Update [Thu 24th Feb, 2022 15:55 GMT]: Square Enix has now filed a trademark for Gex in Japan:

Original Story [Fri 17th Dec, 2021 02:05 GMT]: Gex - one of the many forgotten video game mascots of the '90s - could potentially be making a comeback.
Following on from Square Enix announcing in 2015 that it would allow developers to create games based on older Eidos' IP as part of the 'Square Enix Collective' project, the company has now filed a trademark for 'Gex' in Europe (thanks, Gematsu).
@Gematsu - And Square Enix filed a trademark for Gex in Europe on December 15: https://euipo.europa.eu/eSearch/#details/trademarks/018622048
While this might not necessarily mean anything, the fact it's gone to this much effort for Gex has some fans of the anthropomorphic gecko convinced something is going to happen in the near future:
"I’d say 'this means nothing' but Gex is SO irrelevant currently that this HAS to mean SOMETHING"
The Gex games were originally developed by Crystal Dynamics - the team known in more recent times for its work on Marvel's Avengers. If you were a Nintendo gamer back in the '90s, you should at least have some memories running about as Gex on the N64 or Game Boy Color.
Would you be interested in seeing Gex make a return? Tell us down below.

I grew up playing Enter the Gecko!
You know what I love about Gex? Consistency.
Good hopefully they don't shame the gecko. I did enjoy Enter the Gecko and Deep Cover Gecko on the N64.
I predict this will gain as much traction as the Bubsy reboot did.
Is that the one with big luigi or the ***** board game with the animals?
"This is gonna be weirder than 4th of July at Rick James place"
Scott The Woz will never let us forget Gex.
Are the gex games suppose to be good? Because I really like collect-a-thons. Heck I remember having a bit of a collect-a-thon obsession.😅
I might try it, just as long as Gex doesn't try to sell me car insurance.
HELL. YEAH!
The spirit of 3DO lives on! Instant buy for me!
Please Square, make it happen!
It's tail time! Lock and load little lizard!
@Greatluigi The first Gex was one of the best 2D platformers of it's era. First on 3DO, then on Playstation. The 3D ones that came later on PSX and N64 were excellent fun! This is excellent news!
oh please oh please
Wishful thinking at best. This is just a company renewing one of their ips yet again.
People really need to stop being so naive.
Gex 64 was one of the first N64 titles I owned (with GoldenEye) I have a LOT of nostalgia so I would be unironically HYPED for Gex to come back
Ha! Just today I turned on the Saturn and popped in The Horde and that Crystal Dynamics "Dodge ball" video played.
Watching the montage of games, I thought I should play some Gex.
Interesting they might bring him back.
This is great news, I still play Gex on my 3DO from time to time!
I tried replaying the third one recently and found its knockoff Austin Powers humor very cringeworthy.
Did somebody say Gex?
@Sambuc 3DO! You sir, are a true gamer! And Gex 3DO was an awesome game! Long live the 3DO!
Still love Gex 2 and Gex 3. It’s tail time!
I feel like if this is real, we all have Scott the Woz to thank
@Greatluigi The first 2D one is great. I enjoyed the 3D games too, but even for the time the camera was bad. Might be a hard thing to forgive if you tried them for the first time now.
I’m interested. I loved playing Gex 3 Deep Cover Gecko.
I would like to thank Gex for helping me on my journey of realizing that I'm truly not a full-time vegan.
Hmm, I smell a second Balan's wonderworld. And everyone is talking about Scott, but what about Nitrorad? Or was it Antdude?
Yes!!! Please. Loved Gex 3 on N64 even though it was janky.
I had Deep Cover Gecko on PS1, but I don't think I ever made it past the Christmas world as a kid (it was like the first world after the tutorial, lol).
I actually dug it up and tried to play it in earnest a few years ago and actually managed to make it all the way to a pyramid/Egyptian world before bouncing off (and that was more because I got to a point where I couldn't figure out where to go next more than anything).
