Next week, Nintendo is releasing the 1994 Super Famicom title Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem on the Switch Online service in Japan.
This is the third entry in Intelligence system's tactical role-playing series and the first one to be released on the Super Famicom. It stars Marth, has never been released outside of Japan, and in 2006 received a remake on the DS - which is also exclusive to Japan.
To play this game, you'll need a Japanese eShop account so you can access the local store. From there you can download the Super Famicom app. Keep in mind, all of the text is in Japanese.
Japan's other NSO games for the month of September include Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest, Super Tennis and Wild Guns. Is this particular entry in the Fire Emblem series a game you would be interested in checking out? Tell us below.

Wish they would translate it for everyone else. I’m gonna try playing through it but it’ll be hard without knowing any Japanese.
Dude japan gets everything!
Now that’s cool. Shame it was never translated but the DS version was great.
任天堂の人々、僕さえこのゲームを英語に訳せるよ。もしかして完ぺきではないけど、ただでやってあげる。どう思うか?[Nintendo people, even I can translate this game into English. Maybe it wont be perfect, but I'll do it for free, what do you think?]
@Heavyarms55 Think you can show me a good site to learn japanese for free?
And my rage of not being Japanese continues.
There goes my hope they'll localize the original fire emblem games for the west.
@Snatcher I mean, I think duolingo has something, if you're good with an owl shrieking at you. I would love to learn Japanese, but I don't have that much free time for gaming, let alone learning a new language. The motivation that I'll be able to play mother 3 and the og SMTs at the end would get me through it when I do find the time, not to mention a million other things I can use the language for.
They have to know Fire Emblem is a title that sells well in the west - they wouldn't have gone to the effort to give Three Houses a global simultaneous release if they thought it would only make money in Japan. Why don't they bring titles like this over? It makes no sense to me.
Been wishing for years that Nintendo would take a page out of Square Enix's book and just give us non-Japanese fans official translations of the Fire Emblem games we missed out on already. Wishful thinking I know but we still have no way of experiencing Genealogy of the Holy War officially and that's an injustice that must be corrected.
So Japan gets Fire Emblem, and we get literal scat. Thanks Nintendo!!
Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem, Genealogy of the Holy War, Fire Emblem: Thracia 776, and Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade deserve official localizations/Remakes for the western market.
Come on Nintendo, while you're making bank get some translations happening.
They have Shin Megami Tensei and now this?
Lucky, I would actually have a reason to use this service if we had the English versions.
One of my favorite games in the whole series.
The FE1 remake aspect of it mostly just a fun novelty with both the OG FE1 and DS Shadow Dragon being better experiences overall (though I'd imagine back in the day it was amazing value).
But the actual FE3 portion of it is superb and in my opinion a way better game compared to its DS remake which was privy to some remarkably bad gameplay chances and the added avatars character and all the extra side story stuff did nothing but hurt the main experience.
@Blooper987 there are fan translations if the remake and the nes original play those I'm a hardcore fe fan and the old ones are the ones I like most due to the difficulty and the fact they aren't catered to weebs. Not that the weeb games are bad they are just... not my thing. Anime stuff is trash in my eyes not saying it is trash but I personally hate it. Except xc1 and pokemon but they are more regular game than anime.
Nice, don’t need this one stinkin up the joint
@Snatcher There's nothing to it but time and practice. There's no shortcut to learning a language, no magic pill or secret trick. You just need to sit down and do it and understand that it's a long, slow process.
But it's a long slow process that almost anyone can do.
But if you're looking for a place to start, start with hiragana.
@Expa0 curious what your favorite game is? Playing them all now finishing gba ones mostly through ds shadow dragon. If I had to say my favorite it would honestly be 3 houses because it is a lot less anime troupe garbage than the last few and is very good with story and gameplay (which is why I am in love with the series). Up next is genealogy fan translation hear it is the best and I'm excite for it and thracian by the way how do you emulate japan only titles? I use a pocket go v2 and it is a DREAM and I highly recommend it over playing on a monitor.
@Heavyarms55 why don't people use fan translation? People worked SO hard on it but people seem to ignore it... I get it that some people don't want to pirate but again: this is a fan project just like the mother 3 fan translation. It's meant to be free. (Also realized I misread your comment with this reply but who cares still a good question even if I misread your comment )
@LaytonPuzzle27 Binding is a bit crap to be honest. While I played it for completion’s sake, I never found myself enjoying it. Roy is an absolute stinker of a unit but required so sucks all the fun out of the game. Blazing Blade solved so many issues and gave us Hector. It would be good for Nintendo to give us the Japan only games though, I do agree.
@Crockin don't need 4th best nes game stinking up the joint.
1. Mario 3
2. Metroid
3. Mario bros
4. Fe mystery/shadow dragon (honestly so similar I count them as one)
In my opinion that is.
