Update: As a friendly reminder, Nintendo's current promotion in which you can earn double My Nintendo Gold Points when buying any digital Super Smash Bros. Ultimate product is about to come to an end. If you were thinking of grabbing that second DLC pass or perhaps even the game itself, it wouldn't be a bad idea to snap it up by Sunday 24th October.
Full details can be found in our original article below.
Original Article (Wed 6th Oct, 2021 13:00 BST): The Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster is finally complete thanks to yesterday's grand reveal, and now could be the perfect time to buy the game or any DLC you might be missing.
No doubt in celebration of yesterday's presentation, Nintendo is currently offering double My Nintendo Gold Points on any digital purchase relating to the game. The deal applies to the main game itself, both Fighters Pass collections, and individual Challenger Packs.
As you can see, this offer will remain intact until 24th October, so you've got a couple of weeks to make your mind up. It's certainly easier to decide on each Fighters Pass now that we know all the characters included.
Have you been waiting to see the full roster before picking up that second pass? Are you perhaps considering buying the full game for the first time? Let us know in the usual place.

I wasn’t going to buy bot fighters passes but I guess if I get these points I might
Unfortunately it doesn't apply to just "any" of the DLC, since Mii costumes are excluded.
Already bought it before this, but nice!
Hmm. Might have to grab some now. Shame it doesn’t include mii fighters.
I owned Smash when it first came out but didnt get on with it due to my lack of skill (usually pretty good at conventional beat em ups) and i couldnt get on with moving around the maps and the items etc. I guess it just didnt click. Ive been thinking about getting it back for a while tho as my daughter quite liked it. The collector in me would still go physical tho i think.
In hindsight, I feel like I could of gotten away with just having the first fighter pass and not buying the second (Kazuya was probably the saving grace for me in the second Pass and I don't even play Tekken!). That said, I have no regrets buying both if for no other reason, more music in the game.
Still sad the miracle never happen.
I held off on the second fighter pass. May be time to pick it up now.
@MS7000 oh god I wanted him in!! Think of the stage and music! 😂😁
Maybe next time!
I wasn't too blown away with the second pass. Amazing choices all round, just not for me!
I will get Sora though, and maybe Sephiroth to finally have some decent ff7 music!
@Mario_maniac Awww, really? That sucks, was planning to get the Doom Slayer Mii Costume. Still getting it, but that bonus would've been nice.
Still obscenely overpriced for what amounts to such a miniscule addition to the overall game. 12 additional characters and some costumes now far exceed the asking price for the base game (and even more so if you own a physical release which is often substantially cheaper than the eShop's asking price).
I bought the first fighter pass with around 2700 gold coins and about AU$5.50 to make up the difference. The $5.50 alone felt like too much considering how little content you get for your buck (and I've hardly used the new characters as I mostly play Classic Mode and World of Light).
Hardcore online fans (who are also paying for NSO) would get the most out of it, but I'll hold out on DLC unless they issue a complete edition or issue a 50% discount 2-3 years from now. I won't hold my breath, but I'll be first in line to double-dip should a complete release ever materialise.
@garfreek I am just thinking of Pursuit - Cornered and the Steel Samurai theme getting new arrangements and maybe a medley of tracks throughout Ace Attorney. Possibly have the original Gumshoe theme in game as well.
Smash Bros new remixes/arrangements are great to listen to.
I'm holding out for a physical release that's DLC complete.
Recent releases like Pokémon Sword/Shield, Breath of the Wild, and Splatoon 2 give me hope for that.
I almost got the passes last week. Glad I held out until now
@RupeeClock
I agree that it is coming too!!
Held out on Smash Ultimate for them to finally wrap up and give the Ultimate Ultimate release, physical. Broke down and bought the game, but have not grabbed any DLC and still kind of holding out for it.
Already bought the game and pass long ago.....
gold points expire in a year! I learnt that the hard way when all my gold points (about ££40) suddenly vanished!
I was tempted to buy Smash and all of the DLC packs after the reveal of Sora yesterday (Big KH fan).
But being out of the loop with Smash, I didn't realise that overall it's around £100 for everything! (base game, DLC packs and Mii Fighters)
Granted there is a ton of content, but considering I played previous entries for only a few hrs overall, sadly Ultimate might remain a miss for me.
(and yes I could just buy the base game and Sora standalone, we'll see!)
I'd like to get refunded for rpg pass I mean fighters pass 2
I wish their was a bundle to get for all the Mii costumes like they did for Smash back on Wii U/3DS.
@bimboliquido Early adopters gets screwed on all consoles, but would you wait 4 years only to get 2 x Gold points in Smash?
@Patendo they email you ahead of time to let you know
@CodyMKW I have never had any email from Nintendo to warn me!
