Do you know what's missing from Super Mario Odyssey? More Marios. At least, that's what CraftyBoss thought about the game, so the team has worked to create a brand new mod that adds a brand new multiplayer mode to the game. And it lets you and up to 10 friends all play as Mario. That's 10 times the Mario power in one of the best Super Mario games ever!
As reported by VGC, the mod — while having just been released — is still under development, and CraftyBoss is taking feedback on the mod as well as ideas for brand new additions.
As it stands, the mod doesn't just let you play with up to 10 people online, but it also allows you to play through the game together, sharing Moon collection between all of you, making level progression even quicker.
Here's a summary of what the mod currently offers:
Have fun exploring kingdoms with friends, playing game modes, or beating the game as fast as possible! This mod is still early in development, so expect bugs and un-refined aspects as we work hard to improve it and make the mod as polished as possible.
Features
- Explore Kingdoms together with up to 10 People
- Almost every capture in the game is synced between players
- Full 2D and Costume models syncing
- Moon Collection is shared between all players
- Custom Configuration Menu (Accessible by holding ZL and selecting any option in the pause/start menu)
- Support for custom Gamemodes (WIP)
While this helps with collecting some of those more-random Power Moons you might come across, the real joy is the potential chaos you can create with all of Cappy's abilities. 10 Marios also means 10 Cappys after all, so you can come up with some silly games.
Some of these abilities — like the frog, the dinosaur, and the Hammer Bros — are shown off in this delightful trailer created by Super Mario Odyssey speedrunner and YouTuber SmallAnt. Check it out below!
What do you think of the mod? Let us know if you think 10 players would make Super Mario Odyssey even more fun in the comments!

Have already watched many of those hide and seek streams from SmallAnt and friends. It's really amazing what CraftBoss has managed to make here
The hide and seek videos these guys have made so far using these mods are really great viewing, and look like so much fun. If only Nintendo would include features like this in their official version, so modding/hacking your console isn't required.
I still find the fact that this was even possible to begin with to be astounding and to see it working as well as it is (from both this trailer and the many videos online showcasing it) is even more impressive. Hats off to these guys!
Quality. Credit to the team
Why do people put this much effort into someone Nintendo will shut down?
Modding is such a cool thing that communities can do, I really wish they weren't such a huge "no-no" from Nintendo's perspective.
i hate to play a platform with another friend. i don't wanna think if i have to play with 9 friends more
They sure put a lot of effort into the trailer. I loved watching it, but I'd dread to play this with 9 other people, hahaha
I discovered their Mario Odyssey hide and seek videos a month ago and they are just really fun to watch.
@steventonysmith Actually, Crafty didn't touch the source code of the game itself, but only added to it. The source code is what is copyrighted here, so there's nothing Nintendo can do against this. They can try, but there's (apparently) no legal grounds.
@Chrisje4
It's still their IP, they only way you can play this mod to to obtain an illegal ROM, and they have a lot more money and lawyers than Crafty. So they can and will take him to court if he doesn't immediately take it down. Also the song he used in the trailer is definitely copyrighted
@steventonysmith yes as we all know, these fan made things that get uploaded to the Internet get taken down and are never seen ever again /s
@Doktor-Mandrake
Apparently Chris didn't know
Hasn’t this been a thing for months?
@steventonysmith Oh, I know things get taken down (aggressively). But why hasn't this disappeared already then? It's been around (and sort of viral with millions of views on YouTube) for at least half a year. The players of this mod so far do use Switches and original copies of the game, so that couldn't be a reason to take it down. I'd say Nintendo already would have done this, as there was money made because of this mod.
Same goes for the announced BotW multiplayer mod (or the 'competition' that has been going for it). It has been mentioned in various game news outlets, but as far as I know the project still lives.
I don't exactly know how it works with game music, as people can stream games without get DMCA'd (or an equivalent of that law/organisation/whatever it is), so maybe Nintendo could take the trailer down for that.
In the end, I'm not an expert on this, but I thought I would share what I've heard during some of the streams of people playing and talking about this mod.
@steventonysmith Okay.. who's Chris and what's the relevancy?
@steventonysmith
Creating a ROM of a game you physically own is not illegal to my knowledge.
@Duffman92
"Can I download a Nintendo ROM from the internet if I already own the authentic game?
It is illegal to download a Nintendo ROM from the internet whether or not you own an authentic copy of that game.
Although Australian copyright law now allows limited 'format shifting' of certain copyright material for private and domestic use, this right does not allow the copying of video games to a different format.
Also, the limited right which the Copyright Act gives to make backup copies of computer programs does not apply to Nintendo video games."

@steventonysmith You do realize AM2R, a game that Nintendo forced the og developers to shut down, is still being developed and available to play right now?
Nintendo can't do anything to an already released game on the internet. The only thing they can do is make the original developers to stop hosting and develping it. Doesn't stop other people from taking up the mantle
@SolarisPolaris
Yes they can and they will
@steventonysmith well, why do we live if we're just going to die
@steventonysmith
Downloading is illegal that‘s for sure. But what does "format shifting" cover? If you own a device that lets you copy a switch cartridge to your PC and use it only for yourself - is that illegal as well? Genuine question. I guess there is no definitive answer, yet.
Whatever it is, I think the modding community simply has a lot of fun experimenting with games like SMO or BOTW and ultimately the worst thing that can happen to them is that they have to take it down. They don‘t lose any money.
@Duffman92
Format shifting would constitute taking a physical cartridge and making a digital copy of it. I think if the modding community took the time they spend on modifying stolen content and sat down with those skills and creativity they could make their own independent games.
@steventonysmith Spoken like a broken record lol
@steventonysmith
I think you have to start somewhere. To me it feels more like playing around with the content than actually harming it. And I guess that would not be a problem, if it weren‘t for the "sharing it with everybody" attitude. That’s what makes things a bit more complicated.
@Duffman92
I think that modding older games, or PC games that legally allow you to mod them is fine. But modding a modern still sold in stores game like Mario Odyssey, in which you have to obtain illegally on your PC to even mod it is wrong
The problem with modding current titles that don't have official provided tools and is not a PC released title promotes more piracy because people are the Mods and either want to mod games themselves or play the mods. This is why Nintendo will and should go after Nintendo Switch game modders with their full legal force
@steventonysmith Because they can and they want to.
Sounds even better then the SM64 online
Comment section: "Ah ****, here we go again ..."
@steventonysmith Do Nintendo pay you? I seriously hope so, or your weird insistence that no one mod their games (which people will always do, regardless of how many DMCAs and C&Ds they throw around) seems incredibly sad. Unless you have some sort of financial investment in them then I'd understand, but if not: no amount of crying you could possibly do in comment sections will ever stop Nintendo games being modded and pirated. You can wish your absolute hardest for daddy Miyamoto to wield his lawyer sword, but it won't do anything. It will happen.
@D9Drainer
I know there will always be those who drain the overall economy and are a plague to common decency but I will continue to hope and relish in every action Nintendo or any other creator takes on protecting their IPs.
