Nintendo is set to launch a 'European Online Challenge' for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, with the event running from 18:00 to 21:00 (CEST) / 17:00 to 20:00 (BST) on May 20th, 2022.
The event allows participants to compete in 1 vs 1 matches via the 'Online Tourney' menu; players will be limited to two lives with matches set to last up to 5 minutes apiece. Stages will be limited to Battlefield and Omega variants with items, hazards, and Final Smash meters turned off; so this will be a true test of your Smash skills.
After the event concludes, participants within the top ten of the leaderboard will be award 2500 gold points for My Nintendo, with 1000 points awarded to the remaining top 100 participants. Winners will be announced by Nintendo on May 30th.
In the terms and conditions laid out by Nintendo, it states that participants must have an active Nintendo Account registered to one of the eligible countries (check out Nintendo's announcement for a full list) along with access to Nintendo Switch Online. If players change their country settings during the event or any time up to the retrieval of prizes, they will be disqualified.

Here have some pointless coins which aren't real. It's just non tradable crypto currency they are giving out here.
And i'm crap without items and Final Smash, I just jump off by mistake sometimes
@Bunkerneath 2500 gold points is £25 to spend on the eShop, that's not pointless.
Well, good to see Nintendo doing something with smash that somewhat involves the competitive scene
I do feel like they could do more than £25 for the top 10. Doesn’t feel like much of a grand prize
Isn't every Smash game an 'online challenge'?
canned laughter
Geddit? Huh? Because online isn't perfect...no? That's a thing gamers say...right?
I've always wanted to participate in these, but never knew how they worked. If you manage to get the gold points, do they just get added to your Nintendo Account?
Regardless, I'll definitely give this a go. Time to make people mad with Ice Climbers, Cloud and Steve!
@Dogorilla Only if you want non-physical games. They can't even be bothered to create a physical trophy or something? Sorry, but it's cheap
@Bunkerneath You could use it for DLC as that rarely gets a physical release. I personally would prefer a monetary reward rather than a dust gathering trinket. I wouldn't even graze the top 1 million playing this though so they could give away whatever for this for all the good it would do me.
Maybe they should have polled the players to find out what they would prefer first to gauge overall reaction.
I'm terrible at 1v1s, I need Pokeballs and Assists to win.
Maybe a baseball bat too.
@martynstuff Yeah, you're playing vs. the netcode more than the other player sometimes. I don't know how many times I'd narrowly beat a talented opponent on a good connection, only to get cheesed by some DK or Ness who only knows three attacks on the next game because there's an extra quarter second of input lag. It's why I finally had to quit playing online.
Meh. Not worth the £3.50 (Edit: £3.49 because I know someone will mention it otherwise) entry fee for online (assuming free trial has been used). Not to mention actually assuming the Internet play is decent because I remember online play on Smash Ultimate being terrible connection wise (not my internet either, I did check).
Does that mean theres smash icons?
@Bunkerneath I don't know about you, but I prefer something useful instead of a useless piece of metal. Also, the same logic applies if the price was a trophy instead of digital currency: it would only be worth it for some.
"(...) players from regions of great geographical distance to central Europe (such as the Azores and the Svalbard archipelago) are not allowed to participate in the event and are blocked from entering the event through technical measures."
I’ll try and get those 1000 points. Good luck everyone
