Update [Sun 25th Jul, 2021 17:00 BST]: With pre-orders of the digital version of Sonic Colors: Ultimate going live, we've also found out the file size. Well, kind of.
According to the Nintendo website, it'll take up 6.9GB of free space on your system. And on the US and UK eShop pages, it says 7.2GB of free space is required. So make sure you've got around 7GB free.
Original article [Sat 24th Jul, 2021 07:05 BST]: Pre-orders for the upcoming release Sonic Colors: Ultimate are now available on the Nintendo Switch eShop.
The standard digital version will set you back $39.99/£34.99 and comes with a number of bonus items including a 'Sonic Movie Boost' and exclusive player icons. If you opt with the Digital Deluxe version for $44.99/£39.99, you'll get the game, music and cosmetic DLC packs, bonus items as well as early access.
Pre-orders for the physical version of the game have also been live for some time now. This includes a special 30th anniversary Birthday Pack, which is limited to Japan.
Will you be picking up a physical or digital copy of this game when it arrives on Switch this September? Tell us down below.

Probably not gonna pre order, but definitely gonna purchase someday.
It's out September 7th - for anyone trying in vain to find that info in this article !
Gonna pre order a physical copy soon 😊
I think I'll be getting the physical for this one (as a pre-order). A fan of the Wii game.
You now do it on the E shop? damn just when I was going to go physical, I can't now knowing the 3 day early play.
Naw I'm still going to do physical, I just hate it when they keep trying to bribe people to go digital, I just want to have my physical copy, now I'm going to have to pick one damn.
"Will you be picking up a physical or digital copy of this game when it arrives on Switch this September?"
Probably not since finding out it runs at 30fps. It's a Wii port, there's no excuse, especially as Nintendo just released Skyward Sword at 60fps. I daresay SEGA could've even got Team Sonic Racing running at 60fps on Switch too if they'd made the effort... It was hardly a graphical powerhouse and looked worse than Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
I will likely wait until I buy an Xbox Series X later in the year and get it on that.
I won't buy any game that wants me to own it before I've read a review or played a demo.
It was suggested it is a game for children, which suggests to me a game that almost plays itself, like Kirby on Switch.
But at least the price is reasonable, unlike Kirby.
@Clyde_Radcliffe "I will likely wait until I buy an Xbox Series X"
Heck, I'm seriously considering the Series S. A cheap-ish console where I can play casual/indie games on the couch without any sacrifices is looking very attractive. I don't care for third-party AAA games, I'd rather play them on PC with keyboard and mouse.
I have had it with almost every Switch game being a compromise.
Pre ordered it on Switch but thinking about changing my pre order to the Xbox One version instead....
Still undecided, I'm aware it will run at 60 FPS on XBox and look better but would rather play it on Switch... 🤣
@BANJO I'm also a little bit unsure about this. But still want it on Switch.
I already preordered physically. I don't get it, why I should pre order digital 😂
I'll get it on Series X. If I want the 30fps version I already have it... on Wii.
@nocdaes Thanks, that seems quite the obvious omission on NLifes part @Liam_Doolan. Bit too soon for me after this Summer sucking up most of my cash.
Will get the game eventually as I missed it on Wii (was too burned by the storybook games at the time).
@Nintendo4Sonic Yes I might Switch from Switch to the Xbox One/Xbox Series X version... We will see.
And as for needing to pre-ordering digital, that's always been a mystery to me also... 😂
Seriously, if only Sega updated the Xbox 360 games to run at 60fps on Series X/S...
@zool

(wonders about this "Kirby on Switch")
@Clyde_Radcliffe Thing is with the Skyward Sword it's more of a simple remaster, still uses alot of Wii models and such, wouldn't be surprised if it's half emulation and half a port like Super Mario Galaxy was on 3D All Stars, while Sonic Colors Ultimate is a full on remake and since it's being released on other systems/PC it won't be limited to the Switch's hardware power.
Gonna get it on Steam bro, for that 60fps action my dude
@nocdaes The release date is located in the right banner, so no need to add it to the new article.
@ClassSonicSatAm isn't it a remaster rather than a full blown remake? Most places seem to refer it as such... it seems to have new lighting and other effects.
