Sonic Colors Ultimate arrives on the Nintendo Switch next week, and while the majority of fans have to wait until then, it seems some individuals are already lucky enough to be playing a hard copy of the game.
Reddit user kaydeejay1995 is one of those people - revealing how they received a physical copy of the game a week early. This is also apparently the first time they've had something like this happen before. Neat!
Unsurprisingly, the top question so far is about the performance in this particular version. Apparently, it runs fine, provided you can "tolerate" the 30fps cap.
In our own Nintendo Life review of the game, we awarded Sonic Colors Ultimate eight out of ten stars and mentioned how it was the best way to experience Sonic Colors, if you haven't played the original games before. And even as a returning player, it's still worth a go.
Although most of us can't get hold of a physical copy of the game just yet, from today onwards - Sonic Colors Ultimate Digital Deluxe owners can play the game early. This version costs a little more than the standard digital release and is technically tied to an account.
Will you be picking up this game for the Nintendo Switch? Have you ever got a new game ahead of its official release? Tell us down below.

If you pre-ordered the Digital Deluxe Edition, you get to play tomorrow! Hopefully at midnight, but probably at noon.
Correction the 1st October for us in Europe for the physical copy 😞
Man I gotta wait a whole week, Damn.
@topher6490 Ah, of course! I've updated the post with this information.
good for getting the game early! I’ve never had that happened to me either.
never played the original. kinda tempted on getting the physical version
@Longondo Sega's not going to be mad at you for playing the game early 😂
That’s nothing I played it 10 years ago.
Knowing that Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword, another Wii original title, achieved 60fps in its remaster, and every other console remastered versions of Sonic Colors did as well, the Switch version is a hard pass. If only Sega delayed the Switch release to make it work..
@Porky I still don't think they would have done it, I mean they could add a patch for 60 fps if they wanted to, But no, they left the switch out just bc they were "Hard at work" with the other consoles.
To be this good takes ageS...
@SalvorHardin this is the new version
I saw this at Walmart one week early.
@Longondo Is the boxart reversible/does it have some cool art on the inside of the case? i loooove those boxarts and it would persuade me to hold out and get it physically.
@SalvorHardin : How does it end?!
hi peeps, i pre ordered the digital deluxe but the game wont boot up and advice please?
This happened to me with The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker with the Master Quest bonus disc on GameCube. I was the envy of the playground, I can tell you.
@Porky lol any game I every played I can't tell no difference from 30 to 60 fps.i would have missed out on alot of good games if I passed on games because of pointless things
@davowayman it'll be sometime today
@Darkyoshi98 Some games don't necessarily need 60fps, but fast-paced games I most definitely notice a difference. That, and I didn't say I'll pass on this game, but the Switch version. I'll wait for a sale too since it doesn't take Sega long at all to cave in and discount their games.
@Darkyoshi98
maybe im paranoid but i saw online it should have been ready for midnight last night in the uk, i have spoken to nintendo uk and they seemed clueless, saying was not aware of the digitale deluxe early accsess and they would escalate my problem. thing is its £5 extra so if i cant use it i have been mis sold?
Hi everyone (again, sorry!)
Does anyone live in uk and ordered the digital deluxe, that can acctually play it?
Whoa, I've never seen an article written about something I've posted before. Cool! Anyway yeah, game runs great if you're like me and don't mind 30fps. The loading times are a little long, and the game feels a slight bit janky, but I'm also super biased and think that Sonic Adventure 2 was God's gift to humanity in video game form. So it's probably just me! Anyway, this is cool to read. Thanks, NintendoLife!
@HammerKirby Segas just surprised that people are still buying sonic games haha.
Don't get me wrong, i was a huge Sonic fan, but lets face it even SEGA has to be wondering why people still hang onto the franchise given their track record haha
meh, good for you i'll play it on pc with better enhancements shrugs
@kaydeejay1995 This is you? Lucky!
@Snatcher Aye, 'tis me! I feel like a celebrity. Hahaha
@Snatcher @Porky massive difference between SS and SC. SS is slow and pushing minimal geometry. SC is pushing many times the amount of SS at a far higher speed. I'd say 30 was the best bet over an unlocked up to 60fps.
