UK physical chart data is now in for the week ending 17th July, revealing that The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD has gone straight in at number one in its debut week.
Despite being a Switch-only title, the game managed to outsell the multi-platform F1 2021 to achieve that success; the latest F1 game also launched last week and is available across Xbox Series, PS4 and PS5 systems. Skyward Sword leads a top ten which includes six Switch exclusives (if you include the Switch version of Minecraft which is considered a standalone edition).
Mario Golf: Super Rush remains one of those top ten titles, despite falling down to ninth this week; Mario Kart 8 Deluxe keeps its spot as the strongest of Nintendo's evergreen giants.
Here's a look at this week's top ten all formats chart:

This is why Nintendo keeps pricing 10 year old ports at 60$.
Helps Skyward Sword's a damn good game. Worth the money for me, even though it's a double dip.
It's a shame Monster Hunter Stories 2 didn't show up, really enjoying it and hoping it sells well enough
GTAV? Is it PS5 owners buying this so they've got something to actually play on their very pretty paperweight?
Animal Crossing, a game that released well over a year ago, sits at number 5!
Dig it!
@Lordplops why the playstation hate?
I'm torn, because I want Skyward Sword to do well as I like the game and think it gets too much flack. Not to mention, I would like Nintendo to consider having another look at older style 3D Zeldas. At the same time however, I still can't justify how this is full priced when their really is not a lot of ground-breaking changes just some quality of life adjustments.
@NintendoKnight,
Or the fact their games are worth the price, and will retain their value longer than other games.
@blockfight,
What Playstation hate?, just a funny observation more than anything else.
@blockfight 'hate'....why do people immediately jump to that? Whatever happened to banter? Sigh...
@Lordplops “lol new good selling console has no games” wasn’t even funny when the ps3 and 360 where new.
Ps5 has 7 excellent first party exclusives at the moment, several third party exclusives and a lot of ports that are well worth a replay on ps5/xbox SX due to the major improvements. Both the XSX and ps5 are well worth the purchase.
I wish there would be a Zelda remake of A Link to the Past (SNES)
@Lordplops,
Banter and nuance are rarely recognized on here.
@darkswabber why tell me that? I don't care about your pitiful, poorly optimised handful of games, i'm a Nintendo Fanboi! Doh!
@darkswabber,
Sounds like you are protesting far too much, must be a little insecure about the Ps5 and it's very few games.
@johnvboy yup, it's straight to the woodshed to grab the pitchforks and assemble the mob.
@Lordplops,
You will be accused of that on here, a Nintendo site full of discontent about Nintendo, and no positives whatsoever.
Okay but what are the actual numbers?
I mean this wouldn't really be impressive if Skyward Sword only managed 10k sales. With everything else below that.
I'd like to know the actual numbers.
This list means nothing without actual numbers to back it up.
@Lordplops,
Just had the head of my pitchfork replaced, knew that would be a decision that would pay off.
Ouch...
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart on 10th place ? 😣
@johnvboy 😂😂😂
I caved and got Skyward Sword.....it is even better than my time on Wii now it has button options. Stunning game and a lot of fun.
@Patendo,
Never played the game, but am very tempted as it looks awesome, may wait until I get the OLED Switch.
@Lordplops @johnvboy
Are you both okay? Woke up on the wrong side of the bed? I've noticed a lot of Nintendo fans are insecure lately. Whats the matter?
@darkswabber only pointed out that PS5 have games and you two have continously been bashing him for pointing that out.
@Lordplops you in particular sound like a 12 year old kid who needs to get off the computer for a bit.
@Restryder,
You are just so cool, not sure I should be able to reply to you.
The bit about getting off the computer was so ironic, well done sir, I wish I could come up with cool comments like that, you must spend a lot of time on the computer posting them, to come up with that much nuance and wit.
@Restryder but bro, what about the actual numbers?