Interesting curio from the era, and if they bring it back I hope to see some modern QOL updates, but hope they keep the 90's humor in tact.
Oh yeah! Tail time!
Isn’t he Yoshi’s tax-paying cousin?
I'd buy it as long as all the references will be just as dated as the ones he made originally. Let Gex talk to me about hashtags & selfies, shilling NFTs with Bill Nye, and the ice bucket challenge at Zendaya's house.
insert scott the woz references
Don't do that. Don't give me hope.
Seriously, though. If Gex comes back I will be over the moon ecstatic.
This is like a luau at Mel Blanc's house!
Maybe we'll get a collection, or atleast the original on the eshop or... something.
yeeeee! geckoooo
Maybe they wanna make money off Scott the Woz’s Gex jokes?
My uncle who works at Square tells me they're working on a Smash Bros. clone where the whole roster consists of forgotten 90s mascots. Can't wait to beat up Gex with Cool Spot and Zool.
(Disclosure: I am trolling.)
Don't drink tap water at Jerry Garcia's.
Gex was one of my first PS1 games, i had never heard of it when i saw the cover in a video game store back in’96 but i thought i looked cool so i begged my parent and they bought it for me after hours, days, weeks of nagging - and i loved it!

Everybody else: cool
Me: . . .
Also me: GEX NIGHT AT MY HOUSE
These games were always favorites of mine as a kid, rented Deep Cover Gecko so many times with my brother, good times.
I have memories of reading reviews that said Gex was average at best, and saved my money for better N64 games…
Gex was actually quite awesome at the time - I only had a Mega Drive (genesis) but my friend's parents bought him the 3DO console and it was awesome. I know it's getting a lot of bad rap lately but and the time is was very spectacular. And the Gex game was one of the highlights))
I love that the entire comment section is filled with Scott The Woz jokes. Gex owes his relevance to Toledo's resident virgin, and his friends
I never forgot Gex. He was the coolest of the mascots to my young brain.
I enjoyed Gex games when I was younger and I was sad to see when they cancelled that PS2 3D Gex game. Hopefully this is the start of some good news to come in the near future for the IP.
I loved the original on 3DO back in the day. I hope they do well by the property.
some games are better to remain forgotten
yes, just absolutely yes.
I remember him
Ah, I remember this guy. Played his game on the PlayStation actually.
Haha that frickin lizard, oh sorry you wouldn’t get it you’re not a Gex fan
@NeonPizza Yes! But first... GEX!!!!!
This is interesting. I actually enjoyed the first game back in the 90's.
@Grail_Quest The old Konami logo makes me think of Snatcher on Sega CD. Hideo Kojimas best game.
@NeonPizza Clockwork Knight was really awesome too. You remember Vectorman on Genesis? One of the few actual 3D games on the system.
Gex trademark renewal is more about the PS Plus rumour playing old PS1 games and not about a reboot
Such a classic Gex move; makes you think it’s not Gex, then comes out and says, “I’m a bad tennis game!” It’s right! Gex is TERRIBLE tennis game!
My first experience with Gex was uh.. let's just say it was not really a good one. All I'll say is someone left a bookmark in a book once and I was left with an unfortunate surprise...
But anyway, I do love Gex and I'd love to see something done with him! :0
Had the first Gex on 3DO, unfortunately parted ways with both:(
This is super cool. The Gex titles were a fun time and his humor just clicks with me. If he does come back, I hope they keep him dated in terms of the jokes.
The idea of a new Gex intrigues me. There are two things they could do with this character: either have him say the same dated jokes from the '90s, or make him say things that are relevant now, but won't be relevant 10 years from now.
@JustMonika Yes! Snatcher was amazing. Along with it's successor Policenauts, on 3DO... which coincidentally was also the birthplace of Gex!
@Axelay71 Alot of us old 3DO gamers on here! I loved that system. So far ahead of it's time. I wish the 3DO M2 would have made it to market. It would have been my primary "next gen" system at the time.
@UglyCasanova Agreed!
