Though many gamers are focused on the latest shiny new games from Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft, there's a market for 'new' releases on retro systems too. Now another one is going up for pre-order, in this case a game that'll be making its console debut on Super NES and SEGA Genesis / Mega Drive; yes, it is indeed 2021!
This time around it's Chip's Challenge, which has been ported to the 16-bit systems and will be produced and sold by The Retro Room. Like a number of projects of this type, it's reviving an old game for additional retro hardware and producing physical editions that will work in your actual SNES or Genesis, just like the old days.
Chip's Challenge is a game with some eager fans, it even has its own Wiki. Originally a release on the portable Atari Lynx in 1989, it's a puzzle game that gained recognition when it was ported to Windows and bundled in multiple 'Microsoft Entertainment Pack' releases; it was a relatively big-hitter on PC in the early to mid '90s, as a result. This release through The Retro Room will be its console debut, all these years later.
Pre-sales are open; you can get the 'complete box' (game cartridge, manual and box) at $49.99USD, or just the cartridge for $24.99USD. You can choose either the SNES or Mega Drive / Genesis version, and also need to specify between PAL and NTSC so that it'll work on your old hardware.
So there you have it, a game making its console debut on SNES and SEGA Genesis / Mega Drive; are any of you retro gamers and collectors tempted?

That Megadrive cart looks awful. Nice to see older games getting ported to other machines though.
This is a new port, I guess?
I know half a decade ago, the NES port (one developed for commercial release during its original lifetime) was discovered, with one exclusive level.
WHy not also port to modern consoles as well, you might make your money back and give people a chance to actually play it?
MY CHILDHOOD!! I put hundreds of hours into this game on Windows 95.
I would certainly buy this on Switch but I've long since moved on from SNES and Genesis.
As long as the game says "Bummer" when you mess up, it's a hit in my book.
Man, American SNES carts are horrible looking. Very much prefer the PAL and JP design.
@nessisonett it at all. I never liked the way all other versions looked. They all looked cheap to me over the American versions.
I had this on the C64, and now on my Evercade, and it is still a really fun game.
This makes the Atari Lynx definitively useless. Chip's Challenge was the only good Lynx exclusive game, and now it's coming to the SNES and SMD.
Been playing the Lynx version of this quite a bit on Evercade. It's a cracking little puzzle game. That said, it came on a cartridge, boxed with instructions and a handful of other games on the cart too for £14.99. $50 for just this game alone is... a lot. And that Mega Drive cart and packaging is truly hideous.
Loved playing this on my C64
Oh man, I spent months plugging my way through this back on Windows 3.11... The puzzles eventually got too much for my pint-sized brain but the scope of it all was catnip for the imagination.
Well, guess I better search for my original Sega Genesis.
They need to fix that megadrive cart. Looks used and beaten.
I remember this game. My first girlfriend had it, and I used to go to her house just to play it, and to tongue kiss. I only had Solitaire, Minesweeper, and Rodents' Revenge on my PC.
I’ve played Chip’s Challenge on the C64 and am still humming the music from time to time. The SNES was a big part of my childhood so ordering this game was a no-brainer.
Oh man, I love Chip's Challenge! I'm kind of tempted to get both versions to be honest!
Nooooo!!! I’ve been wanting to play this again for so long and by not releasing it on GBA or even Gameboy color or something is a huge let-down for me. I do have a nice stash of older consoles but I do not have an SNES or Genesis. I’d have bought this if it were on N64 or gameboy color or gba or even ds or 3ds.
Oh well… it’s such a fun and massive game if you haven’t played it. So many nostalgias.
I'm a die hard retrogamer, but I want more new quality releases for the classic systems like Paprium, Xeno crisis. Especially trying to push the hardware further. This title doesn't look anything special to be honest.
Looks absolutely awful.
Licensed? Nintendo still licenses game cartridges to be made from 30 year old systems?
@nessisonett No it doesn't. The American cartridges look just fine.
I play this on Lynx and EverCade yesterday and it was still fun. Might get both so I could play it on Nomad and SupaBoy. Hopefully a Switch port happen soon so I could play it on the go the modern way.
Haha, this is awesome! I definitely spent a lot of time on this game back on Windows 95
It was just released on Steam not too long ago (along with the previously unreleased sequel and a level builder). My understanding was that the original developer finally got the rights back, but still had to rebuild from the ground up (could be mistaken though)
It let you play with the original graphics or Windows graphics, but not everything was exactly the same for the latter (though "bummer" was still present and spot on 😁)
Hopefully this isn't a "Bummer." port!
That's cool, but I'll stick with the PC version I already have. (I installed Windows 3.1 via DOSBox.)
Plus, the PC version allows me to use simple file name manipulation to skip past a level whenever I get stuck.
@TheWingedAvenger It wasn't exclusive to the Lynx anyway, since there's long been a version for Windows 3.1, the Commodore 64, and other systems.
@ChromaticDracula Actually, you could just get it for free on Steam.
That also goes for anyone else who may be considering a purchase.
@BulbasaurusRex
Yeah, but as AVGN said, "I wanna play videogames sitting on my couch".
@TheWingedAvenger Sure, but that's not something worth paying extra to achieve.
I just recently played this for the first time on my Atari Lynx I modded, its a fun little game that has a lot in common with the adventures of Lolo. Shout out to BennVenn for the awesome Screen kit and flash cart that made it possible.
@nessisonett Agreed! Although the early NA carts were not as ugly as they had the locking slot like the EU/PAL ones, until there was some kind of lawsuit in the US where Nintendo had to remove the lock slot to allow the games to be pulled out while the console was on. Thus why the majority of NA carts have that huge, ugly gap.
This is awesome news. But I agree with the guy who said the Genesis cart looks awful. The SNES cart looks good enough.
I've been hoping for this and Mousers Revenge to be made available somehow digitally
@nessisonett You should see the console itself, and the controllers
I've been wanting to get a Super Famicom for a long time now (or maybe mod a PAL unit?), but I can't really justify the cost for an issue that's purely cosmetic.
@Rafie
Nah, they suck. As did the horrible shoebox machine, in comparison to the SFC's curves.
@SpringDivorce No they really don't suck. It looks just fine to me.