Biggest UK retail launches of 2021 thus far:
1) Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury: ~56,000
2) Resident Evil Village: ~52,000
3) The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword HD: ~41,000
4) Monster Hunter Rise: ~30,000
5) Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart: ~27,000
6) New Pokémon Snap: ~26,000
If you include digital sales, Skyward Sword HD should comfortably exceed the launch sales of both Skyward Sword on Wii and Link's Awakening 2019. In fact, it will likely approach the launch sales of the Switch version of Breath of the Wild.
Don't care what others say Skyward Sword is still fun today. Actually, it's even more fun than the original
@Lordplops tbf still has more "new" games than xbox series
@blockfight Trolls every where my friend
@Restryder you just found the two local nintnedo trolls of NintendoLife. Just ignore their nonsense
Who is still buying GTAV???
@LillianC14 This year's KS3!
$60 for a 10 year old port, they said.
One of the worst Zelda games, they said.
@Peteykins Game Builder Garbage more like?
Hehe.
I played a lot over the weekend, still love the game, and the improvements really helped the experience. Was glad to buy it again with all of the improvements considered.
I'll still pay for a full priced Zelda remake over Fifa.
Glad it’s done so well it’s a great game so far.
@Peteykins
Game Builder Garage is not a garbage.
Peoples have different gaming tastes so Game Builder Garage is a game for who have interest in making something new.
Not everyone is getting into Zelda games or mainstream games.
@The_New_Butler not really. It plays pretty well. Although, I never played the original on the Wii. Read some people say this version is a huge improvement over the original. Specifically, the 60FPS and regular controls are getting a lot of positive responses.
Super disappointed in monster hunter stories 2, such a good game but poor sales, even online there's not many people looking for co op quests
@darkswabber 7 games that no one plays. Hence the sales of GTA V hahaha.
@Lordplops apologies. I didn't read it that way. Sorry!
AMAZING! This probably will sell more than the original.
@Anti-Matter you say that yet you spew hate on any mature game.
Make up your mind.
On topic: Seems people don't really care about it being $60, I know I didn't
@Anti-Matter
I agree, my son loves it, a very creative game and a nice change from SuperMarioMaker
@blockfight no worries ☺
Such is the Power of Nintendo!
@UltimateOtaku91 'trolls'. They say something I don't like = trolls. Another overused, knee-jerk word.
@NintendoKnight Nintendo has games that are 30 years old games that are still worth the price.unlike other companies
@Lordplops
Lol I thought you already knew by now that like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Minecraft, GTA V is an evergreen game. People will keep buying it no matter what because it holds replay value, especially if Rockstar is giving people the incentive to buy the next-next-gen version.
It's worth noting that they're almost shutting down their PS3 and Xbox 360 servers. Towards the future, the same will likely happen to the PS4 and Xbox One.
@UltimateOtaku91 yeah evidently i have, I'm not bothered too much, they're probably a couple of children, hormones all bent out of shape. This is a Nintendo fan site after all.
@Lordplops @johnvboy and on that subject, shouldn't you two be in school? Or do teachers allow kids to be on their phones all day at school?
@Paranoid_Android TBH, Ratchet is just amazing
@Restryder you seem obsessed with kids. I would seek help if I were you, that kind of behaviour is not healthy.
@Restryder Good game. Great update. Glad it's doing well. Bring on Metroid Prime Trilogy!
@Restryder,
As you jumped to the conclusion I was at school, I am guessing that's where you are typing from, on your breaks I guess.
Nintendo fan site, that's a laugh, most hate the big N on here.
@MS7000 good point, because of the lack of Nintendo games at the moment I would buy Skyward Sword, if it was a third less.
If enough of us refused to buy the game them maybe the next 20 plus ports would be priced more reasonable. But on principal I don't want to support scalpers, which Nintendo seem to be at the moment.
@UltimateOtaku91 were you getting poor sales what because it’s dropped out the top 10?? Last I heard it’s selling better then the original which is great it’s never goanna have the staying power of a main line Monster Hunter game.
