A game inspired by the popular Fire Emblem series has taken to Kickstarter, and a Switch release is on the table should it secure enough funding.
Path of the Midnight Sun is a title which combines Visual Novel elements with turn-based strategy and boasts lavish 'Live2D' animation segments. It actually began life as a ROM hack called Fire Emblem: Midnight Sun, but developer Studio Daimon decided to totally abandon the connection to Intelligent Systems' series and instead use the project as the basis for an entirely new IP. The game has been built from the ground-up and is looking pretty special, we're sure you'll agree.
The Italian-based team is looking for a funding goal of £27,250 to supply at least 20 hours of gameplay content; they have also said that there are no plans to lock "relevant story or gameplay elements" behind stretch goals, or DLCs. At the time of writing, the campaign has raised almost half of the target figure, with £14,900 pledged.
Should the project hit the stretch goal of £43,000, the game will include full voice acting. None of the other stretch goals have been announced as yet, but presumably one of them will include a Switch version. The team has said that "if we meet the required stretch goal, and/or if the game has enough success post-release, we will release it on Nintendo Switch as well."
Will you be backing this interesting-looking title? Let us know with a comment.

Quite odd that they're trying to capitalise on their own ROM hack, to be honest. But hey, Undertale also started out as a ROM hack, and look how that turned out. Wait and see, I guess.
Somehow that's hilarious.
Can't wait to see how this pans out.
@TheAwesomeBowser The actual KS doesn't mention the ROM hack, to be fair, so they're not really capitalising on its fame. And they're not using any elements of Fire Emblem here - this is an entirely new game.
Nope! Looks far to close to a mobile game......I'm sure the casuals will back it!
It sounds like it has a nice story and some interesting characters but I can't get past some of those animations 😅 Point and click too..it was good in Professor Layton but I don't usually like it.
I wonder what Mangs and Mekkah will think about this, they're all over Fire Emblem ROM hacks.
Sounds interesting. Will have to wait to learn more ,but definitely something I can see myself playing
Shady marketing, and now they want you to trust them with your money. let the buyer beware!!!
@TheAwesomeBowser
Undertale didnt start as a rom hack, his previous games were
Looks like some FTP trash on the Google Play store. Way too many high quality games for me to care about this.
this is a hard pass. some of the designs are VERY close to the source fire emblem character sheets. also the flash animation battles are PRETTY bad.
I hope the New Super Mario Land 2, AMR2, Pokemon Uranium, and Mother 4 also got turn into original game soon too. Those were great rom hacks that would work as original IPs. Also it's hard to believe this was a Fire Emblem hack at one point, if it did look and play like this then I could see why Nintendo wants nothing to do with it.
Looks kinda awful tbh and some of those images look like they traced over actual FE art which makes sense given its origins.
My curiosity waned very fast during that video. I have little to no interest.
@PBandSmelly @Damo Fair enough.
Looks very charming, just a bit jumpy with the animation.
Oof, I enjoyed the Live2D segments, but the moment they showed combat... Hard pass. The game simply looks like they added combat as an afterthought. It looks bland and boring.
@TheAwesomeBowser well, rom hacks do tend to be games of their own right that just use a pre-existing game as the core basis. some just come out as just edited versions others get to be so well enough that the ip owners start to feel insecure & send out C&Ds.
The point and click was fine and the animations were durable but the combat ruined it for me. Basically looks like a glorified phone game. Somebody will enjoy this