@Grail_Quest totally agree mate, that system deserved so much more. So much promise, let down by support in the end. And regards to 3DO M2, God was I disappointed when that got canned. Really thinking of buying the Panasonic Fz-10 for my collection.
Not sure what excites more...a potential Gex comeback, or the 3DO memories in this thread. Such a underrated console, and Crystal Dynamics did great work.
We can all thank Scott The Woz and videogamedunkey for this.
Also, I really wish Square Enix would've brought back Deus Ex for the long-awaited conclusion to the Adam Jensen Trilogy instead of Gex. And also, an official Deus Ex 1 remaster for consoles and PC that would basically be an official release of the Deus Ex: Revision mod.
Maybe a remaster of Human Revolution that has all of the features and fixes from both original and Director's Cut versions would be great as well. We can even have a downgraded Switch port of Mankind Divided and a port of Invisible War.
I would also love a Xenogears: Director's Cut remaster, even if it has to be a Nintendo Switch-exclusive due to Monolith Soft now being owned by Nintendo.
They need to make a Gex vs Bubsy game.
@Deliesh
It was during a time when making film references was hip and trendy.
I have a feeling that Dana Gould isn't coming back. He said in an interview that he wasn't happy with the pay he got compared to how much Crystal Dynamics was earning with selling the games.
I've never heard of him
@TheFox Bubsy isn't in the same league as Gex. Bubsy can wallow in the mire with Trevor McFur and Kao the Kangaroo. Gex is up there closer to Spyro territory.
@Grail_Quest Oh no! I actually like Trevor McFur. Not saying it's amazing, but I think it's a decent game.
@Seb_is_the_best Is it Gex night? Oh, I love Gex night,
@PikaPhantom You know what I love about Gex? It's Gex night.
@NightBeast The 3DO and everything on it gets a bad rap because of YouTubers making videos "OMG, everything on 3DO was Plumbers Don't Wear Ties!"
@TheFox So many great games on 3DO! Alone in the Dark 1 & 2, Bust-A-Move, D, Escape from Monster Manor, Gex, Guardian War, Crash N' Burn, Dragon's Lair, Myst, Shockwave, Starblade, best version of Road Rash, first ever Need for Speed, Total Eclipse, Killing Time, Myst, Wing Commander 3 (incredible to see that on a console at the time), Samurai Showdown, Super Street Fighter 2, Wolfenstein, Star Wars: Rebel Assault, Return Fire, Lucienne's Quest, Lost Eden, Flashback, Out of this World. The system was straight fire!
Gex remade/enhanced to HD, or another emulated N64 game?
The games are fun to play.
However, the Graphics haven't aged well. I've played it on my PS3, and my console often crashed when emulating it.
I'll rather buy a proper port, than play it on the Nintendo Switch's Online service app. I'd also say this about any Zelda, Banjo-Kazooie, Mario, Donkey Kong, Sonic, or Gantlet game.
If limitedrungames sold a physical copy of it, that is where I'd buy it.
Bout time this makes a come back
@Personausermike who cares really I got all 3 for the original ps1 physical copies and the same 2 on the 64 lol not to mention I also have them downloaded on my ps3 from the Playstation store
@Darkyoshi98 I have all 3 digital on my PS3 as well as my Vita. But we are a rare breed that like Gex (Scott the Woz also likes Gex), and that actually have it. I just mentioned WHY this is happening is most likely due to Plus doing this.
Gex is not Gex without Dana Gould. What made Gex unique was that he had snarky, smart one liners and pop culture references. It was ahead of its time and makes more sense now than the late 90's.
Loved this game.
@Greatluigi They were allright, not Bubsy 3D bad but not out there with Banjo Kazooie.
They had pop culture reference that dated quickly, one liners were over used and camera that was just plain evil and overal a lack of refinement.
Great games? not by any sense of the word but they were allright as far as I can remember.
@dopey-grin I owned Gex 64: Enter the Gecko and Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko on the N64.