Fight! Fight! Fight! etc...oh man this place. So much despair and misery. Smile folks - give your faces a treat. 🤣
Good to see it reach number one, had a nice little binge on it last night and will get stuck in again tonight - the original game didn't sell that well but if you were to read the comments in here, you'd assume it sold 101m copies rather than 3.5m. Could this be another title which outsells its original release?
@Darkyoshi98 Facts. Nintendo IP is probably the most valuable Videogame IP collectively...and it's not even close
Good for Zelda.
Can't believe how high Mario Kart remains.
We don't get MK9 anytime soon I fear.
@uptownsoul I can imagine BOTW, Mario Odyssey, Animal Crossing and Smash Ultimate will find their way onto a hypothetical Switch 2.
I doubt they'll port the same games two gens in a row. But it's very likely notable Switch games are going to show up on the next system. The same way notable WiiU games did.
@luxoricious Porting Mario Kart 8 has paid off big time!
I hope they use this buffer time to develop MK9 with Double Dash mechanics.
I think Nintendo's timing for this game is excellent, in regards to BotW2. I'm sure that game will have more than just a brief mention of Skyloft with what we were shown in the latest trailer.
@The_New_Butler it is still an old game. Not surprised some of the headaches are still there. I skipped this one on the Wii, so it's a first time for me.
I have to admit that this game, at least handheld, does look much better than the official videos and screens made it look. I don't want to see it docked, but handheld it actually does look visibly improved. Yes, I'm a sucker that bought it because I technically love the game and thought I was the only one who did back in the day, so I needed it in my collection. This and Twilight Princess, I personally, love more than Ocarina and WW that are too dated and short. And I kind of can't stand MM though I love the mood and theme.
But I also forgot how obnoxious all the early game dialog is. It's Zelda. It's supposed to be action-y and text-lite, but the game drones on and on with so much needless text. So much hand holding. "This is how you use a map! Did you know you could buy potions and they heal you? Did you know the race is today? Also, there's a race today. You must be excited for the race today. Did you hear Link is going to be in the race?"
And, OMG the lips. The hideous, terrifying lips. And the Imprisoned. That was annoying the first time and it still is. But generally it's a game with some of the best Zelda dungeons of all time. It and BotW make book ends. SS is all dungeon and all puzzles with no exploration. BotW is all exploration adventure with no dungeons to crawl. Put them together and you get.....Zelda 1?
This game also highlights just how bad Switch's screens are and the need for the Switch prOLED. This game was clearly designed for it, because the forest looks faded and washed out on the standard screens, and it should be vibrant.
@Lordplops Don't be silly, that's just false fanboy trolling.
...Any self-respecting PS5 owner knows the PS5 version is going to charge more later and won't be upgradeable for free.....
Business strategy wise well done Nintendo.
Little effort big sales.
For someone that has owed all Nintendo consoles and played all the remakes so far on the original consoles, not great for those gamers.
We definitely not been getting any new AAA in house games at the moment at it’s been a long time.
I wonder how many people are buying a sealed copy to sell for a million pounds in about 35 years time. A great game buying soon xxx
@The_New_Butler Wind Waker > Skyward Sword HD > Twilight Princess in my opinion. Before the updates I would have swapped TP and SS around. Not much in it.
@Dr_Lugae It's most likely that the next gen Nintendo system will simply play Switch cardridges as well as the ones for that system. Just like on the 3DS.
@Peteykins huh? It’s not been released physically in the uk?
@Lordplops oh well, you know, might be because im having to deal with you two immature kids right now 🙄.
At least that explains why you're both so insecure, still not old enough to shrug it off, but don't worry son, that stuff comes with time 😁.