Look I'm buying on the switch, I have been playing games and 30fps for a long time so it never did bother, me even tho its a pretty big blow to me.
@sanderev Not on a mobile it doesn't... what are you browsing on?!
@NinjaWaddleDee If you're wanting the pc version, your only option is Epic Games Store. Steam won't be getting this one unfortunately.
@nocdaes A PC, ofcourse.
I’ll be getting the game but not through pre-ordering and not on the Switch. Deciding between my PS4 Pro and PC.
@Clyde_Radcliffe same boat. Not really a frame snob but having a next gen console version with better performance and visuals at the same price is hard to beat.
@FishLipFace Oh dang, well looks like they aren't getting my sale then. Thanks for the heads up!
@nocdaes You are right. Both times.
@Clyde_Radcliffe Would say it's a full remake, seeing how it's got new content/modes, a ton of gameplay changes like having Tails and Metal Sonic in stages, new models, new remixed music, while skyward sword just seems like a remaster much like the twilight princess wii u remaster remember that one?
@Clyde_Radcliffe this is a remaster, not a port like skyward sword, its understandable the game runs at 30 fps because the switch is just not powerful enough, these games are not made exclusive for the switch so it makes sense that they dont optimise them as well as nintendo
I'll be grabbing this digitally, as I moved away from physical ages ago. While my laptop could probably run it, I'm sticking to the Switch version for convenience. Never cared much about FPS 🤷♂️
I will probably get this on switch someday. Going to wait for reviews
Unfortunately I think I’m gonna get this on my
Xbox series x
Between this and Monkey Ball, SEGA are really hyping me up this year. Now if they can put Vanquish on Switch, I would be on Cloud 9.
Is it cheaper on Switch than the PS4 version? Should be since it will be the worst version.
Shoulda been a remake. This game wasnt all too good.
@Snatcher It's a hard pill for me to swallow considering I was playing 3D Sonic games that ran at 60fps on the GameCube and even Dreamcast (Sonic Adventure 2)
I really think 60fps should be standard by now across the board in gaming but then I'm someone who favours prioritising framerate over fancy graphics. Framerate effects gameplay/control and makes it smoother in a way fancy shading and stuff rarely do.
@Clyde_Radcliffe Ya I have to agree with you on that, I would like it if they dumb down the graphics just a little if it meant 60FPS. but lets be honest, they built this version of the game on a pc or something so switch almost acts like a port.
That's a tad hefty for a remake of a Wii game, probably should upgrade my sd card at some point.
Nah and even if I would I would probably preorder it on PC since I can play the game at 21x9 and higher framerates!
@Snatcher All video games are built using PC!
@GamingDude800 Ok if you want to get smart about it I mean built for the pc and just ported to another console, as it was never build't to support said console, there.
@Snatcher dude, I play Wii games a lot and I don’t even notice the framerate. I only notice the game and what is going on the screen
@Ambassador_Kong why should it be cheaper on switch if we are probably getting the full experience that is on platforms as well? Yeah the framerate will be 30 FPS very likely but it’s not like the switch version will be missing out any modes or anything. It’s up to tue developer on what they want to price it at
@BANJO wait for reviews and don’t pre order. If you did, just wait
@Clyde_Radcliffe it’s more of a remaster like Mass Effect Legendary Edition where it is more reworked and everything. Same thing with Sonic Colors Ultimate, I believe Skyward Sword is a port with updated 60 FPS and more better visuals.
@zool
Most company’s would love for us to buy and own everything without reading reviews or playing demo’s.
Who suggested Sonic Colours is a “kids” game? It’s an “anybody who wants to play can play” game, like Mario. Also it doesn’t play itself, especially later levels.
Kirby games also aren’t “kids” games and definitely don’t play themselves, the things wrong with the switch game is length & price, not difficulty; it actually has a whole difficulty scale going up to a nightmare difficulty and it also has a separate mode with harder puzzles. It doesn’t even play itself on super easy mode, sure the enemies are useless but the puzzles can’t just be walked through.
@Clyde_Radcliffe
Skyward Sword HD seems to be a remaster with better visuals & added features, Sonic Colours Ultimate seems to be a remake in a whole new engine.
@Pandy yeah
@anoyonmus
Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a collection of “updated ports” running on emulation with modded graphics to look better.