(I wrote this all forgetting it was a snes game because I played the ds ports and I'm an idiot but I know a few people who think they are the best snes games so... they are still good haha)
Just to say how good this game is, gameplay has hardly changed at all over the years because this 1st title was so good and it isn't the 3ds weeb crap that it is today, while being the dark souls of it's time (difficult). This game also has in my opinion one of the best soundtracks and is a fantastic game. I hope you try the fan translation because it will probably change your mind (unless you don't like strategy that is)
@nessisonett hector is just FUN I swear and the "tutorial" with Lyn felt like its own great game of its own with a full game on top of that and hector mode... this game rules.
@Ghostchip Well it really is the piracy thing. It's extremely tricky to patch a legitimate copy of the game. But even for people willing to play in that... at best, legally grey area... applying a patch to a rom isn't too hard, but it does require learning some things that the average person likely doesn't know.
@Ghostchip Mystery is a SNES game!
@Ulysses Homerun
I added the fan translation to my Snes classic and runs perfectly. It's a shame Nintendo never localized any of the Super Famicom FE games.
I think we'll sooner see remakes of all of the Japan-only Fire Emblem games over translations of the original ROMs. I doubt that the original games have aged well enough that fans would enjoy playing them today (particularly as most of us haven't grown up with the games).
I suppose Nintendo could translate all of the ROMs and release them as a premium retail collection, but I strongly doubt it will happen as per the reasons above.
Furthermore, the problem I have with retroactive translations is that they tend to contain anachronistic rhetoric that is inconsistent with the period in which the work was originally made. The upcoming SaGa Collection in fact is being censored due to "evolving cultural/social norms", which sounds less like reflecting "norms", but rather normalising their ideological agenda. Now this is the sort of censorship that I find particularly troubling.
@Ghostchip Pretty sure the "fan translation" of the NES game is a copypaste (or demake of) the DS script.
I once for awhile asked in the fan translation scene if anyone wanted to do the script for FE1 (before the DS remake existed) and got maybe a few pieces back.
Yeah, maybe I am just a little upset. Not really that someone else did it, but that (I recall they even said as much) it was porting over the official translation, relatively soon after said remake release, rather than someone's own words, that I just ignored it.
Like, if it's the DS script cut down to fit the Famicom limitations, I might as well just play the DS version.
It's possible (and I daresay likely) something would be altered in the remake process.
And probably I will and just play the untranslated version and hope my Japanese study is coming along enough to pick up some of the text myself, enough to enjoy it.
@GilbertXI Chatting up catgirls? That'd be the best use anyways!
Actually, the best FE games are the ones that released on SNES. They are pure 16bit turn-based gold (especially Genealogy of the Holy War). Nintendo should at least localize the games, not so much for profit, but for history.
Setting up a Japanese account on the Switch is incredibly easy, however if you want to play games like Fire Emblem, might I suggest buying a SNES mini and loading it with Japanese exclusives that have English patches. That same official feel without the language barrier.
Oguma FTW!
I imported this and played it through trial and error. The two sword masters were unreal. Oguma, the captain of the guard, (from the anime) and Nathriel (or some derivative) who was a ronin of sorts. Utterly beasted just about every other unit and topped out at 20 in basically everything.
Great game, they really need to do a translation.
@Ghostchip I’m teasing, relax
@Heavyarms55 a lot of sites offer already patched fan translations that's what usually use for this kind of thing.
@Axlroselm at this point unless genealogy gets a remake it wont get localized because it has some... suggestive content which is also why mother 3 wasn't localized (todays sociopolitical climate). Its just a lot more work when you have to go and figure out what is acceptable. Fan translations are great but they just make it like the original and Nintendo just can't release it like that.
@KingMike cool man enjoy the Japanese version when you know the language god knows I couldn't learn Japanese.
@nessisonett shoot haven't played it yet only shadow dragon I figured they were on the same console lol. I started the ds version and thought that since it and shadow dragon were remade on the same console both games were on the same console. Still one of the best snes games lol
@Scollurio oh yeah, Definitely.
Great. I was hoping other FE games would end up on NES & SNES Online eventually. Would still like localized versions but these will do for now. I've been self-studying Japanese since February. My focus has been on reading since that's the skill set I'll be using the most. I think I'll play the first chapter or so and see how much I can understand and then decide if I'll continue or wait a bit before trying again. I can read most of the text in the screenshots above so that's a good sign.
Can't wait to play this one. 日本語をまた練習しないとな!
@Heavyarms55 手伝いましょうか?
I hope they'll translate it and release it in the west.
@Ghostchip genealogy of the holy war is the best fire emblem from nes/snes, and one of the best of the franchise, so please stop saying that shadow you know what and Mistery of the emblem are better than it
@rilimini I don't think you read my comment correctly. I know genealogy is the best snes fe but I said I played the ds remakes and thought they were both on the NES because I only played the remakes. I know genealogy is one of the best if no the best fire emblem sorry for the confusion. Although I am loving path of radiance right now great game. Definitely needs a re release. Also what the heck was the last part of your comment seems like giberous to me...
We get Mario’s Super Picross, they get another Fire Emblem game.
Famicom Wars is inevitable.
Do they have thracia yet? Probably not considering its difficulty
I bought this game for a penny on eBay five years ago.
Ah dangit. I have a Japanese account, but I don't remember the credentials. Hopefully google does.
wow they got Wild Guns. Nice.