Did the lanayru mining facilities last night and this game is amazing. The dungeons have all been great and the linearity feels like any Zelda game pre botw. Honestly this is on pace to beat wind Waker as my favorite Zelda game. Also I got to say glad to play a Zelda game where the,Gorons, Zora, gerudo, and Kokori in some form, aren’t the races of Hyrule. It was getting old and nice to see some originality. ( I know this is a port and I am treating it like a new game but for me this is a new game so that is why)
@uptownsoul
They can do that with Wii U games because none of them sold due to the hardware they were on. Older ports are because when they don’t do that people get mad. Switch 2 will be another Wii U if they resell switch games because everyone will have them already
@The_New_Butler
In optional dialogue at the beginning of the game. Seems like most games do that
@The_New_Butler
That happens in all Zelda games. At the point you are talking about that is about five minutes of getting a potion and heading to Faron. Just seems like nitpicking to me.
@blindsquarel It's greatly improved in the HD version, but the start is still too slow. Took me just over an hour to get off of Skyloft. In a 40 hour game it's not a big deal, but it is still the weakest part of the game.
@UltimateOtaku91 so many mentiond comments... which two are trolls again?
@Jey887
I can see that but most of it is taken up with cutscenes which are needed for a good story or else you get botw or ocarina.( for ocarina I just mean the story is bad not that the game is bad, botw I have my issues with) Nintendo life got passed the tutorial in 15 minutes. But I agree about the tutorial and how it is bad. I am coming of twighlight princess so I am used to long tutorials by now
@The_New_Butler
You are talking to optional NFC’s but then say it is to talkative? And on the other Zelda games note It is no worse than twighlight princess and majoras mask
@blindsquarel the mining facility. That's where I gave up. I could never time the jumps right. Is that easier on switch?
Good job Skyward Sword. This makes me happy to see people enjoy Skyward Sword.
Good result for what seems like a good remaster. I reckon it being available for as little as £34.99 helped.
A very strong 2021 for Nintendo continues.
@blindsquarel That's a good point. It does set things up well. The game has some great payoffs later on.
I have always been of the opinion that the intro for TP is the worst in the series. Its such a slog...
wtf who still keeps buying mario kart 8? ;D
@UltimateOtaku91 Yeah, I truthfully blocked one of those two, due to them getting into arguments all the time with me, using claims that they enjoyed the game personally, so therefore my opinion doesn’t matter.
@westman98
When 4 of the years 6 biggest launches have been Switch exclusive it makes the narrative so many put forward on here that Switch is struggling for games look really weird.
@Restryder
Numbers are on post #28. Spoiler-it’s done very well.
@The_New_Butler
If it is optional then it won’t make you talk to them. There defined optional to you
Seriously enjoying Skyward Sword HD, all the QOL improvements and HD visuals have drastically improved the game in my view...
@Adamn I'd say mario kart is one of the must of games of your getting a switch for the first time and very easy game to get into and enjoy and provides family entertainment and is one kids enjoy, so basically I'd say for every two switches sold one copy of mario kart is sold hence why it's always in the charts
@Boldfoxrd
I didn’t play the original game but I had no problem with it. Just use your map to find secret paths and stuff like that. It is much more helpful than other Zelda games
@electrolite77 nice to see MH Rise still doing well at least for physical, hoping that game reaches 10m, it should be on around 8m by now, it was on 7m at around May, i know sales have slowed down but I'd imagine it wouldn't be hard for them to be on around 8m by now globally.
I have a bet with my friend you see, i said that the only 3rd party developer capable of making a game on Nintendo hardware that would get 10m sales is Capcom.
He didn't agree, saying that no developer aside from Nintendo themselves are capable of doing it.
So far MH Rise is easily the best selling 3rd party game so far for the Switch, but my bet with him is 10m.
@VoidofLight people like that just like winding people up and are blind to the fact everyone else's opinions matter aswell not just theirs
@Outerdragon I just thought due to the massive success of world and rise and bring so many new players to the series that stories 2 would of been more successful and in the charts longer than one week. But as you pointed out it's sold better than the 1st one so that's good news atleast as its a brilliant game. I'd reccomended any monster hunter fan to atleast give it try even if it's just the demo
@Peteykins
Game Builder Garage never even charted in the first place as it is a digital-only game in Europe and this is a retail sales chart.