❗Nice try, Nintendo but NO ONE buys Games digitally when there's a physical version...
@MS7000 yeah there were some hit or miss in both fighter passes but for me I bought both of them to support the game and I didn’t care who the characters were I new I had some friends that would play the dlc characters. Most the characters I didn’t care for that much like, Joker, Hero, byleth, Steve, Terri, ratty much all of them but for me it’s how the character plays and im pretty good with most the DLC characters.
So it doesn't apply to individual fighters purchases? A shame, really. I'm only interested in three of them.
@Ventilator
Playing the game first and early is a ton more use out the product.... how is that getting the short end? Especially when it was an individual choice to do so, and wanted to?
Enjoy the game however you'd like.
@msvt I guess you missed this part of my post.
"would you wait 4 years only to get 2 x Gold points in Smash?"
@MS7000 how would a fragrance of dark coffee fighting remix sound?! Or the Fey sisters theme!
Yes, I see now
Good point, and agreed!
Not buying it until all the DLC comes for free with it.
@Silly_G imagine complaining about 5 dollars
@Mario_maniac Those were the only ones I hadn't purchased. :/
I still am a bit disappointed we didn’t get Crash... but alas, time to get fighter pass 2.
@bimboliquido Nintendo don't believe in de-valuing games and DLC, and is why their discounts on old games is weak.
In reality Nintendo is greedy, and knows people will buy their games at full price 5 years after release.
Only going to buy Banjo, Sephiroth and Sora when I get money again. Between them and Joker (who I already have), those are the only SSB DLC characters of interest to me.
I doubt this deal will still be in effect when I have money again, though. D: Oh well.
So it's over £100 for the game that released 3 years ago & both dlc packs ?
Might finally get around to picking up the 2nd of 2 DLC characters I want. Already got Hero, now to buy Banjo-Kazooie.
@Patendo Well I get emails from them telling me if any are about to expire
Just my opinion but surely they could have made more money getting people to buy at a lower price point? I love the base game to bits, but the pricing for the amount of content offered is eye watering. In my social group of about 5 smash players, none of us have bothered with it and therefore interest in who will be revealed has slowly dropped off too, knowing we won't pay for them.
I added up the savings I'd get in 2x gold coins from getting both fighter passes. It's like $3 bucks. Canadian.
@Patendo Oh! I see you didn't subscribe to emails from Nintendo
How do i find out if i have already bought the Passes? I cant remember if I bought the second or not
So it didn't even pay to get the passes blind.
@brendathecat Smash Bros. Ultimate was sold at the standard price for a AAA release. It has sold over 23 million copies, not even counting the amount of DLC bought for it. Smash Ultimate also became the best-selling fighting game title of all time during the first 6 months of its release. I'm fairly certain Nintendo are just fine with its performance at the price it was launched at. Besides, by your recommendation, dropping the game by (for example) $10 would mean the game would have had to sell another 6 million copies to be at the same amount of money earned. People bought Smash because they wanted to buy Smash, not because of it's price point. I doubt an extra 6 million customers would have bought it solely for the price. Besides, the game has received multiple discounts from retailers regardless of the base price, which would have attracted those people regardless.
I would agree the amount of content is eye-watering, because that isn't actually a bad thing. In fact, that's what considered a "good thing". There's a significant amount of content in the base game already, without ever having to pay for DLC:
The price for the additional content isn't that unreasonable for a fighting game at all. $5 per character isn't unreasonable; most fighting games charge the same amount per character, and offer less than Smash at that value (Tekken charges $6 per character, and DLC stages are separate. In fact, even the indie title Rivals of Aether required $4 for it's DLC, which only included an extra stage), whereas a Smash DLC offered:
I don't really think it's far to call the game lacking content, or the DLC not value for its money.
How about you make me the sensible offer of getting the game with both DLC passes for the regular full price, instead of this nonsense, huh?
I will continue to wait for the inevitable goty edition with all the dlc included for the base price. Having DLC in smash turned many people away from the game.
I also have a hacked Switch so if Nintendo pisses me off enough I will start spending less money on their stuff.
I still have bills I gotta pay as I still (criminally) don't own this game. So mad about it. Adult life, meh...
@Darktron I agree the base game has tonnes of content and provides great value. My problem (and I emphasize it's my problem) is with the price of the fighter packs being what they are. Lowering the price point may draw in people with less disposable income to give the new fighters a try. At a lower price, the money lost if you don't like the 10 new fighters is easier to deal with than if you sink the price of the whole base game on two fighter passes. Sure, the data on who is buying the dlc is hidden from us so it's pure conjecture from me. But, I guess I am just not happy with the price being set at this level and therefore am happy to just vote with my wallet on this.
