NPD sales tracking data has revealed Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury has experienced a strong start in the US, in terms of sales. In its launch month of February, the game was ranked as the best-selling game and the second best-selling game of 2021. Notably, this doesn't include its digital sales.
Here it is in the words of NPD analyst, Mat Piscatella. The best-selling game of the year so far goes to the latest Call of Duty.
"Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury debuts as the best-selling game of February. The title also ranks as the 2nd best-selling game of 2021 year-to-date, despite the lack of digital sales tracking for Nintendo published titles."
Keep in mind, no sales figures have been provided. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Animal Crossing: New Horizons were also in the top ten best-sellers of February 2021.
Super Mario 3D World appears to have been just as successful in other regions. In Japan, the game launched in the top spot on the charts and is estimated to have sold 250,000 physical copies in the first few days. Over the UK, sales were reportedly 190% more than the Wii U original, and the game was labelled 2021's fastest-selling release.

It's absolutely amazing!! Love it so much
I wonder about Sony's reaction toward Switch sales that overshadowing PS5 sales.
The game that made to please both Japanese and Western audiences (Nintendo) vs the games that only cater Western audiences but abandon Japanese audiences (Sony current situation).
This game is so much fun. Nintendo magic 100%!
@Quarth Agreed.
It’s a brilliant game, there’s nothing whatsoever on any other console that can touch it for pure fun.
@HamatoYoshi that’s the key word - fun. It just puts a smile on your face even if you fall off the edge down to your own stupidity. Every time I die in it I don’t get mad, I just laugh. It’s just so well put together.
Am just glad this games getting a second chance and is smashing it. It’s a great game and I doubled dip and got no regrets 😊
And this is why Nintendo keeps asking full price for these ports.
I contributed to 2 physical copies. It was already one of my favorite Wii U games and now with portability and local wireless play, makes it even better.
@sanderev Yeah. No doubt. But I’d say they made it worth it with this one cause it wasn’t a straight port and added a bunch. Some of their other WiiU ports didn’t add as much. Though I’m still not sure I’ll buy it cause I have it on the WiiU.
@roboshort I did buy it, even though I have it on Wii U as well. And I am still loving it. The updates they made to 3D World and addition of Bowser's fury make it worth it.
I bought it just for bowsers fury.
Loved it all the way. Great game
@sanderev I do not appreciate nintendo's pricing on their slightly remastered ports. Buying those overpriced games people condone such uncommercial behaviour
@sanderev This one is actually worth the money with Bowser's Fury, online play, faster speed, improved controls, new moves, multiplayer Captain Toad and other Quality of Life additions added to it.
Pikmin 3 I think was overpriced and definitely the Miitopia 3DS port that's coming. 😬
@Anti-Matter it's out of stock every time some new stock comes back in, if the stock was there then it would outsell the switch. But we are going to be waiting around a year for regular stock
Can’t wait for...
Xenoblade chronicles x
Paper Mario colour splash
Yoshi Wolly world
Nes remix
Wind waker HD.
Twilight princess HD.
SM3DW has been my best gaming purchase in quite some time. I love the level design and the mix between 3D and 2D concepts.
And as I had never played it before, that's a completely new experience for me. An excellent game!
Well deserved too. In contrast to the Pikmin 3 port they’ve really put some effort into it. Bowsers Fury is almost worth £40 on its own.
The second best selling game within two months. I'm sorry, was I supposed to be impressed by this? Lmao
I want to know the actual numbers of the units sold, not just that it is number 1.
Love how Nintendo keeps killing it with their games! I've been on the fence about getting this.
This may have been answered before but is this a game that can be perfectly enjoyed solo? Or is it designed to be best enjoyed with people in person? Seeing the marketing push for multiplayer gave me the impression the best experience is with people. It's like how Smash Ultimate is for me. Love that game BUT I know I don't get the maximum experience because I have nobody to play with. I do play online from time to time but I can't sustain it because I just get so annihilated it gets old. That bums me out so I was worried 3D World would be a similar experience for me.
Still haven’t picked it up. I’m currently playing Galaxy. Even more fun today than it was when I played it on the Wii. Speaking of, a remaster of the Wii Mario RPG, would be a day one purchase! I LOVE that game! I didn’t know people despised it, until Origami King came out. I never play the GameCube entry, so I can’t compare. All I know is that it was one of my most memorable Wii experiences!