@liveswired Sonic Colours Ultimate is also visually improved over the original to a degree not seen with Skyward Sword's remaster. SS is mostly the same, with some AI enhanced textures here and there and a new UI but it sticks pretty close to the original graphics, and I think it even uses the same engine. Colours Ultimate is on a new engine (original used some proprietary Nintendo stuff, ruling out it's use for a multiplatform release) and features new textures throughout, a modern lighting engine, some improved models, etc. I'd say the improvements put it almost on par with the graphics of Sonic Forces, which had a pretty half baked Switch port - 720p graphics that are worse than the PC's lowest settings, and it still couldn't do 60fps.
Ultimate however looks virtually the same as on PS4 from what I've seen, aside from the framerate, and there's no guarantee reducing the graphics would have achieved 60fps either.
@Porky Because Sonic Colors Ultimate is more of a remake, has new models, remixed music and game modes as well a ton of gameplay changes, while Zelda Skyward Sword is basically like the Zelda Twilight Princess Wii U HD, the Wii game but with HD textures, simple amiibo support and adjusted to work on the Switch kinda like 3D All Stars's port of Galaxy.
@mantarobuster300 You can't Switch it back? Idk man bc the only remix I really like so far is Reach for the stars, But I heard of the music was ruined by making it softer.
@mantarobuster300 What about there easy mode? can you at least turn that back?
@ClassSonicSatAm Except the ports of Mario and Zelda actually work and no Colours Ultimate is more of a bad port with texture swapping extras.
@mantarobuster300 Oh ok, Thank god, Bc I really didn't want T help the whole game.
@Marioracer Sonic Color Ultimate to give credit where it's due they did at least make a full remake of Colors taking advantage of the PS4/Xbox one/PC not just limited to the Switch, there's new models, new modes with Metal Sonic's Rival Rush and Tails being in the game to help you from falling into a pit,
Tails never appeared outside the cutscenes and Metal wasn't even in the game lol While Zelda is just the Wii game with new textures it isn't a full remake like Wind Waker Wii U much like the Wii U's twilight princess remaster and Mario Galaxy is a Nvidia Shield port ahttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C29QBCY57-E&t=53s which has been out for years along with a few other HD Wii games.
@ClassSonicSatAm Wait you can't turn tails off?
Just endured scu till the credits. gutted is the word. twas my fave on wii, its butchered. and im currrently watching the credits with no music, as there isnt any. its as if they didnt realise the 3 songs that played on the wii release wouldnt last long enough with all the extra credits. im astounded.
@ClassSonicSatAm Wait for the day 1 patch? When buggy games are too reliant on such a thing to remedy its issues. The world we live in! I felt bad for those who bought the version which allows them to play 1 week early. Essentially playing without patch and being Sega's quality testers.
@mantarobuster300 Sonic Colors Ultimate was advertised as a remaster by Sega themselves, so no. Those extras don't make a game a remake. Not only did Skyward Sword HD add those you mentioned, they squashed some bugs prevalent in Wii version and tons of quality of life features while Sonic Colors Ultimate added bugs not present in original.
I later discovered Blind Squirrel is the developers behind this remaster, the same Blind Squirrel who did the embarrasingly bad WWE 2K18 port. Yeah, I'm staying clear from this and seeking out the Wii version.
@Porky Well they did release the game early if you brought the deluxe deal on the eshop, you can't even buy it physical in the uk intill next mouth, plus you gotta remember there's still the covid effecting a lot of game developers, while I agree with games being too reliant on patches they can turn a buggy game into a working game (if Sonic 06 had patches it could of fixed a lot of things)
Again Skyward Sword HD is nothing more then just the Wii game with HD textures and Amiibo support, that would be pretty hard to mess up... tho there's still new glitches

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qx0InOeXHN8
I would still call Sonic Colors Ultimate seen it was built on a different engine which is why the Switch is having trouble and not so much on other platforms it has too many changes that aren't in the Wii version not to mention new models, the new customization options for Sonic, Metal Sonic being in the game and a new soundtrack, even the location for red rings are different from the Wii Version.
