch. But after Cross.
After these, I guess Switch would have all the games I'm interested in but missed. Galaxy looks fun though too.
And yes, no forced motion. Motion should enhance, not be a sole gimmick.
This awful game should be erased from history, let alone being ported over to the Switch. I don't think I have been so frustrated, disappointed and disillusioned from a game. It was the first time I was shown that Nintendo was capable of making a truly mediocre Zelda game.
I liked the motion controls when fighting normal enemies. It helped the game feel more immersive.
I despised the motion controls when swimming (#$@& tadtones), flying, fighting The Imprisoned, and basically whenever there was a time limit to accomplish something.
I never got to play it. I’d hate to miss this adventure.
@ReaderRagfish who says it's going to be without motion control?
Yes please take my money I want a real Zelda game with dungeons and a story. No offense to botw.
@Crono1973
Wii was only 480p with the special component cable bought separately. But yes, Wii U is for sure a better option, but it’s still internally rendered at 360p, even if outputting at 1080p does make a small improvement.
This is a bad game even for Dolphin, which is my usual back up on GPD Win 2 to play handheld. Unfortunately the motion doesn’t Matt well to second analog, and on the TV via desktop PC, it’s a pain hooking up a Wii mote with a separate sensor bar and all that.
Oh thank heaven. This is the only Zelda I’ve never played so please be true
I'd like to see all the HD remasters on the Switch. I'd buy them all happily.
fantastic I havent played it yet since i didnt own Wii
I consider myself a diehard fan, as I have played and beat every console release except for Zelda II on NES. This is by far my least favorite. I'm happy for those who want this game in HD, but it was the first Zelda game I did not enjoy. For one, the motion controls were VERY fiddly and unresponsive half the time. But more importantly - who thought it would be a good idea to cut out almost all of the exploration elements? Aside from the main town and a few other places, every damn location in this game had the feeling of a dungeon, with constant lock-key type puzzles blocking your path - not to mention the INCESSANT interruptions from Fi. I need a little bit of a break in-between dungeons, Nintendo. I just wanted to freely explore your beautiful worlds. Luckily, BOTW came along with the most opposite design philosophy imaginable.
That said, this game does have a couple of the cleverest dungeons and bosses in all of the series, which is definitely saying something.
"not as widely praised as certain other titles" Hasn't stopped us from getting more Urban Champion and Final Fantasy X remakes/rereleases than we probably ever wanted.
The controls were really good in Skyward Sword, if you're not interested in learning how to play a game the way it plays, just stick to your narrow safe zone and play another game, ok? Story and dungeons were also great, but the constant handholding was not very fun. Still a good game overall, but a missed opportunity to make something fantastic.
I’m not a fan of motion controls so I’ll likely pass on this again if it’s motion controls only.
I still wish Nintendo would port Wind Waker and Twilight Princess to the Switch.
No thank you!
Skyward Sword is a pretty awful game, even if you ignore the motion controls. It is incredibly repetitive and dull, and most of the game feels like filler. If it wasn't a Zelda game it would have got even worse reviews.
Can't see myself ever wanting to go back to this especially after the brilliant BotW.
@wollywoo agreed, apart from the controls, which worked out really well for me.
The motion controls always worked well for me. I don't understand how people had trouble with them. So many features and puzzles used motion controls to sole so I don't see how they can do it with button presses. They would need to redesign a lot.
Can't say if this game is good or not because controls were terrible and I've only ever managed a couple of hours and I still have it on my shelf. Please Nintendo just put a normal control scheme in this one
I’d totally double dip. Unlike the popular opinion, I loved the motion controls and had no issues with them. And I feel the game would be compromised removing them, considering enemies needed to be attacked from certain directions.
@Mogster I’d say the opposite, BotW wasn’t bad but I’d never go back to it because it got repetitive, dull, and felt full of filler. The world was pretty empty with the same enemy structures copy pasted every so often.
TBH the only motion controls that bothered me were the un-necessary motion flight controls. I don’t mind the sword fighting, but that needs to be analog stick only
It was inevitable that this would be the next remaster, and I hope they keep the unique motion controls.
Great game, I'd actually have it third on my list of favorite 3D Zelda games, and if I could use the Pro Controller this would be a day one buy. If I'm forced to use motion controls though, not sure I'd pick it up right away, if at all.
