Even though Super Smash Bros. Ultimate "ended" with the release of the last Fighters Pass character — Kingdom Hearts' Sora — it still hasn't felt "over" for us. That's because Masahiro Sakurai, Mr. Smash Bros. himself, has continued a long-standing tradition of posting a new screenshot from the game every single day.
We're envious of pretty much all of them, as Sakurai managed to capture characters, locations, and moments in such a perfect way that really understands the characters. In fact, seeing these screenshots every day has brought us a little bit of happiness — and envy. But it looks like this tradition might soon be over, as Sakurai has admitted on Twitter that he's almost run out of screens!
Calling it a "workday ritual", the Smash Bros. series director admits he even took an extra 200 "as we were wrapping up development", which means he's had some of these stored for a while now!
With today's announcement, Sakurai shared his next shot — one of Wii Fit Trainer in Flat Zone X bouncing off of the Fire life net.
Sakurai hasn't specified how many screens he has left, but it's got to be less than 30 if we're running out this month.
Fans have flocked to Twitter to mourn the end of this tradition, and also thank Sakurai for continuing to share screenshots from the game. The shots regularly rack up thousands of likes and retweets on the platform, so it'll be weird not seeing them on our timeline every day. But Sakurai deserves a break, for sure.
A few months ago, we rounded up some of our favourite screenshots from Sakurai's Twitter, so have a little peruse before going on over to his account (where you can also fawn over his adorable kitty) to find some more recent ones.

Is there a more screenshot friendly game than Smash Bros.? It's crazy how creative the community can be with them.
I'm sure there's some pictures during the time SSBU was in the middle of development; they would be really intriguing. Use those when the ones with references or just outright silly pictures are used up!
My dream is for Sakurai to direct a remaster of Kid Icarus Uprising, then come back to Smash Ultimate with a third Fighter's Pass instead of making a new game altogether.
I think I would rather have him making computer games than posting images.
@Not_Soos How bout some more modes instead of characters I've grown tired of repeating the same stuff constantly which is why I went back to brawl and smash 4 with a tiny bit of melee on the side.
It's cool he will just start putting up screenshots of him playing MultiVersus next!
Fix the game with a proper balance patch.
@dew12333 Yeah, we should just chain him to his desk at his office. Screw him for having fun.
IF NO ONE GOT ME
I KNOW SAKURAI GOT ME
CAN I GET AN AMEN?
Well it at gave us ma plenty of great pics!
@Marioracer Yeah, I'd love for them to add missing modes as well, like Smash Run or a proper story mode as paid DLC. I'd even take a remaster of the Subspace Emissary.
@EthanHobbes You follow Anything Bot on Twitter, don't you?
@Not_Soos Honestly, I think I would prefer a third fighters pass so much compared to getting a new game with less characters.
@Snatcher Finally someone who agrees with me.
it's the end of an era 🥹
@dew12333 Well he's obviously saved all of these in a folder and is posting them one per day. It's more likely to be an assistant than him directly, too. This takes, what, 30 seconds? Absolute maximum.
It couldn't possibly get in the way of him making games, but you know that
August new character pass 🤣just kidding.
I stopped playing smash i wish more content was added like new cloths/alternate costumes.
I wanted to say new stages, but man smash already has alot lol.
I really hope a new smash is in the works. I need a new subscace style adventure/storymode.
@Marioracer Finally someone who agree with me!
Maybe Sakurai could just start over with the same list of screenshots, beginning with his first ever and going all to way to whichever the last one in August will be.
@PorllM Of course, but obviously I would like him inventing the next masterpiece more than anything else.
@Indielink Fun at work, Where?!?!!!
@PtM thanks for the correction.
Although, the point of my post was that worrying this takes away from his next project is silly. What you said doesn’t really change that
Take a break, then release more Fighter’s Passes for SSBU (instead of a new game with less content)! Let’s get the character count up to over 100! (And ignore previous rules about not making fighters out of characters that already appear in the game in a lesser form i.e. assist trophies, Mii costumes etc.)
… Wun can only hope.
Some Smash Bros Ultimate (non-fighter) Continued Support Wishes:
New Spirits are cool, but I think it's time they got a bit more wacky or creative with the Smash Tourney events. They should implement some Custom Smash elements into the tourney events like Mega size, Fast speed, Light/Heavy weight or Metal body etc. to mix things up and keep it fresh imo. Some of the spirit battle conditions make for more interesting, varied fights than just highlighting a specific item or set of characters.
Also, I don't mind the spirits, but the trophies from past Smash's were better. Granted they were full 3D models which I'm sure is a chore to render for each entry (especially with Ultimate having so many Spirits) so I understand the decision to just make them 2D artwork. However more importantly, I reference that to say I miss the background information they used to have though (some spirits & assist trophies I have no idea what they are or what games they are from)... it was like having a cool random digital video game encyclopedia. Wish they added that.
Also also, Random needs to be added as a character selection to Online Smash & tournaments (and the true selection shouldn't be revealed until the match starts and should continue to be different every match smh) I like mixing things up and variety when I play.
Also also also, another way they could continue to breathe life into Smash is with the of the World of Light, I loved that mode! I'm still hoping they'll release a new or even just reworked map either as free or paid Smash DLC as I'm pretty much out of single player content in the game to get through at this point- which I prefer tbh.
... Wun can only hope.
