Now that 2021 is finally behind us, we can set our sights on the bright future ahead that is 2022 – soon to be known as 'the year that that Sonic show aired on Netflix.' Probably.
Yes, Sonic Prime, a 24-episode series from Sega, Wild Brain and Man of Action, is due to hit our screens later this year. With its release getting ever closer, it's now been announced that JAKKS Pacific has teamed up with Sega for a new range of Sonic merchandise themed around the show.
Under the partnership, JAKKS will produce "action figures, playsets, vehicles, plush and other collectibles" as well as costumes and costume accessories under its Disguise label. We can't wait to see these Sonic costumes hit the market – can you imagine? – so we'll make sure to keep an eye out for those.
"SEGA has done a tremendous job telling the story of Sonic through a multitude of medium forums," says Craig Drobis, Senior Vice President of Marketing at JAKKS Pacific. "In addition to the high-octane video games they continue to release and the Sonic Movie 2 coming next year, Sonic Prime’s premiere on Netflix in 2022 will keep fans engaged with the property and give JAKKS a whole new Sonic multiverse to explore through toys and costumes."
"Our customers are not just kids, but also collectors," he says, "and this brand consistently hits the mark with retailers and fans year after year."
Looking forward to the new Sonic series? Will you be hitting the streets in your new Sonic costume when they become available? Let us know with a comment.

What I want is a trailer.
Nothing to know until the trailer. Though hopefully it can't be worse than the last 3D Sonic show (Boom).
@bluecuban I’m watching boom right now. I thought it was great.
@Zarudepie It just felt too inconsistent. Characters, attitudes, everything felt like it would change a little to fit the story archs sometimes, and little was ever really serious. I know it was probably aimed more at kids, but still.
I'll be fair, it was miles better than the old Sonic Underground cartoon.
And here I'm still hung up on "Sonic X." That show was the bomb. Used to watch it on 4Kids TV, along with "F-Zero: GP Legend" and "Kirby: Right Back At Ya!"
That's too much marketing for a relatively short series unless it gets renewed for more seasons.
sees announcement of new Sonic merch. pulls out wallet and sees my last 14 bucks: yeah! keep it coming Sega!!
An anime style sonic would do.
Netflix has a lot of great talent for anime movies/series.
@bluecuban Boom was fine, it did what it wanted and it did it well.
I didn't see the announcement for this so I'm looking at it now. Seems cool, but do we have any information about it other than that it exists and who's making it?
Wild Brain? Are they gonna replace Sonic with the blue Teletubby?
Hooray for more plastic stuff from China. Children and us man-children need it
I'm going to buy all of the sonic prime figures when the drop.
@AstroTheGamosian Same, I'd wake up super early to make sure I didn't miss Sonic X, I would stick around for yugioh and sometimes pokemon. I always regret not watching Kirby. Since a little after the show stopped airing I got hooked on The Amazing Mirror.
What I like so much about X is that because it's anime, it can go from being a comedy to an action show, to a serious drama. Unlike how 1 dimensional Boom is.
I hope jakks continues with their regular Sonic figure line as well
@AlienX Boom was always supposed to be a pure comedy/action show, and it did exactly what it set it out to do.
@PC2 yeah, but the action is terrible, and the humor is out of place for Sonic.
I see a few people talking about Kirby right back at ya! Heck yeah that show is still pretty good!
(Seriously if they add in wolfwrath and sirica in the games they would be quite a few fans that would be happy) Also when are they gonna officially release Kirby on dvd or something? They would get quite a bit of money if the released the entire series on dvd!
I could use a new Metal Sonic figure. Got 3 so far.
@AlienX I wouldn't know about Sonic Boom being one-dimensional. I only ever saw one episode, "Tails' Crush." I mean, it was kinda cool (if not a little ironic) seeing Eggman put aside his enmity with Tails and help him out with his little love problem, giving him the only proper advice out of everyone else on how to woo Zooey (citing the "bro code").
But as I said with how I'm still hung up on Sonic X, I'm still hung up on Cosmo, Tails' first love. I know they're separate universes, so the Tails from Sonic X is not the same Tails as Sonic Boom, but I still tear up when Cosmo sacrificed herself to save everyone from the Metarex.
But if you can, you really should try to find somewhere where you can (legally) watch Kirby: Right Back At Ya! While it was your typical monster-of-the-week anime, it was still fun to watch. And even King Dedede had his own kind of redemption in the end.
But also, if you can, I would recommend you try to watch it in the original Japanese, along with F-Zero: GP Legend (which they didn't air in it's entirety, and abandoned the series). I didn't know this until years later, but 4Kids was notorious for butchering the dubs they worked on, making all sorts of changes to names and scenes, omitting scenes, or getting rid of entire episodes altogether, regardless of their importance to the story.
Frankly, it's a good thing they're no longer in business. The only other company that I know of that did a terrible job of dubbing anime was DIC (their version of Sailor Moon). Funimation, Viz Media, and Sentai Filmworks (formerly known as ADV Films) have a much better track record for dubbing anime, if you ask me.
@bluecuban I actually liked Sonic Boom and was upset when they stopped making new episodes
@AstroTheGamosian I’m watching Sonic X right now😂 just discovered it on Netflix and got excited! That was my show when I was younger
I’m looking forward for the new show!! I’ve always been a sonic fan growing up! And I’m still waiting for my SonAmy to happen😅😅!!!
So Amy better be in the new show and also the 3rd sonic movie!!
@Amessss Which version of Netflix? UK, or US? Or another region? I don't have a VPN, so I won't be able to see it if it's not on the US version.
@AstroTheGamosian the US! I’m not sure if any other places has it yet
@Amessss Sweet! I'll have to check it out, then! I would love to go back and watch the entire series, as I started in medias res back when it originally aired on TV.