Really happy about this because it's the one 3d mainline game I haven't played.
I hope they at least make it handheld playable. I don't buy games that can't be played handheld (so I skipped Mario Party and 1-2 Switch)
If it can be done with ARMS, it can be done with this game.
For TV play, allow motion controls. But make them optional at the same time. So we can play with a Pro controller.
Great! But please remove the persistent hints and handholding, but keep the motion controls (except for swimming).👍
Oh crap, another port!
...
It’s a Zelda ? News of the day !!
@companyoflosers
I am thinking of Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD.
In the first case a game they destroyed visually, in the second, a game they just worsened.
But hey, this is just my opinion.
@gutsack
How do you know that it was developed for HD?
Because none of the post-processing used in the game seem to suggest that. I could easily be wrong, so I'm genuinely curious.
@mikegamer
I know you're trying to pull a fast one here, but I really do think both their HD re-releases on Wii U are rather offensive efforts that indeed look worse than the originals. I am not suggesting you or anyone else ought to think the same as me though.
When I'm worried now, it's because I consider Skyward Sword one of the very best (if not THE best) looking Zelda games, and I'd hate to see them not do it justice with a Switch release.
@Trajan
Unfortunately, arriving as late as it did in the system's life, and requiring both nunchuck and MotionPlus, it was game not all that many Wii owners managed to connect with.
It ended up selling less than half of Twilight Princess, despite the giant install base, and being perfectly playable on Wii U.
It is indeed good news that it's making a second round.
@Liam_Doolan Jesus Christ Liam, revise that title asap. If it's a rumor you don't write it like it's a fact. Tagging it rumor doesn't help much, especially on phone where the "rumor" tag is MICROSCOPIC.
It's as simple as revising it to "The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Could Be Taking To The Skies On Switch"...
Why does it have to be clickbait just for the sake of it?
This game might be fun without waggle controls
I am pretty sure the Motion Controls are going to be optional, as otherwise you can't play it on the go.
It would defeat the whole purpose of handheld mode, if you are forced to have to put it on a kickstand and detached joycons.
Just look at Pokémon Lets Go. It has "forced" (unfortunately) motion controls in Docked mode, but normal controls in handheld mode.
So I assume Skyward Sword will probably follow in a similar suit, though I hope even in docked mode, they make motion controls optional.
@Jeronan
Who knows, they could make it much worse by requiring touch screen input for the slashing directions!
@Jeronan Like that stopped Mario Party and 1-2 Switch.
I loved Skyward Sword. The game looks really good on the Wii, it's just that the resolution is so bad. Crank that up, make the sky all blue instead of poopy, and I will buy it in seconds.
I'm not sure if Nintendo should make the motion controls optional. Enemies, gear and puzzles (or level design) clearly aren't build around it. Going to take a lot of time to redesign that.
Never played it so this is great news if true.
@Giygas_95 agree on windwaker. I'm surprised they havnt done already with all the ports they have done so far I'd have thought WW would have been a sure thing. I'd like to see them take a step back and bring ocarina and Majoras to the system. Surely 2 of the most wanted Zelda games?
Never played it , would love to , but please don't force me to use motion controls.
BotW is the only 3D Zelda I really played, so I am not sure about it.
I am thinking about getting a 2DS just for Ocarina of Time though.
If it has a left-handed option this time around then I’ll buy it.
My body is ready for this! No seriously, this is one of the most beautiful Zelda. It looks like a painting.
I've been hoping for a Wii U HD remake that never came, but having it on Switch would be even better. I hope this isn't just the Internet going mad over nothing.
@IHateTombs I still enjoyed pikmin 3, but the hand-eye disconnect with Skyward sword was just too jarring, and even impacted gameplay at times for me. Fingers crossed motion controls will at least be optional, my left-handed brother! I’d love to be able to play it.
Day one for me! It is the only Zelda game I never played and I prefer a good story to open world anyway. If they give me the option I will play normal controls everytime (see arms that is horrible on motion controls and a great game without it) but in the end I just want more Zelda in my life (bring the other two remasters, bring all the VC ones, just keep the CDI ones aside lol)
Dump the motion controls and I'd be all over this, they just didn't work right for me. I will hopefully be able to finish it this time.
I loved the game, I hated the controls. When I finished it I was like 'Thank god I do not have to play that again. My job ist done!'