Skyward Sword HD is a “HD remaster” with improved visuals and gameplay and nothing “new”.
Sonic Colours Ultimate seems to be a remake cause it’s in a new engine, with new models, new lighting, new gameplay, improved controls, new features, new modes, etc.
@Pandy it’s sort of the same with Mass Effect Legendary Edition. They used a more modified Unreal Engine 3 like NetherRealm did with MK11 and BioWare reworked a lot of the 3 games, especially Mass Effect 1.
@anoyonmus I mean ya, I only have been a heavy FPS person only if the game looks really bright or meant to look kinda like something like Rift apart.
Even if it is 30 FPS, I am still gonna get it for Switch.
@Snatcher hmm yeah.
Anyway the Sonic colors Ultimate game is more like what BioWare did with Mass Effect Legendary Edition. Used an updated or modified version of the same engine for Sonic Colors Ultimate
@anoyonmus Hey man its all the same to me, I'm still going for the switch version even if it doesn't look as nice, I have been waiting years to play this game.
@Snatcher same here, man
@XenoShaun Quick question: Who's the character on your profile picture? I sort of recognize the art style but I can't quite place it. Is it someone from Samurai Warriors 5?
@Fujimoto-San just saw his profile picture. Looks like Nobunga from SW5
@Clyde_Radcliffe I've always hated that the jump from GC to Wii resulted in 30 fps for practically every Sonic game, even Unleashed despite being the same dumb game on PS2.
The storybook games have had a sort of reintroduction to my collection as it turns out the 60 fps patch works very well on a real Wii, guess Sega/ST felt like trolling or perhaps they simply didn't want any bit of slowdown.
@anoyonmus
No it’s running in some obscure engine called Godot the problem is they just ported over assets from a Wii spec game rather than remaking it which is okay the cause behind obvious issues like the lighting as it’s not been remade to fit modern rendering techniques, instead they just messed with the contrast and tossed in a truckload of bloom while not preserving the prebaked lighting of the Wii game and whatever rendering tricks they used. Instead of getting what you’d get if you play the game in Dolphin set to 1080/4K you get what happens when someone does a quick port of a Colors level to Sonic Generations PC.
@Fujimoto-San Older Nobunaga Oda from SW5. Good eye on the release number.
@anoyonmus correct-o.
I'm just waiting for Monkey Ball to be ready for pre-order
I wanted to get a physical copy, but they added digital exclusives.
I hate pre-order exclusives on re-releases.
I don't want to buy this game twice.
Most my Nintendo library are physical.
@tadams587 I know I hate it to, Can you just let me get whatever version I want? why do you have to bribe me to get another?
@anoyonmus it's missing half the frames.
@Pandy you make it sound worth getting. 👍
@Ambassador_Kong that doesn’t mean the cost of the game should be down.
It isn’t missing any content. The game costs $39.99 on Switch which is the same as on other platforms I believe.
If the switch version costed like $60 but PS4 version costed $40, I will have a problem with that
@tadams587 is Sonic Colors Ultimate digital only
NO only the digital bonus are
@tadams587
The digital bonuses are being sold as separate dlc.
@Pandy
https://colors.sonicthehedgehog.com/
https://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/sonic-colors-ultimate-switch/
Sonic Movie Boost - is exclusive to digital preorders
I still have not watched the live adaptation.
@XenoShaun I thought so ha ha! Thanks. I'm really looking forward to SW5's release. It's art direction is simply breathtaking.
@anoyonmus Seems we were both correct. Thanks.
@tadams587
It’s also included in the customisation dlc pack
@Fujimoto-San Now that the NDA is lifted, can say it's worth getting and holds up well on the Switch with rarely seeing any dips in frames. Only major thing that irritated me (in my 50 odd hours of play) is the loading times are inexplicably long and have no reason to be. Besides that though it's very fun and a lot of content to enjoy!
@XenoShaun Sounds charming! What I love most about these games are the non-stop action and the local co-op gameplay. I have quite a few games in my backlog but SW5 is one I just might get sooner rather than later.
You mentioned an NDA so am I right to assume you worked on the game or were given an early copy?
@Fujimoto-San I had a review copy (wish I worked on the game! Maybe in the near future.. though the British branch).
