If you're a fan of all of these new retro handhelds but don't quite have the budget for them, then we might just have the thing for you today. RGhandhelds today revealed the Retro Pixel Pocket, a little Game Boy-esque machine with four buttons and a clear casing that is just what it says it is — pocket-sized!
The console is being produced by modding website FunnyPlaying and, while it's still in the early stages of development, we can see the kind of aesthetic the company is going for just from the prototype RGhandhels is showing off above.
Retro Dodo has shared more details about the Game Boy Pocket-inspired console, which takes inspiration from similar consoles like the Analogue Pocket. Retro Dodo believes the console is running on Android 7.1, which is an incredibly stable operating system. But the real selling point of the system is the price, which the producer is attempting to build the console as a sub-$100 handheld. Phwoar!
If that's not enough for you, here are all the features and specs of the console:
- 1.3GHZ Quad-Core AllWinner A64 CPU
- Mali-400 MP2 GPU
- 1GB RAM
- 3.1″ IPS Display (720 x 720)
- 3000MAH Battery
- 8GB Internal Storage
- USB-C Charging
- MicroSD Slot
- WiFi
The console is due to launch in August or September, according to RGhandhelds, but these projects can take time. And, considering this could potentially emulate PlayStation games alongside Game Boy, Neo Geo, Game Gear, Mega Drive, and GBA games!
What do you think of the Retro Pixel Pocket? Will you be keeping an eye out for the console? Let us know in the comments!

This is a really impressive piece of novelty but seems alot more trouble than its worth.
You could emulate all the games shown with just your phone or even 3DS if you hack it.
I have an Odin and while that’s my go-to for retro games, I also have a Miyoo Mini which is an incredible micro Game Boy-inspired system that plays up to PlayStation and is out now. I highly recommend the Miyoo Mini. Also the RG351V NintendoLife previously reviewed.
I checked out the video and it is a pretty nice, has the look and feel of the Game Boy Color. I like it!
I got my Miyoo Mini yesterday so I'm good (and very pleased!). Great stuff though these retro handhelds!
Pretty neat little system, but for that price I'll opt for the Retroid Pocket 2+.
but it also looks very cheap
Powkiddy v90 is like $40 and has a better form factor.
❗️I'll stick to my 'BittBoy: Pocket-Go'.
RG351v here.
I really hope someone makes one of these things that's not so frustrating to load/use. The RG works fine for 8-16 bit basic stuff and it's nice that it runs TurboCD out of the box but for the life of me I can't find any good thorough guides on SegaCD/NeoGeo/Mame setup.
And I'm not jailbreaking a Switch or buying a Steam Deck. Just overkill for what I'm looking for.
@iLikeUrAttitude I know what you mean. I have MAME on my galaxy. Enjoying the punisher, aliens vs predator, captain commando, xmen arcade game, turtles in time, warriors of fate, all the classic side scrollers. And playing them with a razer kishi makes it all effortless.
That square screen is by far the most interesting thing about the whole device. 720x720 @ 3.1inches makes is a very high 328ppi. That's a bit sharper screen than all current iPads, and certainly a lot sharp than all three Switch models.
If bought primarily to play GB, GBC, Game Gear and Neo Geo Pocket/Colour they should look amazing on this screen.
Shame the overall design is kinda fugly though.
I see no cartridge slot so that's an instant no from me. If Analogue manages to have consistent stock of the Pocket in the future once their initial shipment obligations are met, that's probably the route I'll go down.
@sword_9mm
I have a 351v also, the best thing to do is to convert bin and cue files into single chd files. CHDMAN is a program that can help you with that. Also, having a custom OS like AmberElec can really help with usability and compatibility.
Why would someone carry around a one function plastic brick to play on such a small screen while having a phone in the other pocket is beyond me. You could have thousands of roms with tons of QoL improvements on something you were already going to carry anyway.
@SteamEngenius Because I want to listen to YouTube on my phone while I play the games. I like to party.
Meanwhile, someone who works at Nintendo of America told me this week that the GameBoy games ARE coming to switch online so…
nice, I love transparent cases
Nope. I think right now I will stick on to my Miyoo Mini
I was interested until I saw the screen size. 3.1” is too small for my aging eyes.
Cute little device for sure. It's been a great year for retro gamers. Might just have to add it to the collection
@SteamEngenius tbh you don't get the feedback of the buttons and if you're going to carry around a snap on controller this doesn't offer much of a difference in regards to size.
The trimui is small enough that it kind of disappears in your pocket.
Too late. We already have the miyoo mini v2
@iLikeUrAttitude A lot of people don't want to play on their phone because touch controls are already bad but worse with classic gaming and most 3DS systems can't be modded because they've been updated beyond a point where that's possible.
Moo looks great! Just went and checked it out, thanks.
@Lyricana I understand the preference of wanting to play on a console with buttons instead of a phone but the part about 3DS' you said isn't true at all.
Every 3DS is capable of being modded, Luma CFW software is constantly updated to this day to keep track of the updates Nintendo puts out to fight the homebrewing community and loses.
The 3DS is probably the easiest nintendo console to hack with it only requiring a micro sd card and thats it.
I Just hacked a japanese DSi for 20 bucks, I am fine
@iLikeUrAttitude I had read that you couldn't mod a system above 11.4, I want to say. Hmm.
Those buttons don’t look very good quality-wise. That’s a huge part of these machines that no one seems to mention. Even the Analogue Pocket, which is amazing in every other way, still doesn’t have a great dpad.
720x720 is such an awkward resolution. Basically every console ever is going to be stretched out and/or windowboxed.
@SteamEngenius Some of us prefer to use buttons, or prefer real hardware to emulation, or don't use cell phones.
@Asaki actually NES, SNES, GB, GBC will all have pixel perfect ratio as their aspect ratios were basically 1:1. Analog Pocket is also 1:1 if I'm not mistaken which I believe this device is trying to imitate
The Miyoo Mini is the king of mini gameboy handhelds, I also love my RG351V. But the Steam Deck has taken over my gaming life, decent portable PS2 emulation has been the dream for so long.
@XO-Frats Aspect ratio isn't the same thing as resolution. GB/C is 160x144 (not 1:1), a 4x scale would get you 640x576 with windowboxing, or to fill the entire width you'd need an uneven scale of 4.5.
Analogue Pocket is 1600x1440, so it's perfectly 10x scaled to fill the entire screen.
NTSC S/NES is 256x224 (sort of), also not 1:1, but it's supposed to be stretched to 4:3, so unless you have a pretty high-res screen (at least 1024x672 if my recollection is correct), there are going to be some issues no matter what.
I do see an argument for 1:1 being a sort of compromise for also supporting vertical oriented games like MAME and Atari Lynx, though. There isn't really a one-size-fits-all solution for MAME when it comes to LCD.
Yeah, I didn't say perfect 1:1 either, I said basically. Will still be closer to filling the screen than most handheld emulators. I get your point to though
I know what I want and I want it now! Finally a Game Boy emulation handheld with no sticks, a very nice display and a potentially decent OS. I like the Miyoo Mini, it's cute but a bit too flimsy for my hands. That GBC/GBP size is perfect, everything smaller does not really work for me.