This would indeed be nice for those who want it. Personally, I'd give it a hard pass. Skyward Sword was an incredibly dumbed down Zelda experience, which was an insufferably bore.
In the middle I was with this game. Overall don’t mind motion controls but the sword strikes were difficult to get right when in the heat of battle and if you got it wrong, you were severely punished.
The forced stealth sections were annoying too though thankfully they didn’t last extremely long.
Lastly, please make the Loftwing controllable with analogue sticks. That was attrocious controls on the Wii. No one likes pointingbat the screen all the time it hurts the wrist.
Some of the puzzles were really imaginative though and the characters had some depth. Really needed voice acting though. Also wish skyloft was bigger.
@Kalmaro could be hard to remove the motion controls since it's so deeply integrated in pretty much everything in this game.
They should include this with Switch online.
Would buy it in an instant, i loved the motion controls except in the first battle with Ghirahim. God that was annoying him just grabbing my sword, GAHHH!
Not for me. This'd be a step backwards from BoTW, the game that got me interested to play a Zelda game after Ocarina of Time (3D).
Then I'd rather start a play through of the hard mode in BoTW sometime.
Just bring it. I love SS and it'd be a blast to play it again. But to be honest I'd rather have a remake than a remaster. Some things just don't work so well in that game, namely the overworld
I agree with alot of people who want to play this without the motion controls. It would be nice but I unfortunately dont see it happening.
The wiimote was intrical to both combat and puzzles so to remove motion controls could harm the overall experience and gameplay as a whole.
Instant buy. I have no issue with the motion controls, but please sort Fi out! For me, that is the most annoying part of the game. I get that Wii was heavily marketed to the Casual audience, but the Fi hand holding ruined the game
Loved the game, loved the dungeons but totally loved the motion controls. Added a great level of immersion. The game would work without them, so whatever works for everyone.
The water "dungeon" was one of the best ever.
I never got around to beating this game, but I did enjoy what I played of it. I wouldn't mind motion controls, but I love playing in handheld mode, so motion controls might be a problem in that sense. At least tabletop mode exists if there's no option for regular controls. But yeah, I'd love to see an HD remaster of this.
All I want is portable Wind Waker. Skyward Sword is the weak link in a long chain of great Zelda games in my opinion. It needs an HD Remaster/Remake, so do it, fine, but give us Wind Waker and Twilight Princess too. Why not?
Ditch the motion controls and provide regular controller option and Im sold. Always wanted to play this to see if it was better than Twilight Princess, which I hated, although I have loved basically all of the other Zelda games. This is one I never played, even as a die-hard Zelda fan (stupid motion controls).
Since I never owned a Wii or WiiU, I'm really looking forward to this!
@Boxmonkey
Except it hadn't "waggle controls".🙄 But of course if you played it, like it had waggle controls, I see why you thought it sucked.
Being generally allergic to motion controls, I never bought Skyward Sword, as I didn't really fancy playing Zelda: Just Dance Edition, but if they were to port this in its original form, it would be insane to put a Zelda game on the Switch that you couldn't play in handheld mode (I know that was the deal with 1-2-Switch, but this isn't 1-2-Switch. No one's playing single player 1-2-Switch on the bus...) But then, from what I've heard, the game is so heavily built around motion controls that giving it a traditional control scheme would be a massive task...
Like many have said, the biggest issue with this game was the really bad motion controls. Ditch that and I'd consider it.
The game itself is ok, not the best Zelda game, or even close really, I'd put OoT, Botw, MM, TP and WW above this game on everything from story to content, but it can be a decent entry if they fix the damn gameplay.
@Haywired well i request it myself but yeah you are defo not wrong, they would have to redo the entire gameplay for the game, considering many aspects of Nintendo games, in-game content, are built around their ingenuity with gameplay (especially designed so you engage with the gameplay to progress parts of the story/content), changing that on a game so heavily focused on motion controls is defo going to be a task and a half, if at all possible.
@JaxonH
I think that's probably the direction they should go if they release SS on the Switch. Maybe even leave the right analog sword striking optional in TV mode.
If it works well enough and sells, maybe they can use motion controls and right analog options for the inevitable Botw sequel.
@Saego Mario Party is a party game, so can be excused and 1-2 Switch is a Joy-Con showcase game.