@Kreko most retailers bundle up a copy of Mario Kart 8 with a Switch these days for £310.
So technically a lot of MK 8 sales are tied to the console itself.
I don't know why I'm still surprised by how well the Switch and its games sell.
@InkIdols commentors number #4 and #8
Happy this game is a success. Skyward Sword is fantastic, and no one can convince me otherwise.
Here in norway i got the game today for 450nkr as a normal price at the biggest store here. Its about 45 dollars in U.S when i calculate the economy difference. A 60 dollars game in U.S usually costs 72 dollars in norway.
Its why i didnt bother waiting with the purchase, a great price for a great game 😃 Glad to see the success!
@uptownsoul @blindsquarel
Nintendo literally just succeeded in selling an enhanced port of a Wii game, even though the Wii was an incredibly popular platform that many people owned.
There is no doubt in my mind that there will be some enhanced Switch ports on Switch 2. Heck, just look at Sony - they have enhanced ports of Ghost of Tsushima and Death Stranding releasing in next 2 months for PS5, even though both games are already playable on PS5 via backwards compatibility.
@westman98
The Wii was released 15 years ago. I think backwards compatibility is much more likely than switch games getting ported
@Restryder
Oh that’s an interesting bet. I reckon you’ve a good chance.
@blindsquarel
Sure, but the idea that "it is bad business to port a game that was originally from a popular legacy platform to the current platform" is false.
I think the Switch 2 will be backwards compatible with the current Switch AND Switch 2 will get enhanced ports of some current Switch games. Much like what is happening right now on PS5 and Xbox Series.
@UltimateOtaku91 yah like I said don’t compare it to a main entry just compare it to somthing like Pokémon dudgeons a spine off 😊
@Lordplops
GTA V has about the greatest staying power of any game that doesn't have an N logo on it. I too wonder who the hell is buying this game as you would think its far surpassed its saturation point. Honestly I just think RockStar are dopey a$$ hats for not porting it to Switch. The game has such a huge following you know it would not only sell well on Switch, it would probably help push systems (especially if they did cross save) because so many diehards would probably buy a Switch just to play GTA V on the go.
@UltimateOtaku91 gotcha. thanks
That's great. I'm enjoying the game myself, not that I disliked the motion controls originally, but the button controls are a nice option to have. Being about to play this game on the go is nice too. So glad they remastered this.
@Paranoid_Android I just got a new copy from a local mom and pop game store because I couldn't find it at any Wal-Mart near me. Weird honestly. All the Walmarts I stopped at had huge stacks of Skyward Sword though to be sold lol.
@solarstriker Link Between Worlds is probably the closest you'll get to that
@Lordplops Nope, it's the UK's general market cycle of FIFA, COD and GTA. I'm shocked that there isn't a COD game in the top 10.
@uptownsoul
That's a good question, and it probably isn't something that we will know about until it actually happens.
@eatdogs is really unfortunate it's not getting more attention, i know it stutters a bit on the switch but ultimately it's a really fun game
There's been a lot of advertising for Skyward Sword HD, seems like it's paying off.
Zelda UK retail launch sales:
> Twilight Princess (Wii): ~65,000
> Skyward Sword: ~45,000
> Breath of the Wild (NSW): ~62,000
> Link's Awakening: ~40,000
> Skyward Sword HD: ~41,000
Breath of the Wild 2 should easily have the biggest UK retail launch in the franchise - my guess is that it will fall in the 100,000-150,000 unit range.
I hope I can say it is worth it cause this is one of the few Zelda games I've never touched in my life. Wasn't into gaming in 2011. My copy just came today so I'll be diving in.
Congratulations to the Zelda team and Nintendo as a whole !!!
@solarstriker Remake, perhaps. Remaster, nah. ALTTP has aged too well and Is available on the SNES classic edition and the SNES Nintendo Switch app. Without a remaster or remake, it is still perfectly aporoachable and is one of the greatest ten video games of all time according to the general concensus.