@UltimateOtaku91 I’m not sure it would outsell, there’s literally no software for the PS5
More than deserved and I'm thrilled this game got a second chance to get the recognition from consumers that it deserved. As a big PlayStation fans as well I'm also happy to see Spider-Man: Miles Morales still selling well. Really enjoyed it even if it's not a full sequel.
@Ganner It can be enjoyed solo of course, I loved the game, completed it 100%, but it is more fun in coop. The level design works for single player, but because it's so spacious, it easily accommodates up to 4 players. I only played it a few times with 4 players, spent most of my time just playing with my wife, it was simply a blast. Revisited many of the levels again to 100% it will all characters.
Solo: enjoyable and fun, due to great level design and creativity in this game.
Coop: Best way to play, because of the shared experience, the funny moments, etc.
@HamatoYoshi ps5 was biggest selling console in UK in Feb when stock came in. And I seem to have plenty to play on it. Strange 🤷
Mario is hip again!
Gosh, and yet people did nothing but moan and say they aren't paying £50 for it and the DLC is too short lol (I can remember the same people saying the same about Pokemon too not that long ago).
@Serialsid plenty of PS4 games!
@HamatoYoshi well yes, but also plenty of ps5 games and enhanced ps4 games that take advantage of the dualsense. Oh and the 10 games they've dropped on psplus the last 3 months.
@Serialsid but realistically apart from Demons Souls ( which in itself is a port ) there’s actually very little PS5 content out there
@TsukiDeity Thanks for the response! I may get around to it down the line. I skipped the Switch release of New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe for that same reason though. A lot of the sales pitch for it was multiplayer based and again I didn't want to have a inferior experience. I was a lot younger man back in the Wii era and got the full experience of New Super Mario Bros Wii. I had a gamer girlfriend, shared (and individually) a lot of friends and played in groups a lot. Fast forward many years to present day, my significant other hates games and life has swallowed friends as usual LOL. So in other words its just me so I tend to not be in a rush for those games that are best experienced with a room of people. Smash Ultimate is a exception cause its so awesome however it sucks that I can't get the experience its meant to give.
@HamatoYoshi Yeah Demon Souls, Godfall, bugsnax, Destruction Allstars and Maquette are the only ps5 only games. But games like Sackboy, Assassins creed Valhalla, Hitman 3, COD, Fifa, madden, Dirt 5 and Control UE are all better versions on the 5. And games like spiderman MM at 60fps with RT, COD at 120fps, WRC9 with the dualsense features all make it a better experience.
Resident Evil 8, returnal, deathloop and ratchet and clank are coming in the next few months, so plenty of reasons on own a ps5.
Plenty of reasons to own a switch as well, loads of good games coming. 🙂
@Anti-Matter Of course the Switch is selling more then PS5 and Series X as trying to actually find one of those to buy is near impossible right now without luck. Also there's barely anything of note on PS5 and SX what you can't get anywhere else with most of the big releases still being on last gen machines and in good quality making the jump less tempting. Finally the Switch is still the perfect console for dealing with Covid and has a healthy line of games on it this side of the year with 3D World, Monster Hunter Rise and Pokemon Snap.
Switch sold between 615,000 and 735,000 units last month in the US alone, which means sales increased 75-115% YoY. It's entirely possible that it outsold PS5 and XBS combined.
@sanderev I GENERALLY agree with this sentiment about ports... but Bowser's Fury is very close to a full game add on (its length isn't far off from the original Luigis Mansion or Star Fox). It justified the double dip for me.
I'll get it eventually, it'll be my third double dipping on the Switch. Wonder where's all the people that said this game wouldn't sell well.
@Dman10 Nintendo is going to release its financials for this quarter to the public in May, which include sales figures.
@WiltonRoots,
Yes it's got that fine balance between slightly mad and chuck your pad at the T.V screen just right.
Despite playing Super Mario 3D World on the Wii U, the simple fact that it's 1. an amazing game and 2. has decent add-on content over the original means I'll likely make another purchase down the line. It's been a few years since I've played the original, and I'm starting to get the itch to revisit it again!
@WallyWest,
Manufacturing issues and lack of components will be affecting all three consoles, and let's be honest here, both Sony and Microsoft are not in a rush to sell millions of extra consoles at a loss, even more so when there are no massive next generation releases to recoup some of that money.
Its a great package! I’m actually glad I wasn’t stubborn because I played the Wii U version. Also. Nobody answered these questions for me. So I found them out on my own.
Luigi Bros. is still in the game. So its technically three games on the cartridge!