Zelda is per definition a Solo game experience, so it wouldn't make any sense to force detachable joy-con input for handheld play.
@Razer
@Razer
Sorry, that's bull. Only people who never played it or played it, like it was Twilight Princess on the Wii, thought it had bad motion controls. I watched a bunch of videos back then and many, many people shaked the wiimote like crazy without any kind of tactics. Of course, for them the controls "sucked".🙄
Skyward Sword had other problems, but surely not the controls.
Hard to get excited about this one. Poor controls (they worked most of the time but weren’t fun at all) and a game I couldn’t get into. Ditched it after a few hours. Unless they’re doing some serious reworking I’ll be passing.
Always wanted to play Skyward Sword, if they can make the motion controls optional then I'll buy this day one.
Ive always been interested in this game. I'm just too lazy to get a wiimotion plus
People have praised the game for it's story, however many have had issues (myself included) with it's motion controls and use of them. If they bought Skyward Sword to the Switch with the option to turn the motion controls of, i'll probably go for a purchase.
That was the one feature that prevented me from not completing this game, that and the calibration.
Who wants Skyward Sword to Switch?!?! That is as close as 3D Zelda comes to a mediocre title (i.e., yes, still great, but markedly less so!).
Please either make a new game or port a different Zelda instead. Such as a collection of all top-down Zeldas or MM HD.
I wish it gets confirmed!
And fi this is the case, i'd very much like to see Mario Galaxy I & II also.
I would love for this to be confirmed - and for Nintendo to bring Twilight Princess HD and Wind Waker HD to the Switch, too. My WiiU has been packed up in a box at the bottom of the closet for over a year, and it is unlikely that it will ever see the light of day again, so it would be great to get to play the older games again - especially now that I have finally managed to get my boyfriend into Zelda with BotW.
Thank goodness! I was having nightmares that Nintendo would release new, original games which I find unfamiliar and frightening.
Yes please. As long as Fi isn't as annoying and there's an option to skip tutorials.
I really don't understand the problem people hace with this game's motion controls. I 100% the game back when it was released, do I have to replay the game to see the flaws with motion controls?
Can’t wait to play through that dog awful silent realm tear collection thing. I hated that.
@MrBlacky yeah ok. I played it and it had shoddy motion controls. You can pretend it didn't but it did. You can convince yourself it was a good game but you won't convince me.
Thanks for your input on my opinion but I'm not buying it.
Here’s my experience with Skyward Sword:
Like any full-blooded Nintendo fan, I bought Skyward Sword when it released on Wii. I was having difficulty playing the game how I liked, that is sometimes laying in my bed, because if the motion controls. It was kind of a turnoff not being able to play it when and how I wanted sometimes. I may have gotten to the first dungeon.
Years later I bought it digitally on the eshop on sale because I was desperately wanting a Zelda game.
Around the same time Twilight Princess HD came out and sucked my attention away. I think this second time I tried skyward sword I got just a little bit farther than the first time I paid it. The controls for me seemed a little better the second time, probably due to enhanced Wii-motion plus controls. Despite liking skyward sword more on my second go round, twilight princess stole the show for me. Next to ocarina of time and breath of the wild, twilight princess is my favorite Zelda. All that being said I will definitely like skyward sword on switch if it releases. I’m actually really excited about it now! I think it’s time I finally give it a shot it deserves and play it all the way through
Can’t come soon enough.
@Razer
No, Hadoken-Mode (or whatever it was called) in Ultra Street Fighter had shoddy motion controls. Care to explain, what exactly was so bad with Skyward Sword's motion controls?
@Pod Oh so you'd rather have the washed out vomit-colored bloom in Twilight Princess? Sad day.
LOL I just went and brought the Wii version before I got a notification that this was announced
@Pod Nintendo has been developing all their games in HD then down-scaling to SD since GCN. Not sure about textures but that's not really an issue with cel shaded games.
@MrBlacky Maybe he is just bad at games.
Give me a special edition with wiimote joycon and I won't just preorder it, I'll be happy I own a switch for the first time ever. This game deserves to be in he. If I had the ability to play with and without motion controls so I can play on a plane and continue when reach my destination. Happy camper. That's all I'll say about that. Give me all the zelda he releases. Maybe a new collection of majora and ocarina. Just turn it into a zelda machine. I want to have a reason to disconnect my Wii u finally.
