Unboxing something old brand new in box is something many of us dream of. Well, that's why our very own Zion leapt at the opportunity to buy a "sealed" original DMG Game Boy for, in his words, too much money.
The problem arises when you learn that there was no one reliable method of 'sealing' an original Game Boy; some had shrink wrap, some were simply taped, and some were supposedly just not sealed at all on the factory end.
Irrespective of that, this particular unit has been hidden away for quite some time, and, as you'll see from the video above, this kind of hardware doesn't always stand the test of time.
Check out the video and see Zion holding his breath as he unboxes this mysterious beastie right before your very eyes.

You coulda sold it for extreme amounts of currency. But what the hell, nostalgia forever
I feel like you just lost a lot of money on an easy sale, but I guess money can't buy the happiness of opening this thing new in 2021--except . . .
TheRelaxingEnd is still the absolute best at making unboxings seem like the coolest kind of YT content honestly
@TheSmashTheorist Spoiler, but no they couldn't - it was used and resealed
I remember saving up for a Gameboy when I left school and would pop into Dixon’s every Friday after work and look at it in the glass case. A YTS wage took me ages to afford it 😄
Sorry, man. That sucks. Seeing those disgusting batteries in it was sore. But hey at least you're the guy that opens it to prevent someone else getting swindled
@MattAllsopp those were the good days.
"I was to become a GOD!!!"
Wesker: "That right is now MINE!!!"
Oh Zion I watched this out of sympathy. At least it works.
Man, that hurt to watch, I feel terrible for Zion rn
I love it when people comment on a video without watching said video....
Dude that sucked. My Heart hurts for you. The only equivalency I can think of is begging and pleading for something for x-mas the entire year like n64 only to get a ***** used tiger handheld game. And you can't even rage about it because your parents are watching and expecting you to be excited.
That sucks, Zion.
I have that box myself, but it's missing the earphones and the styrofoam lid is cracked. But the rest is in good condition. The box is great for display.
To answer the question at the end of the video...YES, I would absolutely like to see more stuff like this. Obviously you can’t do something like this every day but this was entertaining. I wish it would have worked out better in the end. I was actually surprised at some of the stuff that was included in the box.
I actually own a complete-in-box never-used Game Boy. Everything's perfect except the box which is heavily discolored, like it's all blue and grey.
The funny thing is that I found it for a very cheap price in 2008 (20€), sold by an old owner of a stationery store
Look on the bright side. Now you have a project for slight restoration....and the scratched screen lens popped right off for you to get you started. Nice to see that it works at least. I wonder if the screen has any dead lines. My old Game Boy developed lines really badly, both ways. And it was only after a few years. I can't complain too much as I was lucky to get a lost Game Boy that was never claimed(and we did try) in early 1990. That's how I never got Tetris as it had Mario Land in it. And it's why I never got to unbox one of those DMGs.
wah wah, so is he going to go back to the seller?
@Darknilious yep the look of being shafted was a classic
Hmm. The question at the end of the video...not in the slightest. Plenty of unboxing videos on YT, and you can find out what most of them look like inside via Google Image search. Not sure what's to be gained by forking out a fortune to make content that's already out there.
He handled that much better than I would have...
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO YOUR RUijJNIDVMwoa IT.
I remember getting one of those boxes the first Christmas it was out. That was such an amazing little machine with a headache inducing blurry screen, but man did I play a lot of great games on it. Link's Awakening, Super Mario Land 2, Final Fantasy Legend III are still some of my favorite games, despite (or perhaps because) of their simplicity.
But I am not going to lie, I was very happy when I opened up the Super Game Boy a few Christmases after that one.
Funnily enough, just yesterday, I was wondering where my game boy was since we just moved to a new house. I looked in all the boxes it could've been in and im not seeing it 😳. I'll tear this house apart if I have to, to find that little thing lol
At this point; you can't trust anything as "Factory Sealed" anymore. ANYTHING. If you pay more than CIB prices you are being ripped off. Most everything advertised as such is faked/resealed these days and there is just no way to know for sure before most likely wasting your money on buying it. DON'T DO IT--or support the scammers.
@GrailUK @cf5 @Rohanrocks88 Appreciate it! It's really quite alright though. I've been bracing myself to be disappointed by it for a while, but still had a shard of hope left in me that it'd be brand spanking new inside! Sadly that wasn't the case but I'm glad I was able to share the experience with you all!
I recently bought an N64 Transfer Pak and Rumble Pak still sealed in their boxes.
Australian versions too.
@BoFiS lmao whats the point? Its not like he went to a Target or Best Buy to buy it. The dude he got it from will just claim ignorance and say no buy-backs. There's nothing Zion can do other than just never trust anything like that at a garage sale again
@BoFis @drewber2635 The way the package was taped together should have been a telling sign for me, but the excitement I had finding this out in the wild overrode my brain and I just really should have known better.
Plus, the seller could have genuinely been honest, maybe they were the ones who were had! But thankfully now that it's been opened, no one has to be swindled again by this Game Boys tricks.
Scant consolation I guess, but you made a nice video. Better luck next time.
I don’t judge any collector, but my philosophy is that games and consoles are meant to be played and enjoyed.
I don’t see any point whatsoever keeping games and consoles unopened, it completely defeats their purpose, if all you want to do is look at them, keep your money in the bank and look at photos on the internet.
For me the best middle-ground with these things is to buy used games complete in the boxes. I have several near-mint condition games and such that have been opened but still make nice decoration pieces. In fact, I have a complete in box Gameboy like this too. Might be my favorite retro handheld of all time.
Glad you guys found and unboxed it, I've been there and it's a surprisingly fun experience, although I'm sure many hardcore collectors shrieked when you tore the plastic off. Before covid 19 hit (you know, when public gatherings were still a thing) I would explore flea markets in hopes of finding things like this. Sucks it wasn't exactly in preem shape though. At least you have the box.
@Ziondood Watching your video made me feel like doodoo, but nice job keeping your frustration bottled up. I would have released a 10 minute swearing combo.
I can teach you a whole language made for swearing for your next unboxing. According to a great character in a bad sequel, speaking it is like wiping your arse with silk. Hopefully you won't ever need to swear.
ah. Keep on trusting though! Maybe you could get this modded up all crazy.
I do have an original 89 GB and the box, mine was played to death but STILL works, amazing hardware.
@impurekind except you can wait and open it in 2022
Happy 2021! 😂 Hopefully this isn't a sign of things to come for the rest of the year. I feel your pain!!
so sorry about that Zion! you’re a brave soul!
on the other hand, at least you have the original box with all the instruction booklets, game link cable, and headphones!
don’t know how much of “too much money” you paid but I’d pay a decent amount of money for the original Game Boy with its original box and all of its contents.
Aww, dude, that sucked. I'm sorry. Just fyi, some of the original inserts seemed to be missing too. Mine includes a big ad for Nintendo Power, a warranty card, an ad for a rechargeable battery pack, etc.
Believe me, thirty years ago wasn’t that great, but retro gaming is!
Don’t let this put you off collecting or enjoying retro games 😝
Every single sealed one I've seen have an outer shrink wrap with the standard blue Nintendo logo print running across the bottom. There is no such thing as inconsistency in production. if it wasn't sealed in shrink wrap it wouldn't be able to be displayed in a store.
@CapitalQ oh ok
go back and brick the c**ts windows