Gex also appear as an unlockable character in Hot Shots Golf 2 and Mad Dash Racing(but he was voiced by Billy West in that game).
I literally fired up Gex for the first time this weekend and was surprised to hear Leslie Phillips say, "I feel like I'm in Boy George's pants"! Looking forward to playing through them, was Gex 2 on N64? I can only find 1 & 3.
ROCK ON LITTLE LIZARD!!
“Note to self: don’t step on any brown, squishy rocks”
GEX NIGHT WILL HAPPEN YET AGAIN!!
I know Gex on N64 didn't get good reviews, but I enjoyed it a lot as a kid. Not sure if I will still like it as an adult.
'What the **** is this!?'
“Is that a gun?”
“No. It’s Gex.”
I remember this from way back when! Along with Glover and Chameleon Twist. I'd be interested in this random revival, nice little blast from the past. Also who is this Scott person??
I can't say that I'm overly familiar with the character or the games, however, I do love platformers so at the very least, if a new game (or an updated collection) came out, I would definitely keep an eye on it.
@TheBigK Scott The Woz is a game review channel with comedy skits, I hope that was a serious question
I think i have 300 hours playing Gex on my 3DO ! Pleaseee 2D Gex. I have no fun playing 3D adventure games. 2D please!!!
Square-Enix has been pushing older licenses, like Actraiser, Front Mission, Live A Live, or Chrono Cross, and with Gex's recent resurging popularity, I could see SE wanting to capitalize. I really hope they do; I'd love to see these games brought back in some capacity, even just a port.
I remember playing Gex on my 3DO
That frickin lizard, oh sorry you wouldn’t get this if you aren’t a Gex fan
I would definitely be ok with the classic games coming back in remastered form, Deep Cover Gecko is great, rented it a ton as a kid.
@Poco_Lypso well yeah but not Gex
Gex was such a cool mascot, and a very cool idea for different worlds based on different movies/movie genres, I am hoping he will make a comeback, he does have a lot of personality.
I went to the Mario Movie Drive-In in VRChat last night and a low poly Gex prop was just sitting there with me. I will never forget Gex. Love him and his lil quips x3
This is just funny
Yeah yeah. Everyone grew up playing Gecko. Its cool hes coming back but you gotta admit the game on psx wasnt amazing. It was ok. I am not one to be blinded by nostalgia
Yes I had Gecko on the 3DO great game, great system which didn't see its potential unfortunately.
So, he’ll be remade to be accepting of all sexualities, races, woke ideals, and so on and so forth. Throw in a non binary sidekick! 😂
@BirdBoy16 Ah thank you! It was indeed serious. I don't watch much gaming content on YouTube aside from a couple channels devoted to history and development stuff. Apparently Scott is a big shot and I've been living under a rock 😅
Sweet. Such fond memories of that wise cracking lizard growing up.
@TheBigK yeah he’s definitely becoming popular, his videos even appear on a tv network
I'd buy a Gex remaster. They weren't particularly great games but I remember them fondly.
@BirdBoy16
What one and are they filtered.( obviously that would depend on the channel now that I think about it.)
@TheBigK
Check out peanut butter gamer
Gex remaster: Sells 10 million copies
Square Enix: The Gex remaster failed to meet our sales expectations
@blindsquarel some channel called G4
I would be very very happy if they made a HD collection and remaster of all 3. I absolutely adored those games.
@Acptest Yeah! Fellow 3DO owner here too! Favorite system! Nint3nDO!
@ATaco I thought they were great. Especially the first on on 3DO. The PSX version of part 2 was also really good!
I would buy a remastered collection or a sequel! Bring it on Square!
@iLikeUrAttitude youre probably right, but personally any hype is good hype, even in vain.
@khululy ya ding dong, thats WHY these games are incredible. The dated references are great because theyre dated
gex night is great, but id prefer a release of knack 3 please
These were the biggest pieces of trash created for a Nintendo console, I loved them! 😂

A Gex trilogy?