Using the Cat Mario or Cat Peach amiibo will not remove the sparkles from the stars on your save file.
@johnvboy don't think there are any component shortages for the switch. But the semiconductor shortages and AMD problems are affecting the other two! Oh and I think both want to sell as many as they can for the subscriptions. But hey, I'm sure all three billion dollar companies will do just fine 🙂.
I like this game and it's no surprise it's the best-selling of 2021 since there's not much competition to beat...
I am glad more people are playing it. I enjoyed the original on Wii U.
@WiltonRoots While they work on the sequel to the single-player Mario series, they better also start working on the sequel for the Classic-Mario-in-3D series too.
@John_Deacon I think it definitely deserves a sequel.
I found the first two/three single-player Marios intriguing at first but my interest died by the time Galaxy 2 came — I missed the classic Mario gameplay mechanics: non-timed power ups, shrinking, multiplayer, etc.
3D Land/World is a dream come true.
@TsukiDeity The family-oriented trailer for this game reminds me a lot of the NES box art back then (though its weird seeing both players seem to be playing at the same time).
For me, this is what defines a Mario game — a fun family game.
My interest in the single player Marios died by the time Galaxy 2 came and I haven't touched Odyssey.
If only they could've added at least the classic take-turns multiplayer or came up with a fun tag-team multiplayer mechanics.
And I find the classic Mario mechanics translated to 3D in 3D Land/World/Bowser's Fury much more fun than the mechanics the 1P Marios have.
These top 10/20 charts don't mean anything if they're not counting digital sales. It's inaccurate data.
@Ganner I actually prefer it solo - I find it a bit confusing in multiplayer as sometimes I think I’m another player (especially if we are all cats!) then go to jump but accidentally die because I was actually a different character 😂😂 It is hilarious in multiplayer though for things like this but another problem can be if you all want to go in different directions and the game puts you into a bubble because you were trying to go somewhere else to collect a star or something like that
@Clyde_Radcliffe How can you tell the Miitopia port is overpiced? For the fact that it A: Isn't a port (it's a remake) and B. you haven't played it.
Also there are / were enough people complainig about the price of 3D World + Bowser's Fury.
@Firesnake Nintendo is still a company and especially with Wii U games they never fully have gotten their investments back on these games. So re-releasing and pricing these games like full price on the Switch (their most popular system since the Wii) is absolutely a way to do that.
For instance Mario Kart 8 deluxe only had small improvements (2nd item, some new racers and a new battle mode) but it's still the most sold Switch game.
Nintendo building a massive war chest of money this generation, no doubt about that.
@Anti-Matter I don’t think you can find PS5s to buy, so that’s one reason you can’t really compare. Also, they are significantly different. Switch is a hand held system that relies on ports. These ports wouldn’t sell as well if Switch was just a home console. While some might be only to buy one, I think somebody who buys one over the other are looking for different things.
@Amin_Parker absolutely. Sony can’t just release a 4k version of Gods of War and charge full price. And it’s not because GOW is a lesser game than Pikmin 3. There’s too much competition for new big releases and Sony/MS fans aren’t willing to pay whatever the price tag says. Sony has to spend $100 million plus on a new big release. Nintendo can spend 1/100 on an HD port and get full price.
My first time playing it and I’m absolutely loving my time. My girlfriend can play with me and lose all my lives and still have fun and it’s just great. Plus I got the cat amiibos just cause! Got it physical as I do w bigger titles;)
Meanwhile, dust continues to collect on the Switches of Wii U owners......
@Incoherent1 I'm a Wii U owner. There's no dust on my Switch....
AND IT DESERVES IT! I was one of those purchases and it's the best $60 I've spent in a while. I love Mario games, loved 3D Land, and this has lived up to my expectations 100%. Haven't touched Bowser's Fury yet (am trying to 100% 3D World first, am pretty close, in Star World with all levels golden flag, 3 stars, and stamp on every previous level, still have to play through the others with characters other than Mario though) but I'm looking forward to getting to it!
But is it worth selling the Wii U version though
@RendellDraw I hear you, I loved galaxy and odyssey, but that single player experience was never and will never be as fun as 3D world was with my wife and/or friends. Sharing that experience with my significant other or friends really makes the game shine more for me. I will continue to buy stellar single player Mario games, however I would always be hoping they more a new fun multiplayer Mario game in the future.
Actually an incredible game I was so impressed. Lots of post game content and the final world is absolutely insane
