This year sure is zooming along, rather like a rather iconic video game character that was once the ultimate rival of Mario. These are relatively good times for Sonic, the most recent high profile platforming game starring the mascot was the brilliant Sonic Mania, and a movie starring Jim Carrey as Dr Eggman Robotnik was successful enough to get the green light for a sequel; that'll arrive next year.
Of course, looming on the horizon is the official 30th Anniversary of the original classic, and while only sadists would hope for an event on the scale of awfulness that was the 25th Anniversary party, a Summer game release of some sort would go down well. There are various rumours kicking around already, including a Sonic Colors Remaster and the return of Sonic 3 & Knuckles, with Sonic 3 having seemingly been held back in recent-ish times by reported music rights issues.
We have that traditional source of leaks, French retailer listings, suggesting that the latter rumour of an easy-to-do but popular Sonic Collection could indeed be inbound. It certainly makes a lot of sense, as it's a way to give older gamers like this humble scribe a nostalgia kick, while introducing younger players to the classics.
As for what games could be included (apart from, hopefully, Sonic 3), who knows? The Sonic Mega Collection on the GameCube - and especially its Plus variant on PS2 and Xbox - set a pretty high standard in terms of the pure volume of games. Sonic Classic Collection was a neat but slightly flawed port of the 16-bit games on DS, and there are all sorts of SEGA collections, 3D re-releases on 3DS and more that include plenty of Sonic games.
If this Sonic Collection does come to pass we'll be intrigued to see what SEGA has to offer; remember, Sonic is cool again. It sure is good to be able to say that.

TIll I see it i'm not getting my hopes up.
"the most recent high profile platforming game starring the mascot was the brilliant Sonic Mania" and wasn't even developed by Sonic Team...
A Sonic Collection is a safe bet for the 30th anniversary. Hardly a surprise. I hope it's comprehensive this time, though. And physical.
Unless it has the Sonic Adventure games included, hard to see how it would be anything special.
I just want Colours man
@Franklin Yeah, I'd hope it'd have 2D and 3D games from the series, as I said in the article the 'Mega Collection' from years ago had a heck of a lot of varied games included.
@Dragwhite Same, been saying it on this site for two years.
If they add the adventure games i hope they fix the many bugs, the controls AND the camera. I also really hope they rerelease sonic and all stars racing (and transformed), they are so so so so much better than sonic team racing.
@Snatcher Its such a good Sonic game, I have a personal bias towards the DS version but the Wii version is also a gem.
@SleepyAnimal "I'm going to prepare myself for underwhelming news and assume it'll just be Sonic 3&K"
The release of arguably the greatest Genesis game on Switch is exactly what I want.
@Entrr_username and was 4 years ago!
Hopefully a collection with games that aren't just the "Death Egg Trilogy". The handheld games and some of the 3D titles would be good.
I'm hoping for a brand new game too but I have a feeling it's going to be "Sonic the hedgehog, the movie, the game" which could be great but equally, could be a disaster.
I mean, why the hell not flog a dead horse. It's not like I have 5 different versions of Sonic 1 over various consoles already.
And of course I will buy it as I will always be a Sonic Kid
God, this could be so good. I'm hoping for at least the combined contents of the Mega Collection + and Gems Collection, and hopefully a bit more. I'd kill to finally get a port of Chaotix to something other than the 32x, and who knows what else they'll have. Maybe they'll finally bring SegaSonic to a home platform, maybe we'll get the Advance Trilogy, who knows? Maybe, if they're feeling really generous, they'll even throw in some of the really niche stuff the only the most hardcore will care about. I can completely see Sega throwing in the old Sega Cafe mobile games as unlockables, and I'd adore that to no end. Hell, if they really want to go deep, they could always throw in the old Tiger Handheld games! I'll be getting this day one, assuming that it at least lives up to the offerings on the Gamecube.
Would love to see Chaotix and Sonic CD. Also include the Dreamcast 1st Sonic Adventure.
But this is Sega we are talking about. Think of the worst (and non Logical) possible reveal, and that is probably what we will get.
There is less chance of being disappointed with a Nintendo Direct than a Sega reveal
Oh boy golly gee! I’m so so excited for yet another collection of sonic games that is most likely not going to include Sonic 3 and S&K. How about a new Sonic game instead? Mania 2 perhaps?!
Or maybe Sega could finally port heavily requested games like Persona to the platform instead!
"the most recent high profile platforming game starring the mascot" was Sonic Forces, a couple of months after Mania.
But was totally forgettable (it wasn't even bad), so I understand if no one remembers it.
It would have to have a lot of games on to tempt me - I have the old ones especially one and two on about 4000 different collections and platforms.
So let’s hope they actually give this proper treatment not like the illogical recent Mario one.
Give me Chaotix, Sonic Pocket Adventure and Generations (HD, not 3D) and I’ll consider it. At a stretch, Sonic ‘06, Unleashed HD and the 2 Rivals games, to finish off the ones that missed Nintendo consoles.
