Update: The website now appears to be restored, but obviously not for long...
Original Story: When Mario's 35th anniversary comes to a close next week, the online services for Super Mario Maker on the Wii U also end - meaning players will no longer be able to upload their own courses.
As you might recall, Super Mario Maker's Bookmark website was closing on 31st March as well. It seems Nintendo has instead pulled the plug on the web service ahead of schedule.
Super Mario Maker fan and Nintendo Life reader Nintendo_Thumb notes how the "website went down 4 days early" and has been down since at least 26th March. The website says the "service is currently unavailable" and now shows a 503 error.
So, if you were hoping to visit the site one last time before it was terminated, it seems you might be out of luck. Here's the full list of Super Mario Maker services impacted:
Services that will end (Super Mario Maker - Wii U)
- The ability to upload courses in Super Mario Maker for Wii U
- The Super Mario Maker Bookmark website
Due to this, the following features within the software’s Course World will also become unavailable:- Updating the ranking of liked courses
- Looking up your bookmarked courses
And just to make it clear, Super Mario Maker 2 will not be impacted in any way by this, and will still be operating as normal after this date. Are you sad to see the original Super Mario Maker wrap up? Tell us down below.

No Surprises here this would eventually happen.
Really unfortunate for the two dozen people who still have their Wii U connected.
Hey cool, you got my message. I was all ready to play and record a few hundred more levels in the next few days but they shut it down early. No big deal I guess, but it's still a bummer. I wish they had said something sooner.
The beginning of the end...
Nintendo is starting Mario hunting season early.
I really don’t see the reason why Nintendo didn’t just make the levels available on mario maker 2 from the get go or after a short period of time.
waves bell THE END IS NEAR, THE END IS NEAR, THE EEEEND IS NEEEEEAAAAAR
Oh no I thought I had until the 31st. I’m waiting for my eBay copy. Does anyone know of a website which lists the best courses?
@Nintendo_Thumb thank you for all of your many recordings, they helped me compile an ID/video spreadsheet of one course per costume since that is the main feature Mario Maker 2 lacks: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1WIxsX5yvglsAMVMr9KXYHq23d776eFEtUGmxZuTCQSc/edit
Even without bookmark site at least it’s possible to type in IDs for now.
Such a shame the did use that sight for Mario Maker 2
I like Mario but I don't care to be honest. I didn't even buy Super Mario 3D All-Stars, ports of three very old games without any extra content for $60? No, thanks! I was expecting some small discount, at least 30% before pulling it out of the Store, they did not make it and I don't care anymore. I'll not support greed of this company anymore. I've bought Game&Watch and it's great btw.
@Doofenshmirtz goes completly mad!
Last year i bought a Elgato 60 S, and recorded all my own Wii U levels and uploaded them to YouTube.
Also did a backup of the levels from Wii U including all Event levels.
I did it because web site were going down.
Oh no! I actually made it onto the Bookmark website after one of my levels was featured (although not played) in Arino-Kachō’s Mario Maker Showcase! It was the closest I’ve got to Nintendo fame. MY GLITTERING CAREER IS OVERRRRRRR!!!!
The end has arrived.
Ripperoni in pepperoni
That's not cool, Nintendo shouldn't be lying to the public like that... that's false advertising! 💢
Bowser sure is working hard to get rid of Mario fast, isn’t he?
So what happens to the unsold copies sitting
on shop shelves? I assume they don't self explode, so do the shops return them to Nintendo, to be crushed? Or are they going to remain on sale, and Nintendo has egg on its face.
@TheLightSpirit
1. find good creators
2. follow
3. profit
@zool I presume any brand new copies still on sale have long since been added to the bargain bin, and as for secondhand copies well I suppose the game does still allow you to create your own courses... 🤷🏼♂️
@TheLightSpirit I agree. I always preferred the creator content from LittleBigPlanet players. It didn’t feel like people set out to create difficult levels, with no sense of the player in mind. In my mind, it’s something like the people who create coasters in Roller Coaster Tycoon, just to see them fly off the track and kill park guest. 😂
@TheLightSpirit I was a coaster fanatic growing up. When I would go to amusement parks, it was mainly about the coasters and thrill rides. That mentality stuck with me in digital form, too! 😂 I remembered getting some kind of compilation pack. It was RTC3 (after I got rid of the original. The bugs really hurt the game) and it included the water park and zoo expansions. I briefly flirted with the water park stuff and I never looked into the zoo aspect. I bought RCT 3 last year, on the Switch and it got me curious about other games like this. Maybe a Sim City type game. If you have any recommendations, send them my way!
The website is back now.
It was up this morning but It's down again
