This week's arcade archives release from Hamster Corporation is the 1986 Namco side-scrolling hack 'n slash game, The Genji and the Heike Clans. Here's some PR and screens:
"Players control the hero Taira no Kagekiyo on a mission to the capital city of Kamakura, to defeat the Demon Genji Clan's king Yoritomo. The player will face attacks by Genji Clan soldiers like Yoshitsune and Benkei along the way to Kamakura. Defeat all challengers and gather the Three Sacred Treasures to defeat Yoritomo."
This game is available for $7.99 USD or your regional equivalent. Will you be adding this title to your Switch? Tell us below.

Looks like fun!
Hamster needs a subscription service.
I must admit I can't say i have ever heard of this game. Always good to try out new older games.
Another NAMCO arcade. Oh this bodes well
@Tandy255 Please, no.
Now that's a bit more obscure than PAC Man and Galaga!
Wasn't there a version of this on PC Engine? It feels familiar.
@BionicDodo
Yes, you are correct. There was a version on pc engine.
Ah, Taira, another character I happen to know mostly through Namco x Capcom. Good to be able to experience his origins on Switch.
@Tandy255 agreed. Subscription services works better for games we don't know and want to taste. Classics we do know and want (like many Nintendo 16bit's lineup...) Should ahve the option to buy. In fact both should have both options
I'm a sucker for (previously) Japan-only games.
Onto the wish list pile it goes!
Ahhhhhhhhhh more mediocre
It would be cool if they did a physical release with all the artwork included. Maybe a special edition with all the games from the other platforms.
looks promising. reminds me of getsufumaden with a similar setting.
@Gwynbleidd There are probably 100-200 Arcade Archive games. There is no way to purchase bulk collections. To buy them all, it would be $800-$1600. There has to be a better way to play these games without paying premium prices for each one.
And these aren’t physical copies that we are buying. Or titles that will transfer to another console.
Even Arcade micro transactions at 25 cents a play would be better for the consumer.
A subscription service would be like a yearly pass to an arcade with all the games on free play mode.
These games rarely go on sale, but currently on the NA eShop, many of the Taito titles are 50% off.
When Qix releases, I will pay the $8 premium for that one.
I think a version of this game is on the Turbo Grafx Mini. The PC Engine version. I didn’t really get into it like that.
I never even knew this game existed. The correct description are the Minamoto and Taira clans. Known as the Gempei War , the final naval conflict was known as the Battle of Dan-no-ura and Yoritomo Minamoto became the first Shogun of Japan
@BionicDodo It got a port on PC-Engine as well, but only its PCE sequel "Samurai Ghost" made it to the west officially.
It was released internationally on PS1 (on Namco Museum Vol. 4).
Anyone know if this game is translated like in Namco Museum 4?
@Pally356 Unfortunately, no. I'm very bummed about this as well.
@Tandy255 People should be given the option, but I'm against anything subscription based. I happen to own all of the arcade archives games and some of the aca games.
@KnightRider666 I would prefer micro-transactions over a subscription. How about 25 cents a play and then you own it after $8 of play? They could sell ‘credits’ in $10 bundles. There has to be a better way to try some of these games without going all in.
@Gwynbleidd Not all of them, though there are many that I would dabble in and try. It was easy to drop in 25 cents and try an arcade game (where you usually got game-over very quickly). I would take the micro-transaction model over a subscription model.
And then you would have an Arcade Archives app and all the titles would be in one place.
How hard is it?
Doesn't look like it's the localized version seen in namco museum vol 4 wonder why that is
@kitestar The version in Namco Museum Volume 4 isn't an arcade ROM
Glad to see a Namco game that's not the typical we see in collections over and over, but this one seems to be one of the weakest, for what I've been reading.
Glad to see Namco in Arcade Archives too, but they're cutting the line here, with several games announced for months having to wait even longer now.
Never heard of this but it looks intriguing with the overhead maze, zoomed out sidescrolling, and zoomed in fights. I'll wishlist it.
Holding out for Rally-X next week.
It's odd that the video uses the US localized title in the subtitles (that was only used in the Namco Museum port AFAIK) when Genpei Toumaden definitely doesn't translate to "The Genji and The Heike Clans".
This game's freaky. You're literally fighting your way out of hell in the first level. Dare I say, that's so metal!
@MedusaMadman77 really?? Rally X is next week?? I’d be all over that one! Can’t wait to see what other Namco games are coming from Hamster! 😁
@KnightRider666 Thats very disappointing. I was looking forward to getting this on switch, but I will stick with the Namco Museum Vol. 4 version.
