2020 is the 35th birthday of the Super Mario series, and Nintendo is marking that event in a wide range of ways, one of which is the resurrection of its Game & Watch series of handhelds.
Nintendo is launching a Game & Watch which includes two Super Mario titles and some neat extras, all contained within a pocket-sized unit that includes a full-colour screen and rechargeable battery. It's sure to be a true collector's item, but it begs the question: what else could Nintendo do with this kind of device in the future?
Well, as luck would have it, 2021 marks the 35th birthday of the Zelda series, and Twitter user Olivier Pauwels has created a mock-up of what we hope Nintendo has planned for next year.
Can you imagine if the company did this for every one of its major franchises? Have mercy on our wallets!

I would love this plus a Super Mario Bros 3 one!
wow i need to start saving lol. gonna have to grab everything that comes out for this occasion.
I totally forgot it was the anniversary next year. Fingers crossed for BotW2 and maybe a port collection with slightly more effort put in.
Hell, do a anniversary one for Metroid and Kid Icarus bundled together since they were released around the same time.
I don't see why I'd have this when the Switch does a much better job. Definitely more of a collector's item instead of something people would use regularly.
Hopefully we can have Zelda 3D All Stars (with a better name) in the first half of 2021. Breath of the Wild 2 would be a nice holiday title but we'll see, might need a little longer.
35th anniversary already... It feels like Skyward Sword and Hyrule Historia came out yesterday.
I'll be getting this for sure, if it eventually exists.
That'd be awesome!
This would be so sweet
This is why we need the hackers to crack this
Make original G&W Zelda !
Imagine one with Metroid
If they do a Game and Watch with Zelda it BETTER have Zelda 2!
@nessisonett If they do an anniversary collection, it will probably be a re-release of the one they did on Gamecube, with the master quest Ocarina of Time, that's my guess.
Yes please. That is pretty much spot on.
@TG16_IS_BAE That would make sense, it is a good collection after all but Majora’s Mask is literally broken on the Cube. It would need some work.
If they put this out, I would probably bite if it had the Zelda G+W game included
@nessisonett Never played the cube version, how is it broken?
@TG16_IS_BAE Lag, sound bugs, occasional freezing. Nintendo definitely have a history of somewhat dodgy ports!
@nessisonett Oh wow, that's bad!
@Damo it's not real, you can't have it! We can help you if you let us
Always thought it's a wasted opportunity to not put the GB Game and Watch Gallery games on this system to celebrate Game and Watch's anniversary.
@jimtendog I know! Just imagine playing a game as huge as Breath of the Wild on the go!
I'd buy this one. They would HAVE to add the Zelda game and watch game too!
As a collector's item, it's fantastic. Other than that, this game aged poorly in comparison to most Nintendo titles from NES era. It's nearly unplayable without a piece of paper to track down your findings, plus obtuse secrets like "burn that specific bush among 100 others to reveal an entrance". Won't last more than five minutes of curiosity.
@TG16_IS_BAE they even put a warning on the initial loading screen about how it's not your system misbehaving, it's the game.
It's basically a very casual way of saying "this is a buggy emulator and the GC doesn't have enough juice to work with."
@Rhaoulos sure do. And this was the 25th anniversary way back in 2011.
@AlienX That's amazing! And stupifying. Wow.
I'd take this and a Zelda HD Collection of Wind Waker, Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword on Switch. 2/3 of the work is already done
....was he trying to write "believe in legends" in that mock-up? Anyway, yeah, I'd love that
for $50, I can't get excited for the Mario Bros one. It's really cool, but I'd never use it. Or barely use it.
I'd like it to have the actual Zelda game and watch game on it. That along with the CD-i trilogy are some of the hardest games to to find/play
@nessisonett not sure you’d get both. I think it will either be BOTW2 and maybe a similar 35th pack as Mario. If no new game an old fave might get a remake ala Links Awakening.
This will definitely happen, needs more gold though.
@ralphdibny that would need two screens though.
Zelda gets way more attention than Metroid every five years. I'd like to see it happen the other way around sometimes. The only time I've seen Nintendo even acknowledge Metroid's anniversary was when you could get some themes and items in Miitomo.
@DrDaisy miitomo
@Eel Thanks.
For anyone confused by Eel's reply, I previously said something like "that weird mobile game I don't remember the name of" and guessed Miitopia before looking it up and subsequently editing my post.
This is the first thing I thought of when I saw the Mario Game & Watch. Fingers crossed
I'd certainly get the Kirby's Adventure model
@Eel yeah I suppose youre right! Hopefully if there is an official model it comes with a pair of (8k 120hz OLED) displays so we can play Zelda game &watch
These are a rip-off though. The battery life is apparently very impressive, but how much battery would one need for NES games that can be completed in a single sitting? Who would actually play these? Yes, they're a cute novelty, but they're such a waste of resources.
I'm not keen on paying AU$80 for a bunch of dedicated handheld devices that can only play a couple of NES ROMs at best. Nintendo could have at least included the Super Mario Land games and the like for good measure. They should have have just launched a new budget-priced Game Boy that can take dedicated cartridges (perhaps the same shape as Switch cartridges so that they would be compatible with the Switch as well, but the new Game Boy wouldn't be able to play regular Switch cartridges, obviously).
Also a Kirby's Dream Land Game & Watch the year after that.
Eh, I'd much rather just have a full on remake (not remaster) of Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. If you don't know what the difference between a remake and remaster is look at the Demon's Souls remake and the Resident Evil remakes. It's basically rebuilding an older game with outdated graphics from the ground up. A remaster is taking the old game and adding new higher quality effects and textures, and maybe even new content. The OOT and MM remasters were great but a remake would be AWESOME.
@ralphdibny aah that made me imagine this: what if they released a simple 2-screen setup to make room for the game and watch Zelda, and made it so the NES game(s) show a status screen/map on the bottom screen when you play that.
@Eel that sounds pretty cool and way more logical than what I was imagining - legend of Zelda on top screen and Zelda 2: adventure of link on the bottom screen, played simultaneously possibly with one set of buttons controling both games 😅🤯
If they’re hackable I only need the first one. 😇
I really want to pick up the Mario game and watch, but I would literally kill for this one.
The original one was a double screen clamshell Game & Watch, while the original Super Mario Game & Watch was a single screen. If they were to stay true to form, it'd have to take a DS/3DS clamshell design.
@Kreko
They most likely would keep TWW and TP as individual releases, because they're more than likely to bring over the Wii U remasters over instead, so it'll be much like what they're doing with Super Mario 3D World.
@Dethmunk
TWW HD and TP HD are highly up for debate, ESPECIALLY since Nintendo is releasing Super Mario 3D World separately, as just another Wii U port.
Besides, one can argue that TP is technically a GAMECUBE game for that matter. If there's a Zelda game that truly defines the Wii, it's Skyward Sword.
Would love a Zelda Game and Watch hopefully they make The Legend of Zelda maker that would be awesome. Plus Skyward Sword remake!!
@Kimyonaakuma I don't know...I still play my Game and Watch Octopus regularly.
Pre ordered nintendo new game and watch smb1. If they sell all of limited edition mario bros, lol easy peasy lemon squeezey , I can't see why nintendo won't release zelda G&W next year. Zelda is every bit as important as Mario. I haven't played the first zelda. Twilight Princess is sublime. So yes please to zelda,nintendo!
So very very sad this never happened. I feel like the smb game and watch didn’t sell very well though since I see them piled up at retail stores everywhere.
This aged well
@Luigi_Skywalker cheer up its a reality hehe
@Castmovie987565 I know! I preordered it the day I found out
