I may have started my gaming life on NES, but the most memorable retro era for me was SNES. Had incredible games, was a golden era for JRPGs, and was the height of Nintendo in my mind.
I miss the snes/md/st/amiga/ms dos aka 16 bit era tbh you'd get lets say a WWF game and each system had its own art style,move or roster i wish the switch had a smackdown type WWE game then xbox could get a WWE raw type arcade sim whist sony do the 2k series(which logicly makes sense since the first two svr games were exclusive to ps2 yet svr 2007 was on 360 and ps2 but i think 2008 skipped 360?)
It's too bad that Analogue is no longer going to be selling the Super Nt, Mega Sg & Nt Mini anymore.
Ebay prices are crazy high. Both the Super Nt & Mega Sg are hitting nearly $1200 CAD each, while the Nt Mini is rougly two grand.
I'll be getting the AVS this month instead of the Nt Mini, possibly the Super Nt(Classic edition) at some point off eBay and pair it with an original Super GameBoy, but I'll most likely pass on the Mega Sg. I just feel a little indifferent about the Sega Genesis these days compared to how i did in the early to mid 90's.
It was no doubt the 'super' second fiddle when sided next to the SNES. The latter has aged extremely well, where as genesis typically offers shallower game play, dreary limited ugly colours, weaker visuals, backed up by some truly awful music & SFX by nearly every single NA developer. And i can't do the CRT thing anymore. Finding a 27" Sony WEGA(2005) CRT with 'low hours' off market place in my area is becoming very difficult these days.
I don't have the patience for that crap anymore. Those wega's definitely have the best consumer CRT picture quality, but they've aged and i can't stand the silver boxy huge bezel....Plus, I'm not as enthusiastic about using older hardware, controllers and Tube TV's anymore at this point in the game. It's just never the same, and it's getting a wee' bit stale at this point.
You cannot recapture that feeling or recreate those awesome gaming memories back in the 80's & 90's etc no matter how hard you try, so I figure, why not update and modernize the experience and make things more convenient and feel new-ish? The only real thing that i'll miss from CRT is it's incredible blur-free motion clarity, it's a game changer compared to modern QD-OLED displays. Plus they're flawless in terms of latency, OLED can get as low as 10ms at 60fps, and 5ms(which makes controls feel even more snappier and responsive) at 120fps-144fps.

It would be fun to give both set ups a proper test drive, and would no doubt be a lot less expensive going the CRT and original console route. But again, those Wega's are becoming a pain in the butt to find, and i don't want one of things, as a secondary TV, eating up my living room space. It just doesn't feel right in 2024. The 32" version was phenomenal back in the mid to late 2000's, when it was brand new and hot off the shelves, which also spanked those awful first wave LCD's and even plasma's, but those WEGA's are nearly 20 years old now, and will not look as good as they did fresh and new out of the box. Internal guts have aged and many of them have too many hours thrown into them. Time for a change I guess!
At least with OLED(when using AVS & Super Nt for ex), you'll be gaining perfect blacks/contrast, amazing brightness, progressive scan, brighter whites, they're light, slim, modern, new, and readily available. BUT, a WEGA CRT will have a big edge in motion clarity, and no latency. But I'm not too concerned with OLED motion blur, since the 42" is only going to be used for retro pixel art games. Once you get to the 3D stuff on OLED, and you have to turn the in-game camera from left to right, then chances are you're in trouble.
@NeonPizza Yeah as much as I would love to recreat that awesome 80s and 90s gaming feeling I agree. To pull off that feeling again it's just taking too much time and sometimes money and at least for me it's just not worth it considering how much time I game nowadays.
It is so hard nowadays to find a proper CRT TV and then hoping to hell that it will work properly and for how long? Heck even at my work the only time I see them is when one gets donated and then it's because it's not working. Even scouring Facebook or Craigslist it's becoming harder and harder to find one. It seems I am spending more time and energy looking for one then using it. That why I just went with the Super NT and Mega Sg. Yeah it's not exactly perfect but it's close enough. Especially when I feel like a quick game of Ken Griffey Jr's or something like DKC. I don't know about you but I have noticed in my neck of the woods SNES games have dropped alot in prices. I was able to score a copy of Sim City on SNES for 10 bucks from my local flea market a few months ago!!
But yeah as nice as it would be to have that authentic 80s/90s feel it's just not worth it for me.