I'm fine with them making motion controls optional, just so I can watch people struggle with awkward analog sword controls while I hack and slash my way through the game with ease.
@Pod
They might. Then again, if they are able to get it right, it might look amazing with the mosaic-water-paint art style the game uses. But yeah, Twilight Princess HD wasn't exactly the most beautiful remaster.
Regardless, I for one, am cautiously optimistic about vandalizing the Lumpy Pumpkin in HD.
@Kalmaro
I personally felt like the motion controls were very well done, especially after I adjusted the sensitivity for motion plus. Those fights with Ghirahim were pretty awesome.
But I think the problem is that some gamers just don't like to mix physical work with their gaming. I completely understand that, and if Nintendo could just give us an option as to use the motion controls or standard controls, then everybody wins.
At this point, I just hope this rumor turns out to be true.
@__dave I'm totally fine with motion controls as an option
But I don't like it being forced on me. That's part of why I don't want the let's go games. Part anyway.
Please let it be an HD remaster!
I'd buy this game again instantly.
Edit: Just seeing the comments above, IMHO playing Skyward Sword without motion controls makes no sense. It would take too much away from this exceptional game.
All of the battles against Ghirahim would become pointless and boring, for example.
No, motion controls have to be mandatory in SS, there's no way around it.
It's definitely coming. Can't wait!
@mikegamer
I'm just saying they made Twilight Princess look worse in the remaster. This doesn't only pertain to the color palette.
I missed out on Skyward Sword originally because I'm physically disabled so the motion controls were an issue. If they let you use a pro controller this time I'm absolutely buying it!
I kind of want TP back though...it's the only reason I'm still keeping my Wii U around
@gutsack
I'd like to know here you've read a statement like that, as it doesn't make a lot of sense to me.
"HD" only really describes screen resolution in the first place, though if we decide to incorrectly use it to talk about general asset quality of late era Xbox360/PS3 and onwards, then nothing about the models, rigs, or textures in Skyward Sword is or ever was "HD".
They're very well crafted and well optimized assets for their technical era, but that's about it. Fidelity/complexity wise they're a full order of magnitude below the games you saw at the time on competing platforms. And I can tell you with a good amount of certainty that Nintendo did not make the assets in a quality that would look great on those systems, and then dial them back for running on Wii.
@__dave
I'm always cautiously optimistic with Nintendo even when I'm skeptical with them. They've earned that.
Zooming about the cloud sea in 1080p would look spectacular!
Wow, what a divisive game! I'm in the 'loved it' camp. The music and painterly style really gave this game a certain feel for me. That, combined with the focus on characters and storytelling, just really made it memorable. All the stuff with impa, groose, demise, ghiraghim (whatever his name was) and of course zelda was great.
I also really liked the way that the areas in the game were used, like the forest flooding to make a familiar area into something completely different. Maybe it was a product of limited budget or something but i found it a nice alternative to games with lots of locations that you visit for a while and then forget.
I'm not saying i would want every zelda game to be like this - there were certainly things that irritated, but as a one-off it tried to do something different and really succeeded in my view.
This and xenoblade chronicles made my last year of playing in the wii really memorable.
@Pod There was an interview with one producer/director/somebody prior to Wii U's launch stating that. He implied the transition to HD wouldn't be difficult because that's how they've always done it, even though later interviews and efforts indicated they were still in over their heads. Can't remember exactly who said it or where I read it.
Get rid of the jank motion controls, or at least vastly improve them, and I'll be interested. If It's $60, no way hose, but knowing Nintendo it will be full price.
Skyward Sword is the only 3D Zelda that I could not get into, but I'd absolutely be down for an HD remake as long as they fix some stuff. Specifically Fi's barrage of interruptions, sometimes janky motion controls, and the pacing in general.
I know it would never happen, but imagine a Zelda HD trilogy (in the vein of Metroid Prime Trilogy on Wii). Wind Waker HD, Twilight Princess HD, and (potentially) Skyward Sword HD all in the same package with some extras like a universal sound test, concept art, mini-games like Roll Goal/Fishing with additional levels/features. One can dream...
@gutsack
I think I might remember reading something like that as well. Though just what "HD" meant to the interviewer at the time, and to the person answering the question, this may have been a little diffuse.
Don't get too excited just yet, folks. It took a long time for Majora's Mask to be released on 3DS despite all the hints that were dropped.
