Hot on the heels of the frustrating soft-lock glitch that's been meddling with some unfortunate The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD players' game time, another glitch has now come to our attention that's arguably even more irritating than the last.
Nintendo Life reader TheCursedFrog has got in touch to share their experience of the game's final moments (if the headline didn't make it obvious, expect spoilers from this point on). "I just defeated Demise (Fatalot in the Dutch version) in Skyward Sword HD," they say, "but instead of a wonderful ending cinematic and the credits I was rewarded with a frozen white screen."
A peculiar incident, for sure, but a quick look over on Reddit shows that they're not the only one experiencing this particular problem. As uncovered by players discussing the issue in a thread, the common theme among those affected appears to be that they're playing the game in Dutch – some go on to report that changing the language to English to take on the final fight avoids the problem.
As you'd expect, the glitch has left some players rather frustrated:
"Just "finished" the game on Switch and presented with the white screen. What an anti climax!"
"I closed the game, beat Demise again and the same happened again. It just hangs on a white screen and nothing happens."
"Yea pff same here… epic boss fight and then a mega anticlimax with the white screen…"
If the language setting is indeed to blame, here's hoping Nintendo can issue a true fix for the problem soon. In the meantime, if you're playing the game in Dutch, be aware that the final boss might give you a headache or two until such a fix comes along.

Being Dutch myself, I'm just glad I never set my games to Dutch anyway. Always English for me.

Same as Yosher, am Dutch myself but never play games in said language. Grew up on English Pokémon games and Yu-Gi-Oh cards so prefer games in English

@sanderev they are? That's interesting...I always assumed Dutch people were very proficient at understanding and speaking English. What makes their translations terrible?
Did they not have a Dutch tester or what lol? Small side content having difficult-to-isolate bugs like this I can understand, but the entire ending sequence being broken is just ridiculous.

Unfortunately, there seems to be a clear split in fan-bases of every Zelda game. Those who want The Wind Waker HD on the Switch never mention Twilight Princess HD, and vice versa. Those who are fans of Breath of the Wild only want content related to Breath of the Wild. I know it's a bad stereotype, but I've seen it occur more than I would like.
Not entirely on topic, but why does Nintendo bother translating games to Dutch anyway? The Netherlands is a tiny country who's inhabitants are known for being some of the best non-native English speakers in the world. The same is true for the Scandinavians and Nintendo never bothers translating to any of those languages because it's unnecessary.
No Zelda game should be played in Dutch by anyone over 10.
@Link-Hero eh, finding something used can be pretty cheap, it could be possible to get it at like 30-40 dollars from other people.

I’m Dutch but I never change the language because it always turns out in a very silly and awkward translation.

That's the true ending. Link and Demise's battle was so climactic it ends all of existence.
I had a similar issue with Bravely Second. My 3DS menu was in Portuguese (game in English) and during the events of the final boss it kept softlocking on a black screen. The funny part is that it really fit what was happening in the game (if you played it you'll know).
Then somehow I found out and changed the 3DS menu to English, then got it solved.
Playing Xenoblade Chronicles on Wii U, for some reason it also kept crashing the game when I reached a specific place on Primordia. I found out that it was also because the system menu language. But as the game hadn't any interaction with the menu whatsoever, beats me why that happened.
Do most Dutch speak English? Is the dutch language similar to English? So much more info could have been added to this article.
This bug is probably caused by a buffer overflow. The on-screen text is data written to a buffer that has a maximum length. If the text data's length is bigger than the buffer's length, it will start overwriting other stuff saved at another memory location, which will cause unexpected behaviors.
In that case, one string of text must be too long in the ending sequence of the Dutch version, and it overwrote stuff that is not text.... then it broke the game.
This is really odd. I wonder if this actually happens often where there is a game breaking bug or a major bug that only happens in one language option of a video game? It seems like in play testing that they would probably not play test the entire game rigorously in each language?

I'm so glad I've avoided this """HD""" port, seems like some rather awful, rough glitches and softlocks are happening. ^^;
I was never into this game much anyways and quit due to the absolute handholding this game has with constantly plaguing me with that annoying "partner" for Link, as well as finding the art style unappealing and the absolutely awful motion controls. It's been a hard pass for me so far, especially if reports like this are showing up where the game is this broken.
Wish you could post non spoiler ways to avoid this, but can't read the article since i don't want spoilers.

@Clarice Usually we have a very small amount of capable voice actors. And English names in Dutch sound just weird. (Same goes the other way around as well)
To my knowledge, I've seen only 2 decent translated games in Dutch:
1. The Longest Journey (PC) I actually liked the Dutch version better than the English.
2. Beyond Good and Evil. I played the GameCube version first which here only came in Dutch and French. (no English option) I quite liked it as well, and the voice of Jade was a bit better.

@sanderev you're saying the translation gets done by the voice actors? Not sure I understand why you are bringing up voice acting.
I see the glorified HD port of a Wii game is worth it with bugtesting this good.

@Mauzuri while they are both zelda games they are vastly different. I wouldn't call breath of the wild overrated. Maybe you just need to play breath of the wild with a different mind set. I have found the first few hours of skyward sword a bit easy and scaled down in content/barebones compared to most other zelda games. The collectables feel like a chore rather than something I love finding for instance.
@ModdedInkling me personally I want both wwhd and tphd on switch. They would only have to rework the tingle bottle functionality and remove the wii u gamepad inventory.
@OctoCallie20 had a lot less trouble than the wii version especially with button only controls. You had to recalibrate the wiimote like every 5 minutes and they did cut out a large portion of the partner's unnecessary dialog while making some optional.

The Tingle Bottle felt very extra and much more of a showcase for the Wii U than something I feel would be important for TWW. It was a nice feature, but I'd wager they would just remove it completely.
As far as GamePad functionality goes, probably won't matter because the Pro Controller was another option in TWWHD and TPHD.
@Klabanus They are technically good, but it feels strange playing games in Dutch. And most of the names are weird. And I don't play them in Dutch, but I do often see video's / trailers from Nintendo Nederland in Dutch, confirming my reasoning.