I wish I had the space for a CRT. Or even that my parents had kept my old magnavox 13inch. College is one of the worst times to be a gamer because it’s so hard to protect tech. My mom was like “oh she isn’t using it” and would give stuff away or sell things that I had wanted to keep but didn’t have space in my dorm room for.
My LCD works fine as is but it is 15 years old and I worry what will I do when it dies.

Even if we recreated our living rooms from lets say the early 90's, with the exact same TV, the works, chances are you would still fail at recapturing that feeling for numerous reasons. Which is why i'm always hesitant about diving down that retro rabbit hole. Spending hundreds to thousands on memory trophies that will not live up to how you remember them, or get much play time isn't really worth it anymore. Nothing compares to playing these games during their original debut way back when, when it was your first time experiencing them. The people that you loved, your friends, just being a kid and living in the moment and experiencing all of the awesomeness that pop culture and life back then is unmatched. Vanilla Ice nailed it. the 90's truly was the last greatest or possibly the greatest overall decade of all time before computers ruined the world. lol Aka > Smart phones, Social Media and the Internet.
Anyways!, I think the trick is to just play older games that you've never played before or have never beaten which pretty much equals to a first time-ish/fresh experience. Off the top of my head, Gargoyles Quest 2(NES), Demon's Crest and Yoshi's Island are a few i need to give a proper go.
But ya, this is why I'd rather just get a second QD-OLED or QD-LED(in the 40-43" Range), with HD FPGA clone consoles like the AVS, Super Nt, Mega Sg & Duo, while using wireless 2.4g 8bitdo controllers and EverDrive flash Carts. The RetroTINK4K or even 5X Pro also have a wealth of options for better CRT softness interpolation and scan lines, plus a nifty HDR brightness boosting effect that solves the scanline darkening effect, since OLEDs on their own don't have enough of gobs of brightness to compensate for the loss in brightness.
This solves the issue entirely and gets close to delivering a CRT aesthetic/image picture-whatever, which you can't get exactly by using just the Super Nt or Mega Sg on their own. But ya, I am excited to get the Analogue Duo/Turbo GraFx simply because I've only played a bit of Bonk's Adventure on a Kiosk and seen Keith Courage in action at a local mall game store back in either the tail end of 89 or early 1990. That was the first and last time i ever played TGFX. But ya, TGFX & PC Engine games are way too expensive on eBay. I'm just going to get a Turbo EverDrive Pro and call it a day.
Ordering the AVS tomorrow too. Sucks that it doesn't have a proper CRT softness depth slider. I cannot stand playing 8-16 bit games with razor sharp raw sprites on HDTV's. But this is where the Retrotink4K or 5X Pro come into play, which gets the job done, as expensive as the former is. $1100 CAD later.
Yeesh. I haven't played the TGFX since 1990, the Sega Saturn since 1996, or the Dreamcast since 2001.
Might be neat to give them a whirl again, but they'll never live up to my memories when they were all cutting edge and new. Playing the Saturn launch Virtual Fighter port was pretty jaw dropping in 95, as was Panzer Dragoon, but catching a glimpse of either now even on a good CRT would probably kill my eye balls.
I'm planning on getting a 2002 era LCD Sharp Aquos. Since I'm using that in the case my JVC SDTV goes kaput on me. Plus, this kind of T.V. is quite compact so it won't be heavy or take up alot of room.
Should've kept my small Funai CRT T.V. when I had the chance.
