I'm looking for a game along the lines of GTA or Just Cause, but for a child. Some violence is fine, like Just Cause levels of it. Open world that he can play by himself, as he has Fortnite and the like for online. He likes the idea of GTA, with just hopping in cars and driving around, and having walking around ans shooting freedom as well.
I'm not sure whats out there on Switch that would fit that market, as I think most are too childish for him. 1st or 3rd person. Any recommendations would be great!
Lego City Undercover is a great open world game with reduced violence. Lots to collect, vehicles to drive, things to build, criminals to catch, power-ups to unlock, etc. No shooting in it though. I suppose it may be perceived as "too childish". I'm not sure what other open world games with driving on Switch are suitable for a child.

@Cotillion Yeah, Lego City Undercover is basically the only gta style game that kid friendly, and it's a good one. And it goes on sale on eshop regularly, very deep discount for $6-8 USD. It goes on sale almost every month, as is evident in the game's price history on deku deals site. It appears canada gets the same frequent discounts, just like the US does. https://www.dekudeals.com/items/lego-city-undercover
I bought it cheap & downloaded the game game for when my nieces visit. I don't even like Lego games, but I skeptically tried it, and ended up playing it for like 35+ hours.
It’s only now that I’ve realised how almost all open world games I’ve played are a) on PlayStation, and b) are adult rated, or nearly adult rated. The PS one I can get because of how the Switch can barely run a proper open world game without massive drawbacks and comprises but why not make an open world game for kids?
One on the Switch is Assassin’s Creed, but the violence raises more questions than answers
Currently playing:
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
Persona 4 Golden
Dragon Quest XI S
F1 23
Xenoblade Chronicles 2
I'd probably go for Lego City Undercover as well. I grew up playing Lego games, but this one always made me cringe when it first came out. Without a star wars/indiana jones/superhero coat of paint? It's a harder sell.
However I got it on sale for the Switch and it's pretty good! Nothing groundbreaking, but the sort of mindless fun I'd class as "gaming comfort food".
Otherwise I'd recommend Skyrim or one of the open world Zelda games. Not in the GTA style but still brilliant (if not better). Probably not cool with the kids at school though - wasn't for me back then.
Nintendo systems are tough for that kind of thing. Everything else though? Tons of options, and reasonably cheap.
If the idea of driving is essential, then you could consider BURNOUT PARADISE REMASTERED. There is a lot of Racing, exploring and other kinds of driving Challenges.
@Cotillion You described exactly Lego City Undercover.
It's on sale for 5 bucks on the eshop just now, I just bought it, and it's very funny, perfect for a child.
For this price it absolutely worth it!
Thanks all, we've picked up Lego City Undercover, which happened to be on sale!
He'll be playing it this weekend, so hopefully it fills what he's looking for!
