If you had to pick one of the most surprising Nintendo Switch announcements so far this year, a standout would likely be Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the NecroDancer. The game was originally revealed during the March Nindie Direct showcase and is being developed by Brace Yourself Games and published by Spike Chunsoft.
Regarding a release date, the game is currently listed for "Spring 2019" on Nintendo's official website. In saying this, a recent Nintendo Europe email – promoting all of the games coming to the Switch this May –includes Cadence of Hyrule in between the upcoming Resident Evil releases and Assassin's Creed III Remastered. So, with any luck, we could be playing this rhythmic action-adventure before the end of the month.
For anyone who missed the Nindie announcement, Cadence of Hyrule is modeled on Brace Yourself Games' original rhythm-combat title, Crypt of the NecroDancer. In the new game, you can play as Link or Princess Zelda as you go on a quest to save Hyrule. Here's a bit more about it, along with the trailer:
As Link or Princess Zelda, players explore randomly generated overworld and dungeons on a quest to save Hyrule, and every beat of the 25 remixed Legend of Zelda tunes is a chance to move, attack, defend and more. From modern-looking Lynels to the Hyrulean Soldiers of old, players must master the instinctive movements of each pixel-art enemy and strategically outstep them in rhythmic combat using an arsenal of iconic items from The Legend of Zelda, as well as the spells and weapons from Crypt of the NecroDancer.

I can't wait. I already put $20 aside to get it as soon as I can.
Looking forward to trying this one
This is one of my most anticipated games in a while. It's going to be so good.
The original was one of those well recommended indie games that I just never got around to, so this seems like the perfect way to make up for that.
Can’t wait. The sooner the better. That trailer makes me smile every time I watch it.😊
But where does it fit in the timeline?!?
This looks amazeballs! Great soundtrack too.
The music though... I'm getting it because of the music...
After playing the original, I'm less enthusiastic for this one, if I'm being honest.
I kinda figured as such. It's almost at the point where I need to put all these games i want on a chalkboard and do eenie meenie miny Moe because I want at least 5 or so this month alone but there's no way i can afford all let alone play all of them. Good problem to have but yeesh!
It's gotta be about $20 or so, I'd assume?
Still need to try the original, haha
I can’t wait, I want it now!!!
I kind of assumed this would be a May release since June is Mario Maker 2. Switch has been on fire since launch, imo. Especially compared to 3DS and Wii U in the same time frame.
@WomboCombo I'm hoping it's good. If nothing else, the music will be far better, and the pixel art is quite a bit more attractive. Whether I'll like it or not will come down more to the structure of the game and the way it's balanced, though.
Gaaaah! I've got so many games to buy... But I've gotta put money aside for Mario Maker. At least I get $15 off at launch.
Oh man, I really need Nintendo to release a new improved 27 hour day!
Ok so this one and Castlevania alone make this a good month.
Im struggling with enter the gungeon and cuphead. Is crypt of the necrodancer hard?
@PBandSmelly There are 5 Zones, and I'm stuck on Zone 2. It's an addicting kind of hard, though.
Gimme gimme gimme!!
@PBandSmelly
Definitely a similar kind of hard to those two games. It's good in short bursts and is the kind of game that you may never beat. I've sunk 25+ hours and still haven't beaten the main story campaign (There are three arcs and the final plot character is just stupid hard). I've had fun playing, but if you're a completionist and not a pro, steer clear.
@gaga64 this is so great 🤣
I never played Crypt of the NecroDancer, but I'm VERY EXCITED to buy & try this game. If I love it I might consider buying the original
@Ralizah I hear you, but I'm hoping it's like Dynasty Warriors. How many people are there (including me) that don't enjoy any other Warriors game, but LOVED Hyrule Warriors?
Ohhh they are randomly generated levels? I hate those ... in my opinion it feels like a lazy choice for skipping level design work and usually doesn’t have the same impact on me than a designed world step by step
Hopefully Cadence of Hyrule isnt a roguelike like Crypt of the Necrodancer. The trailer doesn't make it seem like it is, but I'd like actual confirmation.
I hope we get a physical edition of this game
@westman98 I’d imagine it will be. Part of the challenge of the original is the levels not be predetermined, so players aren’t just memorizing the route to the exit. Maybe there will be lives and not permadeath or difficulty options though since it is a game that is probably aiming for broader appeal.
Crypt of the Necrodancer's art style threw me off, but the Zelda version is much better looking so definitely wanting to give this a go.
I've been looking forward to this.
This month is devoid of new game releases so this launching this month would be nice.
I still don't know if I have ever played the original properly or if my rhythm is off. It's fun but that is off putting.
@PBandSmelly Well...
The game is split between 'Zones'
Zone 1 is basically a tutorial
Zone 2 is the first 'real' game
Zone 3 and beyond.... Good luck!
I haven't played crypt of the necrodancer but I am really excited about this one. Bring it on!
And the Nintendo Store online STILL tells me that Super Crate Box was released in April. In other words, put no faith in this random gathering of words being sent forth by the Big N.