@shani They can fix anything if they want. They do have the game and files. They can if they really care change stuff. It's not a biggy. It will just take time, but question is... is Nintendo willing to do that???
@Pod @gutsack I don’t have a link or anything but I think it was Capcom that said assets were in HD then downgraded. It was to do with RE Revelations going from 3DS to home consoles
i still have my skyward sword copy for my wii still in good condition, and the limited edition controller that came with it, i'm surprised by this announcement so looking forward to what happens.
@MrBlacky it was broken is what. It was hard to get link to do anything you wanted him to do, and i had to engage with this to interact with certain elements of the game.
Im clearly not the only one who thinks this... Considering my opinion is actually the popular opinion... Tell me what do YOU think makes it so good?
Rather than asking me to explain myself, explain how you could enjoy an abomination like that?
I would definitely buy it as long as it has motion controls. I really want Windwaker HD to come to Switch as well.
I love this game so much and I will defend it to the day I die!! 😁 I’m so ready for this if it’s true!!
@Razer I sincerely hope you aren't allowed to legally drive an automobile.
@Gerald I vaguely remember that too but it was a different interview.
@Gerald
@gutsack
Oh yeah, that was absolutely the case with RE Revelations.
What the guy at Nintendo said, as I remember it, what more close to something like "We don't consider the limitations of the end platform at first. We create the art and design in a quality that will look good on any target platform."
It was more to do with not letting the artistic vision and effort be hampered by the knowledge that a game was targeting current low-end specs, or a handheld instead of a console.
At least, that's what I remember hearing a couple times.
@Razer
What made me think, motion controls in Skyward Sword was so good? Because I could make Link do what I want, in an intuitive way. Swinging your sword horizontall, in an angle, vertically, up or down? I all worked and felt great (assuming you didn't waggle around like an idiot).
Instant buy, love that game. Just please, give an option to make Fi a silent type. Loved the character in a way, but solving the puzzles for you by putting the pieces in place and holding your hand while pushing them together is an insult to the word puzzle itself.
That aside, I've been wanting to revisit this game for quite a while now. The streamlined approach may have put some people off, but I loved how they managed -for me at least- to make it feel like dungeons and the roads between them were less disconnected and more... Natural and smooth.
Then again, BotW, with its massive world to explore filled with lots of smaller disconnected puzzles or a "standard" Zelda game with a hand-and-a-half of good dungeons and some towns and secrets is just as welcome.
@MrBlacky awww chicken chaser
@Alucard83
Huh? What does that mean? You know, english is not my first language, so if this is some kind of slang or something, I don't really understand it. 🤔
If there ever was a remake that needed improvements, it's this one. (Language warning)
Can't really disagree with Egoraptor there. It's like the literal opposite of Breath Of The Wild.
And given how SS started the timeline, while BOTW can be placed at the end of either of its branches, it's really fitting.
I could get behind this if they reworked the controls to allow for traditional gameplay, but since they probably won't, no buy for me.
if you want to make skyward sword better only one thing needs to happen...FORGET THE SWITCH HAS MOTION CONTROLS!!!!!
@shani the motion controls were a mess and easily the one thing that made me not beat it, first and only zelda i just could not play through....give a controller option and all will be forgiven,.
@NewAdvent
Yeah, the controls aren't much fun.
For me, moreso than any imprecision, it was how slow everything felt, exactly because they wanted it to be precise enough (which still isn't good enough for many players).
Compared to Twilight Princess, you can't slash while walking/running, and much more time passes in between each slash executing. On top of that, Link doesn't flinch when hit by most attacks, because they wanted people to not lose track of their aim or slash direction, and I find the lack of visual feedback confusing.
Add the way in which Link always moves with his right arm in an awkward position, and the whole thing just feels sluggish and against you, and to me at least, felt like a step back for the series. :-/
As you say, it would need a good bit of reworking to really be fun. If I had my say, that reworking would go way beyond just the controls as well.
Obviously with the fact the Switch Joy-Cons allow for motion controls it's really a no-brainer why they'd remaster/re-release it on the Switch. However I think it would be great if they figured out a way to re-engineer the game to work with traditional controls as well - like have 2 control type options in the main menu. It would certainly make it more convenient and less awkward to play it on the go too.