What i want 1-3 sonic knuckles plus lockon combined version. Sonic Cd , sonic 3d. Adventure 1 and 2. Heroes. Colours. Generations and the advance games. Chaotix would be good too.
What we will get 1 and 2 ,3d , game gear sonics, mean beam machine and Spinball and groan fighters.
I'd be OK with two separate collections if they included these games:
Collection 1 - Sonic 1-3, Knuckles, CD, Master System and Game Gear games, Knuckles Chaotix, Sonic Pocket Adventure, Sonic Advance 1-3 and Sonic Rush 1 & 2.
Collection 2 - Sonic Adventure 1 & 2, Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations.
Whatever it is they do, I'd much rather have a really-well polished collection than just a dump of however many games they can be bothered with. Make it something nice, rather than just a token gesture to raise a little bit of cash, even if it means fewer games.
Not too excited, almost every Sega collection tends to have the exact same games.
I 100% expect Sonic 1 & 2 despite redundancy with Sega Ages.
I just hope that Sonic 3 & Knuckles is included because it's the best Sonic game, in my opinion.
I like @BionicDodo's idea, a 2D collection and a 3D collection but it seems that 3D games will be released separately if the Sonic Colours listing was correct.
Maybe? Sonic games are a dime a dozen. There was something really neat about Mega Collection on GameCube but since then the games are on everything and are not that special anymore.
Generations on Switch would be pretty great. It is probably the greatest game and I always wondered why they left that format to go on to Lost World, Boom and Forces
How about a nostalgia kick for those of us who love Sega IPs NOT named "Sonic" for a change? You know, introduce younger players to classics whose names we haven't heard uttered by them for years or decades, like Shining Force, Shinobi, Skies of Arcadia, Dragon Force, all those amazing Arcade coin-ops, and so many more.
It feels like every year Sega "celebrates" something or other for Sonic. Meanwhile they're leaving TONS of money on the table by not listening to the fans of their other franchises.
@AtlanteanMan Agreed. Where's the Streets of Rage collection? I know they're on the SEGA Megadrive Classics collection, but apparently that has some input lag. I would like M2 to put some love into the trilogy and have it sit beside my SoR4 icon.
As far as Sonic goes, I have M2's Sonic 1 & 2 and Sonic Mania, I'm satisfied with that. 3&K is the only thing I would consider, but if the music is replaced I might skip it anyway.
I'd love a truly definitive collected edition that includes games like Sonic the Fighters and Sonic R. Fingers crossed. But yes, very much echoing others in wishing Sega would give a much more (or, y'know...ANY) love to its other franchises.
If it’s coming to switch then I would want
Sonic 2 Mobile, Sonic 3&K, Sonic CD Mobile, Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes, Sonic Rivals, Sonic Rivals 2, Sonic Advance Trilogy, Sonic R, Sonic the Fighters, Sonic 3D Blast (Saturn), Sonic 8Bit, Sonic 2 8Bit, Sonic Chaos, Sonic Triple Trouble, Knuckles Chaotix, Sonic Drift 2, Sonic Dash.
I would also want Sonic Unleashed, Sonic UnWiished, Sonic Generations, Sonic 2006, Sonic 4, but I think that would be too many huge games.
I also doubt they’d go through all the trouble of porting the DS games.
Sonic 1 also doesn’t need to be ported again, even if they use the mobile remake.
I'd like to see games that were not included in Mega Collection and Gems Collection. For example SegaSonic the Hedgehog (featuring Ray and Mighty) , Sonic Eraser (featuring horrible music), and maybe even some cancelled prototypes such as SegaSonic Bros.
@EarthboundBenjy "Sonic Eraser (featuring horrible music)" hahaha!
2002:“There’s no way they wouldn’t include Sonic CD”
2009There’a no way they wouldn’t include Sonic 3&K combined” 2018“There’s no way they wouldn’t include Sonic 3 and/or Sonic & Knuckles”
Their past efforts show this will probably be a massive letdown.
@Entrr_username Neither was Sonic Boom and that didn't stop people from tearing that game apart (deservedly). So I think a game not made by Sonic Team still deserves credit on it's own and not just another argument against Sonic Team or whatever.
My dream scenario is that we get Christian Whitehead versions of Sonic 1, 2, CD, 3 & Knuckles, all of which are improved from their mobile versions with additions like being able to toggle Sonic's abilities on/off (including Spin Dash, Super Peel-Out, Insta-Shield, and Drop Dash), the ability to choose to play as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Mighty, or Ray, and finally, Mania's multiplayer mode that lets you choose any stage for up to 4 players and Time Trial that starts the timer when you boost through the starting line. All of this available for $40-50, and gets a physical release that I can put next to Mania Plus.
All I need is S1, 2, 3 and S&K in this collection. After that, I'd prefer having the 3D titles remade or having remakes (specially Adventure 1 & 2).
It'll probably be a collection of all the Genesis/Mega Drive Sonic games with a few Game Gear and SMS Sonic games added to the mix all over again. We all know Sega would never give us the Taxman versions or any of the 3D Sonic games. They had been feeding us the same Sonic collection for decades now since the Saturn release and they are not changing that any time soon. I would be amaze to see a Sonic 3D Collection but knowing Sega they probably won't deliver it like all the broken promises they hype up but still had not deliver.