This seems inevitable. Zelda games get ports and remakes left and right. Considering the motion controls on the Switch, this could work well. Also, it's the only old 3D Zelda not get the remake treatment yet. I've never played it, but the Switch would be the perfect time. I wonder if Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD will get ported to Switch.
I know a lot of people here (myself included) are non believers in the reworking to allow for classic controls in the remaster, but i do remember one time Miyamoto himself acknowledged that many people disliked the motion controls and gave up on the game halfway because of that. So much so that they gave up on it almost completely for BOTW.
Maybe the reason they're taking so long to release a SS remaster is exactly because of reworking the mechanics to fit a traditional playstyle.
Wishful thinking, i know... But a think is plausible and feasible. Just don't know if a "simple" remaster is gonna be worth all that trouble.
@Pod
Its not the graphics that are the problem.
@__dave
Ah yes. The all gamers who didn't like the motion controls are just lazy argument.
Its not like it had anything to do with legitimately bad controls. Wait! It totally does! If it didn't, you wouldn't hafta recalibrate it. This might shock you, but games can have bad controls period. Yes. Even on traditional controllers.
And its certainly not like there are any games on the wii with motion controls that worked wonderfully right?
Oh wait! There were quite a few games on the wii where the motion controls worked just fine and people don't complain endlessly about it.
Rabid SS fans are so annoying and petty. Not to mention in total denial.
Can't help but suspect this was a misinterpretation. Sure, the Switch Joy-Cons are more than capable of recreating the Wii MotionPlus controls. The problem is, unless they rebuilt the mechanics from the ground up, it's unlikely they'd be able to add any traditional button controls. Without them, the game can't support handheld mode, and I'm highly skeptical that Nintendo would publish a Switch game without that feature.
I won't be spending my money on this piece of crap again. Skyward Sword is legitimately bad, both for technical reasons and nitpicky ones.
Which is a pity. It has some fantastic dungeons it just does not deserve.
Skyward sword was a very good game.
I loved the motion controls (yes I'm one of THOSE people, I loved the graphics and art style (and this in HD would look stunning - just look at dolphin to see why) The story was good and the dungeons were good (occasionally fantastic) Great loveable characters
Downsides are repetitive bosses and very slow initial start. Also they need to shut Fi up (Fi was intrusive and just not needed- make it optional how much she states the obvious!?) and going back to the same areas in different states was interesting and worked sometimes, not others.
@Tempestryke
I know, that's why I'm worried. They fixed a good amount of gameplay issues in Wind Waker. But then they dstroyed the visual identy of the game, and left the (already in 2002 somewhat unpleastly obvious in its MIDI nature) soundtrack completely as it was.
It made no sense at all,
@Pod Look worse? How? It looked better, not sure how it can look worse than a sub HD Wii game.
@mikegamer
I would say lots of games on Wii U and Switch (and many other systems) look worse than games on Wii/GameCube.
For Twilight Princess in particular though, upping the quality of SOME textures, but not all, creates a rather wishy washy look for a game that stylistically already had a hard time deciding what it wanted to be.
And when they decide to not change the shading style much at all, we get these grey/black boring shadows engulfing smudgy textures with too many hard-to-read details, draped on low-poly models that are now exquisitely well rendered in all their blockiness.
The game was a bit of a visual hodge-podge on GC/Wii, with the technical art director clearly having had a hard time deciding just how "real" different aspects should look, and it all just gets worse and more confusing in the HD remaster, if you ask me.
@TheMadPolarBear Perhaps ironically, the motion controls, though divisive, I liked just fine. I was referring to many other small annoyances that interrupted the flow of play.
Motion controls were terrible: +1! I finished the game, and enjoyed how some dungeons were reused and remixed; it was at least different from the admittedly formulaic design Zeldas had fallen into. The loft-wing sections and boss fights ‘in between’ were great, and items actually being worthwhile AFTER the dungeon they were found in was a FINALLY! moment for me too (break that formula!). Hub world was embarrassingly sparse, and I never forged a great connection with the recurring characters (it was trying to be Link Potter or some shiz!). But Both those Ghirahim/Demise ‘mirror’ fights, HO-LEE HELL the frustration! As someone mentioned above, I’ve rarely been so excited to beat a game if only to never ‘have to’ play it again. 7/10, so...one of the worst Zeldas ever (but still better than II, in my op).
Ain´t gonna happen.