A Sonic 2D Collection would need to have Sonic 1, 2, 3, Knuckles, the lock-on variants, CD, Knuckles' Chaotix, 4 Ep. I & II, the GG/SMS games, Pocket Adventure, the Advance series. It'll be a bonus if they include Mania Plus.
I'd get it just for Knuckles' Chaotix alone. What's holding back a re-release of that game?
Of course we'd also need a 3D Collection.
@HammerGalladeBro How dare you forget Rush, Rush Adventure, Colors, and Generations, but include Sonic 4?
I'm both amazed and somewhat amused by all the folks complaining about which Sonic games haven't seen remakes or been part of a given collection. At least you guys get SOMETHING related to the franchise you want from Sega on a regular basis; those of us who've been hoping (and believe me, ASKING) for the return of so many other great IPs for two decades (or longer in many cases) since the demise of Sega consoles rarely ever seem to catch a break. Even when it happens, Sega tends to outsource them to other publishers (examples: Streets of Rage 4, Panzer Dragoon Remake) or they require a Kickstarter to exist (Shenmue 3) because they seem to have no interest in bothering with them themselves.
It seems there are two types of Sega fans: those who complain that they never release anything other than Sonic (or Yakuza and Atlus titles), and those who complain because the latest Sonic game/compilation wasn't/didn't include the specific entry they wanted. Both groups tend to say the same things regarding expectations from Sega, namely that they keep their expectations low so as not to be let down yet again.
I understand that fan communities can be overly demanding and sometimes toxic, but there are some cases where the criticisms are more than justified. Listening to your customers means more than just churning out another installment of the same IP that happens to sell well year after year (and Sega is far from alone in that particular regard). If there is any videogame publisher in dire need of a PR change, it's Sega. And looking back on their fall from being one of the industry's most prolific and outstanding publishers to abandoning the console business and in turn the vast majority of the franchises that once made them a household name, it's no one's fault but theirs.
@KayFiOS i didn't forget them, I just didn't want to mention them. I'm not a big fan of the boost-based games.
@AtlanteanMan It's not worth much considering Sega has said this before, and not followed through, but their recently published plan calls for use of older IPs
I'm probably in the extreme minority here, but I'd love a Lost World 2. But with more focused level design. That is to say just go with the full 3D design of that game (and add a little polish) but drop the 2D, sliding board levels, parkour mechanics and anything else that stood out as a distraction from the core game. That Lost World could have been great but they tried to do too many things and ended up not doing any of them as good as they could have.
I just want Sonic to go away. Most of the games are trash why can’t Sonic just die in peace? He’s a has-been. 30 years of mediocre games should tell you that there’s no saving this blue disaster.
::In a Regina George Voice from mean girls:: Stop trying to make Sonic happen! It’s never gonna happen!
@Tendogamerxxx Boo! Don't be such a hater! Although I can agree with you on the ridiculousness of how hard Sega has milked Sonic for all he's worth. After Forces, I did think that they should park the franchise for five years to give Sonic Team time to think about what they've done. And to come up with a solid plan for their next game rather than just going crazy with any idea that pops into their demented little mind (see my post above for more of how I feel). So I think Sonic would benefit from making less appearances, but I don't want him to totally go away.
It needs something pretty special to stand out from previous collections and all the other games that have been available individually for years.
@BrintaPap There really are hardly any bugs in the Adventure games. After people online got tired of pointing and laughing at Sonic 06, they tried to find the next best thing. Which were the Adventure games. Sure if you watch a Game Grumps video, or Egoraptor it seems glitchy, but it’s honestly hard to encounter the glitches unintentionally. And while Big the Cat and the mech stages in SA2 had bad or at least wonky controls, the rest of the characters control great. And I never had problems with the camera.
Gimme 10 games all Sonic 06
If this is true, then I'm wishing for Sonic Generations to finally get a re-release...
@AtlanteanMan We're also getting House of the Dead 1 & 2 remakes from developer Forever Entertainment. So there's something happening, at least, even if it's not in-house. But it's still frustrating, knowing what else is possible, with all those dormant IP's.
Please have the Advance and Adventure games on. I'd also hope they use the iOS versions of 1 & 2. Trying to keep my expectations low with this one unfortunately 😅
Sonic 1-3&k, spinball, Sonic CD, Adventure 1-2. Generations and Colours would do me.
I hope the collection has all the mainline games up to Generations, but that's probably asking for too much.
@Snatcher the writing is on the wall. It's all but confirmed now.
@AtlanteanMan @basswitch
They're only considering, but at least it's something!

@Lanmanna I'm aware of those potential projects (and we'll see whether they too end up being outsourced). But still no word regarding any of their amazing RPG/SRPG franchises or Arcade titles (Crazy Taxi notwithstanding).
@SigourneyBeaver Super Sonic Mega Collection & Knuckles
